The case of higher education provision in further education: leadership in the evolution of higher education in the post leaving certificate sector of the city of Dublin vocational education committee.
(2015)
Murray, Denis
Abstract:
The case of Higher Education provision in Further Education: Leadership in the evolution of Higher Education in the Post Leaving Certificate sector of the City of Dublin Vocational Education Committee. (Denis Murray, BA, MBS.) This research investigates evolutionary change in Further Education (FE) within the Post Leaving Certificate (PLC) sector with a particular emphasis on the development of Higher Education (HE) courses within the CDVEC. The objective of the study is to understand what role leadership played in this development and if an ‘institutional habitus‘ evolved where greater social and cultural capital was created or enhanced for learners who otherwise may have discontinued their education at an early stage. The methodology is qualitative using a case study consisting of semi structured, indepth interviews, with a small number of relevant stakeholders, a convenience survey of students pursuing higher education in colleges of further education and a convenience survey of...

National Forum of Inclusive Higher Education Providers ? together is better
(2019)
Aston, Desmond
Abstract:
The Inclusive National Higher Education Forum (INHEF), is a national interest group comprised of higher education providers and other professionals interested in supporting access routes and inclusive post secondary education initiatives to learners with intellectual disabilities. The mission of the INHEF is to provide a collaborative space for consultation between providers, with a view to driving strategic developments, informing policy debates, building capacity within higher education institutions to establish and deliver education programs for people with intellectual disabilities. The INHEF will have a particular focus of facilitating and improving the sustainability of inclusive higher education initiatives in the Republic of Ireland. In this article, Mr Des Aston, National & School Coordinator, Trinity Centre for People with Intellectual Disabilities (TCPID) and INHEF colleagues have compiled some examples of specific initiatives underway in four HEI?s in Ireland.

Adult education and training: issues emerging from the perspective of the higher education sector and work organizations
(2002)
Morrissey, Marie
Abstract:
The central purpose of this thesis is to analyse and discuss a number of selected issues that are relevant to adult students within the higher education sector and work organizations. A specific objective of the higher education sector should be to facilitate lifelong learning through the provision of adult education and training. There is a need for workers to up-date their knowledge and skills, and in relation to work organizations, adult education and training should be seen as important and necessary from the perspective of employees and employers. There is therefore a need for work organizations to invest in, and support employees adult education and training. The education and training of adults must be seen to occupy a central rather than a peripheral role within the higher education sector and work organizations. There is also a need for the higher education sector and work organizations to recognize and develop adequate and appropriate support structures in order to facilit...

The role of distance education in broadening access to Irish higher education
(2013)
Delaney, Lorraine; Fox, Seamus
Abstract:
Although there have been distance education programmes offered by Irish Higher Education institutions for over twenty-five years, little is known about those who graduate from these online distance education programmes such as; their socio-economic profile, why they chose distance education and the effect that completing a distance education programme has had on their lives and careers. Drawing on preliminary results from a survey of distance education graduates, this paper seeks to begin to address the gap in the research on this cohort of graduates. This paper argues that online distance education is providing opportunities for higher education attainment, in a very flexible manner, to students from a highly diverse background, who often cannot access higher education any other way. Furthermore, online distance education can play an even greater role in extending access into the future. However, to achieve this potential, the funding model will have to change to that recommende...

Toward an appropriate religious education for future teachers of religious education: principles for a theological education approach
(2013)
Culen, Sandra
Abstract:
This study considers what constitutes an appropriate religious education for student teachers of religious education in the second-level sector in the Republic of Ireland. The research adopts an interpretive approach to relevant documentary sources and traces the evolution of how the State and the Catholic Church, given its prominent role in that society, understand the term religious education. This analysis suggests that how the nature and purpose of religious education is understood is a significant context in developing an appropriate religious education for teachers of religious education. It is argued that religious education is best conceived of as a conversational activity that is hermeneutical in nature. How the religious educator is prepared to lead such a conversation is crucial. This concept of religious education is developed by drawing on Thomas Groome’s theological vision of appropriation and Robert Jackson’s educational concept of edification. The argument considers ...

Drug education: Irish considerations: proceedings of Health Education Bureau Conferences: Education against Addiction (1979): and International Workshop on Drug Education (1982).

Health Education Bureau (HEB)
Abstract:
The aim of this publication is to bring together the wealth of knowledge, research and pioneering work presented to delegates at the Health Education Bureau conferences. "Education Against Addiction", November 1979, and "International Workshop on Drug Education", November 1982. We feel the papers presented and the issues raised deserve a wider and more enduring audience than was possible at conference level. The conferences have shown that no magic formula exists for effective health education, They also showed that education against addiction is a responsibility which is community-based and which should be shared by families, schools, health professionals, legal systems and government departments. They pointed to the need for a specific component on drug education to be included in a formal health education programme in schools and they identified that the essence of drug education is related to developing young people's self esteem, assertiveness and decis...

The promotion of continuity between physical education and co-curricular physical activities: an Irish perspective
(2006)
MacPhail, Ann; Slattery, John
Abstract:
The main purpose of this study was to identify the extent to which Irish physical education teachers promote continuity between curricular physical education and extra-curricular physical activities in post-primary schools. The latter denotes the provision of activities outside the formal (physical education) curriculum, which are not compulsory for all students but offered as optional activities (Penney & Harris, 1997), now also commonly referred to as out-of-school-hours learning or provision. Two particular issues discussed are ways in which physical education can help promote physical activity outside of the physical education class and the identification of factors that may hinder continuity between physical education and extra-curricular activities. The physical education curriculum, staffing and the school ethos arose as elements that have the potential to promote continuity between physical education and extra-curricular activities in Irish post-primary schools.

Encouraging distance education? An analysis of eu policy on distance education, 1957-2004
(2005)
MacKeogh, Kay
Abstract:
This report analyses the development and implementation of the European Union’s policies in distance higher education 1957-2004; it identifies the actors involved in developing these policies; and it investigates the barriers to implementation in the form of the digital divide and attitudinal factors. From the 1960s, the pace of technological and economic change led to obsolescence of skills, and a demand for a more educated workforce. Distance education emerged in the 1960s and 70s as an instrument at national level to redress disadvantage, and to provide flexible, high-quality and cost-effective access to higher education to adults who were unable, for geographical, employment or personal reasons, to attend on-campus. The expansion of distance education led to the opening of a policy window in the 1980s with the Maastricht Treaty (1992) commitment to ‘encouraging the development of distance education’. Supported by influential policy entrepreneurs and networks, distance education ...

Abstract:
This conference and working paper identifies institutional, infrastructural and cultural barriers with regard to progression from Further Education and Training providers (FET) and Higher Education Institutions (HEIs) . It reveals a lack of data thus far for the Leinster region regarding progression, and for student success or otherwise once in the HEI environment. It names issues such as trust in curriculum and assessment outcomes and processes, and the fundamental challenge of competitiveness on a local scale. It draws attention to the need in particular for baseline information and transparency for learners and for us as a region, determined as we are to enable more seamless progression, providing relevant opportunities for future skills and other needs for learners regardless of pathway.

Teaching teachers: Building a post-compulsory education training and employment sector through teacher education
(2006)
Kamp, Annelies
Abstract:
This paper captures the experience of implementing an educational reform strategy. The development of Deakin University’s Graduate Diploma of Education (Applied Learning) (GDAL) was understood by its instigators as a platform for reform. The GDAL would respond to the challenge being put before education and training providers in late modern times: to prepare young people to create and engage with a learning society through their capacity for lifelong learning. These teacher education students would, ideally, bring skills and knowledge already gained in a professional career. While they would gain teacher registration they were better conceptualised as professional educators for an emerging post compulsory education, training and employment sector in the Australian state of Victoria: it was expected that graduates would not only teach in schools but would also move readily within the network of learning spaces that young people increasingly experience in their formal education. In th...

The efficacy of entrepreneurship education: perspectives of Irish graduate entrepreneurs
(2011)
Fenton, Mary; Barry, Almar
Abstract:
This paper presents an analysis of the views of Irish graduate entrepreneurs on the efficacy of entrepreneurship education in fostering their development as entrepreneurs. It answers three key questions: (a) what was the graduate entrepreneurs’ experience of undergraduate entrepreneurship education; (b) what was the graduate entrepreneurs’ experience of graduate entrepreneurship education; and (c) to what extent did entrepreneurship education prepare the graduate entrepreneurs to start their own business? The authors find that graduate entrepreneurs benefit from entrepreneurship education, particularly at graduate level, when it is more relevant, engaging and applied. They conclude that entrepreneurship education can be enhanced through experiential learning and the authentic experience of both students and lecturers.

Dance education in Ireland : an examination of Smith-Autard's art of dance model in teacher education and the Irish primary school curriculum
(2015)
Tanham, Gabrielle
Abstract:
THESIS 10650
A revised primary school curriculum was introduced to Irish schools in 1999. In that curriculum, dance is acknowledged as an area of arts education but delivered in physical education (Department of Education and Science, 1999a). Content and methodologies for the creative dance strand typify Laban?s (1948) educational model (Fitzpatrick, 2000). Successive Arts Council reports (Benson, 1979; Brinson, 1985; Leatherdale and Todd, 1998; Marzin, 2003) point to serious deficits in dance education in the Irish educational system. O?Dowd's (2006) study of the implementation process of the primary school dance strand indicates that less than one per cent of primary schools in Ireland delivered the dance syllabus in 2005.

Perceptions of visual communication design education in higher education in Ireland: A multi-case study from the design industry, institutes and graduates perspectives

DOWLING, FIONA
Abstract:
?Use your own vision and mentality in order to form design decisions + Don?t believe your professor? Annelys de Vet ? (Kiosoglou & Frank, Ed. 2013., p 34). The aim of the study was to evaluate and construct an explanation behind the currency that higher education degrees in design enjoy in Ireland. The Visual Communication (VC) design discipline at Bachelors (BA) level accounted for the greatest cohort of students leaving design HE in Ireland in the 1990s. This graphic design (GD/VC) domain, together with related programmes in design in digital media still account for the largest numbers of students in design at Higher Education (HE) in Ireland. The Opportunities in Design; Strategies for Growth in the Irish Design Sector report (1999, p.p.5.1.c-d) by PricewaterhouseCoopers/Bradley McGurk and more recently Harvey?s Irish Design Footprint: Economic Value and Characteristics report for the Department of Jobs, Enterprise and Innovation (DJEI, 2016 pp. vi-vii), outline the strategic...

Capacity building for primary physical education: enhancing teacher expertise for quality teaching and learning
(2007)
Murphy, Frances M.
Abstract:
The publication of the Physical Education Curriculum (1999) in Ireland represented a significant step in providing quality opportunities for the development of the child through physical education. The focus of this thesis is on the potential impact of a programme of professional development in physical education on the provision of improved programmes of physical education for children in Irish primary schools. The programme of professional development based on the Physical Education Curriculum was developed and implemented for primary teachers who were assigned responsibility for leading in-service provision for physical education in the primary school. This programme was provided on a phased basis as they taught in their own school contexts and as they embarked as tutors on the facilitation o f the national in-service programme for primary teachers. Underlying the development of the programme are principles of adult learning, teacher change, professional development and programme...

The State of Adult Education
(2004)
Fleming, Ted
Abstract:
I want to look at the state of adult education in Ireland. I am suggesting that the state here means both the condition in which we now find adult education and the role of the Irish State in adult education. I will briefly outline • some recent developments in adult education; • make some critical comments on the state of adult education; • look at the links between the State and the economy and civil society that have important implications for adult education.

Group work and facilitation skills: A feminist evaluation of their role in transformative Adult and Community Education. Volume 1

Abstract:
This chapter comprises a feminist evaluation of groupwork, which underpins many processes in adult education , community development and non-theraputic self-help groups, but in particular, the women's community education movement. This movement had ben well documented in many forms (for example, by Aontas, the Adult Education organisation; the Combat Poverty Agency; and Connolly, L. (1996), Connolly, B. (1997), O'Neill, (1992), among others). However I want to look at the assumptions and values that underpin the way in which this education is carried out.

Module 19: Community Education & Development
(2003)
Kenny, Michael
Abstract:
In this module you are introduced to a number of ideas related to adult and community education, and especially to the link between community education and community development. The presentation of this module is different to what you may be used to from other modules on this course. The core of the module consists of a three units, four academic papers on topics related to adult and community education written by theorists and practitioners in the field, two units related to rural literary writers, and the assignment. The papers cover a range of ideas related to the development and practice of adult and community education. The papers were written originally either as articles for academic journals or as presentations at academic conferences. You may find some of the content challenging. For this reason, a “companion” text is provided for each paper to set the context and to give you some guidance. This companion includes the following: • A brief introduction to each paper. • An o...

The reflective practitioner model as a means of evaluating development education practice: Post-primary teachers' self-reflections on 'doing' development education.
(2010)
Bracken, Meliosa; Bryan, Audrey
Abstract:
In this article, Melíosa Bracken and Audrey Bryan explore the usefulness of reflective practice as a self-evaluative learning tool for development educators involved in formal education settings. Drawing on data derived from the reflective practice portfolios of students enrolled in an initial teacher education programme as well as from in-depth interviews with in-career teachers, insights are offered into some of the pedagogical struggles, uncertainties and dilemmas faced by teachers of development or global issues in post-primary schools in the Republic of Ireland. The findings are drawn from a much larger forthcoming study supported by Irish Aid which critically explores how the so-called ‘developing world’ gets constructed as ‘knowable’ to young people in an Irish context.

Socialisation, Role theory, and Infrapolitics: Officers of the Irish Defence Forces and Civilian Higher Education since the 1960s
(2020)
GIBSON, ANDREW GERARD
Abstract:
The military profession has a long history, and its institutions of education have been central to the development of military officers. Questions about the higher education of officers became increasingly important in the wake of World War 2 and the changing nature of military authority and the roles that military officers would be expected to fill. In Ireland these changes became manifest in the advent of the decision in 1969 to send Army officers to university in University College Galway. Combining documentary and archival research with data generated through semi-structured interviews with 46 retired and serving officers, it adopts a conceptual framework of role theory combined with ideas from James C. Scott in a case study approach to examine the origins and effects of the USAC scheme for the civilian higher education of Irish military officers since 1969. It answers the question of how officers in the Defence Forces interacted with civilian higher education at undergraduate l...

(2012)
Murtagh, Desmond
Abstract:
The importance of adult and further education is stressed by national, European and international policy documents as being critical to economic, social and cultural initiatives, capable of benefiting all sectors of society. In Ireland, the current economic recession, financial crisis, increased unemployment and enforced emigration has created an urgent need to re-shape the adult education provision to meet the educational, social and skill needs of society with particular emphasis on the workforce and the unemployed. This thesis sets out to evaluate the effectiveness of County Kildare VEC adult education service. It strives to discover if Kildare VEC adult education service is adequately and strategically equipped to meet the needs of students in the future. This thesis investigates if appropriate courses and programmes are available to achieve the most effective outcomes for students within the current environment. The study describes the current educational, social and econ...

Why not education? The necessity for welfare to education programmes to alleviate the social exclusion of welfare recipients in Ireland
(2006)
Power, Martin J.
Abstract:
In this paper I offer a critical appraisal of the value of welfare to education programmes in alleviating the social exclusion of welfare recipients in Ireland. Education is located as a key resource to be utilised in the fight against social exclusion. The paper suggests the function of education with regards to social inclusion is to promote relative social mobility. It is noted that in modern capitalist societies educational credentials are a key determinant of ones social class. Consequently education has a dual role in improving the individual's class position and additionally in potentially reducing the gap between those at the top of the hierarchy of economic power and those at the bottom. The paper takes the view that it is beneficial to society as a whole to specifically fund access to third level education for people on welfare. It is suggested that funding access for these groups is more likely to result in employment for them, more likely to sustain employment, and...

An evaluation of a blended programme of teacher education in Ireland
(2015)
McHugh, Bernadette
Abstract:
The purpose of this research was to examine the blended-learning primary teacher education course, the Higher Diploma in Arts in Education (HDAPE), offered by Hibernia College in Ireland with a view to ascertaining what can be learned from this unique course that might inform future practice at college and national levels. An investigation of this blended-learning course is warranted as it has not been conducted previously and thereby this research adds to the bank of knowledge on teacher education. Hibernia College is unique because it is the only private provider of Initial Teacher Education (ITE) for primary and post-primary teachers in Ireland. Furthermore it is the only provider to utilise a blended-learning approach and now as the largest provider of primary teachers in Ireland, Hibernia College exerts a significant influence on the number of primary teachers trained using the consecutive model of ITE. This researcher used a mixed methods approach gathering both qualitative ...
