The long-term benefits of community education for learners: Tensions between the developmental and economic points of view.
(2012)
Fallon, Ann
Abstract:
This study sets out to examine the long term benefits for those taking part in community education. This will be examined from the point of view of progression to employment which is often the primary requirement set out by those who fund the programme and the personal and social development which is core to the ethos of community education. There is a discrepancy between these two aspirations, which is currently one of the greatest challenges facing community education and those who work and manage these programmes. While a community education ideology prescribes a humanist, person centred approach, which is what we aim to provide, those who fund this sector are interested in the economic aspect with progression to employment their primary goal. Other challenges which community education are facing will be explored including changes in the structures of this sector, FETAC accreditation, funding reductions and other cutbacks, as a result of the economic downturn. The research concen...

Education as a discipline of thought and action: a memorial to John Wilson
(2006)
Hogan, Padraig
Abstract:
The late John Wilson has long been a champion of education as a human undertaking with an integrity of its own, as distinct from one that is essentially subordinate to extrinsic interests and influences (e.g. religious, political, commercial). He has also been a fearless critic of forms of thinking that he regarded as failing to articulate adequately that integrity. In keeping with this view he has boldly argued that the philosophy of education must be conceived and practised as a sui generis activity. In this memorial essay I am keen to show that Wilson is right, and crucially so, in arguing that education is a field of action in its own right and in maintaining that the philosophy of education is a sui generis activity. I am also keen to illustrate however, that Wilson is wrong in decisive respects in how he conceives of the sui generis character of the philosophy of education and in the restricted understanding of education as a practice that flows from this conception. Education and allocation of skills in Tunisia: evidence from an education reform
(2013)
Pekkarinen, Tuomas; Pellicer, Miquel
Abstract:
An often cited explanation for the weak growth effects of education in developing countries is the misallocation of educated workers to inefficient activities in the public sector. This paper assesses the strength of this argument by studying the effect of educational attainment on employment status of Tunisian men. We exploit policy changes that restricted access to secondary education in the 1970’s as an instrument for education and use data from 2004 Tunisian census as well as 2010 Labor Force Survey to estimate the effect of education on working in different sectors and within specific occupational categories. Consistently with the misallocation argument, we find that education increases employment, but that this increase is concentrated either in relatively low skill white collar occupations or in the public sector. Given that our instrument probably affected the academically weaker students this pattern of results suggests that the public sector might inefficiently reward titles.

Sex education, first sex and sexual health outcomes in adulthood: findings from a nationally representative sexual health survey
(2014)
Bourke, Ashling; Boduszek, Daniel; Kelleher, Caroline; McBride, Orla; Morgan, Karen
Abstract:
This study investigated the relationship between sex education received at school and sexual health behaviours at first sex and later in adulthood, using nationally representative data. Respondents were adults from the 2010 Irish Contraception and Crisis Pregnancy Survey (n = 3002), a cross-sectional survey designed to assess knowledge, attitudes and behaviours relating to sex, contraception and pregnancy in Ireland. A multinomial logistic regression investigated the predictors of age and contraception use at first sex Respondents who received sex education were more likely to have first sex at an older age and use contraception on this occasion. Sex education also significantly increased the likelihood of using contraception at first sex, when first sex occurred before 17 years of age. Regression analyses also investigated the effect of sex education and sexual health behaviours into adulthood. Sex education was negatively associated with experiencing a crisis pregnancy and positiv...

Technology-enhanced learning supporting engagement, assessment, and reflection in higher education science
(2019)
Roche, Joseph
Abstract:
In this paper, the results of a study conducted in higher education science across three groups of early-career scientists in the same university?undergraduate students, masters students, and doctoral students?will be presented. All three groups were taking similar versions of a Science & Society module that focused on the roles and responsibilities of scientists. The students from these groups provided short continuous feedback before, during, and after each lecture in the module, and focus groups were conducted with the students at the end of each module. The main factors being considered were the benefits and challenges of technology-enhanced learning in regards to student engagement, assessment, and reflection. This work highlighted that while the benefits are numerous, the challenges can often vary depending on the students' current level of higher education science.

Socialization of prospective physical education teachers: the story of new blood
(2000)
O'Bryant, Camille P; O'Sullivan, Mary; Raudensky, Jeanne
Abstract:
There has been much criticism of how teachers are prepared to teach and physical education has not been immune from this criticism. Despite numerous efforts to improve the content and focus of teacher education programmes there is still a paucity of programme evaluation research on the effcacy of these teacher education programmes (Metzler & Tjeerdsma, 1998). This paper reports on part of a yearlong investigation on the effcacy of a graduate physical education teacher education programme to prepare teachers. The focus of this aspect of the study was to identify what attracted graduate students to pursue a teaching career and what beliefs they held about physical education teachers and teaching. This was a qualitative case study and multiple data sources were gathered to address the research questions. The data sources included interviews, analyses of the students’ autobiographical statements, and observations of their teaching, critical incidents from their teaching and peer res...

Media education and the Irish second level curriculum: problems and possibilities
(1990)
Lynskey, Eamonn
Abstract:
This dissertation argues that Media Education at secondlevel schooling is desirable on a number of grounds and discusses the problems and possibilities, both past and projected, associated with its introduction into the Irish second-level curriculum. The term 'Media education7 here denotes the interdisciplinary study of mass communication media which can inform teaching and learning in different 'subject' areas. It includes the conception of 'Media Studies' as a discrete and separate subject area in itself. Chapter One (INTRODUCTION) traces the development of Media Education at second-level in the Republic of Ireland during the last two decades and indicate some problems encountered and some which remain. Chapter two (POPULAR OPINION AND THE MASS MEDIA), explores popular attitudes to the media, the origins of these attitudes, and their implications for media education. Chapter Three (RATIONALES and AIMS) advances arguments for media education, grounded with...

Thomas Davis's education policies: theory and practice

Thomas Davis's education policies: theory and practice
(2014)
Conneally, John
Abstract:
This thesis explores the education policies of Thomas Davis. On the eve of the Great Famine Ireland was economically impoverished and politically dependent. The Irish people had a subservient mentality, were mainly uneducated and were unaware of their potential. He believed that education would develop a self-reliant, self-sufficient people; it would create a new generation of leaders and citizens necessary to transform Ireland into a prosperous, independent nation. This thesis explores his education philosophy which was political in orientation; he called for reform of university education so that it would educate leaders who were knowledgeable, patriotic and responsible. He formulated a curriculum which consisted of knowledge that would have direct use and application in public life; his curriculum included moral philosophy, oratory, philological studies and history. His contribution to the debate on the Queens Colleges bill, 1845, is explored including his public disagreement wit...

Educational developmentalists divided? Patrick Cannon, Patrick Hillery and the economics of education in the early 1960s
(2010)
Murray, Peter
Abstract:
The catalytic effect of the OECD-linked study that produced Investment in Education is a much celebrated episode of Ireland?s modernisation. A remarkably broad cross-departmental consensus supported the initiative. Bureaucratic caution and ministerial self-preservation were set aside to allow a ?warts and all? portrait of Irish education to be painted by the study team. Special efforts were made to focus public attention on the findings of a damning report that legitimated a quickening pace of government action to increase access to an expanded, rationalised and reoriented education system. But, as well as developmentalist triumph over conservatism in the education field, there was also significant division between state and civil society developmentalists. This is examined through an analysis of the relationship between the Federation of Lay Catholic Secondary Schools and the Department of Education.

Technical education for commerce
(1906)
Oldham, C.H.
Abstract:
I imagine that to many of my audience tonight there must appear to be something incongruous about the title of this paper. Technical Schools are well understood in these countries to mean institutions that educate students for industrial life. There is no very great definiteness attaching to the term Technical Education. There is in particular some haziness as to where "teaching the practice of any trade or industry or employment" begins and "instruction in the principles of science and art applicable to industries" leaves off. But there is a pretty widespread impression that Technical Education means education for industry, for the workshop; and that it does not include education for commerce, for the counting-house. The latter has come to be called "Commercial Education"; and schools for the promotion of Commercial Education, where they exist, are usually called Schools of Commerce rather than Technical Schools.

The Impact of Parental Earnings and Education on the Schooling of Children
(2011)
O'SULLIVAN, VINCENT
Abstract:
This paper addresses the intergenerational transmission of education and investigates the extent to which early school leaving (at age 16) may be due to variations in parental background. An important contribution of the paper is to distinguish between the causal effects of parental income and parental education levels. Least squares estimation reveals conventional results ? weak effects of income (when the child is 16), stronger effects of maternal education than paternal, and stronger effects on sons than daughters. We find that the education effects remain significant even when household income is included. However, when we use instrumental variable methods to simultaneously account for the endogeneity of parental education and paternal income, only maternal education remains significant (for daughters only) and becomes stronger. These estimates are consistent across various sets of instruments. The impact of paternal income varies between specifications but becomes ...

Sexuality education research has highlighted the importance of parental involvement. Investigating sexuality education frequently occurs via national sexual health surveys. Understanding the factors that influence parents in engaging in sexuality education would benefit from advances in research design and methods. This paper aims to identify key parental characteristics that predict parental involvement in sexuality education while also encouraging debate on how this topic is optimally investigated.
Pharmacy education is provided for in Ireland by three Higher Education Institutions; The Royal College of Surgeons in Ireland (RCSI), University of Dublin, Trinity College (TCD), and University College Cork (UCC). TCD was the sole provider of the undergraduate programme from 1977 until 2002 when the School of Pharmacy RCSI opened. The Schools educate approximately 150 students per annum. Applications to study pharmacy are far in excess of the places available as demand is high, and the profession is therefore fortunate to attract students of high calibre.

There have been a number of recent developments which have transformed the landscape of pharmacye ducation and training in Ireland. An analysis of the training needs of staff in the further education sector in the Republic of Ireland.
(2005)
McNamara, Gerry; Mulcahy, Carmel; O'Hara, Joe
Abstract:
This article examines the training needs of educators working in the further education (FE), adult education, and Second Chance sectors in the Republic of Ireland. The research on which it is based was funded jointly by the European Union Leonardo da Vinci Programme and the Department of Education and Science of Ireland and took place from 1998 to 2002. It consisted of a survey of the coordinators of 162 further education (FE) centres and follow up interviews with 13 of these coordinators. The paper concentrates largely on the skills and competencies identified as the key to providing a quality service for the clientele of FE in Ireland. It begins by describing the different types of provision which the FE label refers to in Ireland and then presents some quantitative data which establishes the training deficit suffered by staff in the system. The main part of the paper is based on the interview data obtained, which offers a very complex picture of the skills and competencies percei...

The custody of spiritual education in Ireland
(2013)
O'Higgins-Norman, James; Renehan, Caroline
Abstract:
This chapter will explore the historical and sociological context of spiritual education in the Republic of Ireland. It will show how spirituality in educa- tion in Ireland has mostly been characterised by Jansenistic themes such as original sin, human depravity and the necessity of divine grace. Consequently, spirituality in education in Ireland has mostly been associated with Religious Education with an emphasis, although not exclusively, on cognitive learning. This understanding of spirituality, particularly with the development of non- faith-based schools, is only beginning to be replaced by a more holistic view of the person in which the spirit does not have to be identified with religious knowledge. In this chapter we understand spirituality as a fundamental concept that defines humanity as distinct from all other living things. It has to do with our relationship with self, with all other people, with the environment and with the transcendent. A person who has achieved s...

The role of nurse education in improving patient outcomes and patient satisfaction with nursing care: A multiple case study of nursing teams in three hospitals across Ireland and Germany.
(2016)
Lehwaldt, Daniela
Abstract:
Background: International large-scale research has found that nurse education at degree level contributes to reduced mortality and failure-to-rescue rates. The influences of hospital and national contexts and of different types of nurse education levels towards improved patient care seem often overlooked. Aim and objectives: The aim of this study was to explore the role of nurse education in improving patient outcomes and patient satisfaction with nursing care, taking into account different types of nurse education levels within different hospital-based and country-specific contexts. The objectives were: (1) to explore and compare nurse education levels, hospital and nurse structures, care processes and patient-related outcomes for selected nursing teams from the Irish and German arms of the RN4CAST project (2) to explore factors other than nurse education affecting patient outcomes, including country-specific factors. Methodology: A multiple case study design was utilised to conduc...

Geoscience Education in an Irish Context: A Need for Research
(2016)
ROCHE, JOSEPH
Abstract:
Perception and understanding of geoscience in Ireland by non -geoscientists ha ve no t been studied in depth, and an improvement in understanding how geoscience is perceived and engaged with will have significant impact on Ireland ?s ability to meet a range of challenges, including hotly d e- bated geoscience issues such as fossil fuel dependency, ra w mineral management, water security, and shale gas extraction (particularly fracking). Geoscience plays an important role in society, and the understanding of geoscience of an average Irish person will be based on formal education (at primary and secondar y level) and informal education through public outreach and news media. Geoscience is expanding in formal education and informal education is increasingly delivered o n- line. Geoscience education in Ireland has not been studied in detail, and a better unders tanding of the state of geoscience education could improve connecti...

Abstract:
Research from an international perspective in relation to the preparation of pre service teachers in physical education and special educational needs indicates that initial teacher training providers are inconsistent in the amount of time spent addressing the issue and the nature of curricular content (Vickerman, 2007). In Ireland, research of Meegan and MacPhail (2005) and Crawford (2011) indicates that physical education teachers do not feel adequately prepared to accommodate students with Special Educational Needs (SEN) in physical education classes. This study examined initial teacher training provision in Ireland in the training of pre service physical education teachers in SEN. The methodology used was qualitative and included questionnaires and interviews (n=4). Findings indicated that time allocation (semester long modules), working with children with disabilities in mainstream settings (school or leisure centre based), lack of collaboration with other PETE providers (n=4) a...

Abstract:
In June 2015 a group of experts in Software Process Improvement (SPI) and Education from all over the world gathered at the 1st International Workshop on Software Process Education, Training and Professionalism held in connection with 15th International Conference Software Process Improvement and Capability Determination. Discussions with key players in the relevant professional and personal certification fields, as well as experienced educators led to a consensus that it is time for the industry to rise to the new challenges and set out in a manifesto a common vision for educators and trainers together with a set of recommendations to address the challenges faced. At the workshop 14 “experts” from education and industry presented and discussed their “wisdom and experience” of the challenges faced for software process education, training and professionalism, especially with the background of the new modes of learning and teaching in higher education. Based on the presentations, 32 w...

Abstract:
THESIS 10206
This study was concerned with exploring the educational experiences and transition choices/opportunities of blind/vision impaired people in the Republic of Ireland. Until relatively recently the educational provision for blind/vision impaired children and young people occurred primarily within the special education system. Restructuring of the education system began in the 1990s leading to changes in special education including a language of inclusive education within policy initiatives. There has been a history of exclusion and missed opportunities among blind/vision impaired people within education and employment. Research has indicated a positive association between education and employment. The research questions examined in this study pertain to the educational experiences of blind/vision impaired people, the factors that impact on these experiences and, issues impacting on transition choices/opportunities.

'It's the other assessment that is the key': three Norwegian physical education teachers' engagement (or not) with assessment for learning
(2015)

Abstract:
The international agenda for assessment continues to convey a growing interest in assessment for learning (AfL) as a tool to support learning and enhance teaching. Complementing this, the recent literature on assessment in physical education acknowledges the need for physical educators to integrate AfL into their teaching and assessment practice as an important part of the future development of the subject. Appreciating that physical education must be recognized as part of the larger movement culture in society and is a place to learn about movement culture, this study explores how AfL is understood and enacted by physical education teachers and the extent to which such enactment complements or challenges learning movement cultures within physical education. This study shares how three Norwegian physical education teachers used AfL to term what they were practicing with respect to assessment in physical education. We follow the interactions of the selected teachers throughout focus ...

Abstract:
Developments in engineering, as well as modern technologies, are considered the most important requirements for the Twenty-First century in the globalised world. Recent research has shown that there is a significant knowledge gap in the required level of international communication for engineering graduates in the Arab world. This is because the medium of study there is primarily Arabic. To overcome this problem, it has become an urgent necessity to implement English as a medium of study. This paper presents an investigation, which was carried out from the available literature to find possible ways of implementing English Medium Instruction (EMI) in engineering education. This paper also focuses on some non-English speaking countries outside the Arab world, such as the Netherlands, Korea and Indonesia, which have already implemented EMI in engineering education. This study focuses on the problems faced by these non native-English speaking and non-Arabic countries and explores the p...
