Design of a brushless A.C. servo-motor using neodymium iron boron permanent magnet meterial
(1988)
Allen, Ciaran P.
Abstract:
The excellent performance characteristics of Brushless Servo-motors have led to their widespread use in areas such as Robotics, CNC Machines and in the Aero-space Industry. The development of Neodymium Iron Boron permanent magnet material with the highest available Energy Product levels promised improved motor performance coupled with reduced magnet costs. However this material exhibits large changes in magnetic properties with temperature when compared with Samarium Cobalt magnets, the permanent magnet material commonly used in these applications. This research examines the feasibility of substituting Samarium Cobalt magnets with Neodymium magnets in a redesigned Servo-motor. Equations are developed which predict the motor performance based on design input data, machine physical dimensions and magnetic properties of the permanent magnet material. A winding analysis program is developed and is used to investigate the consequences of different winding configurations. The validity of...

Modelling and simulation of a Puma 560 manipulator for control system appraisal
(1988)
Anderson, George P.
Abstract:
The PUMA 560 Industrial Manipulator is presently controlled using a gain-scheduled PID control strategy. The implementation of adaptive control techniques can improve manipulator performance, [20]. One of the principal drawbacks with adaptive control is the difficulty in guaranteeing robustness over the complete operating range. This is particularly important when the plant is expensive and potentially self-damaging. An accurate, tuned, dynamic model, which includes the system’s main dynamics is a great asset to the control engineer. A complete model for the Puma 560 has not previously been developed. The research presented in this thesis derives a tuned and fully tested third order dynamic model for the first three links of the PUMA 560. A mathematical method of specifying the manipulator link structures and inter-relationships is discussed. By treating the manipulator as a connected chain of rigid bodies the Euler-Lagrange method is used to formulate second order dynamic equation...

Software and hardware implementation of the RSA public key cipher
(1988)
Brady, Paul
Abstract:
Cryptographic systems and their use in communications are presented. The advantages obtained by the use of a public key cipher and the importance of this in a commercial environment are stressed. Two two main public key ciphers are considered. The RSA public key cipher is introduced and various methods for implementing this cipher on a standard, nondedicated, 8 bit microprocessor are investigated. The performance of the different algorithms are evaluated and compared. Various ways of increasing the performance are considered. The limitations imposed by the performance on the practical use of the cipher are discussed. The importance of the key to the security of the cipher is assessed. Different forms of attack are mentioned and a procedure for generating keys, which minimise the probability of a sucessful attack is presented. This procedure is implemented on a minicomputer. Use of the method on personal computers or microprocessors is examined. Methods for performing multiplicati...

Low bit rate speech transmission: classified vector excitation coding
(1987)
Buggy, Brian
Abstract:
Vector excitation coding (VXC) is a speech digitisation technique growing in popularity. Problems associated with VXC systems are high computational complexity and poor reconstruction of plosives. The Pairwise Nearest Neighbour (PNN) clustering algorithm is proposed as an efficient method of codebook design. It is demonstrated to preserve plosives better than the Linde-Buzo-Gary (LBG) algorithm [34] and maintain similar quality to LBG for other speech Classification of the residual is then studied. This reduces codebook search complexity and enables a shortcut in computation of the PNN algorithm to be exploited.

Plasma enhanced chemical vapour deposition of thin carbon films
(1989)
Carey, Patrick W.
Abstract:
There have been considerable developments in the field of hard cartxm thin film deposition in the past decade. The films show properties of extreme hardness, chemical inertness and optical transparency and their use has been suggested for wear protective coatings. The results presented here concern the use of Plasma Enhanced Chemical Vapour Deposition (PECVD) to produce these films Details of the effects of the important deposition parameters on their mechanical properties are presented. The deposition system design and implementation are desenbed. The resultant film charactenstics are presented graphically as a function of the deposition vanables Films were produced which exhibited extreme hardness of up to 3000 Vickers. Their deposition rate was found to decrease with substrate temperature and increase with induced bias and pressure. The intrinsic stress and wear resistance were found to increase with the induced bias and substrate temperature but decreased as the pressure was in...

Abstract:
Nowadays, telecommunications networks like telephony networks, computer networks, and packet switched networks are all dedicated to only one or just a few types of services When a user wants to subscribe to various telecommunications services, he needs to be connected to different types of networks, which raises the cost of connection, and reduces the efficiency of the utilisation of the network.

Switched-capacitor filters and their application in data communications
(1988)
Collier, Martin
Abstract:
There have been considerable developments in the field of switched-capacitor filter design over the past decade. Those developments which allow the operating frequency range of switched-capacitor filters to be extended are considered. The solution to the approximation and synthesis problems for l.d.i.-based switched-capacitor ladder filters discovered by Scanlan is explained. Computer software which implements his technique for low-pass filters is presented. A number of techniques for synthesising the network are investigated. It is shown that numerical difficulties limit the order of filter which can be synthesised. The sensitivity properties of switched-capacitor ladder filters are explored. A technique, which has been implemented in software, for evaluating the amplitude sensitivity of such filters is described. This program is used to demonstrate that the frequency variable terminations in the equivalent circuit of the switched-capacitor ladder filter adversely affect its sensi...

Motor simulation of a shock absorber
(1996)
Clancy, Brian
Abstract:
The use of modern control theory to produce an electrical motor simulation of a Formula 1, Grand Pnx, passive motorcycle front suspension shock absorber is investigated. It is shown, using a test-rig comprising two permanent magnet DC motors directly coupled, that desired shock absorber responses to load forces can be achieved using model reference control. The controller feedback in this test rig is provided via a high resolution rotary position sensor. A stochastic Kalman filter is used to produce estimates of the load(disturbance), force and velocity from this position information. All states are then used in the controller. A mass, spring and damper model is chosen as a suitable representation of a shock absorber, and is assumed sufficiently complex to justify the control techniques used. This linear model is translated using mathematical techniques into a rotary equivalent that is compatible for use in the controller. This translation takes into account thermal effects, as wel...

Self tuning control of fermentation process
(1990)
Comerford, Philip
Abstract:
Control of fermentation processes is a complex problem due to the inherent non-lineanties and time varying characterstics of the process. The application of conventional single loop analogue controllers provides poor control due to problems in tuning individual loops and the lack of ability to implement complex controllers. The application of standard optimal techniques is compounded both by the complexity of the process and the lack of adequate models as a result of poorly understood dynamics. The lack of important transducers for product measurement coupled with the time varying parameters in a fermentation process provides a natural test for adaptive control techniques. This thesis includes details of modelling and simulation studies earned out on a Bakers Yeast fermentation process. A mathematical model of the growth of Saccharomyces Cerevisiae which desenbes oxidative and aerobic fermentative growth on glucose is presented. The parameters which influence the growth phases of t...

Simulation and performance of a statistical multiplexer in an ATM network
(1993)
Corry, Diarmuid
Abstract:
This report examines some of the issues arising m the implementation of statistical multiplexing in a broadband Integrated digital services network (B-ISDN) by analysis and simulation The BISDN concept is introduced and described. A review o f the current areas of research is given along with some of the important issues as they relate to telephone traffic. The report then focuses on the problem o f multiplexing voice traffic. A typical voice source is analysed and the traffic characteristics which result are described. The concept of statistical multiplexing is mtroduced. A review of the current literature studies relating to the problems of analysing multiplexed sources is given, with particular reference to the concept of cell level and burst level queues being separate and disparate components requiring different analytical approaches. Several models are mtroduced including the 3-state model not previously described in the literature. The queue behaviour resulting from a large...

Bi & tri dimensional scene description and composition in the MPEG-4 standard
(1998)
Cooke, Eddie
Abstract:
MPEG-4 is a new ISO/IEC standard being developed by MPEG (Moving Picture Experts Group). The standard is to be released in November 1998 and version 1 will be an International Standard in January 1999 The MPEG-4 standard addresses the new demands that arise in a world in which more and more audio-visual material is exchanged in digital form MPEG-4 addresses the coding of objects of various types. Not only traditional video and audio frames, but also natural video and audio objects as well as textures, text, 2- and 3-dimensional graphic primitives, and synthetic music and sound effects. Using MPEG-4 to reconstruct an audio-visual scene at a terminal, it is hence no longer sufficient to encode the raw audio-visual data and transmit it, as MPEG-2 does m order to synchronize video and audio. In MPEG-4, all objects are multiplexed together at the encoder and transported to the terminal Once de-multiplexed, these objects are composed at the terminal to construct and present to the end us...

Service creation and deployment on an intelligent network
(1999)
Collins, Michael
Abstract:
Active competition in the telecommunications industry has caused a dramatic shift in focus for public network operators. Service designers need to be able to easily and rapidly create services according to the customer’s requirements. This is achievable by using Intelligent Networks (INs). Two primary goals of service development under the Intelligent Network paradigm are rapid service crcation using new software technologies and the minimisation of service development costs through switch vendor independence. This thesis examines the development of an IN architecture and the deployment of two call control services on it using the ITU-T Service Independent Building Block (SIB) methodology. The services are deployed on a narrow-band Excel switching platform. Various aspects of the IN Conceptual Model (INCM) are examined with a particular emphasis on the middle two planes: the Global Functional Plane (GFP) and the Distributed Functional Plane (DFP). Representations of these planes ar...

Simulation of ATM multiplexer for bursty sources
(1993)
Conger, Chen
Abstract:
Asynchronous transfer mode ( ATM ) is a promising multiplexing and switching technique for implementing an integrated access as well as transport network and has been adopted by CCITT as a basis for the future broadband integrated services digital network ( BISDN ). The ATM technique allows digital communication of any type to share common transmission links and switching devices on a statistical multiplexing basis. Information is transmitted in the form of constant length cells. In an ATM network, the major parameters to cause ATM network performance deterioration are the cell loss and the cell delay at the buffer queue in the ATM multiplexer. Therefore, the performance parameters of an ATM multiplexer are specifically focused on the cell loss probability, the cell delay, and the distribution of queueing length at buffer m this study. The performance of an ATM multiplexer is studied, whose input consists of the superposition of homogeneous bursty ( ON/OFF ) sources, 1e , all the s...

Design and implementation of a TTCN to C translator
(1993)
Cunningham, Kenneth
Abstract:
The conformance testing of a protocol implementation, may be logically divided into, the specification of the abstract test suite (ATS) from a formal descnption of the protocol, and the subsequent derivation of the executable test suite (ETS) from the ATS specification. Our concern here is with the latter step, in particular, the automatic derivation of an ATS expressed in the Tree and Tabular Combined Notation (TTCN) to an executable C language equivalent. This process is currently a manual one, and as a consequence is error prone, time consuming, often repetitive and not necessarily consistent. To overcome these problems, there exists the real need for a computer aided, and if possible, fully automatic solution. This study descnbes the design and implementation of a fully working TTCN subset to C language translator, which takes a TTCN ATS and produces an equivalent ETS, with a minimal amount of manual intervention. The methodology used is logically divided into three stages dire...

Thermal mass flow measurement
(2000)
Duffy, Daniel F.
Abstract:
This thesis presents a comprehensive static model for a capillary type thermal massflow sensor for gases. Using such a sensor, a meter is constructed which measures gas mass flow by means of a bypass arrangement which ensures a constant flow ratio between the sensor and the meters’ mam flow element. The model equations are derived using steady state heat transfer theory for both a simplified one-dimensional and a multi-region two-dimensional case Consideration of a two-dimensional model allows for the analysis of additional model parameters such as gas conductivity and heat loss. However for such a model, the use of analytical methods to obtain a system solution is precluded due to the complexity of the system, and hence a numerical discretisation method, namely the finite difference scheme, is employed to compute the temperature field for the multiregional system. Heating coils are used to heat the sensor tube and are included in a bridge arrangement. The mass flow rate, as indica...

Simulation and performance analysis of a telecommunication system based on advanced intelligent network architecture
(1993)
Gulyani, Manish
Abstract:
This thesis describes the modelling and simulation of a telecommunication system based on Advanced Intelligent Network (AIN) architecture for provision of telecom services. It also presents an analysis of the performance of the Service Control Point under overload conditions with the implementation of Automatic Code Gap (ACG) controls. A telecommunications system was developed to demonstrate the operation of an intelligent network Further, a set of services including Call Forward, Call Back, Call Transfer and Automatic Call Distribution were implemented on the network. This was done to exhibit the relative ease with which new services can be developed and implemented on the AIN network in a system independent manner. Further, to evaluate the performance of the Service Control Point (SCP) under overload conditions an another system was developed. The functionality for implementing ACG controls on the system was also realised. In addition, an algorithm for selection of controls was d...

A comprehensive study of robot control algorithms
(1991)
Gibbs, Patrick J
Abstract:
The PUMA 560 Industrial Manipulator is presently controlled using a PID control strategy Robot manipulators are highly coupled, nonlinear mechanical systems designed to perform specific tasks. It is the function of any control algorithm to compute the input voltages or torques needed to follow a desired trajectory. The PID controller is detuned, so as to cater for variations in system behaviour. Thus, the performance of such a control algorithm is poor over the entire operating range of the robot and the need for more complex control strategies is clear. The research presented m this thesis derives a third order comprehensive dynamic model for the three primary robot joints, using the Euler-Lagrange formulation for the equations of motion. A simulation package is designed to model this dynamic system. Next, a wide range of different techniques are investigated in a simulation environment, to observe their performance on the computer model. These control algorithms range from Fixed ...

Abstract:
Voice coil actuators are devices used for moving an inertial load at extremely high accelerations and relocating it within micrometers over a limited range of travel. The motion produced may be linear or rotational and the travel times may be in the order of milliseconds or less. These actuators have applications in computer disk drives, high speed lens focusing, servo valves and laser scanning tools. In this thesis a digital controller is developed for use in voice coil actuator applications. The controller is designed for high accuracy and a fast dynamic response. Two design methods are presented both of which are developed, simulated and implemented using a laser-scanner experimental rig. In voice coils based systems, the instantaneous rotor position is normally measured using an electro-mechanical sensor connected to the shaft. The elimination of the electo-mechamcal sensor is considered. Simulation and experimental results are presented for the laser scanning system operating...

Abstract:
A method for recording and analyzing patient signals is described. The electrocardiogram and the pH in the lower oesophagus are simultaneously monitored over a 24 hour period. Signals are recorded onto cassette tape for later analysis. The pH record is analyzed for reflux episodes which are correlated with patient symptoms. The corresponding ECG episodes are checked for ischemia which appears as depression of the ST segment.

Vocal tract acoustic measurements and their application to articulatory modelling
(1997)
Hogan, Billy
Abstract:
In the field of speech research it is agreed that more real data is required to improve the articulatory modelling of the vocal tract. Acoustic techniques may be used to acquire vocal tract data. The advance of digital signal processing has allowed the development of new experimental techniques that allow fast and efficient measurements. DSP based measurement systems were set up, and acoustic impedance and transfer function measurements were performed on a wide variety of subjects in DCU’s semianechoic chamber. The measurement systems are compact and reproducible. The variation of the wall vibration load was investigated in a wide range of human subjects. The investigation was prompted by the question: Is the wall vibration load important in the study and implementation of vocal tract and articulatory models? The results point to the possible need in acoustic to articulatory inversion, of adapting the reference model to specific subjects by separately estimating the wall impedance...

Statistical characterisation and stochastic modelling of 1-layer variable bit rate H.261 video codec traffic

Abstract:
The Integrated Services Digital Network(ISDN) is under re-design to provide flexibility which will ensure efficient network utilisation in the provision of broadband services. The main broadband services envisaged for provision on the Broadband ISDN(B-ISDN) are : Videophone; Videoconferencing; Television and High Definition TV. The B-ISDN will be a packet switched network where the packets(cells) will be transferred by the Asynchronous Transfer Mode(ATM) concept. Unlike voice and data services, the impact video services will have on the BISDN is unknown and hence loss of information is difficult to predict. Present videophone terminals are based on the CCITT H.261 Video Coding standard hence the picture quality is variable because video codec traffic is transmitted at a constant rate. To maintain a constant quality picture the codec output data must be transmitted at a variable rate or alternatively, for constant rate video codecs extra information must be made available to achieve ...

Design of a DSP-based servo speed controller
(1992)

Abstract:
The brushless servo drive is arguably the most important emerging drive category for robotics, machine tools and other applications. This places increasingly high demands on the servo motor and controller. The brushless servo drive is arguably the most important emerging drive category for robotics, machine tools and other applications. This places increasingly high demands on the servo motor and controller. Two PID design methods are studied for the speed controller, an "analog design approach" and a "grapho-analytical pole-placement procedure". The former provided an easy design and the later resulted in a more satisfactory control performance. The thermal protection controller uses a generic lumped capacitance-resistance thermal model to predict the motor temperature. A current limit regulator is developed to maintain the motor temperature below this insulation limit, and to maximize the motor output once the limit is reached. A simulation scheme for this ...

System identification and paramenter estimation of a motorcycle suspension system
(1995)
Ledwidge, Jim
Abstract:
The use o f modem estimation theory to track the time-varying dynamics of a motorcycle suspension system is investigated. It is shown using software simulations and a test rig comprised of an analogue computer that a modified recursive least squares algorithm which incorporates a fault detection scheme is a suitable approach. The fault detection scheme incorporated in the modified algorithm detects system changes by monitoring the statistical properties of the estimators prediction error sequence. A mass, spring and damper model is chosen as a simple model with which to represent the dynamics of the suspension system. Initial estimates of the suspension parameters are found from static tests performed on a sample "Formula 1" front suspension unit. These estimates are incorporated into a software simulation and this simulation is used as a platform to examine the performance o f existing parameter estimation techniques and also to develop the modified least squares algori...

Modern global optimisation heuristics in the long term planning of telecommunication networks
(1995)
McGibney, James
Abstract:
Telecommunication transmission networks are faced with greatly increasing bandwidth demands due largely to a growth in the number of subscriber services on offer and the nature of these services. Existing (and new) operators are presented with the problem of installing new capacity to cater for this. The scale of these networks and the immense investment being undertaken suggests that much attention in planning be given to minimum cost design. This thesis is concerned with the area of network topological optimisation Network topological design problems require the optimal configuration of a network to meet a set of requirements while minimising total cost. Network topological optimisation problems are usually computationally difficult. Many such problems belong to the ¿VP-hard class of problems, for which no polynomial-time solution algorithms have been found As there are frequently a large number of diverse local optima, the use of pure local optimisation strategies can be rather...
