A Bayesian Framework for Recursive Object Removal in Movie Post-Production

A Bayesian Framework for Recursive Object Removal in Movie Post-Production
(2003)
KOKARAM, ANIL CHRISTOPHER
Abstract:
peer-reviewed
Some of the most convincing film and video effects are created in digital post-production by removing apparatus that supports or manipulates actors and objects. Wires and people, for instance, can be removed by digitally painting them out of the scene provided some 'clean plate' image is available for pasting in the missing regions. This paper addresses the problem when no such plate is available. Object removal requires the estimation of the motion of the hidden material and then the reconstruction of the missing image data. Using the notion of temporal motion smoothness, this paper articulates the two problems using a Bayesian framework and so develops a unique tool for automated object removal. The tool is currently being tested in the film effects industry and initial feedback is very positive.

Innovative Data Capture and Presentation Techniques in Support of the EU Environmental Noise Directive
(2009)
O'Riain, Gearoid; McCarthy, Tim
Abstract:
The Environmental Protection Agency of Ireland (EPA) funded from 2006 to 2007 a research project to develop methodologies to meet data-related challenges arising under the European Union (EU) Environmental Noise Directive (END) (2002/49/EC) for Ireland. The research project sought to assess the role of advanced ground-based spatial video and also aerial digital photography in the creation of data required for suitably accurate noise modelling in road environments.

New Technologies and Changing Work Practices in Irish Broadcasting Revisited
(2001)
Hazelkorn, Ellen
Abstract:
<p>At the end of the century, the challenges posed by ‘the pace of change affecting both the technology and the public policy of broadcasting’ required that RTE , the Irish broadcasting company, embraced a strategy of continuous change. To meet these challenges, the Executive Board instigated a ‘thorough review of the organisation…not merely anticipating the imminent arrival of keener domestic and international competition…[but] to project itself into the future’. Following an intensive six-month review, the RTE Authority and senior management issued a blueprint for the future, Review of Structures and Operations; at the same time, the trade union group within RTE, with management support, published their own review, Towards a Shared Vision. The Review identified ‘modern technologies, structures and accompanying work practices…[and operating] in a commercially enterprising manner in order to maximise its revenue’ as fundamental to any strategy for survival. In so doing, the ...

Developing a game based virtual learning environment
(2011)
Quigley, Enda
Abstract:
It‟s a common misconception that “digital natives” have a short attention span when in fact, they are just bored of the old methods of teaching and prefer to learn through fun, interactive games. These learners crave to be the active participant rather than the passive observer. Educators are slowly beginning to acknowledge the advantages of incorporating video games in the class to complement the old tell-test method of teaching. The online learning platform that I have developed will provide students with a number of educational games that cover a wide range of localisation awareness topics such as cultural appreciation, linguistic diversity, calendars, currency, and writing systems. Various motivational techniques such as in-game achievements and high score lists will be implemented to promote friendly competition amongst the students and to encourage them to continue playing the games. Our platform has also been developed as a general purpose virtual learning environment (VLE) i...
