Experimental Comparison of Wired Versus Wireless Video Streaming over IEEE 802.11b WLANs
(2006)
Debnath, Tanmoy; Cranley, Nicola; Davis, Mark
Abstract:

In this paper the performance of streaming MPEG-4 video with a video server located on the wired network streaming to wireless clients is compared with the performance of a video server located in the wireless network streaming to wireless video clients. We experimentally investigate the performance for a number of concurrent video streams with varying video frame sizes, frame rates and packetisation schemes. The performance is measured in terms of the key parameters of bit rate, loss rate and mean delay. We show how that there is a trade-off for these parameters for a wired and wireless located server. We show that a wired located server is susceptible to high loss rates when there are a number of concurrent video streams whilst the wireless located server has greater reliability in terms of loss rate but incurs greater delays due to having to compete to access to the medium.

Liquid Crystal Based Optical Switches
(2004)
Semenova, Yuliya; Dovgalets, S.; Panarin, Yu; Farrell, Gerald
Abstract:

Optical switches using two electro-optical effects in liquid crystals are proposed and investigated for incorporation in a switch matrix for optical networks. These two devices employ selective reflection in cholesteric layers and total reflection at the border between glass and nematic liquid crystal. Prototypes of these switches have been designed and their parameters have been investigated. Initial results suggest the switching contrast ratio of 38.5 and 42 dB, respectively, with insertion loss about 2.3…2.9 dB for polarized light.

Intelligibility of Electrolarynx Speech using a Novel Hands-Free Actuator
(2011)
Madden, Brian; Nolan, Mark; Burke, Ted; Condron, James; Coyle, Eugene
Abstract:
During voiced speech, the larynx provides quasi-periodic acoustic excitation of the vocal tract. In most electrolarynxes, mechanical vibrations are produced by a linear electromechanical actuator, the armature of which percusses against a metal or plastic plate at a frequency within the range of glottal excitation. In this paper, the intelligibility of speech produced using a novel hands-free actuator is compared to speech produced using a conventional electrolarynx. Two able-bodied speakers (one male, one female) performed a closed response test containing 28 monosyllabic words, once using a conventional electrolarynx and a second time using the novel design. The resulting audio recordings were randomized and replayed to ten listeners who recorded each word that they heard. The results show that the speech produced using the hands-free actuator was substantially more intelligible to the majority of listeners than that produced using the conventional electrolarynx. The new actuator...

Wideband Reconfigurable Rolled Planar Monopole Antenna
(2007)
Ruvio, Giuseppe; Ammann, Max
Abstract:

A novel technique to reconfigure the frequency range of a planar monopole antenna is presented. By adjusting the degree of spiral tightness, a shift of the well-matched operating frequency range is achieved. The proposed antenna is capable of covering the frequencies in the range from 2.9 to 15 GHz, depending on the degree of spiral tightness. The antenna yields a high-efficiency across the full operating bandwidth. Radiation patterns show good omni-directional features in all primary cuts and remain relatively stable with the change of antenna configuration, so that it is a remarkable candidate for indoor or mobile applications where a large frequency range and omnidirectional radiation are required.

Performance Analysis of Network-level QoS with Encoding Configuration for Unicast Video Streaming over IEEE 802.11 WLAN Networks
(2005)

Abstract:

Video streaming has a large impact on the resource requirements of the WLAN. However, there are many variables involved in video streaming, such as the video content being streamed, how the video is encoded and how it is sent. This makes the role of radio resource management extremely difficult. In this paper we investigate the effect that video encoding configurations has on the network resource requirements for unicast video streaming in a WLAN environment. We compare the network resource requirements of several content types encoded at various encoding configurations with varying I-frame frequencies, target encoding bit rates and hint track settings. We present two key findings: We show that by halving the hint track MTU values, the access requirements of the WLAN are increased by 20%. Furthermore, we show how the I-frame frequency of the encoded file relates to the resource requirement of the WLAN.

Unified Power Quality Conditioner: protection and performance enhancement
(2008)
Axente, Iurie, (Thesis)
Abstract:

The proliferation of power electronics-based equipment has produced a significant impact on the quality of electric power supply. Nowadays, much of the equipment is based on power electronic devices, often leading to problems of power quality. At the same time this equipment is typically equipped with microprocessor-based controllers which are quite sensitive to deviations from the ideal sinusoidal line voltage. Conventional power quality mitigation equipment is proving to be inadequate for an increasing number of applications, and this fact has attracted the attention of power engineers to develop dynamic and adjustable solutions to power quality problems. One modern and very promising solution that deals with both load current and supply voltage imperfections is the Unified Power Quality Conditioner (UPQC). This thesis investigates the development of UPQC protection scheme and control algorithms for enhanced performance. This work is carried out on a 12 kVA prototype UPQC...

Abstract:

Multimedia streaming applications are a demanding and challenging service to deliver over wireless networks. Such services have a large impact on the resource requirements of the WLAN. However, there are many variables involved in video streaming, such as the video content being streamed, how the video is encoded and how it is sent. This makes the role of radio resource management and the provision of QoS guarantees extremely difficult. In this paper we investigate the network resource requirements for three scenarios: a single unicast video streaming session; multiple unicast video streaming sessions and finally multiple unicast streaming sessions in the presence of background traffic. We present several key findings: we show the effect that the hint track MTU values has on the access and load requirements of the WLAN. We show that the WLAN becomes saturated when the offered load reaches a certain threshold that is related to the hint tract MTU setting. Finally, we present...

A Wireless Traffic Probe for Radio Resource Management and QoS Provisioning in IEEE 802.11 WLANs
(2004)
Davis, Mark
Abstract:

The emergence of real-time services such as voice over IP (VoIP) and video streaming imposes stringent requirements on the performance of a network if quality of service (QoS) targets are to be achieved. In the case of wireless networks, some form of radio resource management (RRM) is typically required to allocate the available resources among the contending stations in accordance with their needs and respective priorities. A critical aspect of any RRM scheme is the ability to monitor resource usage and to determine the resource requirements on a per-station basis. In this paper we describe a wireless traffic probe for IEEE 802.11 WLANs capable of obtaining this information and presenting it in a compact and intuitive format. The probe also shows how the wireless stations interact with one another in competing for the resources of the WLAN in a clear and quantifiable way. The results from the WLAN traffic probe obtained in a series of video streaming test scenarios are als...

An Experimental Analysis of the Call Capacity of IEEE 802.11b Wireless Local Area Networks for VoIP Telephony
(2006)
Keegan, Brian; Davis, Mark
Abstract:

In this paper we present the results from an experimental study of the call capacity of an IEEE 802.11b network when using VoIP telephony. Experiments include increasing the number of VoIP users in a wireless test-bed and increasing the level of background traffic until network saturation occurs. The experiments allow us to perform an analysis of the access point (AP) buffer dynamics. Results show that the network is capable of supporting up to 16 VoIP stations (STAs). Due to the operation of the IEEE 802.11 medium access control (MAC) mechanism, the AP acts as a bottleneck for all traffic destined for wireless STAs, in that significant delays can be incurred by VoIP packets which can lead to a poor perceived QoS by users. Consequently the performance of the AP downlink is the critical component in determining VoIP call capacity. We also show that large peak loads occur during periods of double-talk effectively reducing the capacity of the network.

Augmented control of a hands-free electrolarynx
(2011)
Madden, Brian; Condron, James; Coyle, Eugene
Abstract:
During voiced speech, the larynx acts as the sound source, providing a quasi-periodic excitation of the vocal tract. Following a total laryngectomy, some people speak using an electrolarynx which employs an electromechanical actuator to perform the excitatory function of the absent larynx. Drawbacks of conventional electrolarynx designs include the monotonic sound emitted, the need for a free-hand to operate the device, and the difficulty experienced by many laryngectomees in adapting to its use. One improvement to the electrolarynx, which clinicians and users frequently suggest, is the provision of a convenient hands-free control facility. This would allow more natural use of body language, as well as enabling the user to perform other manual tasks whilst speaking. An additional enhancement is the redevelopment of the devices' actuator to remove the self-radiated buzzing sound which is emitted during operation. The overall goal of this research is to investigate the implementa...

An Investigation of the Correlation between Passive Monitoring and Activie Probing Techniques used in WLAN Mesh Networks
(2008)
Zhang, Chenzhe; Davis, Mark
Abstract:

In recent years, Wireless Mesh Networks (WMNs) have emerged as a promising solution to provide low cost networks that extend Internet access and other networking services. Mesh routers form the backbone connectivity through cooperative routing in an often unstable wireless medium. Therefore, the techniques used to monitor and manage the performance metrics to help optimize the link performance in WMNs. This paper presents an assessment of the correlation between passive monitoring and active probing techniques used for link performance measurement in WMNs. This paper presents an assessment of the correlation between passive monitoring and active probing techniques used for link performance measurement in WMNs. The study reveals that by combining multiple performance metrics obtained by using passive monitoring, a good correlation with active probing can be achieved. We then analyze the reaction of the passive monitoring and active probing techniques to variations in the net...

An Assessment of the Audio Codec Performance in Voice over WLAN (VoWLAN) Systems
(2005)
Narbutt, Miroslaw; Davis, Mark
Abstract:

In this paper we present results of experimental investigation into the performance of three audio codecs (ITU-T G.711, G.723.1 and G.729A) under varying load conditions on a Voice over WLAN system utilizing the IEEE 802.11b wireless LAN standard. The analysis is based upon a new technique for estimating user satisfaction of speech quality calculated from packet delay and packet loss/late measurements. We also demonstrate the importance of the de-jitter buffer playout scheme for insuring speech quality. From our results we conclude that the use of the G.711 audio codec in conjunction with the new adaptive playout scheme gives the highest user satisfaction of the Voice over WLAN schemes considered.

Abstract:

In this paper the TCP sliding window mechanism is experimentally investigated as one of the possible causes of the unfairness often observed as IEEE802.11 wireless LANs. Optimisation of Multicast Routing in Wireless Mesh Networks
(2008)
Keegan, Brian; Kowalik, Karol; Davis, Mark
Abstract:

In recent years Wireless Mesh Networks have been deployed and grown in popularity in many metropolitan areas. The deployment of such networks has allowed clients to gain access to publicly available broadband networks. The implementation of wireless mesh networks requires that backhaul services (traditionally carried by wired networks) be maintained via wireless mesh points. Because of their structure, wireless mesh networks provide an excellent means for targeting a large group of end users or simply to relay data. This may be achieved by means of broadcasting or more specifically multicasting. The lack of standards and support for multicasting over wireless mesh networks makes this area very challenging as well as providing much scope for improvement.

Direct Least-Squares Ellipse Fitting
(2004)
Courtney, Jane; dePaor, Annraoi
Abstract:

Many biological and astronomical forms can be best represented by ellipses. While some more complex curves might represent the shape more accurately, ellipses have the advantage that they are easily parameterised and define the location, orientation and dimensions of the data more clearly. In this paper, we present a method of direct least-squares ellipse fitting by solving a generalised eigensystem. This is more efficient and more accurate than many alternative approaches to the ellipse-fitting problem such as fuzzy c-shells clustering and Hough transforms. This method was developed for human body modelling as part of a larger project to design a marker-free gait analysis system which is being undertaken at the National Rehabilitation Hospital, Dublin.

Systematic analysis of unknown integrated circuits
(2009)
Brutscheck, Michael, (Thesis)
Abstract:

In recent years the efficient and structured analysis of unknown CMOS integrated circuits (ICs) has attracted a lot of interest. Over the last decade different and non-invasive strategies have been developed to analyse unknown ICS. However, invasive procedures must always lead to the destruction of the system under investigation. Non-invasive approaches published so far have the disadvantage that ICs are analysed using very complex and very time consuming algorithms. The focus of this thesis is to develop a non-invasive and efficient procedure to determine fully unclassified digital CMOS ICs solely by their input-output behaviour. In this research, automata theory was used to develop algorithms to analyse and determine the behaviour of unknown ICs. A novel method to non-invasively identify the pins of the circuit using electrostatic discharge is presented. Then a division of the overall IC into different independent circuits is carried out using binary maximum sequences. Fu...

Electromagnetic Coupling Mechanism in a Layered Human Tissue Model as Reference for 434 MHz Medical Therapy Applicators
(2007)
Curto, Sergio; Ammann, Max
Abstract:

In order to minimize exposure to human tissue, electromagnetic interaction with antennas has benefited from a lot of research since hand-held communication transceivers became widely used consumer products. On the other hand, medical applications have been exploiting the ISM (industrial scientific and medical standard) 434 MHz frequency band for therapeutic applications such as hyperthermia. Various antennas have been used in hyperthermia applicators but advanced designs depend on improved knowledge of the radiated antenna modes and interacting influence of human tissue. As a preliminary step towards analyzing antennas interacting with tissues in the near- and far-fields, this study reports on the coupling mechanism of a half-wavelength dipole at 434 MHz. This will provide an experimental method for researching more suitable and efficient antennas for medical applications.

Comparative Evaluation of two Models of UPQC for Suitable Interface to Enhance Power Quality
(2007)
Basu, Malabika; Das, S. P.; Dubey, Gopal
Abstract:

Majority of the dispersed generations from renewable energy sources are connected to the grid through power electronic interface, which introduce additional harmonics in the distribution systems. Research is being carried out to integrate active filtering with specific interface such that a common power quality (PQ) platform could be achieved. For generalized solution, a unified power quality conditioner (UPQC) could be the most comprehensive PQ protecting device for sensitive non-linear loads, which require quality input supply. Also, load current harmonic isolation needs to be ensured for maintaining the quality of the supply current. The present paper describes two control scheme models for UPQC, for enhancing PQ of sensitive non-linear loads. Based on two different kinds of voltage compensation strategy, two control schemes have been designed, which are termed as UPQC-Q and UPQC-P. A comparative loading analysis has developed useful insight in finding the typical appli...

Study of the Behaviour of Video Streaming over IEEE 802.11b WLAN Networks
(2006)

Abstract:

The performance of video streaming over WLAN networks is not only influenced by the state of the network but also by the encoding configuration parameters of the video stream, such as the video content being streamed, how the vide is encoded and how it is transmitted. In this paper, we analyse the unique delay characteristic of video streaming applications in a WLAN environment. We show that the “burstiness” of video is due to the frame-based nature of encoded video. We show how each video frame is transmitted as a burst of packets that is queued at the Access Point causing the delay to exhibit a sawtooth-like characteristic over time that is related to the frame rate and frame structure of the encoded video. To our knowledge, this sawtooth-like characteristic of video streaming over WLAN has not been previously reported on. In this paper, not only do we consider the end-to-end delay, but more importantly we consider the total delay required to transmit the entire video fr...

Singlemode-Multimode-Singlemode Optical Fibre Structures for Optical Sensing
(2009)
Hatta, Agus Muhamad, (Thesis)
Abstract:

This thesis describes theoretical and experimental investigations on all-fibre multimode interference (MMI) devices using a singlemode-multimode-singlemode (SMS) fibre structure for use as a new type of edge filter for a ratiometric wavelength measurement system and as novel stand alone sensors. The use of two edge filters, so called X-type edge filters based on SMS fibre structures in a ratiometric wavelength measurement system is proposed and demonstrated. The use of X-type edge filters can improve the resolution and accuracy of wavelength measurement compared to the use of one edge filter in a conventional ratiometric system. Several aspects of the SMS edge filters have been investigated, including the effect of misalignment the SMS fibre cores due to fabrication tolerances, polarization dependence, and temperature dependence. These aspects can impair the performance of a ratiometric wavelength measurement system. Several approaches have been proposed and demonstrated to...

Small Antenna Options for Ultra-Wideband (UWB) Applications
(2009)
Kearney, David, (Thesis)
Abstract:

Ultra-Wideband (UWB) systems provide a means for short range high data rate wireless transmission between electronic devices. Portable devices and in particular, mobile handsets, have the potential to harness the unprecedented connectivity associated with UWB’s high speed, low power data transfer. Over the course of this work, a number of small antenna options for UWB mobile handset applications are presented. Two key subgroups of the 3.1 –10.6GHz UWB band are chosen and suitable antennas designed for both bands. At the upper end of the band, a ceramic planar inverted-F antenna is proposed to cover band groups 3 & 6 (6.3 – 9GHz). At the lower end of the band, a novel Dual-Band PIFA structure is presented and optimised to cover the band group 1 bands (3.1 – 4.8GHz). Design work is carried out using CST Microwave Studio simulation software, and all parameter sweeps of critical dimensions are presented, as well as an in-depth examination of E-fields, Surface Currents and R...

Feasibility of Using Passive Monitoring Techniques in Mesh Networks for the Support of Routing
(2010)
Zhang, Chenzhe, (Thesis)
Abstract:

In recent years, Wireless Mesh Networks (WMNs) have emerged as a promising solution to provide low cost access networks that extend Internet access and other networking services. Mesh routers form the backbone connectivity through cooperative routing in an often unstable wireless medium. Therefore, the techniques used to monitor and manage the performance of the wireless network are expected to play a significant role in providing the necessary performance metrics to help optimize the link performance in WMNs. This thesis initially presents an assessment of the correlation between passive monitoring and active probing techniques used for link performance measurement in single radio WMNs. The study reveals that by combining multiple performance metrics obtained by using passive monitoring, a high correlation with active probing can be achieved. The thesis then addresses the problem of the system performance degradation associated with simultaneous activation of multiple radi...

Information Hiding by Stochastic Diffusion and its Application to Printed Document Authentication
(2009)
Blackledge, Jonathan; Coyle, Eugene
Abstract:
The use of image based information exchange has grown rapidly over the years in terms of both e-to-e image storage and transmission and in terms of maintaining paper documents in electronic form. Further, with the dramatic improvements in the quality of COTS (Commercial-Off-The-Shelf) printing and scanning devices, the ability to counterfeit electronic and printed documents has become a widespread problem. Consequently, there has been an increasing demand to develop digital watermarking, information hiding and covert encryption methods which can be applied to both electronic and printed images (and documents) for the purposes of authentication, prevent unauthorized copying and, in the case of printed documents, withstand abuse and degradation before and during scanning. In this paper we consider the background to a new method to hiding image based information by diffusing it with a stochastic field (uniformly distributed noise). This ’diffusion only’ approach is used specifically to...

Energy Storage:Maximising Irelands Wind Energy Potential
(2010)
Kelly, Damien
Abstract:
Ireland plan's to generate up to 40% of its electricity from wind generation by 2020. This thesis outlines the problems that may be faced by the electricity system and illustrates the benefits that large scale energy storage can bring to the electricity system when trying to integrate large amounts of wind energy. Energy storage is currently a topical subject in Ireland as wind penetration increases and problems such as curtailment loom. This thesis outlines the storage capacities required to sufficiently aid the integration of wind energy in Ireland and outlines the value that large scale energy storage can bring to the Irish electricity system. Models of the system load and wind generation profile are devised and wind penetration scenarios representing 13%, 20%, 40% and 60% wind penetration are developed. These wind penetration scenarios are analysed and the curtailment levels associated with them are calculated. Storage is then introduced to the system models and these are a...
