In 2014 the prohibition of the hijab in sporting competition was abolished by FIFA. In response an initiative designed to encourage and support the participation of Muslim women in football was launched in Dublin. This paper seeks to understand Diverse FC players' experiences through utilizing a cultural studies approach bolstered by a theoretical framework focussed on cultural and social capital and micro level interactions in order to explore the politics of participation when that participation may be policed by community members monitoring behaviours in accordance with the groups preferred norms. The paper demonstrates that the Diverse City project delivers inclusion in and inclusion through football and underscores the importance of understanding the experiences of our participants when developing strategies for inclusion in sports management and in wider society, pa...

Laboratory foundation model with pyrite-bearing mudstone fill
(2020)
McKeon, Éanna P.; O'Connell, Aidan M.; McCabe, Bryan A.
Abstract:
Damage to domestic dwellings in the greater Dublin area of Ireland engendered by the expansion of the underfloor fill material containing pyrite has become a high-profile national problem in recent years. In this paper, a novel physical model is described in which the profile of underfloor materials representative of Irish construction practice is modelled; the relevant vertical dimensions are at full scale. The study has enabled the rate of pyritiferous expansion to be ascertained over a period of 830 d at laboratory temperatures; rates of 0·0021 and 0·0008 (mm/mm)/year were observed with no loading and a pressure of 3·4 kPa on the concrete slab, respectively. The rates of expansion are broadly consistent with those obtained from reference pipe experiments. These data are an important frame of reference for anticipating the time required to generate a specific amount of floor movement in domestic dwellings. Pressures generated within the fill are low and consistent with the occurre...

Explaining EU migrant workers: Irish political interventions
(2016)
Power, Martin J.; Haynes, Amanda; Devereux, Eoin
Abstract:
Since the expansion of the European Union Ireland has experienced a significant increase in the proportion of immigrants from EU states (Quinn 2010). Between 2002 and 2006 the fastest growing category apart from Irish or UK nationals, were EU nationals (6.6% of the population). Polish nationals numbered 63,300 while the number of Lithuanian nationals was 24,600 (CSO Census 2006). This trend continued in the period to 2009: “Between 2005 and 2009 an average of 44 per cent of the immigration flow and 54 per cent of the non-Irish immigration flow has been made up of nationals of EU States that acceded in 2004 together with Romania and Bulgaria which acceded in 2006” (Quinn 2010, 3). The 2006 Census showed that Dublin South City had the highest concentration of foreign-nationals anywhere in the state, with the figure standing at 18.7% of the total population. Of this figure, 9.3% were EU citizens

Experimental investigation of the response of a driven pile in soft silt
(2020)
Gallagher, D.; Gavin, K.; McCabe, Bryan A.; Lehane, Barry M.
Abstract:
The paper describes the results of field tests carried out using highly instrumented piles at a very soft estuarine clayey silt deposit at Kinnegar, Belfast. The site has been used for a number of years as a geotechnical test bed site and has been comprehensively characterised using both in-situ tests including Cone Penetration Tests (CPT) and by means of an extensive laboratory test program. The instrumented pile used in the investigation was developed at University College Dublin and includes sensors which allow readings of both total radial stress and pore pressure during installation, equalisation and load testing to be made at a number of locations along the pile shaft. The radial stress and pore pressure developed during installation and equalisation are discussed in terms of the CPT qcnet value and compared with similar results from the literature.

Cahill, Rebecca; Pettigrew, Judith
Abstract:
Purpose – In the early to mid-twentieth century, psychiatrist-led occupational therapy departments emerged in Irish psychiatric hospitals. This marked a transition towards establishing rehabilitative services in institutional settings. This paper aims to examine the development of occupational therapy in Grangegorman Mental Hospital and its auxiliary hospital, Portrane Mental Hospital from 1934-1954. Design/methodology/approach – Historical documentary research methods were used to analyse primary source data from Grangegorman Committee Minutes, Inspector of Mental Hospital Reports, Boroughs of Mental Hospitals, Department of Foreign Affairs documents and newspaper archives. The archival data was analysed using both a chronological and thematic approach. Findings – The main key event emerged in 1935 when four Grangegorman nursing staff were sent to Cardiff Mental Hospital to undergo a six month training course in occupational therapy. The following themes emerged – “establishing occ...

An oral history of occupational therapy education in the Republic of Ireland
(2018)
Dunne, Brid; Pettigrew, Judith; Robinson, Katie
Abstract:
Introduction Historical research contributes to the critical perspectives called for in occupational therapy. Despite this, research on the history of occupational therapy education is limited. The only occupational therapy programme in the Republic of Ireland from 1963 to 1986 was the diploma at St Joseph's College of Occupational Therapy, Dublin, which followed the curriculum first of the Association of Occupational Therapists and from 1974 the British Association of Occupational Therapists. This study explores oral histories of pioneering students from that programme. Method Oral history interviews were conducted with 19 former students of the programme who studied between 1963 and 1970. Interviews were thematically analysed. Findings Participants described a curriculum with two subject foci: academic and activity-based subjects. Despite a focus on activity-based subjects in the curriculum, participants were ambivalent about their use in practice. They described a need t...

Farming for nature: the role of results-based payments
(2020)
O'Rourke, Eileen; Finn, John A.
Abstract:
Farming for Nature: the role of results-based payments’ is an edited book that collates several Irish experiences of developing and applying results-based approaches for the conservation of farmland biodiversity. This book is intended for an international audience of practitioners, policymakers and academics interested in results-based approaches for the conservation of biodiversity and the provision of ecosystem services. Results-based approaches are the focus of a growing discussion about improved biodiversity conservation and environmental performance of EU agri-environmental policies. Published by Teagasc and the National Parks and Wildlife Service in 2020, this book outlines lessons learned from a collection of Irish case studies that have implemented results-based approaches and payments for the conservation of farmland habitats and species. The case studies include prominent projects and programmes: the Burren Programme, AranLIFE, KerryLIFE, the NPWS Farm Plan Scheme and Resu...

Building a language community through radio in the age of social media: the case of Raidió na Life
(2020)
Day, Rosemary; Walsh, John
Abstract:
This paper investigates the motivations of volunteers in participating in broadcasting on a community radio station in the age of social media. The station chosen broadcasts in Irish, a minority language in Ireland, although it is also the state s national and first official language. It was founded to support and develop the community of Irish speakers in an English-speaking environment. Raidió na Life is based in Dublin and broadcasts to a mixed and dispersed population of Irish language speakers. One of the original aims of the station was to build a sense of community and linguistic empowerment for these people. Data generated by interviews and focus groups reveal that volunteers do not seem to share these clear-cut aims, in fact they seem to lack a sense of themselves as language or community activists. However, the performances of their roles as voluntary broadcasters, particularly in their engagement with their audiences on air and online, appear to be having the desired effe...

Is trust between AI institutions and the public “morally rotten?”
(2020)
Carter, Sarah
Abstract:
Developing artificial Intelligence (AI) technology has become a business of power. AI innovation is increasingly centralized in a few large companies – mainly, Google, Facebook, and Apple.1 Specialized data scientists - the backbone of these institutions - understand how AI functions, further creating a power dynamic between the layperson and the corporatized specialist. In the age of COVID-19, we have all become more reliant on technology companies and innovations to fulfill the needs of our new digital lives. We have little choice but to trust them in developing the AI technologies of the future.

Unravelling the myth of effective teaching in mathematics
(2014)
Prendergast, Mark; O'Donoghue, John
Abstract:
Effective teaching is the backbone of any successful education system with many arguing that it is the single biggest contributor to student success. However despite such importance, significant differences in teacher effectiveness are still evident in Irish classrooms at all levels of education. This research investigates the influence that individual teachers can have on students’ enjoyment of mathematics at second level and attempts to unravel the myth of effective teaching. The research started out as a follow on study that further analysed data collected by the authors when they designed a pedagogical framework with the aim of promoting student interest in algebra through effective teaching of the domain. This paper focuses entirely upon the quantitative results of the evaluation of that study with regard to whether there are differences in the enjoyment scores of students’ in different classes as a result of their individual teachers. The paper also looks to unravel the myth o...

Trinity Walton Club: What is its potential for promoting interest in STEM?
(2018)

Abstract:
Concerns are growing in many countries, including Ireland, regarding an inadequate number of graduates to meet workforce needs in science, technology, engineering and mathematics (STEM) fields. These graduate deficiencies are the result of low student uptake of STEM subjects and courses at post-primary and tertiary level education. Low uptake is partly a consequence of negative student attitudes towards STEM. Many students are losing interest in STEM at an early age due to an inability to see any relevance in their everyday lives. In light of such concerns, a Saturday afternoon club entitled “Trinity Walton Club” (TWC) was established in Trinity College Dublin with the purpose of uniting like-minded students to express, shape, inform and grow their interest in STEM. This club attempted to ‘bring STEM to life’ through thought provoking content, real world problems, contextualised analogies and projects. This paper describes the background to the TWC, reviews the literature around pro...

Abstract:

Higher educational organisations across the EU, and indeed globally, remain male-dominated. The fact that men occupy 86 per cent of all positions of Rector/ President/Vice Chancellor and 76 per cent of all full professorial positions, illustrates the way in which these organisations are designed by men for men. Their deeply embedded structural and cultural features reflect, reinforce and perpetuate patriarchal and more recently managerialist and neoliberal forces. This article provides an introduction to a Special Issue focussing on gender equality in higher education. Articles included offer a critique of how higher educational institutions across Ireland, the UK, Canada, Australia and New Zealand are addressing the perennial issue of gender equality. The Special Issue emanates from a symposium funded by the Irish Research Council and hosted in the Royal Irish Academy, Dublin...

Analyzing using software defined radios as wireless sensor network inspection and testing devices: An Internet of Things penetration testing perspective
(2020)

Abstract:
Wireless sensor network (WSN) research and development is producing viable solutions for various innovative applications, including critical areas such as the Internet of Things (IoT), which is becoming a significant feature of modern technology. WSNs form an integral component of the IoT infrastructure by, frequently, implementing the communication links between sensors and the access point or central coordinator. This design and use in IoT applications intensifies the incentive to attack WSNs as sensitive data is available and transmitted in wireless links, which inherently contain security vulnerabilities, especially from external malicious interference. To ensure satisfactory performance, safety and privacy, communication links and WSN devices must be secure. Hence, penetration testing to identify security vulnerabilities and responses to external intrusions is a prerequisite to forming secure connections and an overall secure network. Abstract:
This is the first published study of its kind in an Irish context, offering combined insights into the status and practice of Development Education in post-primary schools as well as an interrogation of how development issues are represented in the formal curriculum. It adopted a qualitative approach, enabling a rich description of what Development Education looks like in an Irish context and how it is understood in post-primary schools, as well as an in-depth exploration of teachers’ experiences and views about ‘doing’ Development Education in post-primary settings. Combining an analysis of curriculum materials (including 75 lesson plans and a similar number of textbooks) as well as in-depth interviews with 26 in-career teachers currently teaching Development Education in a broad and diverse cross-section of post-primary schools, the study provides a comprehensive portrait of Global Citizenship Education in Irish second-level schools.

‘The Cat’s Paw’: Helen Arthur, the act of resumption and The Popish pretenders to the forfeited estates in Ireland, 1700–03

Abstract:
This article examines the case of Helen Arthur, a Catholic and Jacobite Irish woman who travelled with her children to France following William III’s victory over James II in the War of the Two Kings (1689–91). It considers Helen’s circumstances and her representation in The Popish pretenders to the forfeited estates in Ireland, a pamphlet published in London in 1702 as a criticism of the act of resumption. The act, introduced by the English parliament in 1700, voided the majority of William III’s grants to favourites and supporters. Its provisions offered many dispossessed, including the dependants of outlawed males, a chance to reclaim compromised or forfeited property by submitting a claim to a board of trustees in Dublin. Helen Arthur missed the initial deadline for submissions, but secured an extension to submit through a clause in a 1701 supply bill, a development that brought her to the attention of the anonymous author of The Popish pretenders. Charting Helen’s efforts to re...

Abstract:
Harmony and Chord progressions are the foundational architecture of a number of genres of Western music, from Classical, to Jazz, to popular music. For any musician, mastering the rules can be an important step in learning the skills of composition. The rules are difficult to learn, however. There have been efforts to create innovative educational software displays but to date Virtual Reality (VR) systems have not been investigated. The innately physical nature of VR creates an immersive experience that is impossible with other approaches. This work explains our concept of a VR educational game for young adult learners upwards of certain Western music genres. It draws subtle analogies to the architecture of harmony by presenting a number of levels in which the user builds chords and progressions. The aim is that they journey towards interacting creatively with the harmonics representation. Suggestions are also given as to how an effective evaluation procedure may be carried out in t...

Abstract:
Massive-MIMO and beamforming techniques have long been proposed as a means of increasing cellular network capacity and improving signal to interference ratio performance. The implementation of such systems requires a large number of signal transmission paths. To realize this, a distributed array of power amplifiers (PAs) is likely to be needed. These PAs will possess similar, but unique, characteristics which will alter over time independently due to temperature drift and component ageing. In order to operate all PAs in both a linear and efficient fashion a linearisation technique, such as Digital Pre-Distortion (DPD), must be used. DPD algorithms benefit from reconfigurability, low latency and power efficiency, all traits associated with Field Programmable Gate Arrays (FPGAs). This demonstration shows how an FPGA, specifically a ZYNQ System on a Chip (SoC), can be used in tandem with a transceiver board, the FMCOMMS2, to implement a DPD system.

Abstract:
Examining the comments associated with YouTube postings of songs from the later decades of the 20th century can be fascinating. Many older people express how nostalgic the music might make them feel for that time in their lives, and how it evokes a desire to be young again. It is interesting to understand whether they reflect a social phenomenon only possible through modern technologies. The aim of this paper is to make an initial investigation. YouTube videos for Number 1 songs from the British charts since the 1960’s were identified. Their comments were extracted and labelled as being nostalgic or not. Two Machine learning techniques from the GATE tool were applied to the data for different feature sets to find which technique performed best at classifying nostalgia. The results show that, with cross-validation, the Decision Tree Classifier outperformed the Naïve Bayes. Additionally, it is shown that the feature set has an influence on the accuracy.
