A Method to Measure Reference Strain in FBG Strain Sensor Interrogation System Involving Actuators
(2007)
Rajan, Ginu; Semenova, Yuliya; Wu, Qiang; Farrell, Gerald; Wang, Pengfei
Abstract:
A method for reference strain measurement for FBG strain sensor in the testing stage while applying strain using actuators like piezo translators or micro screw is introduced. Unlike conventional methods of surface mounting, in our method the strain gauge is affixed directly to the optical fibre, which allows it to use with systems where the strain is applied directly using actuators while testing the FBG sensing system. Different bonding techniques were tested and a comparison with the results from calculated values are presented. Since the contact area between the fibre and strain gauge is very small a corrected gauge factor is calculated and is used to measure the strain transfer. As a demonstration of the developed method, the strain gauge is used as a reference in an edge filter based FBG sensors interrogation system, where the strain was applied using a micro screw. The measured strain using foil strain gauge affixed to the optical fibre and FBG sensor interrogation system are...

Power Coupling Between Two Step-Index Multimode Fibers of Different Numerical Apertures with an Angular Misalignment
(2004)
Gao, Cheng; Farrell, Gerald
Abstract:
<p>Coupling efficiency between two step- index multimode fibers of different numerical aper- tures with an angular misalignment is calculated. The theory is presented using radiometry and geometrical optics. The limit case of the calculation is consistent with a previously published result. The results may be useful for applications such as power launching between two types of fibers with different numerical apertures for example silica fiber and plastic optical fiber(POF) and with an angular misalignment.</p>

Abstract:
<p>A simple displacement sensor based on a bent singlemode-multimode-singlemode (SMS) fiber structure is proposed and experimentally investigated. The sensor offers a wider displacement range, not limited by the risk of fiber breakage, as well as a three-fold increase in displacement sensitivity by comparison with a straight SMS structure sensor. This sensor can be interrogated by either an optical spectral analyzer (OSA) or a ratiometric interrogation system: (1) if interrogated by an OSA assuming a resolution of 1 pm, it has a sensitivity of 28.2 nm for a displacement measurement range from 0 to 280 μm; (2) if interrogated by a ratiometric interrogation system, it has worst and best case resolutions of 556 and 38 nm respectively, for a displacement measurement range from 0 to 520 μm.</p>

High Performance Modified DSR Routing Protocol for WLAN Mesh Networks
(2010)
Ramadhan, Mustafa; Davis, Mark
Abstract:
<p>This work presents a cross-layer modification to the DSR protocol which discovers high throughput paths on multi-hop wireless mesh networks. The modified DSR incorporates a metric based upon the bandwidth availability at a node into the routing discovery mechanism. We introduce the Access Efficiency Factor (AEF) as an alternative metric to the hop-count for the routing selection mechanism. In this modification, the selected path is identified by finding a path with the highest minimum AEF value. The OPNET modeler has been employed to investigate the performance of the modified DSR protocol on randomly generated network opologies of different node densities. Our results suggest that employing the AEF as a routing discovery metric can significantly increase the average global throughput of wireless mesh networks.</p>

Abstract:
The strain and temperature dependencies of a step-index single-mode–multimode–single-mode (SMS) fiber structure are investigated numerically and experimentally. For intensity-based strain measurement using a single SMS fiber structure, at a selected wavelength, it is found that there is a high strain dependence, but also a temperature dependence that will induce strain measurement error. To minimize the temperature-induced strain measurement error, two SMS fiber structures are proposed and demonstrated in a ratiometric power measurement scheme; one SMS structure acts as the strain sensor, and the other SMS structure acts as the temperature monitor. The extracted temperature information is used to determine a strain value based on a suitable calibration of strain responses with temperature variations. It is demonstrated that for strain measurement from 0 to 1000 με within the temperature range from 10°C to 40°C, the proposed configuration can provide a strain and temperature resoluti...

Temperature Performance of a Macrobending Single-Mode Fiber-Based Refractometer
(2010)

Abstract:
The temperature dependence of polarization-dependent loss (PDL) for a macrobending standard single-mode fiber (SMF28) is investigated both theoretically and experimentally. The experimental results show an overall agreement with the proposed theoretical model over a temperature range from 0 C to 70 C. An SMF28-based edge filter is used as an example regarding temperature- dependent PDL performance. It is shown that the temperature variations have a significant influence on the polarization dependence of macrobending loss, and further impact on such a fiber bend loss edge filter used in a wavelength measurement application. It is also concluded that by using the proposed models, such a temperature-dependent birefringence can be beneficially predicted in bending fiber sensing applications.

Generating Natural Language Descriptions of Ontology Concepts

Abstract:
<p>This paper gives an overview of ongoing work on a system for the generation of NL descriptions of classes defined in OWL ontologies. We present a general structuring approach for such descriptions. Since OWL ontologies do not by default contain the information necessary for lexicalization, lexical information has to be added to the data via annotations. A rulebased mechanism for automatically deriving these annotations is presented.</p>

The Effects of Interface Protection Requirements on the Stability of Embedded Generation Connected to the Irish Distribution System
(2011)
Glennon, Damien, (Thesis)
Abstract:
<p>The electricity sector in Ireland has undergone a number of changes in the last 20 years. In the early 90’s the fuel mix was predominantly fossil fuel based with a very small percentage of renewables on the system. The electricity generation portfolio was dominated by coal/gas/peat fired power stations which used large synchronous machines to generate electricity. These synchronous machines provided the necessary system inertia and kept the system frequency stable. However, rising fuel costs, dwindling fossil fuel supplies, climate change etc. has driven the growth of renewable energy especially in the electricity sector. Current targets for renewable energy in the electricity sector are set at 40% by 2020. This is outlined in detail in the RES-E targets. As of July 2011, approximately 1700MW of renewable generation capacity was connected to the Irish power system with wind been the largest contributor. Furthermore, in April 2011 wind generation output reached 1323MW. With ...

Blind Single Channel Sound Source Separation
(2010)
Leddy, Mark, (Thesis)
Abstract:
<p>In recent years source separation has become an increasingly popular area of research in the signal processing community. The subject has found applications in a variety of fields such as medical imaging, sound and audio, econometrics and geophysics. This document will discuss the application of source separation techniques to the area of audio. Sound source separation is the process of observing a mixture signal made up of a number of sources, and from this mixture estimating the individual source signals. Audio source separation techniques may be crudely split into the following areas; techniques that utilise attributes of the sources, and that mimic methods used by the human auditory system to perform separation; and statistical, mathematical methods which do not necessarily take advantage of the attributes of sources. A further division is also possible whereby techniques utilise prior knowledge of sources, and those that do not, known as blind separation techniques. Th...

Abstract:
<p>Abstract. Some of the most critical issues of the influence of the thermal expansion of composite materials on embedded polarimetric sensors for measurements of strain and temperature are studied in this paper. A composite material sample with polarimetric fiber sensors embedded in two distinct layers of a multi-layer composite structure is fabricated and characterized. The polarimetric fiber sensors used in this study are based on panda type fiber and polarization maintaining photonic crystal fiber (PM-PCF). The temperature sensitivities of polarimetric fiber sensors with acrylate buffer coated and buffer stripped polarization maintaining optical fibers are measured in free space and compared to those for embedded in the composite material. It is found that a polarimetric fiber sensor with an acrylate coating embedded in the composite material shows the same response as the one in free space while the coating-stripped fiber polarimetric sensor shows significant temperature...

A Novel QoS-Aware MPEG-4 Video Delivery Algorithm over the Lossy IEEE 802.11 WLANs to Improve the Video Quality
(2012)
Debnath, Tanmoy, (Thesis)
Abstract:
<p>Video traffic is bursty in nature and has different network requirements compared to other types of traffic (e.g. voice, data) in terms of bandwidth, delay, jitter, and loss etc. So it becomes important to manage video traffic on a WLAN carefully to achieve acceptable levels of Quality of Service (QoS). The unique contribution of this work is that it presents experimental and simulation studies of the performance of real video content streamed over WLAN networks. Under various test scenarios the performance of the WLAN network in terms of delay, loss, throughput etc. is analysed in the presence of background traffic. The effects of different types of server configurations and access contention between stations are also investigated for IEEE 802.11b and IEEE 802.11e networks. This work specifically considers the IPB fame based nature of MPEG- 4 encoded video. A novel QoS aware MPEG-4 video delivery algorithm is proposed and evaluated using a computer model written in the C p...

Abstract:
<p>Video is a frame based media and video streaming is often described as “bursty” which has a large impact on the Quality of Service of the video streaming application over WLAN networks. In this paper the impact of background load on the performance of streaming MPEG-4 video with a video server located on the wired network streaming to wireless client is analysed. We experimentally investigate the performance for both uplink and downlink loads. The performance is measured in terms of the key parameters of bit rate, loss rate and mean delay since these are the primary factors that affect the perceived video quality at the receiver.</p>

Gauging VoIP Call Quality from 802.11 WLAN Resource Usage
(2006)
Narbutt, Miroslaw; Davis, Mark
Abstract:
<p>In this paper we experimentally study the relationship between resource utilization in the wireless LAN and the quality of VoIP calls transmitted over the wireless medium. Specifically we evaluate how its overall capacity is shared between three basic MAC bandwidth components (load, access and free) as the number of VoIP calls increases and how it influences transmission impairments (delay, loss and jitter) and thus call quality. Resource utilization (under the MAC bandwidth components framework) is calculated by a WLAN probe application that passively “sniffs” packets at the L2/MAC layer of the wireless medium and analyses their headers and temporal characteristics. The quality of VoIP calls is predicted using an extended version of the ITU-T E-model, which estimates user satisfaction from time varying transmission impairments. Through experimentation with various codecs and packetization schemes we found that as the load (number of calls) reaches the available capacity le...

Microstrip-fed Wideband Circularly Polarized Printed Antenna
(2010)
Bao, Xiulong; Ammann, Max; McEvoy, Patrick
Abstract:
A wideband circularly-polarized printed antenna is proposed, which employs an asymmetrical dipole and a slit in the ground plane which are fed by an L-shaped microstrip feedline using a via. The proposed antenna geometry is arranged so that the orthogonal surface currents, which are generated in the dipole, feedline and ground plane, have the appropriate phase to provide circular polarization. A parametric study of the key parameters is made and the mechanism for circular polarization is described. The measured results show that the impedance bandwidth is approximately 1.34 GHz (2.45 GHz to 3.79 GHz) and the 3 dB axial ratio bandwidth is approximately 770 MHz (2.88 GHz to 3.65 GHz) which represent fractional bandwidths of approximately 41% and 23%, respectively, with respect to a centre frequency of 3.3 GHz.

Abstract:
<p>A ceramic antenna which provides UWB functionality over band group 1 is proposed for integration into a mobile handset. Two separate PIFA antennas are incorporated into a single feed structure enabling separate resonances to be independently controlled and combined to achieve wide bandwidth. This surface mounted ceramic block antenna which maintains a volume of 315 mm³ is suitable for automated production. A prototype was tested and agreement with numerical work was observed for the S11, radiation pattern and efficiency.</p>

MeshScan: a Fast and Efficient Handoff Scheme for IEEE 802.11 Wireless Mesh Networks
(2010)
Chen, Yin, (Thesis)
Abstract:
<p>As a next generation network solution, Wireless Mesh Networks (WMN) provides fast Internet access to a large area, which is from university campus to city scale. In order to provide an uninterrupted Internet experience to a mobile client, a process called handoff is required to maintain the network connection from one Mesh Node (MN) to another MN. Ideally, handoff should be completely transparent to mobile users. A critical application like VoIP will require a handoff capability that transfers a call from one mesh node (MN) to another in less than 50 msec. However the current IEEE 802.11 standards do not address the handoff well. Studies have revealed that standard handoff on IEEE 802.11 WLANs incurs a latency of the order of hundreds of milliseconds to several seconds. Moreover, the discovery step in the handoff process accounts for more than 99% of this latency. The study addresses the latency in the discovery step by introducing an efficient and powerful client-side scan...

Investigation of Millimetre Wave Generation by stimulated Brillouin scattering for Radio Over Fibre Applications
(2008)
Junker, Markus, (Thesis)
Abstract:
<p>The rising demand for greater bandwidth and increased flexibility in modern telecommunication systems has lead to increased research activities in the field of Millimetre Wave-Photonics. The combination of an optical access network and the radio propagation of high data-rate signals provides a solution to meet these demands. Such structures are also known as Radio Over Fibre Systems. They implement the optical Millimetre Wave generation in a central station and the transmission of radio waves via a remote antenna unit to the radio cell. The expected data rate is very high, due to the fact that both the optical and the radio-link provide a large transmission bandwidth. This dissertation concerns the investigation of a new and simple method for the flexible generation of Millimetre Waves for application in Radio Over Fibre systems. The method is based on the heterodyne detection of two optical waves in a photo detector. By externally amplitude modulating the optical wave, dif...

For nearly 20 years this low key standard has been used as the basis for analyser host communications. A minor revision of the standard (ASTM1394-97) was published in 1998. This work gives a brief summary of the development of lab messages that led to the introduction and continued use of the standard. The authors also present a review and preliminary analysis of 30 implementations of ASTM E1394. The authors investigated 30 relevant analyser interfaces in order to identify the successfuland unsuccessful features of the ASTM E1394-97 standard by assessing the compliance and non-compliance of the chosen implementations with respect to different features of the standard.

Applying Computational Models of Spatial Prepositions to Visually Situated Dialog
(2009)

Abstract:
<p>This article describes the application of computational models of spatial prepositions to visually situated dialog systems. In these dialogs, spatial prepositions are important because people often use them to refer to entities in the visual context of a dialog. We first describe a generic architecture for a visually situated dialog system and highlight the interactions between the spatial cognition module, which provides the interface to the models of prepositional semantics, and the other components in the architecture. Following this, we present two new computational models of topological and projective spatial prepositions. The main novelty within these models is the fact that they account for the contextual effect which other distractor objects in a visual scene can have on the region described by a given preposition. We next present psycholinguistic tests evaluating our approach to distractor interference on prepositional semantics, and illustrate how these models are...

Wideband dual polarized directional base station antenna.
(2006)
Lerma, Francisco L., (Thesis)
Abstract:
<p>The thesis presents a study of different microwave radiators for wireless applications in the frequency range of 2.2 – 2.5GHz. The performance of microstrip patch antennas and dual polarized dipole antennas were evaluated numerically and experimentally verified. A single microstrip patch and a four- element microstrip array were simulated, fabricated and tested. Simulation was carried out by the finite integration time domain (FITD) method. Polarization diversity is realised using crossed dipoles printed elements. For the crossed dipole elements, two different feed arrangements were studied. Parameters such as return loss, isolation, radiation pattern, gain and bandwidth were measured and found to be in good agreement with simulation. Several techniques were used to obtain broadband performance. Balanced and unbalanced feeder systems, substrates effects and the use of planar elements were investigated. Significant achievements were achieved in bandwidth and port-to-port iso...

Reconfigurable Antenna with Elevation and Azimuth Beam Switching
(2010)
Nair, Shynu; Ammann, Max
Abstract:
A reconfigurable microstrip antenna is proposed for low-cost adaptive beam-switching applications. A small patch-slot-ring structure is used as the radiating element where an asymmetrical arrangement of p-i-n diodes is employed to switch the pattern in four directions. The antenna provides pattern switching of 65° and 45° in its fundamental mode for the elevation and azimuth planes, respectively. By maintaining the resonant frequency and beamwidth as relatively constant, beam switching is realized using a single feed point.

Localization Quality Assessment in Source Separation-Based Upmixing Algorithms
(2009)

Abstract:
In this paper we explore the source localisation accuracy and perceived spatial distortion of a source separation based upmix algorithm for 2 to 5 channel conversion. Unlike traditional upmixing techniques, source separation based techniques allow individual sources to be separated from the mixture and repositioned independently within the surround sound field. Generally, spectral artefacts and source interference generated during the source separation process are masked when the upmixed sound field is presented in its entirety; however, this can lead to perceived spatial distortion and ambiguous source localisation. Here, we use subjective testing to compare the localisation perceived on a purposely generated discrete presentation and an upmix (2 to 5 channel) of the same source material using a source separation based upmix algorithm.
