Breastfeeding in Ireland. A five-year strategic action plan - National Committee on Breastfeeding 2005
(2005)
Department of Health (Ireland)
Abstract:
The protection, promotion and support of breastfeeding has been identified in many national policy documents as a major public health issue. Breastfeeding offers mothers and babies significant health advantages both in the short term and throughout their lives. From a health policy point of view, it is generally agreed that the better health afforded by breastfeeding can result in major savings in the provision of health care. Studies have also shown that breastfeeding has a positive effect on the wider economy with fewer days being lost by employed parents of breastfed babies to illness. Although progress is being made in promoting and supporting this health enhancing, environmentally friendly and low-cost feeding option, breastfeeding rates in Ireland continue to be among the lowest in Europe. This Strategic Action Plan has been developed by a Ministerial appointed, multi-disciplinary National Committee on Breastfeeding, in consultation with relevant stakeholders, to further promot...

A Framework for Quality in Long-Term Residential Care for Older People in Ireland
(2000)
Department of Health (Ireland)
Abstract:
The National Council on Ageing and Older People has long been concerned about the quality of long-term residential care for older people in Ireland. In 1986, its predecessor, the National Council for the Aged published “It’s Our Home”. The Quality of Life in Private and Voluntary Nursing Homes. In 1999 the Council commissioned a postal survey of all long-term residential care facilities in the country to determine whether facilities had quality initiatives in operation; providers’ views and aspirations for future provision of long-term care; providers’ views on the introduction of a national quality monitoring policy Download the Report here

Planning for Dementia Care in Ireland: Conference Proceedings
(2000)
Department of Health (Ireland)
Abstract:
The Conference, which took place on 4th June 1999 in the Royal Marine Hotel, Dun Laoghaire, marked the publication of the Councilâ?Ts latest report â?" An Action Plan for Dementia. The Action Plan takes as its guiding principle the recognition of the individuality of the person with dementia and of his or her needs. It outlines an approach to developing available, accessible and high quality services in the context of existing resources and public expenditure constraints. Its aim is to describe a best practice model of dementia care in Ireland â?" a model which may inform and guide policy makers and others involved in planning service provision, and which may give support and assistance to those who endeavour to provide flexible services at the local level. Care and Case Management for Older People in Ireland
(2001)
Department of Health (Ireland)
Abstract:
This study provides, for the first time, a systematic review of how health and social services are currently being delivered to older people with the purpose of identifying models of best practice within a Care Management framework. The research allows the voices of a wide range of health and social service providers to comment individually about how care is currently delivered in Ireland. In addition, the research provides them with an opportunity to express how they feel about Care and Case Management as a model for the planning, co-ordination and delivery of services and its feasibility in an Irish context Download the Report here

Report on the Regulation of Practitioners of Complementary and Alternative Medicine in Ireland
(2002)
Department of Health (Ireland)
Abstract:
This report has been written in the context of this interest and in response to a request from the Department of Health and Children. It follows a Forum on regulatory issues that was held at the IPA in June 2001 and attended by many CAM practitioners. The Minister for Health and Children asked the Institute to build on the discussions at the Forum by preparing a report on possible options in the regulation of CAM practitioners in Ireland. The focus of the report is on regulatory and policy issues in general. It is not within the Instituteâ?Ts competence or brief to comment on more specific clinical or technical issues. Immunisation Guidelines for Ireland
(2002)
Department of Health (Ireland)
Abstract:
This revised report on immunisation guidelines for Ireland has been prepared with the assistance of an active committee from associated disciplines in Paediatrics, Infectious Diseases, General Practice and Public Health. The report itself is designed to be simple and concise and of course does not claim to contain all information on any pharmacological material. It does, however, give the current information and guidelines concerning immunisation. Vaccines are continually evolving and guidelines will obviously change given the nature of these developments. This is a tribute to the pharmaceutical industry who invest so much money in research and development in this particular field. Download document here

Biological threats: A Health Response for Ireland

Biological threats: A Health Response for Ireland
(2002)
Department of Health (Ireland)
Abstract:
In the light of recent worldwide events it is clear that there is a need in this and every country for preparedness for dealing with people who have been exposed to or infected with agents associated with bioterrorism. It seems unlikely that a country such as Ireland would be the target of a primary bioterrorist attack. It is more likely that those who have been covertly exposed to bioterrorist agents abroad could enter this country before they develop signs of illness and could have their illness diagnosed in this country. Due to the high infectivity of many of the diseases associated with these bioterrorist agents it is necessary to have protocols in place to deal with all contingencies. Download document here
