Past, present and future of medical education in Ireland
(2020)
Bergin, Colm; Horgan, Mary
Abstract:
Medical education and training has evolved over the centuries. Ireland has a long history of leading on aspects of training that remain relevant today, focussing on the apprenticeship model coupled with a robust modern medical education framework. The practice of medicine is changing rapidly driven by expanding knowledge, advances in technology and use of artificial intelligence, demographic shifts and the expectations of patients and society. Medical training and education need to adapt to ensure that our current knowledge and future medical workforce is prepared for modern-day patient-centric practice. Ireland has emerged as a world leader in medical device technology, pharmaceutical research and development and social media technology support which offer the opportunity for the future of medical training. Knowledge, emotional intelligence, critical thinking, compassion, resilience and leadership are key attributes to which we as a profession aspire. There is an opportunity to lev...

Emma Wolukau-Wanambwa: Disposable memories in Uganda
(2020)
Garrido Castellano, Carlos
Abstract:
This article explores the capacity of visual arts to deal with transnational, multidirectional processes of remembering and spatial redefinition. Through analyzing two sets of work by Emma Wolokau-Wanambwa that address the tradition of formal art training at Makerere University and the aftermaths of the Second World War in Africa, respectively, the article touches on issues of art education, the production of historical meaning, and the role of cultural institutions in Uganda. It also examines the complex entanglement between colonial legacies and postcolonial and neoliberal systems of value, revealing the value of artistic research to reveal subversive alternatives to those articulations.

Ebola Lessons for a Global Village: I am my brothers’ (and sisters’) keeper
(2020)
Houghton, Frank; Houghton, Sharon
Abstract:
The ongoing Ebola outbreak is estimated to have resulted in over 8,300 deaths, and is the largest such outbreak in recorded history. Although largely confined, this time, to West Africa the ramifications of the disease have been global. Widespread transmission of the disease was evident in Guinea, Liberia, Sierra Leone, with additional cases also noted in Mali, Nigeria, Senegal, Spain, the UK and the USA.

A Contextual Application of The Unicity and Universality of Christ in the Context of Religious Pluralism: A Lubacian Hermeneutic.
(2020)
Kangka, Paul
Abstract:
This thesis will argue that when it comes to the important question of the relationship between the church and those who are not part of it, de Lubac’s response to the question is novel. His writings on the social dimension of dogma are the key to opening up a dialogue with non-Christian religions. The social dimension of dogma de Lubac saw rooted in mystery, highlighting the unique Christian contribution to the right understanding of history and community. We will explore the theological implication of de Lubac’s view that humanity cannot be fully understood apart from Christ. Also, we will make a critical examination of de Lubac’s arguments of how he believes people outside the Judeo-Christian tradition can attain salvation throughthe Church. The thesis will critically examine the different writings ofde Lubac on how he views other faiths and people who do not profess any religion. We will show how de Lubac’s method can serve as a mirror for gauging su...

Exploring circulation: '?e proporcions' in a fifteenth-century English miscellany and the vernacularisation of musica speculativa
(2021)
CALLAGHAN, LYNSEY HANNAH
Abstract:
If no copies had survived of ??e proporcions?, the assumption might have been that the audience for Boethian music theory in fifteenth-century England was scholarly, clerical, and Latinate. The discovery of a third copy of this Middle English translation of a Latin proportion treatise, in a miscellaneous collection of writings in Dublin, Trinity College MS 516, expands our understanding of the reach of Boethius' De institutione musica. Trinity MS 516 originally belonged to John Benet, vicar of Harlington in Bedfordshire, England. By examining the newly discovered version of the treatise in Benet's miscellany alongside the copies in London, British Library, Lansdowne MS 763 and in New York, Pierpont Morgan, MS B.12, a picture starts to emerge of music theory readers outside of elite institutions of learning, with variable kinds of literacy. This study provides the first comparative analysis of all three versions of ??e proporcions? and an assessment of its circulation. As t...

Participant characteristics are poorly reported in exercise trials in tendinopathy: A systematic review
(2021)
Mc Auliffe, Sean; Korakakis, Vasileios; Hilfiker, Roger; Whiteley, Rodney; O'Sullivan, Kieran
Abstract:
Objective: To evaluate the reporting of eligibility criteria and baseline participant characteristics in randomised controlled trials investigating the effects of exercise interventions in tendinopathy. Methods: Randomised controlled trials investigating the effects of exercise therapy compared to a nonexercising intervention in upper and lower limb tendinopathy were included. Data extraction was categorised into the following domains: participant demographics, tendinopathy descriptors, general health, participant recruitment and eligibility criteria. Results: The review included the following tendinopathies: Achilles (n ¼ 9), gluteal (n ¼ 2), lateral elbow tendinopathy (n ¼ 15), patellar (n ¼ 3) plantar (n ¼ 3), and rotator cuff (n ¼ 13). Age, sex, duration of symptoms and symptom severity were commonly reported across the review, while prior history of tendinopathy was poorly reported (6/45). Variables such as physical activity level (17/45), sleep (0/45), psychological factors ...

Developing a world view through a diversity of voices: A Reflection
(2020)
Rinehart, David
Abstract:
The poems in this book give us the unique opportunity to explore the thoughts and imagination of people from a diversity of backgrounds and experiences. Some were born and raised in Ireland; some have come to live in Ireland from different countries including Nigeria, America, and Cyprus, while others currently live in other countries around the world. Many of the poets share a common sentiment of how tired, distressed and enraged they are by the vast array of social problems smattered across our globe. These voices resonated with me, reminding me of stories I heard in the United States, my home country. The global North and the global South share an unjust and lopsided history, yet we, those of us reading this book, those of us who are activists, those of us who are poets and writers and academics, we are coming together to demand justice, equality, and to save our planet.

“In a sea of wonders:” Eastern Europe and Transylvania in the Irish-language translation of Dracula
(2020)
De Brún, Sorcha
Abstract:
The publication of the Irish-language translation of Dracula in 1933 by Seán Ó Cuirrín was a landmark moment in the history of Irishlanguage letters. This article takes as its starting point the idea that language is a central theme in Dracula. However, the representation of Transylvania in the translation marked a departure from Bram Stoker’s original. A masterful translation, one of its most salient features is Ó Cuirrín’s complex use of the Irish language, particularly in relation to Eastern European language, character, and landscapes. The article examines Ó Cuirrín’s prose and will explore how his approaches to concrete and abstract elements of the novel affect plot, character, and narration. The first section explores how Dracula is treated by Ó Cuirrín in the Irish translation and how this impacts the Count’s persona and his identity as Transylvanian. Through Ó Cuirrín’s use of idiom, alliteration, and proverb, it will be shown how Dracula’s character is reimagined, creating ...

Irishmen in the British Service during the French Revolutionary Wars, 1793-1802
(2013)
McDonnell, Ciarán
Abstract:
The French Revolutionary wars had their origins in changing political and social attitudes during the eighteenth century. The Age of Enlightenment, with its ideas of citizenship, human rights and republicanism, inspired reformers to adopt radical approaches to politics and this in turn gave rise to the Age of Revolution. The notion of the common people challenging the authority of absolute monarchy became reality, the most prominent example being the French Revolution. Other European nations, fearing a spread of French power and revolutionary ideals, declared war on France, thus beginning a period of warfare that would last for over twenty years. Revolutionary France declared war on Great Britain in February 1793, drawing Britain into a conflict that marked a major turning point in military history.

Impaired orthostatic heart rate recovery is associated with smaller thalamic volume: Results from The Irish Longitudinal Study on Aging (TILDA)
(2020)

Abstract:
The thalamus is a central hub of the autonomic network and thalamic volume has been associated with high?risk phenotypes for sudden cardiac death. Heart rate response to physiological stressors (e.g., standing) and the associated recovery patterns provide reliable indicators of both autonomic function and cardiovascular risk. Here we examine if thalamic volume may be a risk marker for impaired heart rate recovery in response to orthostatic challenge. The Irish Longitudinal Study on Aging involves a nationally representative sample of older individuals aged ?50?years. Multimodal brain magnetic resonance imaging and orthostatic heart rate recovery were available for a cross?sectional sample of 430 participants. Multivariable regression and linear mixed?effects models were adjusted for head size, age, sex, education, body mass index, blood pressure, history of cardiovascular diseases and events, cardiovascular medication, diabetes mellitus, smoking, alcohol intake, timed up?and?go (a m...

Abstract:
Known as al-na?da al-?arabiyya (the Arab renaissance), the period between the last quarter of the nineteenth century and the eve of the First World War was characterized by momentous economic and socio-political changes in Arab regions, including reforms in urbanization, industrialization, commercialization, and the growing popularity of ideas about nationhood. [?] Although the regional significance of the Arab press during the late 1800s is well recognized, the press?s earlier history was also a transformative moment in book production, one where nascent printing practices interfaced with centuries-old scribal ones.1
