Using segmented objects in ostensive video shot retrieval
(2006)
Sav, Sorin; Lee, Hyowon; Smeaton, Alan F.; O'Connor, Noel E.
Abstract:
This paper presents a system for video shot retrieval in which shots are retrieved based on matching video objects using a combination of colour, shape and texture. Rather than matching on individual objects, our system supports sets of query objects which in total reflect the user’s object-based information need. Our work also adapts to a shifting user information need by initiating the partitioning of a user’s search into two or more distinct search threads, which can be followed by the user in sequence. This is an automatic process which maps neatly to the ostensive model for information retrieval in that it allows a user to place a virtual checkpoint on their search, explore one thread or aspect of their information need and then return to that checkpoint to then explore an alternative thread. Our system is fully functional and operational and in this paper we illustrate several design decisions we have made in building it.

Abstract:
In this paper we present the system we have developed for our participation in the annual TRECVid benchmarking activity, specically the system we have developed, Físchlár-DT, for participation in the interactive search task of TRECVid 2005. Our back-end search engine uses a combination of a text search which operates over the automatic speech recognised text, and an image search which uses low-level image features matched against video keyframes. The two novel aspects of our work are the fact that we are evaluating collaborative, team-based search among groups of users working together, and that we are using a novel touch-sensitive tabletop interface and interaction device known as the DiamondTouch to support this collaborative search. The paper summarises the backend search systems as well as presenting the interface we have developed, in detail.

Supporting different search strategies in a video query interface
(2000)
Dunlop, Mark D.; McDonald, Kieran
Abstract:
This paper reports the design and development of the Diceman Query Application. This is the end-user query application for a video indexing and retrieval project based on the Diceman architecture for distributed internet content exchange using MPEG-7 and agent negotiation. The query application was developed to support different search strategies of users accessing large video archives that have been indexed with a complex indexing language. The paper describes the interface, its design, the strategies supported, and initial results from user tests of building complex queries using the query interface (including a discussion of end-users ability to formulate meaningful semantic queries using low-level indexing features). Finally the paper discusses the implications of the interface on the underlying search engine.

Associating low-level features with semantic concepts using video objects and relevance feedback
(2005)
Sav, Sorin; O'Connor, Noel E.; Smeaton, Alan F.; Murphy, Noel
Abstract:
The holy grail of multimedia indexing and retrieval is developing algorithms capable of imitating human abilities in distinguishing and recognising semantic concepts within the content, so that retrieval can be based on ”real world” concepts that come naturally to users. In this paper, we discuss an approach to using segmented video objects as the midlevel connection between low-level features and semantic concept description. In this paper, we consider a video object as a particular instance of a semantic concept and we model the semantic concept as an average representation of its instances. A system supporting object-based search through a test corpus is presented that allows matching presegmented objects based on automatically extracted lowlevel features. In the system, relevance feedback is employed to drive the learning of the semantic model during a regular search process.

Jihadi video and auto-radicalisation: evidence from an exploratory YouTube study
(2008)
Conway, Maura; McInerney, Lisa
Abstract:
Large amounts of jihadi video content on YouTube along with the vast array of relational data that can be gathered opens up innovative avenues for exploration of the support base for political violence. This exploratory study analyses the online supporters of jihad-promoting video content on YouTube, focusing on those posting and commenting upon martyr-promoting material from Iraq. Findings suggest that a majority are under 35 years of age and resident outside the region of the Middle East and North Africa (MENA) with the largest percentage of supporters located in the United States. Evidence to support the potential for online radicalisation is presented. Findings relating to newly formed virtual relationships involving a YouTube user with no apparent prior links to jihadists are discussed.

Using the discrete hadamard transform to detect moving objects in surveillance video
(2009)
Kim, Chanyul; O'Connor, Noel E.
Abstract:
In this paper we present an approach to object detection in surveillance video based on detecting moving edges using the Hadamard transform. The proposed method is characterized by robustness to illumination changes and ghosting effects and provides high speed detection, making it particularly suitable for surveillance applications. In addition to presenting an approach to moving edge detection using the Hadamard transform, we introduce two measures to track edge history, Pixel Bit Mask Difference (PBMD) and History Update Value (H UV ) that help reduce the false detections commonly experienced by approaches based on moving edges. Experimental results show that the proposed algorithm overcomes the traditional drawbacks of frame differencing and outperforms existing edge-based approaches in terms of both detection results and computational complexity.

Measuring the influence of concept detection on video retrieval
(2009)
Toharia, Pablo; Robles, Oscar D. ; Smeaton, Alan F.; Rodríguez, Ángel
Abstract:
There is an increasing emphasis on including semantic concept detection as part of video retrieval. This represents a modality for retrieval quite different from metadata-based and keyframe similarity-based approaches. One of the premises on which the success of this is based, is that good quality detection is available in order to guarantee retrieval quality. But how good does the feature detection actually need to be? Is it possible to achieve good retrieval quality, even with poor quality concept detection and if so then what is the 'tipping point' below which detection accuracy proves not to be beneficial? In this paper we explore this question using a collection of rushes video where we artificially vary the quality of detection of semantic features and we study the impact on the resulting retrieval. Our results show that the impact of improving or degrading performance of concept detectors is not directly reflected as retrieval performance and this raises inter...

Creating a web-scale video collection for research
(2009)
Over, Paul; Awad, George M.; Smeaton, Alan F.; Foley, Colum; Lanagan, James
Abstract:
This paper begins by considering a number of important design questions for a web-scale, widely available, multimedia test collection intended to support long-term scientific evaluation and comparison of content-based video analysis and exploitation systems. Such exploitation systems would include the kinds of functionality already explored within the annual TRECVid benchmarking activity such as search, semantic concept detection, and automatic summarisation. We then report on our progress in creating such a multimedia collection which we believe to be web scale and which will support a next generation of benchmarking activities for content-based video operations, and we report on our plans for how we intend to put this collection, the IACC.1 collection, to use.

Using Graphics Processor Units (GPUs) for automatic video structuring
(2007)
Kehoe, Peter; Smeaton, Alan F.
Abstract:
The rapid pace of development of Graphic Processor Units (GPUs) in recent years in terms of performance and programmability has attracted the attention of those seeking to leverage alternative architectures for better performance than that which commodity CPUs can provide. In this paper, the potential of the GPU in automatically structuring video is examined, specifically in shot boundary detection and representative keyframe selection techniques. We first introduce the programming model of the GPU and outline the implementation of techniques for shot boundary detection and representative keyframe selection on both the CPU and GPU, using histogram comparisons. We compare the approaches and present performance results for both the CPU and GPU. Overall these results demonstrate the significant potential for the GPU in this domain.

Abstract:
iBingo features two or more users performing collaborative information seeking tasks, using mobile devices, Apple iPod iTouch in our case. The novelty in our work is that the system, called iBingo, mediates the collaborative searches among the users and performs a realtime division of labour among co-searchers so users are presented with documents which are both unique and tailored to the individual. This enables each user to explore unique subsets of the retrieved information space. We demonstrate iBingo mobile collabo- rative search on a video collection from TRECVid 2007.

Abstract:
This paper explores our experiences in deploying a video application tool in film studies, and its evaluation in terms of realistic contextual end-users who have real tasks to perform in a real environment. We demonstrate our experiences and core lesson learnt in deploying our novel movie browser application with undergraduate and graduate students completing a Film Studies course in Dublin City University over a semester. We developed a system called MOVIEBROWSER2 that has two types of browsing modes: Advanced and Basic. In general, students found that the features we provided were beneficial for their studies. Some issues or mismatches arose during the trial. A ‘wish-list’ was drawn up that might be useful for the future system developer. The contribution and achievements reported in this article are on the demonstration and exploration of how advances in technology can be deployed, and media can be accessed in the context of a real user community. Exploring the usage indicates a ...

Abstract:
This article explains our work in designing an interface for a digital movie browsing system in the specific application context of film studies. The development of MOVIEBROWSER2 follows some general design guidelines based on an earlier user study with film studies students at Dublin City University. These design guidelines have been used as an input to the MOVIEBROWSER2 system design. The rationale for the interface design decisions has been elaborated. An experiment has been carried out among film studies student, together with a one-semester trial deployment. The results show positive feedback and a better performance in the students’ essay outcome with higher perceived satisfaction levels

Automatic TV advertisement detection from MPEG bitstream
(2002)
Sadlier, David A.; Marlow, Seán; O'Connor, Noel E.; Murphy, Noel
Abstract:
The Centre for Digital Video Processing at Dublin City University conducts concentrated research and development in the area of digital video management. The current stage of development is demonstrated on our Web-based digital video system called Físchlár (Proceedings of the Content based Multimedia Information Access, RIAO 2000, Vol. 2, Paris, France, 12–14 April 2000, p. 1390), which provides for efficient recording, analysing, browsing and viewing of digitally captured television programmes. Advertisement breaks during or between television programmes are typically recognised by a series of ‘black’ video frames simultaneously accompanying a depression in audio volume which separate each advertisement from one another by recurrently occurring before and after each individual advertisement. It is the regular prevalence of these flags that enables automatic differentiation between what is programme and what is a commercial break. This paper reports on the progress made in the deve...

Compression of digital hologram sequences using MPEG-4
(2009)
Darakis, Emmanouil; Naughton, Thomas J.
Abstract:
Recording and real time reconstruction of digital hologram sequences have recently become feasible. The amount of information that such hologram sequences contain results in voluminous data files, rendering their storage and transmission impractical. As a result, compression of digital hologram sequences is of utmost importance for practical applications of hologram sequences. In the absence of a specific hologram sequence compression technique, a first concern is how a high-performance conventional video compression technique would perform. Such a technique would not be optimized for hologram sequences but would provide a threshold that all hologram sequence compression techniques should reach. In this paper, the use of MPEG-4 part 2 video coding algorithm for the compression of hologram sequences is investigated. Although the algorithm was originally developed for the compression of ordinary video, we apply it on digital hologram sequences and investigate its performance. For this...

Abstract:
The imminent rapid expansion in the number of TV channels is driving the need for efficient digital video indexing, browsing and playback systems. For the past four years, the Centre for Digital Video Processing in DCU has been working towards the provision of such a system. The current stage of development is demonstrated on our Web-based digital video system called Físchlár [1,2], which is now in hourly use by over 1000 registered users. At present a user can pre-set the recording of TV broadcast programmes and can choose from a set of different browser interfaces which allow navigation through the recorded programmes. As our research has developed we have been adding increased functionality such as personalisation and programme recommendation, automatic recording, SMS/WAP/PDA alerting, searching, summarising and so on. There have been many approaches to automatic highlight detection and summarization of sports programmes [3-6]. However, most methods are oriented to particular spo...

Abstract:
Large volumes of information in video format are being created and made available from a number of application areas, including movies, broadcast TV, CCTV, education video materials, and so on. As this information is increasingly in digital format, this creates the opportunity and then the demand for content-based access to such material. One particular kind of video information that we are interested in is broadcast TV news and in this paper we report on our work on developing content-based access to broadcast TV news. Our work is carried out within the context of the Físchlár system, developed to allow content access to large volumes of digital video information. We report our work on Físchlár-News which provides text search based on closed caption information as well as our on-going work on segmenting TV News programmes and providing personalised intelligent access to TV news stories, on fixed as well as mobile platforms.

User evaluation of Físchlár-News: an automatic broadcast news delivery system
(2006)

Abstract:
Technological developments in content-based analysis of digital video information are undergoing much progress, with ideas for fully automatic systems now being proposed and demonstrated. Yet because we do not yet have robust operational video retrieval systems that can be deployed and used, the usual HCI practise of conducting a usage study and an informed iterative system design is thus not possible. Físchlár-News is one of the first automatic, content-based broadcast news analysis and archival systems that process broadcast news video so that users can search, browse, and play it in an easy-to-use manner with a conventional web browser. The system incorporates a number of state-of-the-art research components, some of which are not yet considered mature technology, yet it has been built to be robust enough to be deployed to users who are interested in access to daily news throughout a university campus. In this article we report and discuss a user-evaluation study conducted with 1...

Abstract:
In this paper we describe a framework and tool developed for running and evaluating automatic region based segmentation algorithms. The tool was designed to allow simple integration of existing and future segmentation algorithms, both single image based algorithms and those that operate on video data. Our framework supports plug-in segmenters, media decoders, and region-map codecs. We provide several sophisticated implementations of these plug-ins, including a video decoder capable of frame accurate decoding of a large variety of video formats, an image decoder which also handles a comprehensive collection of formats, and a efficient implementation of a region-map codec. The tool includes both a graphical user interface to allow users to browse, visually inspect, and evaluate the algorithm output, and a batch processing interface for segmentation of large data collections. The application allows researchers to focus more on the development and evaluation of segmentation methods, rel...

Abstract:
The TREC Video Retrieval Evaluation (TRECVID) 2008 is a TREC-style video analysis and retrieval evaluation, the goal of which remains to promote progress in content-based exploitation of digital video via open, metrics-based evaluation. Over the last 7 years this effort has yielded a better understanding of how systems can effectively accomplish such processing and how one can reliably benchmark their performance. In 2008, 77 teams (see Table 1) from various research organizations --- 24 from Asia, 39 from Europe, 13 from North America, and 1 from Australia --- participated in one or more of five tasks: high-level feature extraction, search (fully automatic, manually assisted, or interactive), pre-production video (rushes) summarization, copy detection, or surveillance event detection. The copy detection and surveillance event detection tasks are being run for the first time in TRECVID. This paper presents an overview of TRECVid in 2008.

Abstract:
This paper describes the organisational and playback features of Físchlár, a digital video library that allows users to record, browse and watch television programmes online. Programmes that can be watched and recorded are organised by personal recommendations, genre classifications, name and other attributes for access by general television users. Motivations and interactions of users with online television libraries are outlined and they are also supported by personalised library access, categorised programmes, a combined player browser with content viewing history and content marks. The combined player browser supports a user who watches a programme on different occasions in a non-sequential order.

Educational influences in learning with visual narratives

Abstract:
In this presentation, we intend to show, through the use of digital video, our understanding of ontological values of a web of betweenness and pedagogy of the unique (Farren, 2004) as they are lived in practice with students, in this case, practitioner-researchers on award bearing programmes. We both work with a sense of research-based professionalism in which we are seeking to improve our educational practice with our students in action research enquiries 'how do I improve what I am doing?' The visual narratives, in the form of digital video clips, of our educational practice, include our engagement with practitioner-researchers as we seek to understand our educational influences in their learning so that we can "influence the education of social formation" (Whitehead, 2004a & b). This relates to the idea of social formations as defined by Bourdieu (1990) and points to the way people organise their interactions according to a set of regulatory values that ca...

Abstract:
Science Unleashed (SU) is a pilot project aimed at Junior Cycle students in second level schools in Ireland. It is part of the IMMERSE initiative (Innovative Multi-Media Educational Resources for Students and Educators) which aims to produce a range of digital learning and teaching materials for use in primary schools (Visual Arts and Sci-Spy) and post primary schools (Science Unleashed). In this pilot project of SU material, 15 video clips had been prepared and were trialed in two stages in 6 second level schools, 5 of which were in the Dublin region. The key evaluation was to examine the impact of the use of these video clips within the classroom both on the teachers’ methodology and also on students learning. A website accompanied the DVDs and provided additional support material. The National Centre for Technology in Education (NCTE) selected three schools in February 2004, which were evaluated in May 2004. A further 4 schools were trialed in October 2004, with their evaluation ...
