The Return of the Broad University Curriculum

The Return of the Broad University Curriculum
(2007)
Heffron, Rachel
Abstract:
How should the modern university resolve the conflict of whether to meet the demands of the economy or student preferences? Circumstances of economic prosperity, coupled with individual liberty as well as social justice to a degree encouraged by the Renaissance ideal of educating a man to be a 'man of the universe' (uoma universale), a man who studied languages, poetry, history, philosophy as well as the sciences. Because commercialism has taken root in higher education today, universities are said to have lost their way (Bok, 2003). There is comparatively little research into what possible new paths a university can adopt and yet still deliver on all its aims. This raises the question: is there a need for modern universities to produce more broadly educated students? Several universities have adopted a broad education curriculum. The objective of this research is to examine three target universities with regard to broad education: Trinity College Dublin, University of St ...

(2007)
ní Ghormáin, Caoimhe
Abstract:
Born in Bandon, Co. Cork in 1927, Risteárd Ó Glaisne was educated at Bandon Grammar School and Trinity College, Dublin. He is best known in Irish-speaking circles for his books on such diverse subjects as Dr Ian Paisley, Dr Conor Cruise O'Brien, Cardinal Thomás O Fiaich and Irish Methodism. One of his most remarkable achievments as founder-editor was the successful launch in 1958 of Focus, an inter-denominational Protestant review. Amongst his papers are letters from writers such as Máirtín Ó Chadhain, Ciarán Ó Nualláin, Seán Ó Ríordáin, Gabriel Rosenstock and Nuala Ní Dhomhnaill; material relating to Ó Glaisne's works, published and unpublished; and material concerning organisations with whom Ó Glaisne was involved between the early 1940s and 2003, such as Moral Re-Armament, the Anti-Apartheid movement and Amnesty.

Travel behaviour and transportation needs of the disabled: case study of some categories of disability in Dublin, Ireland
(2005)
O'MAHONY, MARGARET MARY
Abstract:
peer-reviewed
The arguments in defence of poor attention to those with disabilities in terms of offering equal opportunities to transportation options tend to centre on the high cost of provision or improvement in facilities. The paper examines the current quality of service on a variety of modes and mode ancillaries such as stations and stops as determined by individuals with disabilities. This is followed by an examination of the measures required by the disabled to improve the quality of service. The evaluations are done with 4 types of disability groups and although the samples of individuals involved are small, the findings are incisive and clear. The improvement measures discussed fall into two categories; those that are costly and those that are more to do with a little more consideration being given on the part of the transportation operator when locating, for example, timetables at a lower level at bus stops to facilitate wheel chair users or announcing stops as buses a...

Statement of the views of employers in the Irish Free State on the system of national health insurance
(1928)
Eason, J. C. M.
Abstract:
There are no ready sources of information to which one can turn for collective or individual statements as to the views of employers, and the only body representative of the business community which gave evidence before the Health Commission was the Dublin Chamber of Commerce. That is why, for the purpose of this discussion tonight, I rely mainly upon the opinions then expressed, supplementing them in certain directions and bringing them up to date.

Abstract:
For the CLEF 2004 ImageCLEF St Andrew's Collection task the Dublin City University group carried out three sets of experiments: standard cross-language information retrieval (CLIR) runs using topic translation via machine translation (MT), combination of this run with image matching results from the VIPER system, and a novel document rescoring approach based on automatic MT evaluation metrics. Our standard MT-based CLIR works well on this task. Encouragingly combination with image matching lists is also observed to produce small positive changes in the retrieval output. However, rescoring using the MT evaluation metrics in their current form significantly reduced retrieval effectiveness.

Risky Business: An Examination of Probation Officers' Attitudes towards Risk Assessment
(2008)
Richardson, Michelle
Abstract:
Over the past ten years, the concept of risk has moved to centre stage in criminological spheres. Risk assessment and the concern for effective management of offenders while safe guarding public safety has become a core issue for criminal justice agencies. This research focuses on risk assessment and probation practice in Ireland. In particular, the attitudes of practicing basic grade probation officers' working on adult community teams in Dublin are examined to gain insight into the complexities experienced by probation officers. Specifically, the research aims to highlight the consequences of adopting standardised risk tools on probation practice. The research discusses current theoretical arguments on the influence of risk in criminal justice and outlines the impact of risk discourse on probation practice in Ireland and elsewhere. Using a mix of qualitative and quantitative methods of data collection, probation officers' attitudes are examined and presented thematically...

Adaptation to college and individuation-attachment : a review of first year students in contemporary Ireland
(2008)
Simmons, Sarah
Abstract:
The substantive aim of this study was to examine the adaptation of young-adult‟s to college life in Ireland today. The study also assessed the participant‟s levels of individuation-attachment and its consequences for college adjustment. A number of personal variables were examined in relation to both the participants‟ college adjustment and individuation-attachment, with gender being of significant interest. Data were collected from a sample of 125 (78 females and 47 males) first-year college students attending a number of Dublin based institutions. Participants‟ completed quantitative measures of college adjustment and individuation-attachment. Findings indicated that overall student adjustment was positive, with levels of individuation-attachment having little effect on college adjustment. There was no significant relationship between the predictor variables and college adjustment. Nevertheless, females reported significantly lower levels of „Fear of Attachment‟ than their male co...

The Mellon Retrospective Cataloguing Project in Trinity College Library Dublin
(2010)
MAWE, SHANE
Abstract:
This article describes the Mellon Retrospective Cataloguing Project in Trinity College Library Dublin. It gives a description of the Printed Catalogue (holdings up to 1872) and the Accessions Catalogue (1873-1963) and provides an insight into the work of the project over its four year lifetime (2005-2009). The methodology used to co-ordinate the project is outlined as is the sourcing of electronic records for titles contained in both catalogues. It also shows how advances in a dynamic library environment can affect a project during the various stages of its lifecycle. It suggests options for future conversion projects as well as offering advice to institutions undertaking a comparable task.

Dublin City University at CLEF 2004: experiments in monolingual, bilingual and multilingual retrieval
(2005)
Jones, Gareth J.F.; Burke, Michael; Judge, John; Khasin, Anna; Lam-Adesina, Adenike M.; Wagner, Joachim
Abstract:
The Dublin City University group participated in the monolingual, bilingual and multilingual retrieval tasks this year. The main focus of our investigation this year was extending our retrieval system to document languages other than English, and completing the multilingual task comprising four languages: English, French, Russian and Finnish. Results from our French monolingual experiments indicate that working in French is more effective for retrieval than adopting document and topic translation to English. However, comparison of our multilingual retrieval results using different topic and document translation reveals that this result does not extend to retrieved list merging for the multilingual task in a simple predictable way.

Why are Students Leaving and What can we do to Stop Them?
(2005)
Conway, Ann
Abstract:
Not only are demographic changes taking place within the Irish population but in addition, significant challenges are being imposed on higher education providers to retain as many students as possible within the higher education system. Yorke (1999) noted that many students leave higher education prematurely and about 50% of these students do so during, or at the end of their first year in college (DIT, 2003). Some non-completion of courses is unavoidable and should not be viewed as failure by the student, tutor or college, but acknowledged that dropping out is likely (Oliver, 2001). However, a lot of non-completion is preventable and it is the responsibility of the college to help retain their students (Yorke, 1999). Retention rates in Universities, DIT and other institutes have been the subject of a number of recent studies (Flanagan et al, 2000; Morgan et al, 2001; Finnegan and Russell, 2000; Morgan and Kelleghan, 2002), and numerous studies by Costello et al. Abstract:
The DIT-ACHIEV Model for the Sustainable Management of Tourism has been developed by the School of Hospitality Management and Tourism, Dublin Institute of Technology and is endorsed by the Environmental Protection Agency and Fáilte Ireland. It explores six areas of interest - Administration, Community, Heritage, Infrastructure, Enterprise and Visitor. The purpose of piloting this DIT- ACHIEV model in Killarney is to test its use in an Irish tourism destination, with the objective to refine and adjust its methodology, so that it can be applied in any Irish tourism destination. Early indications are that the Model will provide the Irish Tourism Industry with a valuable tool for making its product and management far more sustainable. In addition to data such as environmental measurements, information on water, waste, energy, transport, examination of local cultural, landscape and employment statistics, the model requires the undertaking of three dedicated surveys: • A Resident Survey •...

Abstract:

Duffy, Deirdre (2010) 'The Negotiation and Consumption of Mediated Masculinities in the Artistry of the Male Self' in Magennis, C. and Mullen, R. (eds.) Irish Masculinities: Critical Reflections on Literature and Culture. Dublin: Irish Academic Press, Forthcoming 2011

Much research has been conducted to date considering the construction of identity in many disciplines. However this essay explores Irish men’s construction of their identity in tandem with their lived existence in the social world. The interrelations and influences of their family, friends, peers and the media, ultimately human interdependency itself, all serve as potential cues upon which young men borrow to craft their own masculine identity.
