Vigilantes, anti-drug movements, and community empowerment : a Dublin case study
(2006)
Nugent, Erin S.
Abstract:
THESIS 8543
The Dublin anti-drug movement was a response to the escalation of the overt heroin problem in inner-city areas. In the early 1980?s, Concerned Parents Against Drugs (CPAD) became a citywide network whose intention was to empower local communities to tackle the problem themselves. The movement?s ideals surfaced again in the mid-1990?s when the Coalition of Communities Against Drugs (COCAD) formed to address the second wave of the heroin epidemic in disadvantaged areas. However, one article by Bennett (1988) on the surveillance techniques of CPAD remains the only published research on the movement. Short references to CPAD also exist in various books which examine community, crime, or drug-related issues. These mention the anti-drug movement as a ?social? movement which exercised social control in inner-city areas. CPAD was also frequently presented as a ?vigilante? movement in the media during the 1980?s, as was COCAD a decade later. Furthermore, the existing literatu...

Uneven development and the third space in the urban system : evidence from Dublin
(2001)
Punch, Michael, 1971-
Abstract:
THESIS 6122
The objective of this study is to contribute to the understanding of urban social change through theoretical-empirical exploration of the third space in the city. To achieve this, the research examines some aspects of the relations between broad processes of change, some of which have operated at a global scale, and grassroots mobilisation. The basic point of departure for the study is the manifest inequality across the city and the emergence of various forms of local organisation to respond to some of the related difficulties. In order to deal with these issues, case studies are developed in working- class communities in the inner city and new town of Tallaght in Dublin.

Historical geographies of Dublin's public green spaces, from their origins to 1756
(2005)
Strati, Irene
Abstract:
THESIS 7741
The remit of this work is to provide a model of analysis for the evolution of public green spaces in an urban environment, through space and time. The geographical region examined in this thesis is Dublin, and the time period chosen is from the origins of the city - conventionally considered to be 841- to the year 1756 with the publication of John Rocque's map of the city of Dublin. The aim of the research is to identify phases of change in the forms, functions and meanings of public green spaces, and to evaluate these in consideration of the course of relevant historical events.

Keeping Mum' : a qualitative study of women drug users' experience of preserving motherhood in Dublin
(2008)
Woods, Marguerite
Abstract:
THESIS 8447
According to academic accounts, it is not uncommon for women who use illicit drugs to be culturally portrayed in negative stereotypical terms as ?unfeminine?, 'unclean' and 'immoral'. Nowhere is this more evident than when a woman is both a drug user and a mother, when the stereotype is expanded to describe a person who invariably gives priority to her drug use rather than to her children. Where many studies purport to present objective clinical data which demonstrate that maternal drug use is incompatible with good parenting, the present study - while taking account of professional views on this topic - privileges the lived motherhood experience of women drug users who struggle to combine parenting with drug use. This study is about women, drug use and motherhood in Dublin.

Neighbourhood regeneration in the neoliberal era : Dublin and Paris, a comparative perspective
(2010)
Attuyer, Katia
Abstract:
THESIS 9378
This thesis is centrally concerned with changes in state policies. The research aims to trace the evolution of urban regeneration policies in two different geographical contexts, paying attention to both temporal and geographical variations in governmental approaches to regeneration. The study aims to review the manner in which the growing intensification of the neoliberal agenda has differently affected the process of urban regeneration in Paris and Dublin. The aim is to account for variations in the global neoliberal project. This research seeks to make a contribution to the development of urban studies by offering empirical evidence of path-dependency in the evolution of regeneration policies. The study also strives to identify how different socio-political ideological contexts have shaped the ability of indigenous communities to change the outcomes of regeneration. The overall objective is to discuss how powerful socially disadvantaged communities are in influenc...

Incorporating dissent in the renewal of Dublin's inner city : engagements between the local state and inner-city communities in Dublin's Liberties
(2011)
Brudell, Paula
Abstract:
THESIS 9756
This research addresses a crucial silence in the Irish neoliberal discourse, the voices and struggles of working-class communities resident in those areas in which the state pursued its neoliberal urban-development agenda throughout a decade of intensive development in Dublin?s inner city. The research was prompted by the discrepancy between the official consensus surrounding the Irish state?s urban-renewal agenda and the more critical assessments emanating from communities in the targeted areas. The extent to which those experiences and critiques were obscured from public view raised questions about the manner in which the Irish state managed to proceed almost with impunity while pursuing a highly political urban-development policy resulting in far-reaching negative consequences for working-class residents. The research explores the manner in which such apparent harmony and political quiescence is to be comprehended, notably addressing the degree to which the Irish ...

An analysis of urban public space in three European cities : London, Dublin and Amsterdam
(2009)
Lawton, Thaddeus Philip
Abstract:
THESIS 9410
This thesis sets out to enquire into the relationship between recent urban transformation and urban public space in three European cities: London, Dublin and Amsterdam. This involves an analysis of the manner in which public space is produced in an official capacity and the way in which it is interpreted and used in everyday life. A central objective of the thesis is to examine the degree to which official ideals related to public space have been transferred between different urban contexts, and its consequences. Moreover, it also examines the importance of social context in terms of understanding urban public space.

The hospital of St John the Baptist, Dublin c. 1188-1539 : a historical and prosopographical analysis
(2012)
O'Keeffe, Grace
Abstract:
THESIS 9736
The hospital of St John the Baptist was founded c. 1188 by Ailred Palmer and his wife. The hospital was located in the western suburb of medieval Dublin, an area which had seen much expansion and development following the settlement of the city by the English, beginning in 1170. The hospital was of the order of the Fratres Cruciferi, canons regular who followed the rule of St Augustine. It was the first known foundation of this kind in Ireland, though the origins and spread of this order throughout Europe are somewhat obscure. In many ways it was a foundation of its time, a hospital for the sick and poor, located outside the city walls and run by the Augustinians. As much as its experiences in its early years mirrored those of other similar institutions, so too did its demise. It was closed in 1539 as part of the sweeping changes brought about by Henry VIII?s policy of dissolution.

Dublin Quakers in business 1800-1850
(1988)
Harrison, Richard S.
Abstract:
THESIS 1469.1
THESIS 1469.2
The quakers, otherwise known as members of the Religious' Society of Friends are popularly renowned for the part they have played in the establishment of numerous business and philanthropic schemes in whatever parts they have settled. Where any systematic scientific study has been undertaken into Irish Quaker business history the analysis has frequently been biased by assumptions adopted uncritically from an English historical background. The Dublin Quaker community provides an area very amenable to an extended economic and social analysis. The survival of an internally consistent corpus of documentary and archival material recording the chief preoccupations of their Society over a period starting circa 1655 until the present day makes a useful resource for identifying connections between their doctrine and their business practice. Group patterns of multi-levelled and mutual disciplinary and administrative review led to a regularised pattern ...

Around the Table : a Project about Food in Dublin
(2017)
Dublin’s Culture Connects
Abstract:
A project about food, with Dublin City Council and The National Library, prompted by a bid for European City of Culture 2020, which takes in the area of the city from the mouth of the River Liffey up to Stoneybatter on the Northside, and involves retired Dockworkers, a homework club on Greek Street, a group of women who grew up near the markets, and several other communities we don’t know exist yet but will want to know more about — to be concluded inside three months?” Oh yes. In our role of boisterous intruders in these selfcontained, well-hidden worlds, we will hear remarkable stories: a mislaid elephant in Dublin Port; a small child lowering elevenses into the bowels of a ship to his Father, waist-deep in coal; an unexpected grá of cabbage water among innercity 12-year-olds; thirty-six Flake bars wrapped per minute on the Cadbury production line; three thousand people queuing for food parcels on Christmas week just gone. These things charm, amuse, appal us. There are swarms of f...

Particulate air pollution and mortality in Dublin 1980-1996
(2000)
Goodman, Patrick Gerard
Abstract:
THESIS 5310
Air pollution in Dublin was studied for the period from 1980 to 1996. The factors which contribute to air pollution were investigated, and the nature of particulate air pollution is discussed. The trends in air pollution, and the Government interventions in relation to fuel usage, and air quality were evaluated. All non-accidental mortality for residents of Dublin County Borough was studied for the same period. The study covers 16.75 years, or 6119 days. A total of 80,307 deaths used in the study. Giving an average of 13.2 deaths per day.

Dublin reformed : the transformation of the municipal governance of a Victorian city, 1840-1860
(2002)

Abstract:
THESIS 6831.1
THESIS 6831.2
This thesis investigates the reform of Dublin Corporation and its activities from 1840 until the early 1860s. Nineteenth-century Dublin in particular has been overlooked in Irish historiography and, consequently, in general urban histories. The two main works on Dublin are Hill?s Patriots to Unionists (1997) and Daly?s Dublin: The Deposed Capital (1985). Hill covers Dublin city politics from the seventeenth-century until 1840, during which time Protestant freemen in effect controlled the city, while Daly explores Dublin from 1860 until the early twentieth-century, a period throughout which a large portion of Protestants had settled in the suburbs and Catholic nationalists dominated the city council. Dublin in the period between 1840 and 1860 has never been fully researched.

THESIS 1244.2
THESIS 1244.3
The Carboniferous (Courceyan to Arnsbergian) sedimentary rocks of the Dublin area, between the Balbriggan and Leinster Massifs, are described and discussed. The region north of Swords was re-mapped at a scale of 1:10,560 while the region to the south was studied at a reconnaissance level. Outcrop and borehole material was utilised across the whole area. A revised lithostratigraphy is presented. The geographical extent of the revised formations is shown in detail on two 1:25,0OO solid geological maps and one 1:126,720 geological sketch map. The disposition of Carboniferous strata on the coastal section north of Rush is shown in detail on maps and cross-sections at a scale of 1:2,500. Sedimentological and petrographical studies were undertaken to investigate the geological development of the Dublin Basin. A wide range of basinal facies, ranging from coarse debris flow fans to non-point sourced turbidity current and storm underflow ...

Young people, drugs and risk : an ethnography of drug use in a Dublin inner-city community
(2004)
Mayock, Paula
Abstract:
THESIS 7352
This ethnographic study of drug use is based in a socially disadvantaged Dublin locality with a lengthy history of concentrated drug problems. The study set out to investigate drug use and non-use among young people living in this 'high risk' social environment and to trace their drug 'journeys' as they move towards young adulthood. The study's longitudinal design incorporated two separate phases of fieldwork - the first conducted in 1998 and the second in 2001 - and involved active participation in the social milieu of young people, whether in youth clubs, on the street or, occasionally, in their own homes. At the core of the research was the question of how young people from one marginal 'zone' of Dublin's inner-city navigate the social landscapes available to them and form different kinds and levels of commitment to illicit drug consumption. In accordance with the study's aim of including a range of types and levels of ...

Family, religion, and identity in the Pakistani diaspora : a case study of young Pakistani men in Dublin and Boston
(2014)
Considine, Craig
Abstract:
THESIS 10538
In recent years, Western countries have received Pakistanis as religious fanatics and detrimental to national as well as international safety and politics. Pakistani communities in diaspora have, in turn, received negative attention for controversies surrounding religious activities and a noted lack of integration into host societies. In Ireland and the US, Pakistanis are faced with different challenges due to the migration histories of Pakistanis into these countries, the role of religion in Irish and American societies, and how ideas of the ?nation? have affected individual migrant lives. While the Pakistani diaspora is well researched as one of the largest diasporic communities in the world, little is known about these populations in Dublin and Boston. This study fills the gap in literature by examining the experiences of young Pakistani men through their engagement with family, religion, and identity. In comparing the experiences of young Pakistani men in Dublin...

The body, masculinities and racisim : social relations between migrant and dominant group boys in three inner city primary schools in Dublin

Garratt, Lindsey
Abstract:
THESIS 9566
This thesis explores the interactions and relationships between twenty migrant group boys and thirty-nine dominant group boys in three inner city multi-ethnic primary schools in North Inner City Dublin. Social relations between boys are analysed from a Bourdieusian phenomenology of social space to contend that racism and hegemonic masculine gender identities mutually construct each other through their intersection in the corporeal schema of the habitus. Data from two phases of fieldwork are analysed. The first phase was collected as part of the larger Trinity Immigration Initiative [TII], Children Youth and Community Relations Project [CYCR], 'Learning Together' and consist of fifty-five children, forty-seven boys and eight girls from three class groups [7-8 years old] collected over three periods of three weeks each between January and May 2008. Phase two revisits and re-interviews class group three one year on in May 2009 for the author's PhD study a...

Abstract:
THESIS 9036
Following historically low levels of reported cases of syphilis in Dublin in the 1990s there was a large outbreak of syphilis reported in 2001. Numerous interventions were implemented and the rates again decreased in 2003. In 2008 a cluster of five patients with ocular syphilis presented in a short time period. This prompted a review of the number of cases of syphilis presenting to the Department of Genitourinary Medicine and Infectious Diseases in St. James?s Hospital.

The housing paths and residential experiences of Polish newcomers to Dublin, Ireland
(2012)
Smith, Alana
Abstract:
THESIS 9611
Dublin city?s economic expansion and retraction have a cyclical effect with the housing market which is also impacted by the migration patterns of citizens from new member states of the European Union. Little is known about this group?s strategies, choices, constraints, and opportunities in the Irish housing system. Applying a transnational element to the housing pathways approach, a metaphorical construct which expands upon the housing careers concept by featuring the subjective experiences of a cohort as the reference for analysis, this thesis outlines the housing paths of 31 Polish residents of Dublin. The modified framework draws attention to the phenomenon that relates to the cohort; a group of motivated, educated, and professional individuals who exercise their agency across geographic boundaries over time.

MURPHY, ALEXANDRA
Abstract:
This thesis explores the phenomenon of visual arts exhibition organisations known as 'artist-run spaces' in Dublin, from 2005 to 2015. This marks a period of unprecedented growth of the phenomenon, followed by a rapid decline. Through in-depth interviews the experiences of some of the individuals who were involved in running these organisations are documented and analysed. This provides an intimate insight into the organisations, through which their modus operandi is revealed. Key areas of investigation include why the organisations are established, their activities, their governance and management structures, and how they are financed. The research reveals that these organisations provide access to studio facilities and vital opportunities for artists to exhibit. There is also evidence to suggest that they play an important role in supporting artists in developing and refining their professional practice. Thus, they make an important contribution to the Irish arts infrast...

Abstract:
The Iveagh Trust, founded by Sir Edward Cecil Guinness (later Lord Iveagh) in 1890, was a philanthropic housing institution established for the ?amelioration of the condition of the poor labouring classes of Dublin?. It was founded during a period when philanthropic giving was a widespread practice that aimed to provide affordable, clean and structurally sound accommodation for the poorest of the working class. This thesis will provide the first comprehensive analysis of the Iveagh Trust in the first fifty years since establishment. Analysis is carried out through the prism of a ?social looking-glass?, as a microcosm of wider Dublin, from three standpoints ? structural, organisational and communal. It will demonstrate that such philanthropic housing institutions, founded in the late Victorian period, were not just about bricks and mortar. Instead, the Trust constructed a self-reliant community that has flourished into the present day. A focal point of this thesis is centred on the ...

The Choral Foundation of the Chapel Royal, Dublin Castle, 1814?1922

Abstract:
The Chapel Royal of Dublin Castle, the household chapel of the Lord Lieutenant of Ireland, was opened for worship on Christmas Day 1814. It was established in imitation of the Chapel Royal of St James?s Palace, London, and like that foundation was served by a staff of clergy (a Dean, Sub-Dean, and honorary chaplains) and musicians (boy choristers, adult male singers, and an organist and choir master). The Chapel played a significant role in the interaction between the Lord Lieutenancy and the wider public. Although the Lord Lieutenant attended services at several churches in Dublin, the Chapel Royal was the only ecclesiastical foundation paid for and controlled by the government, and thus it was exempt from episcopal jurisdiction and functioned like a royal peculiar. The Chapel was in some respects a remarkable precursor of later liturgical and musical trends. Its musicians performed the choral service every Sunday morning, and its repertoire included music from the English cathedra...

Abstract:
THESIS 7854
Temperature, salinity, nutrient and chlorophyll concentrations, and Secchi depth were measured monthly at 41 stations in the Liffey estuary and Dublin Bay from June 2000 to June 2004. Analysis of nutrient composition and suspended solid concentrations was made daily on sewage effluent from the Ringsend sewage treatment plant during the same period. During this time the plant was being upgraded from primary to secondary treatment (sequential batch reactors).

The merchant community of Dublin in the early seventeenth century : a social, economic and political study
(2008)
Stapleton, Patricia
Abstract:
THESIS 8555
This thesis investigates Dublin merchants in the early seventeenth century within the framework of economic, social and political changes that characterised the period. Although sources were hard to come by in some areas of research, by adopting a thematic approach it was possible to utilise the findings from a wide range of extant material and reconstruct the various strands that made Dublin and its merchant community stand out in early seventeenth-century Ireland. Chapter one provides an economic backdrop to the thesis and shows that in the first four decades of the seventeenth century Dublin emerged as the most affluent port in Ireland in a period that experienced unprecedented economic growth. Although the merchant community of Dublin was previously dismissed as insignificant, chapter two illustrates that Dublin merchants, the majority of whom were Catholic, permeated every area of public life in the city.
