Neural network modelling of a boiler combustion system
(1993)
Molloy, B.; Ringwood, John
Abstract:
Boiler combustion systems represent highly nonlinear systems with associated lags and delays which depend on operating point. Such systems represent a significant challenge to the control engineer. In this paper, we present a model typical of a medium-size industrial boiler, which highlights the difficulties associated with such systems. As a starting point for nonlinear control design, we demonstrate how a neural network may be used to obtain a concise functional description of the system, initially for fixed operating points and then for variation over the full range of operation.

Black Box Modelling of a Boiler System
(1992)
Ringwood, John
Abstract:
This paper describes the successful application of black-box techniques to modelling the dynamics of a 30 tonne/hour boiler system. The procedure for producing a model, with the aid of a CAD package, is straightforward and model validation results indicate the quality of the derived models. The models were used to diagnose problems with the control system and provide a test bed for further control designs.

Challenges of Transformative Adaptation: Insights from Flood Risk Management
(2018)
Clarke, Darren
Abstract:
Growing evidence suggests that adaptation will form a key component of successfully responding to climate change risks. Discussions surrounding adaptation have, until recently, placed emphasis on incremental change as a means of dealing with climate risks. However, increased attention is now being paid to transformative adaptation given the current scale of climate change impacts. Owing to its recent introduction into adaptation discussions however, little is known about the challenges associated with attempting transformative change. This thesis addresses this shortcoming. Specifically, it examines i) how and why barriers to transformative adaptation emerge; ii) how place disruption, place attachment and perceptions of governance processes are understood in response to transformative change and; iii) how incremental adaptation proceeds when transformation fails, using two case study locations of flood risk management in Ireland as examples of adaptation in practice (Clontarf, Count...

Reluctant co-operators: dairy farmers and the spread of creameries in Ireland 1886-1920
(2012)
Breathnach, Proinnsias
Abstract:
This chapter describes the origins and spread of the creamery system in Ireland between 1884 and 1920 and analyses the differing spatial patterns exhibited by the private and co-operative creamery sectors. The analysis supports the contention that Irish dairy farmers were only inclined to establish co-operative creameries where a private alternative was not available. Various indicators are employed to demonstrate the reluctance of Irish dairy farmers to co-operate and the reasons for this.

Use of Weather Inputs in Traffic Volume Forecasting
(2007)
Butler, Shane; Ringwood, John; Fay, Damien
Abstract:
In this paper, an examination of the effect of including rainfall inputs in the forecasting of daily vehicular traffic volumes is undertaken. A case study is carried out at a busy intersection in Dublin city to examine if any reduction in forecasting error can be obtained by the incorporation of rainfall inputs. This paper also demonstrates the value of incorporating lessons learned from linear time series modelling to the non-linear analysis undertaken.

On the closed-loop control of an argon plasma process
(2006)
Iordanov, Petar; Keville, Bernard; Ringwood, John; Doherty, Sean; Faulkner, Ronan
Abstract:
Closed-loop control of a plasma process for etching ap- plications is discussed in this study. Plasma processes are highly nonlinear systems that typically feature complex chemical and phys- ical reactions. A laboratory-based plasma reactor is presented in this work, and issues concerning its closed-loop control are discussed. A PID controller for the experimental plasma process is developed and its performance is analysed. The need for a more advance control methodology is studied and some appropriate control structures are proposed. Finally, a description of the practical implementation of real-time multivariable closed-loop control for the studied plasma re- actor is presented.

Ireland, Emigration and the New International Division of Labour.
(1991)
Breathnach, Proinnsias; Jackson, John A.
Abstract:
Migration has been a significant feature of the Irish demographic experience for at least three hundred years. During this period, up to ten million people left the island to live elsewhere (Fitzpatrick, 1984; Coward 1989. The sustained nature of emigration over such a long time span, combined with its high level relative to the population of the island, have conferred on Ireland a unique status in the modern history of emigration. The distinctive nature of Irish emigration may be attributed to the continued failure of the island's economy to provide acceptable employment opportunities in sufficient quantities, allied to the geographical and cultural proximity of regions where better opportunities were both available and accessible. This paper argues that Ireland's emigration experience is profoundly related to the island's integration, from the nineteenth century onwards, to an international economic system based initially on commercial, but increasingly on industr...

Agricultural change and the growth of the creamery system in Monaghan 1855-1920
(2017)
Breathnach, Proinnsias
Abstract:
This chapter examines how Monaghan's agricultural economy evolved in the period between the Famine and the partition oflreland in 1921. It begins with an outline of the general features oflrish agriculture in the 19th century which provides a contexr for analysing rrends within county Monaghan itself. A benchmark profile is then presented of the key features of the county's farm economy at the beginning of the review period, against which subsequent change is compared. The process of change is initially analysed for the period 1855- 1880, prior to the introduction to Ireland of the creamery system which was to have a major impact on fuming in Monaghan. The development of this system is then described in some depth, fOllowed by a review of how agriculture in general changed in the county between 1880 and 1920. A concluding section summarises the main findings of the chapter and the subsequent evolution of Monaghan's creamery sector.

Centenary Readings of A Portrait of the Artist as a Young Man Conference, 5–6 May 2016
(2016)
Fogarty, Matthew
Abstract:
There are few places finer to participate in one’s first Joyce conference, or indeed better equipped to host a centenary reappraisal of A Portrait of the Artist as Young Man, than the James Joyce Centre. Located at the very epicentre of the city forever immortalized by the author’s magnum opus, its neighbouring shopfronts offer a poignant snapshot of the ever-increasing impact made by the global upon local. Stretching either side of the Parnell monument, the amalgamation of Oriental food stores, multi-million dollar fast food chains and overseas supermarket conglomerates provide a stirring contrast to the elegant Georgian architecture that to this day still dignifies the hill of North Great George’s Street. Once inside the Centre’s Kenmare Room, the timewarping illusion is finally complete: on all sides one is surrounded by reproductions of portraits of the author and his family, while the great ceiling showcases the skilfully restored vision of master stuccodore, Michael Stapleton,...

Bereavement support in a hospice setting: the role of a Bereavement Information Evening
(2010)
Roberts, Amanda; McGilloway, Sinéad
Abstract:
Little attention has been paid to documenting the quality and effectiveness of hospice bereavement support programmes. This article reports findings from an evaluation of a bereavement information evening (BIE) that forms a part of the adult bereavement support service provided by a large hospice in Dublin. The findings indicate the usefulness of the BIE in providing mid-level support for people who may need more than an information leaflet but may not require more intensive one-to-one support, while also acting as a ‘gateway’ to more intensive bereavement services for those who find it difficult to ask for help. However, measures may need to be put in place to ensure those who are unable or do not wish to attend these kinds of events also receive information about the bereavement process. The data may also be useful to hospice bereavement support services in deciding how best to meet clients' varying levels of need.

Caring for children with learning disabilities: an exploratory study of parental strain and coping
(2007)
Kenny, Kate; McGilloway, Sinéad
Abstract:
Despite recurring concerns about the role and appropriate support of informal carers, little is known about the parental experience of caring for children with learning disabilities in Ireland. This study describes and analyses the nature and consequences of care and coping among parents of children (<16) with learning disabilities living in the Greater Dublin area. Participants (n = 32) completed the Caregiver Strain Questionnaire and an adapted version of the Carers Questionnaire which assessed: care tasks/behavioural difficulties; caregiver attitudes; service provision; and coping strategies. Qualitative analysis examined factors affecting carers’ ability to cope. Participants showed high levels of objective and subjective caregiver strain and most were receiving inadequate support. However, parents employed a range of strategies to help them cope more effectively. The qualitative data highlighted the difficulties and rewards of caregiving and the inadequacies of current servi...

Compact Airborne Image Mapping System (CAIMS)
(2007)
McCarthy, Tim; O'Riain, Gearoid; Fotheringham, Stewart
Abstract:
Airborne image mapping systems, to a large extent, remain the preserve of specialist aerial survey companies and research groups. This paper describes the current status of the CAIMS project, established in July 2006 at the National Centre of Geocomputation, National University of Ireland, Maynooth with their industrial partner; Compass Informatics, Dublin. It’s chief objective is to develop a compact, less complex, mobile airborne mapping system. Historically, aerial survey systems comprise technically complex and expensive image mapping systems. These high-end camera and navigation systems are usually installed in aircraft that have been specially adapted to carry out this activity. A dedicated full time team, including Survey Manager, Pilots and Observers are required to support this activity. Compounding the situation is the cost of advanced software modules and associated Data Processing specialists required to turn these data into useful georectified and orthorectified image p...

The emergence and evolution of urban planning in Ireland
(2001)
Bartley, Brendan; Waddington, Shelagh B.
Abstract:
We have described the operation of modern planning in Ireland in an earlier article (Bartley and Waddington, 2000). Here we track the evolution of the Irish planning system and identify some of its links with the U.K. system. We sketch the political and economic background in Ireland against which the modern form of compulsory planning was introduced. This provides a useful context for understanding the reasons for and timing of the introduction of mandatory planning to Ireland. We then examine the experience of planning in Dublin as a case study to illustrate the subsequent trajectory of Irish planning. A future article will analyse the 'problems' associated with contemporary planning in Ireland.

Maynooth Development Plan exercise
(1992)
Waddington, Shelagh B.
Abstract:
The following field exercise is designed for use with Leaving Certificate students. It is based on Maynooth, Co. Kildare, a town of approximately 5,000 inhabitants plus a large third level student population attending St. Patrick's College. The town has grown rapidly over the past sevetal years, becoming increasingly a dormitory settlement for Dublin. The exercise outlined here need not be carried out in Maynooth, as it may be readily adapted for use in any town or city area for which County Development Plan information is available. The exercise was "roadtested" byagroup of AGTI members on 16th May 1992, and I gratefully acknowledge their helpful comments on that occasion.

Regional weather and climates of the British Isles – Part 6: Ireland
(2014)
Sweeney, John
Abstract:
On 4 June 1944, the lighthouse keeper at Blacksod Bay on the far northwest of County Mayo relayed his usual weather observations to Dublin and on to London. On receiving the report from Blacksod, the Allied commanders decided to postpone for a day Operation Overlord that was to launch the invasion of German-occupied western Europe: a wise move since the Force 7 winds and heavy rain experienced in the Channel the next day could have seriously compromised the success of the operation. Sitting astride the main storm tracks, Ireland has always provided an early warning system, particularly for Britain, of forthcoming extreme events originating over the Atlantic, as well as a shield which lessens their severity.

Being a ‘citizen’ in the smart city: Up and down the scaffold of smart citizen participation: The Programmable City Working Paper 30

Cardullo, Paolo; Kitchin, Rob
Abstract:
This paper critically appraises citizens’ participation in the smart city. Reacting to critiques that the smart city is overly technocratic and instrumental, companies and cities have reframed their initiatives as ‘citizen-centric’. However, what ‘citizen-centric’ means in practice is rarely articulated. We draw on and extend Sherry Arnstein’s seminal work on participation in planning and renewal programmes to create the ‘Scaffold of Smart Citizen Participation’ – a conceptual tool to unpack the diverse ways in which the smart city frames citizens. We then use this scaffold to measure smart citizen inclusion, participation, and empowerment in smart city initiatives in Dublin, Ireland. Our analysis illustrates how most ‘citizen-centric’ smart city initiatives are rooted in stewardship, civic paternalism, and a neoliberal conception of citizenship that prioritizes consumption choice and individual autonomy within a framework of state and corporate defined constraints that prioritize m...

Abstract:
Walking from North King Street in Dublin's inner city, we arrived on Upper Dorset Street at the performance venue, the historic birthplace of Irish playwright Sean O'Casey. We bumped into Louise Lowe and 0wen Boss, artistic directors of ANU Productions who, in collaboration with artistic director of CoisCeim Dance Theatre, David Bolger, created These Rooms, the performance we had come to see. As the production was about to start, we headed to the fiont door to collect our tickets.

The timescape of smart cities: The Programmable City Working Paper 35
(2017)
Kitchin, Rob
Abstract:
To date, critical examinations of smart cities have largely ignored their temporality. In this paper I consider smart cities from a temporal perspective arguing that they produce a new timescape and constitute space-time machines. The first half of the paper examines temporal relations and rhythms, exploring how smart cities are the products of and contribute to space-time compression, create new urban polyrhythms, alter the practices of scheduling, and change the pace and tempos of everyday activities. The second half of the paper details how smart cities shape the nature of temporal modalities, considering how they reframe and utilise the relationship between the past, present and future. The analysis draws from a set of 43 interviews conducted in Dublin, Ireland, and highlights that much of the power of smart urbanism is derived from how it produces a new timescape, rather than simply reconfiguring spatial relations.

The lmprovisional City: Valuing urbanity beyond the chimera of permanence
(2016)

Abstract:
So-called temporary uses of urban space, including 'pop ups' or meanwhile spaces, have recently attracted much attention by urban professionals as providing short-term 'solutions' to the 'problem' of vacancy. Yet the ways in which these urban innovations are conceived, studied and evaluated continue to reify a capitalist framework of development and conceptual understanding of the city that valorises exchange value and permanence. The result is that little empirical research exists about smaller projects that offer the city and its residents many non-monetary benefits. In this article, we argue that evaluating urban space according to the dichotomy of permanent or temporary land use is problematic: it misses the fluidity and multiple rhythms of how places are made and spaces experienced that are inherent to the regular life of any city. Rather than temporary use, we use the concept of 'interim space' to consider projects that may be responsive...

Fiona Whelan - Enduring Place
(2017)
Kearns, Gerard
Abstract:
Rialto abuts the centre of the City of Dublin on its south-western side. When Fiona Whelan came to a studio there in 2004 she felt ‘immediately drawn’ to this predominantly working-class neighbourhood. Much of its public housing has since been demolished taking the population of the parish from 6,395 with 44% in public housing in 2006, to 3,639 including 24% in public housing in 2011. Whelan came because she ‘wanted to make art with young people,’ and, since 1980, the area had been home to one of the most progressive youth programmes in Ireland: ‘In an age of inequality where working class communities are oppressed the Rialto Youth Project is working towards bringing about social change providing an integrated youth service based on the needs of young people and in particular those most at risk.’ Whelan had first planned to stay nine months but after a dozen years she is still in Rialto: ‘for me, it’s an energy.’ The exuberance of the young people and the ambition of the artist you...

Abstract:
John McGahern’s attitude to many Irish writers from the first half of the twen - tieth century was often ambivalent. He instinctively disliked and distrusted the overt polemical stance adopted by many writers in the decades immediately fol - lowing Independence, even if he could find in those same writers qualities of style or vision that he admired and, on occasion, even echoed in his own fiction. His relationship with the poet Patrick Kavanagh is a case in point. As early as 1959 he wrote to Michael McLaverty that, “Kavanagh is an irresponsible critic and a careless poet. It is a pity he doesn’t take more care with his poems because he is richly gifted.” 1 On the one hand, McGahern deplored Kavanagh’s part in the brash literary culture that existed in Dublin in the 1940 s and 1950 s. He later im - mortalized his youthful experience, both of being subjected to what he described in an autobiographical essay from the 1990 s as “the doubtful joy of Kavanagh’s company,” an...
