The ultimate motivation for this research is to investigate and quantify the nature of ultraviolet radiation for medical application over a variety of skin diseases. While application of both narrow-band and broad-band ultraviolet light have demonstrated great success in the treatment of a multitude of dermatological conditions, over-exposure to this section of the electromagnetic spectrum can be detrimental to human health, and the crux of the issue is striking a balance between maintaining a biologically effective dose while minimizing the impact on the overall health of the patient. Building models for gene regulation has been an important aim of Systems Biology over the past years, driven by the large amount of gene expression data that has become available. Models represent regulatory interactions between genes and transcription factors and can provide better understanding of biological processes, and means of simulating both natural and perturbed systems (e.g. those associated with disease). Gene regulatory network (GRN) quantitative modelling is still limited, however, due to data issues such as noise and restricted length of time series, typically used for GRN reverse engineering. These issues create an under-determination problem, with many models possibly fitting the data. However, large amounts of other types of biological data and knowledge are available, such as cross-platform measurements, knockout experiments, annotations, binding site affinities for transcription factors and so on. Abstract:
The Huawei/3DLife Grand Challenge Dataset provides multimodal recordings of Salsa dancing, consisting of audiovisual streams along with depth maps and inertial measurements. In this paper, we propose a system for augmented reality-based evaluations of Salsa dancer performances. An essential step for such a system is the automatic temporal synchronisation of the multiple modalities captured from different sensors, for which we propose efficient solutions. Furthermore, we contribute modules for the automatic analysis of dance performances and present an original software application, specifically designed for the evaluation scenario considered, which enables an enhanced dance visualisation experience, through the augmentation of the original media with the results of our automatic analyses.

The flip-chip technology is a high chip density solution to meet the demand for very large scale integration design. For wireless sensor node or some similar RF applications, due to the growing requirements for the wearable and implantable implementations, flip-chip appears to be a leading technology to realize the integration and miniaturization. In this paper, flip-chip is considered as part of the whole system to affect the RF performance. A simulation based design is presented to transfer the surface mount PCB board to the flip-chip die package for the RF applications. Models are built by Q3D Extractor to extract the equivalent circuit based on the parasitic parameters of the interconnections, for both bare die and wire-bonding technologies. For the last five decades, optical lithography has been used universally for the manufacture of integrated circuits. The drive towards smaller circuit feature size, and the resulting increase in resolution of lithography systems, has been achieved by changing the source type. The original 300 - 400 nm discharge lamps have been replaced with more powerful and monochromatic excimer lasers, operating at user-selectable Ultra-Violet (UV) wavelengths from 157 - 351 nm. The success of UV lithography is due, in part, to the development of industrialized, line narrowed excimer lasers. However, the line narrowing process, along with the intrinsic coherence properties of the laser, results in a source with a considerable amount of spatial coherence. Though the motivation for developing Ambient Assisted Living (AAL) systems is incontestable, significant challenges exist in realizing the ambience that is essential to the success of such systems. By definition, an AAL system must be omnipresent, tracking occupant activities in the home and identifying those situations where assistance is needed or would be welcomed. Embedded sensors offer an attractive mechanism for realizing ambience as their form factor and harnessing of wireless technologies aid in their seamless integration into pre-existing environments. Abstract:
Statistics show that a disproportionate amount of road fatalities occur at night-time despite the greatly reduced volume of traffic on roads. This thesis describes a system aimed at addressing this issue by automatically detecting the two main categories of road users: other road vehicles and pedestrians. A vehicle detection system using a visible spectrum camera and a pedestrian detection system using an infrared camera are presented, followed by a fusion of these systems. An image processing system to detect and track vehicles using their lamps is presented. As the appearance of vehicle lamps in video can vary depending on camera hardware, a camera configuration process is implemented. To identify red tail- and brake-lamps, parameters for a red colour threshold are derived from automotive regulations. In recent years, surface modification using advanced heat source like laser has been replacing the conventional methods to produce amorphous microstructure via rapid solidification. Due to the benefits of laser to enhance the tribological and mechanical properties of materials’ surface, several laser surface processing were developed including laser surface modification, namely laser alloying, transformation hardening, surface amorphization, shock hardening and glazing. In high temperature applications, the laser surface modification technique is beneficial to prolong the die life cycle, and also to improve the surface roughness of thermal barrier coatings (TBC). To produce the amorphous layer at a particular depth, laser parameter such as irradiance, frequency, and exposure time are controlled. Modelling is recognised as an essential activity in the architectural design of software systems. Model-driven architecture (MDA) is a framework implementing this idea. Ontologies are knowledge representation frameworks that are ideally suited to support modelling in this endeavour. We propose here a layered ontological framework that addresses domain modelling, architectural modelling, and interoperability aspects in the development of service-based software systems. We illustrate the benefits of ontological modelling and reasoning for service-oriented software architectures within the context of the Web Services.

Abstract:
This paper is concerned with the development of a model-order reduction (MOR) approach for the acceleration of a source-sweep analysis using the volume electric field integral equation (EFIE) formulation. In particular, we address the prohibitive computational burden associated with the repeated solution of the two-dimensional electromagnetic wave scattering problem for source-sweep analysis. The method described within is a variant of the Krylov subspace approach to MOR, that captures at an early stage of the iteration the essential features of the original system. As such these approaches are capable of creating very accurate low-order models. Numerical examples are provided that demonstrate the speed-up achieved by utilising these MOR approaches when compared against a method of moments (MoM) solution accelerated by use of the Fast Fourier Transform (FFT).

This report summarizes the key findings from a workshop at the 10th International Conference on Agile Processes and eXtreme Programming in Software Engineering (XP2009) called “Agile Research – A 7-Year Retrospective”, held in Sardinia in May 2009. The workshop was based on an open discussion around past papers presented at the conference, identifying current gaps and areas for future research. A research topic map has been drawn and several future research directions have been highlighted as the results of running the workshop.

This paper reports on the design and the manufacturing of an integrated DCDC converter, which respects the specificity of sensor node network: compactness, high efficiency in acquisition and transmission modes, and compatibility with miniature Lithium batteries. A novel integrated circuit (ASIC) has been designed and manufactured to provide regulated Voltage to the sensor node from miniaturized, thin film Lithium batteries. Then, a 3D integration technique has been used to integrate this ASIC in a 3 layers stack with high efficiency passives components, mixing the wafer level technologies from two different research institutions. <p>In this paper a technical review of the integration of a Unified Power Quality Conditioner (UPQC) in a distributed generation network is presented. Although the primary task of UPQC is to minimize grid voltage and load current disturbances along with reactive and harmonic power compensation, additional functionalities such as compensation of voltage interruption and active power transfer to the load and grid have also been identified. Connection methodologies with their advantages and disadvantages are also described. Recent improvements in capacity expansion techniques and future trends for the application of UPQC in distributed modes are also identified.</p>

Service provision for mobile users poses several challenges for those managing enterprise information systems. Some of these are ubiquitous, for example, privacy and security. Others give rise to integration and interoperability issues. The agent paradigm, though offering potential in fixed networked scenarios, has not been seriously considered as a mechanism for incorporating mobile clients, primarily to their computational intractability on mobile devices. However, recent developments in agent and mobile computing technologies – both from a hardware and software perspective, have rendered the mobile phone a viable platform for agents. One implication of this is that agents now offer a viable platform for service delivery to mobile users. The derivation of products from a software product line is a time-consuming and expensive activity. Despite recognition that an effective process could alleviate many of the difficulties associated with product derivation, existing approaches have different scope, emphasize different aspects of the derivation process and are frequently too specialized to serve as a general solution. In response to a need for methodological support, we developed Pro-PD (Process model for Product Derivation). Pro-PD was iteratively developed and evaluated through four research stages involving academic and industrial sources. This paper illustrates how Pro-PD provides systematic support by using product derivation preparation as an example.

Abstract:
The development of a novel label-free graphene sensor array is presented. Detection is based on modification of graphene FET devices and specifically monitoring the change in composition of the nutritive components in culturing medium. Micro-dispensing of Escherichia coli in medium shows feasibility of accurate positioning over each sensor while still allowing cell proliferation. Graphene FET device fabrication, sample dosing, and initial electrical characterisation have been completed and show a promising approach to reducing the sample size and lead time for diagnostic and drug development protocols through a label-free and reusable sensor array fabricated with standard and scalable microfabrication technologies.

A comparison study was carried out between a wireless sensor node with a bare die flip-chip mounted and its reference board with a BGA packaged transceiver chip. The main focus is the return loss (S parameter S11) at the antenna connector, which was highly depended on the impedance mismatch. Modeling including the different interconnect technologies, substrate properties and passive components, was performed to simulate the system in Ansoft Designer software. Statistical methods, such as the use of standard derivation and regression, were applied to the RF performance analysis, to see the impacts of the different parameters on the return loss. Abstract:
With the release of the latest European Medical Device Directive (MDD) standalone software can now be classified as an active medical device. Consequently the methods used to ensure device safety and reliability needs to be reviewed. IEC 62304 is the current software development lifecycle framework followed by medical device software developers but important processes are beyond the scope of IEC 62304. These processes are covered by additional standards. However since the MDD became mandatory these additional standards are not comprehensive enough to ensure the reliability of an active medical device consisting of only software. By employing software process improvement techniques this software can be developed and validated to ensure it performs the required task in a safe and reliable way.

Abstract:
Requirements evolution is a main driver for systems evolution. Traditionally, requirements evolution is associated to changes in the users’ needs and environments. In this paper, we explore another cause for requirements evolu- tion: assumptions. Requirements engineers often make assumptions stating, for example, that satisfying certain sub-requirements and/or correctly executing cer- tain system functionalities would lead to reach a certain requirement. However, assumptions might be, or eventually become, invalid. We outline an approach to monitor, at runtime, the assumptions in a requirements model and to evolve the model to reflect the validity level of such assumptions. Abstract:
Software developers are often interested in particular changes in programs that are relevant to their current tasks: not all changes to evolving software are equally important. However, most existing differencing tools, such as diff, notify developers of more changes than they wish to see. In this paper, we propose a technique to specify and automatically detect only those changes in programs deemed meaningful, or relevant, to a particular development task. Using four elementary annotations on the grammar of any programming language, namely Ignore, Order, Prefer and Scope, developers can specify, with limited effort, the type of change they wish to detect. Our algorithms use these annotations to transform the input programs into a normalised form, and to remove clones across different normalised programs in order to detect non-trivial and relevant differences. Abstract:
When software systems are verified against security requirements, formal and informal arguments provide a structure for organizing the software artifacts. Our recent work on the evolution of security-critical software systems demonstrates that our argumentation technique is useful in limiting the scope of change and in identifying changes to security properties. In support of this work, we have developed OpenArgue, a tool for syntax checking, visualizing, formalizing, and reasoning about incremental arguments. OpenArgue has been integrated with requirements engineering tools for Problem Frames and i*, and applied to an Air Traffic Management (ATM) case study.
