Spectroscopic and Microscopic Characterisation of Liquid Phase Exfoliated 2D Materials

Spectroscopic and Microscopic Characterisation of Liquid Phase Exfoliated 2D Materials
(2021)
Griffin, Aideen
Abstract:
Since the experimental isolation of graphene nearly two decades ago, the research into two-dimensional materials has accelerated at a tremendous rate across a vast range of scientific and engineering fields. Liquid phase exfoliation, a common production method, has progressed in recent years with studies reported on a variety of materials including graphene, transition metal dichalcogenides and layered double hydroxides. While the collection of liquid exfoliated crystals is substantial and growing year on year, the spectroscopy of hexagonal-boron nitride (h-BN) nanosheets, a widely used insulator, and the effect of stabilizers on the exfoliation process have yet to be explored in detail. Spectroscopy of two dimensional h-BN, unlike many other nanomaterials, contains relatively little information due to the fact that both the absorption and Raman spectra consist of only one feature each. By size-selecting liquid exfoliated h-BN nanosheets the dependence of h-BN optical spectra on nan...

Dealing with latency effects in travel time prediction on motorways
(2020)
O'Mahony, Margaret
Abstract:
Real-time traffic information is now a crucial part of operating a road network. The quality, accuracy and reliability of such information is critical to the road operators and users. Real-time travel time prediction methods using Automatic Number Plate Recognition cameras or Bluetooth/Wi-Fi readers that use matching algorithms to generate travel times in real-time can be vulnerable to an inherent latency issue. Measured travel times are based on vehicles that have already completed the journey and may not be representative for users about to commence that same journey. The aim of this research was to identify the latency in travel time prediction, quantify its effect, and develop a model to remove it. Datasets for the M50 motorway in Dublin, Ireland, were used to conduct the analysis. The results show that real-time travel times can be more accurately predicted when combined with historical travel time information. The approach was found to be valid and achievable and the developed...

Low-complexity search method for CFO estimation in GFDM
(2019)
Shayanfar, Hamidreza; Saeedi-Sourck, Hamid; Farhang, Arman
Abstract:
In this Letter, the authors propose a low-complexity search method for carrier frequency offset (CFO) estimation in generalised frequency division multiplexing (GFDM). The proposed technique does not have any limitations on CFO acquisition range while providing an accurate estimate. Compared with the existing solutions in the literature with the lowest complexity, the proposed technique brings at least an order of magnitude complexity reduction without any performance penalty. Finally, the numerical results and comparisons with the existing literature in terms of performance and complexity attest the efficacy of the proposed method.

Design and manufacture of a precast PCM enhanced concrete cladding panel for full scale performance monitoring
(2021)
Niall, Dervilla; Kinnane, Oliver; West, Roger
Abstract:
Civil Engineering Research in Ireland 2018 (CERI 2018), Dublin, Ireland, 29-30 August 2018
The overall aim of this study is to develop innovative precast cladding panels for the renovation of Europe’s existing building stock thereby improving their energy performance. Using the mass of a building to store heat and/or cold can reduce the demand on the auxiliary heating and/or cooling systems and hence reduce the overall energy demand of the building. Previous laboratory research has shown that the incorporation of phase change materials (PCMs) into concrete enhances its thermal storage capacity by up to 50%. However in a real application where a PCM-concrete composite material is used in a building to store thermal energy, the effectiveness of the PCM depends on many variables including the form of construction and local climate conditions. In this research study a precast cladding panel formed with PCM enhanced concrete has been developed and manufactured. In order to observe th...

Operational and embodied energy analysis of 8 single-occupant dwellings retrofit to nZEB standard

Abstract:
The 2020 Civil Engineering Research in Ireland conference (CERI 2020), Cork Institute of Technology, Cork (held online due to coronavirus outbreak), 27-28 August 2020
In line with the Energy Performance of Buildings Directive, Irish dwellings are being retrofit to near Zero Energy Building (nZEB) standards - with a number of the deep energy retrofits classified as A-rated. As a result of the low operational energy, the embodied energy share of an nZEB's life cycle energy is significantly increased. Therefore, to obtain a holistic picture of the change in energy profile of buildings, the embodied energy of the material added to achieve that low performance should also be taken into account. This paper presents results from a case study of 8 single-occupant terrace bungalows retrofit to nZEB standard. The pre- and post-retrofit operational performance is first estimated using the Irish Dwelling Energy Assessment Procedure (DEAP). The post-retrofit operational performance of t...

An optical investigation into post compression aerodynamics in a dual opposed piston rapid compression machine

An optical investigation into post compression aerodynamics in a dual opposed piston rapid compression machine
(2021)
Meier, Patrick
Abstract:
Experimental chemical kineticists use rapid compression machines (RCMs) to verify models of global reactivity of fuels in as an ideal environment as possible, similar to those experienced in internal combustion engines. An RCM compresses a fuel mixture to an elevated temperature and pressure in less than 20 ms and maintains this high energy state until the onset of ignition. The time from the end of compression to the rapid rise in pressure due to ignition is defined as the ignition delay time (IDT) and is measured using dynamic pressure sensors located in the chamber wall. This phenomenon is characteristic of a given fuel at a given condition and is usually plotted as a function of compressed temperature. Due to the difficulties in performing direct, real time temperature measurements, including the “facility effect” of heat loss from the compressing gases to the chamber wall, the “adiabatic core principle” is used to estimate the temperature of the compressed gases at the end of c...

Microbial processes mediating Priming Effects and the coupling of C and N cycling in soil

Microbial processes mediating Priming Effects and the coupling of C and N cycling in soil
(2021)
Waibel, Matthias
Abstract:
Soil is fundamental to agricultural productivity and sustainability. Soil organic matter (SOM) is important as a “revolving nutrient fund”, which determines plant nutrient availability. Microbes are key determinants of SOM turnover and of SOM dynamics. Their activities are influenced by organic inputs from plants (Priming Effects). Understanding these interactions has the potential to reduce external N input by better predicting the soil N supply. However, which microbes are involved in primed SOM mineralization is unknown. Analytical methods utilised to investigate this were 13C isotope ratio source partitioning for quantifying C mineralised fluxes, 16S rDNA and 16S rRNA sequencing to determine growing and potentially active taxa, and metaproteomics of contrasting soil extracts for illuminating proteins involved in SOM decomposition. A sample-specific soil interference correction was developed for quantification of protein and humic substances content in contrasting soil extracts. ...
