The Greater Dublin Area: Ireland's Potential City-State of the Early 21st. Century
(2010)
Hughes, Brian
Abstract:
Dublin’s superior population and employment growth, its scale size and unique urban agglomerative momentum will result in it emerging as Ireland’s ‘city state’ by mid-tolate 21st century. The hypothesis states that by then, the GDA is expected to be approaching half of the State’s population. The pivotal research question addressed is: can the GDA long-term differential population growth to that of the RoS area result in a 50% convergence of their respective populations and if so, when might this occur? The thesis develops the Hughes Years Matrix of Convergence ‘HYMOC’1 mathematical model, which represents this author’s spreadsheet matrix time indicator in years, to such convergence. This includes varying population parameters of differential exponential compound annual growth rates, from scenarios of demographic-specific start-points: ones which can accommodate select assumptions as to the GDA and RoS population sizes. From published CSO 2006 census data on town size, specifically ...

Care-Givers, Leisure and the Meaning of Home: a Case study of Low Income Women in Dublin
(2010)
Quinn, Bernadette
Abstract:
This article seeks to contribute to the literature on the meanings of domestic spaces by furthering understandings of the sorts of roles that space plays in shaping women’s leisure experiences. The study researched a group of 15 women who live in disadvantaged areas of Dublin city and care for dependent children. Focus groups and structured conversations revealed the poverty of the spatial capital available to these women, depicting local environments as difficult and stressful, and to be endured rather than enjoyed. They further revealed the extent to which the women’s lives were shaped by their obligations as care-givers. Within the home itself, private domestic spaces were found to be deeply embedded with powerful ideologies of motherhood that did not necessarily evaporate in the simple absence of obligations imposed by children. Instead, they tended to serve as constant reminders of how things ‘should be’, consequently constraining some women’s abilities to divest themselves of ...

City Break Motivation:the Case of Dublin a Successful National Capital
(2007)
Dunne, Gerard; Flanagan, Sheila; Buckley, Joan
Abstract:
This paper investigates why people take city break trips. The main objective of the study was to reveal the underlying push and pull motivational factors associated with taking a city break holiday to Dublin. In-depth interviews with 40 city break visitors uncovered six push factors and eight pull factors. The main push motives involved were, ‘escape,’ ‘socialising,’ and ‘self esteem (gift giving).’ City breaks were generally viewed as active or ‘doing’ holidays, with the ‘relaxation’ motive hardly featuring at all as a reason to visit. Pull factors were found to be particularly important in terms of the travel decision. Factors such as, ease of access and, the availability of cheap flights, were not only influential in determining the destination, but also acted, in some cases, as the main stimuli to take the trip.

Retailing at the Periphery: An Analysis of Dublin’s Tertiary City-Centre Shopping Streets (1972-2002)
(2003)
O'Callaghan, Edmund; O'Riordan, Don
Abstract:
This research examined changes in Dublin’s tertiary city centre shopping streets over a thirty year period to 2002. An observational study of the occupancy of the city’s tertiary streetscape was undertaken in the summer of 2002 and compared with historical data. Results indicate significant change over the period examined: an increased vacancy rate, a very low survival rate, a considerable incidence of non retail specific activities, a decline in traditional retail offerings and the emergence of new categories of retailer. The paper concludes by suggesting a proactive approach is required by present day retailers in the tertiary streets to ensure future survival.

Streets of Stability and Change: a Comparative Analysis of Dublin City-centre Streetscapes (1972-2002)
(2005)
O'Callaghan, Edmund; O'Riordan, Don
Abstract:
Studies on city streetscapes are relatively rare in the retail literature despite the fact that retail offerings at any point in time approximate the volume and nature of societal consumption. This study examines past and present composition of streetscape activity and street ownership in Dublin city centre. The data generated will constitute a historical record of both the degree of stability and the degree of change in the Dublin streetscape. Findings illustrate the volatility of the street and the importance for central places of fulfilling both social and economic roles. The study also identifies the need for more innovative and carefully targeted interventions to regenerate specific tertiary street s. Finally, the study concludes that an analysis of change in retail provision over time provides a relatively accurate barometer of socio-cultural change.

Safety Performance on 20 Construction Sites in Dublin
(2004)
McEvoy, Paul
Abstract:
Abstract The aim of this research was to assess factors affecting safety performance on twenty apartment construction sites in Dublin using qualitative and quantitative risk assessment techniques. The quantitative techniques involved observing compliance with recommended safety procedures. The qualitative techniques involved an assessment of site safety management documentation and semi structured interviews with site management regarding site safety procedures. The field work was carried out between November 2003 and October 2004. The results showed that five sites out of twenty had high standards of safety and prevented all possible falls from heights. The five best performing sites were characterised by size of company in that that the largest construction companies were found to be the best performing. What was also found was that when a site performed well in terms of safety, it performed well across all safety categories. Evidence showing that the presence on site of a safety ...

The Future Direction of Institutes of Higher Education in Ireland and Their Pathway of Transformation: A Case Study of the Dublin Institute of Technology's "Operation Transformation" as a Leading Example of an Institute of the Future
(2011)
Conway, Ann
Abstract:
This paper is an outline proposal for an EdD thesis with the University of Sheffield which has been accepted. The principle aim of this research is to investigate what might an institute of education be in the future through viewing the current changes afoot in the Dublin Institute of Technology (DIT) and the underlying reasons for these changes to take place. It is not proposed that DIT is the ideal example but it is one example of Irish higher education (HE) in transition to be more students focused and flexible for future demands. The HE system in Ireland is broad in scope and encompasses the university sector, the technological sector, the colleges of education and private, independent colleges. Ireland is a society undergoing major change economically, but also demographically through recent migration and mobility of workers from all over Europe and beyond. In an economy as open as Ireland’s it is vital that higher education operate to a maximum effectiveness responding to chan...

Royal Pomp: Viceregal Celebrations and Hospitaity in Georgian Dublin
(2011)
Mac Con Iomaire, Máirtín; Kellaghan, Tara
Abstract:
During the successive reigns of the Hanoverian kings in England (1714-1830), a total of thirty-seven different viceroys were sent to Ireland as representatives of the British Crown (Table 1). The position of viceroy (also referred to as lord-lieutenant) was awarded as a matter of political exigency, but the viceroy’s role was one of social as much as political significance. The viceroy and his vicereine played the roles of the British monarchs in absentia, and the Protestant minority ruling class, often referred to as the Ascendancy, expected the viceregal court at Dublin Castle to not merely mirror, but to outshine that of St. James’s Palace in London. The standards of hospitality set by the Irish themselves ensured that no incoming lord lieutenant would long be in doubt as to what was expected of him as the chief host of the Irish nation, and, perhaps even more importantly, as the leader of Dublin society.

Calculating population density for MOLAND in the Dublin urban area
(2010)
Foley, Ronan; Critchley, Martin; Convery, Sheila
Abstract:
The EPA-funded Urban Environment Project seeks to apply MOLAND, a cellular automata based model, to predict a range of urban impacts in the Greater Dublin Region from 2006 onwards. One quantitative requirement, at least in the input stages of model building, is to establish average population densities for the different residential land use classes because the population must be allocated to cells in these classes. It has a separate output function when actually used within the MOLAND model, relating to the estimation of numbers of people affected by a particular scenario generated by the model. This working paper explores a series of approaches taken to identify population densities for a number of urban land-use categories. The results are documented against a number of differing spatial approaches to test for precision and applicability. Some suggestions are proposed as to the most effective method to use in developing the model.

Does MOLAND work as a tool for the assessment and/or as a predictor of the distribution of urban biodiversity in Dublin city?
(2010)
Brennan, Michael; Twumasi, Bright Osei
Abstract:
The MOLAND project's aim is to provide spatial planning tools that can be used to assess, monitor and model the development of urban and regional environments. To date it has been applied to an area of over 70,000km2 across Europe. MOLAND's use as a tool for the assessment and forecasting of biodiversity is examined with Dublin city as a case study. It was found that, in its current form, the MOLAND model's use as a biodiversity assessment tool was limited. Several recommendations are made for improvements to its capability in this area.

Sizing of a CHP plant: a case study for Dublin City University
(2004)
Abd-Elkarim, Tarik
Abstract:
Dublin City University (DCU) occupies an 85 acre campus that includes the main academic and administrative buildings as well as residence accommodation. The university has a low-pressure hot water (LPHW) heating system fed from a central boiler house and electrical power provided by the ESB. DCU’s electrical and thermal power consumption has sharply increased in the last few years due to rapid expansion, which has lead the university to focus on the high cost of its heating and power bills. An overview of the current technology of the field of combined heat and power is given in this thesis. A review of recent energy bills for the campus and an analysis of trends in heat and power for the past three years is presented. A detailed examination of the energy requirements of the DCU campus, with particular references to the possible role of combined heat and power in supplying these requirements efficiently and cheaply is given. Suggestions are also made for the size of plant suitable f...

Opting In and Staying In: Older Teenagers’ Decisions on Becoming and Remaining Involved in Youth Services in Dublin City.
(2010)
Martin, Kerri
Abstract:
It is widely recognised in Ireland and internationally that the engagement of young people in the youth work process brings with it a range of positive benefits and outcomes, both for the young people involved and society in general. However, it has also been found that young people aged 15-19 participate less in youth services and therefore do not gain the associated benefits. This dissertation explores the perspectives of young people aged 15-19 who are engaged in youth services in Dublin City, in relation to their decisions to become and remain involved in youth services. The aim of this research was to point to ways of attracting and sustaining the engagement of more young people within this age group. A case study design was employed, using multiple data collection strategies in two youth work sites in Dublin City. The findings suggest that in order to attract and maintain the engagement of young people aged 15-19, youth services, together with young people, must endeavour to a...

Driver Behaviour Near Schools in South County Dublin
(2011)
King, Bernadette
Abstract:
This study assessed the driver behaviour of 1,200 drivers near three schools in South County Dublin. This literature review focuses on articles discussing factors believed to influence drivers speed choice and the perception of drivers towards speed limits and explore how the theory of planned behaviour or reasoned action has been used to improve prediction and explanation of driver behaviour. The primary goal of this study was to assess driver behaviour near three schools and establish if they are complying with the posted speed limit. It also set out to seek to establish what factors if any were associated with driver behaviour and establish if there was a correlation between demographics and compliance with the speed limit. The main finding of this research was that one in five drivers are speeding near schools with almost 20% of the drivers breaking the speed limit by up to 10 km/h. i.e. 60 km/h. This study found that a relationship existed between age of drivers and non complia...

Report on shopper travel behaviour in Dublin City Centre

Abstract:
Traders on Dublin’s two main shopping streets considerably over-estimate spending by shoppers travelling by car and Luas while significantly undervaluing the spend of bus passengers and pedestrians.
