The effect of the VOF-CSF static contact angle boundary condition on the dynamics of sliding and bouncing elliposidal bubbles.
(2011)
MURRAY, DARINA BRIDGET
Abstract:
The staticcontactangle is the only empiricism introduced in a Volume of Fluid–Continuum Surface Force (VOF–CSF) model of bubbly flow. Although it has previously been shown to have a relatively limited effect on the accuracy of velocity and shape predictions in the case of large gas bubblessliding under inclined walls (e.g. Cook and Behnia, 2001), it may have a more determining influence on the numerical prediction of the dynamics of smaller ellipsoidalbubbles which were shown by Tsao and Koch (1997) to bounce repeatedly when sliding under inclined walls at certain wall inclinations. The present paper reports on the influence of surface tension and the staticcontactangle on the dynamics of an ellipsoidal air bubble of equivalent diameter De = 3.4 mm. The bubble Eötvös and Morton numbers are Eo = 1.56 and Mo = 2 × 10−11 respectively. The computational results are achieved with a Piecewise Linear Construction (PLIC) of the interface and are reviewed with reference to experimental measu...

A general correlation for the stagnation point Nusselt number of an axisymmetric impinging synthetic jet
(2011)
MURRAY, DARINA BRIDGET; PERSOONS, TIM
Abstract:
Whereas the heat transfer mechanisms in steady impinging jets are well understood, the available knowledge of heat transfer to impinging synthetic jets remains inconsistent. This paper provides an objective comparison of the stagnation point heat transfer performance of axisymmetric impinging synthetic jets versus established steady jet correlations. Furthermore, a general correlation for the stagnation point Nusselt number is proposed including the effect of all appropriate scaling parameters: Reynolds number (500 ≤ Re ≤ 1500), jet‐to‐surface spacing (2 ≤ H/D ≤ 16) and stroke length (2 ≤ L0/D ≤ 40). Based on the ratio of stroke length to jet‐to‐surface spacing L0/H, four heat transfer regimes are identified.

High-resolution hot-film measurement of surface heat flux to an impinging jet
(2011)
MURRAY, DARINA BRIDGET; PERSOONS, TIM
Abstract:
To investigate the complex coupling between surface heat transfer and local fluid velocity in convective heat transfer, advanced techniques are required to measure the surface heat flux at high spatial and temporal resolution. Several established flow velocity techniques such as laser Doppler anemometry, particle image velocimetry and hot wire anemometry can measure fluid velocities at high spatial resolution (µm) and have a high-frequency response (up to 100 kHz) characteristic. Equivalent advanced surface heat transfer measurement techniques, however, are not available; even the latest advances in high speed thermal imaging do not offer equivalent data capture rates. The current research presents a method of measuring point surface heat flux with a hot film that is flush mounted on a heated flat surface. The film works in conjunction with a constant temperature anemometer which has a bandwidth of 100 kHz. The bandwidth of this technique therefore is likely to be in excess of more ...

Natural Convection heat transfer and fluid dynamics for a pair of vertically aligned isothermal horizontal cylinders.
(2011)
MURRAY, DARINA BRIDGET; PERSOONS, TIM
Abstract:
This paper discusses the close interaction between local fluid dynamics and natural convection heat transfer from a pair of isothermally heated horizontal cylinders submerged in water. The presence of a second heated cylinder induces heat transfer enhancements of up to 10%, and strong fluctuations in local heat transfer rate. Therefore specific attention is focused on how the local heat transfer characteristics of the upper cylinder are affected by buoyancy induced fluid flow from the lower cylinder. The paper investigates a range of Rayleigh number between 1.8 × 106 and 5.5 × 106, and a vertical cylinder spacing between 2D and 4D. Simultaneous local heat flux measurements and flow velocity measurements using particle image velocimetry reveal oscillatory behaviour of the thermal plume, depending on operating conditions. A joint temporal analysis of the data has provided new insights into the governing mechanisms, which enables further optimisation of the heat transfer performance.

Heat Transfer Enhancement from Bouncing Bubble Dynamics
(2011)
MURRAY, DARINA BRIDGET; ROBINSON, ANTHONY
Abstract:
Heat transfer enhancement resulting from the effects of two phase flow can play an important role in for convective cooling. Currently, the effect of bubble/surface interactions has received very little attention. To address this, this paper investigates the effect of a single bubble bouncing on a heated surface. Local heat transfer measurements have been performed for two bubble release heights of 15 and 25 mm, along with two levels of surface heat flux, 5800 W/m2 and 9040 W/m2. High-speed photography and infrared thermography have been employed to investigate the path of the bubble and the resulting heat transfer effect when an interaction between the bubble and the heated surface takes place.

Development of a Prototype Knowledge Discovery Portal for Energy Informatics
(2011)
Costello, Gabriel J.; Clarke, Ray; Donnellan, Brian; Lohan, John
Abstract:
This paper describes the development of a prototype knowledge dis-covery portal (KDP) for energy informatics. The research domain is Ireland which is increasingly challenged to achieve energy efficiency targets and to implement renewable energy systems (RES). The reasons for undertaken this research is to provide a mechanism to disseminate information on energy efficiency and renew-able energy technologies to a number of sectors: community, educational, indus-trial and research. The prototype KDP was developed using design-science meth-odology. The work integrates information both in the horizontal and vertical axes. In the horizontal plane it provides information to community users, educational bodies and industrial companies. In the vertical plane it allows deeper access de-pending on the requirements of the user: from technological overviews to detailed data from the energy system (solar collectors, heat pump and wind turbine). Future work will involve further development of the ...

Abstract:
The endogenous cannabinoid (endocannabinoid) system plays an important role in fear-conditioned analgesia (FCA) and expression and extinction of conditioned fear. The hippocampus has an established role in both pain and conditioned fear and is a substrate for endocannabinoid activity. This study aimed to investigate the role of the endocannabinoid system in the ventral hippocampus (vHip) in FCA and in fear responding in the presence of nociceptive tone. Fear-conditioned rats displayed significantly increased freezing and 22-kHz ultrasonic vocalisation and a reduction in formalin-evoked nociceptive behaviour (ie, FCA) upon re-exposure to a context previously paired with footshock. Tissue levels of the endocannabinoids, anandamide, and 2-arachidonoylglycerol, as well as the fatty acid amide, palmitoylethanolamide, were significantly higher in the vHip of fear-conditioned rats compared with non-fear-conditioned controls. URB597 (inhibitor of fatty acid amide hydrolase [FAAH]), administ...

Molecular and electrophysiological changes in the prefrontal cortex-amygdala-dorsal periaqueductal grey pathway during persistent pain state and fear-conditioned analgesia
(2011)
Butler, Ryan K.; Finn, David P.
Abstract:
Fear-conditioned analgesia (FCA) is the reduction in pain responding which is expressed upon re-exposure to a context previously paired with an aversive stimulus. Projections along the prefrontal cortex (PFC)¿amygdala¿dorsal periaqueductal grey (dPAG) pathway may mediate FCA. However, there is a paucity of studies measuring both molecular and electrophysiological changes in this pathway in rats expressing persistent pain-related behaviour or FCA. Male Lister-hooded rats, with stimulating and recording electrodes implanted in the amygdala and dPAG, respectively, either received or did not receive footshock (0.4 mA) paired with context, followed 23.5 h later by an intraplantar injection of saline or formalin (50 ¿L, 2.5%) into the right hindpaw. Thirty minutes post-formalin/saline, rats were re-exposed to the context for 15 min, during which pain-related behaviours were assessed in addition to evoked field potential recordings in the amygdala¿dPAG pathway. Immediately after the 15-min...

The endocannabinoid system in the rat dorsolateral periaqueductal grey mediates fear-conditioned analgesia and controls fear expression in the presence of nocicpetive tone
(2011)

Abstract:
Background and purpose: Endocannabinoids in the midbrain periaqueductal grey (PAG) are involved in modulating nociception and unconditioned stress-induced analgesia, however, their role in fear-conditioned analgesia (FCA) has not been examined. The present study examined the role of the endocannabinoid system in the dorsolateral (dl) PAG in formalin-evoked nociceptive behaviour, conditioned fear and FCA in rats. Experimental approach: Rats received intra-dlPAG administration of the CB1 receptor antagonist/inverse agonist rimonabant, or vehicle, prior to re-exposure to a context paired 24hrs previously with footshock. Formalin-evoked nociceptive behaviour and fear-related behaviours (freezing and 22kHz ultrasonic vocalisation) were assessed. In a separate cohort, alterations in levels of endocannabinoids (2-arachidonoyl glycerol [2-AG] and N-arachidonoyl ethanolamide [anandamide; AEA]) and the related N-acylethanolamines (NAEs) (N-palmitoyl ethanolamide [PEA] and N-oleoyl ethanolami...

Abstract:
The endocannabinoid system is an important regulator of the nervous, neuroendocrine, and immune systems, thus representing a novel therapeutic target for stress-related neuroinflammatory and psychiatric disorders. However, there is a paucity of data relating to the effects of endocannabinoids on neuroinflammatory mediators following an immune stress/challenge in vivo. This study investigated the effects of URB597, a selective inhibitor of fatty acid amide hydrolyase (FAAH), the enzyme that preferentially metabolizes anandamide, on lipopolysaccharide (LPS)-induced increases in the expression of immune mediators in the hypothalamus. Systemic administration of URB597 increased the levels of anandamide and the related N-acylethanolamines, N-palmitoylethanolamide, and N-oleoylethanolamide, but not 2-arachidonoyl glycerol, in the hypothalamus and spleen. URB597 attenuated the LPS-induced increase in interleukin (IL)-1 expression while concurrently augmenting the LPS-induced increase in su...

The influence of domestic and international interest rates on the ISEQ
(2003)
Bredin, Don; Gavin, Caroline; O'Reilly, Gerard
Abstract:
We investigate the influence of international and domestic monetary policy shocks on the Irish stock market. Specifically, we analyse the impact of (un)expected changes in domestic, US, UK and German/euro area policy rates on the ISEQ between 1988 to 2002 in an event type study. Our decomposition of (un)expected changes in policy rates are based on futures markets and is akin to Kuttner (2001). In the absence of an Irish interest rate futures market, we use a more indirect method by appealing to the expectations theory of the term structure of interest rates. Overall, our results suggest that, with the exception of the US, unanticipated changes in domestic and international interest rates appear to have little significant influence on the Irish stock market.

Estimating the Yield of Micro Wind Turbines in an Urban Environment: A Methodology

Abstract:
<p><strong>Micro wind turbines currently have the majority share of micro (electricity) generation installations in Ireland. These technologies are being installed predominantly in rural environments, and current applications to the <em>Distribution Services Operator</em> (DSO) for connection of all types of micro generator stand at less than 500. Poor market dissemination of information and research findings compounded with poor options for spill payment - as well as onerous planning restrictions do not –it appears - create a platform conducive to encouraging development in this market.</strong></p> <p><strong> This paper outlines the complexities associated with evaluating the wind resource within an urban environment and investigates the means to ‘estimate’ wind regimes in an urban environment based on an extrapolation of a reference wind speed from a rural environment into the urban area. Abstract:
Amendments with the potential to reduce phosphorus (P) losses from agricultural grassland arising from the land application of dairy-soiled water (DSW) were investigated. Optimal application rates were studied, and associated costs and feasibility were estimated. First, batch tests were carried out to identify appropriate chemicals or phosphorus sorbing materials to control P in runoff from DSW. Then, the best four treatments were examined in an agitator test. In this test, soil-placed in a beaker-was loaded with DSW or amended DSW at a rate equivalent to 5 mm ha-1 (the maximum permissible application rate of DSW allowable in a 42-day period in Ireland). The soil was overlain with continuously stirred water to simulate runoff on land-applied DSW. Optimum application rates were selected based on percentage removal of dissolved reactive phosphorus in overlying water and the estimated cost of amendment. The costs of the amendments, per cubic metre of DSW, increased in the order: bottom...

Abstract:
Appliance load monitoring systems are designed to disaggregate the power load of a building in order to estimate the nature of individual loads, providing a real-time fine-grained recognition of active appliances. Monitoring non-intrusively appliances’ contributions to a given load enables a wide range of applications, ranging from electricity bill decomposition to accurate electricity user profiling. This work demonstrates a real implementation of such appliance load monitoring system. An intuitive graphical user interface is proposed to drive the system setup for profiling appliances’ signatures and for visualising the monitoring output.

Modeling user and result reputation in collaborative web search

Abstract:
Employing collaborative recommendation techniques allows for personalization of search results in social web search. If recommendations arise from past user activity, the expertise of those users driving the recommendation process can play an important role when it comes to ensuring recommendation quality. Hence the reputation of users is important, in addition to result relevance as traditionally considered in web search. In this paper we explore this concept of reputation; specifically, investigating how reputation can enhance the recommendation engine at the core of the HeyStaks social search utility. We evaluate a number of different reputation models in the context of the HeyStaks system, and demonstrate how incorporating reputation into the recommendation process can enhance the relevance of results recommended by HeyStaks.

Abstract:
Since the creation of Twitter in 2008, micro-blogging services have received a lot of attention among users who wish to share news items, opinions and information with friends and colleagues. However, these services typically provide for only limited organisation of content, with the main ranking criterion being post time with perhaps some basic message filtering accommodated. Given the substantial and increasing volume of posts that micro-blogging services attract, there is a clear need to assist users when it comes to effectively consuming this content. In this regard, categorisation offers one approach to organise content by grouping related messages together. In this paper we present a study in the recommendation of categories for short-form messages in order to provide for better search and message filtering. In particular, we present an index-based approach where real-time web data can be used as a source of knowledge for category recommendation. Further, we evaluate our appro...

Using social ties in group recommendation
(2011)
Bourke, Steven; McCarthy, Kevin; Smyth, Barry
Abstract:
The social web is a mass of activity, petabytes of data are generated yearly. The social web has proven to be a great resource for new recommender system techniques and ideas. However it would appear that typically these techniques are not so social, as they only generate recommendations for a user acting alone. In this paper we take the social graph data and preference content (via Facebook) of 94 user study participants and generate social group recommendations for them and their friends. We evaluate how different aggregation policies perform in deciding the final group recommendation. Our findings show that in an offline evaluation an aggregation policy which takes into consideration social weighting outperforms other aggregation policies.

Abstract:
Robotics has developed, technologically, to a level where it becomes a field of both interest and importance to other disciplines, either as a proof-of-concept or demonstrative tool, or else as the main focus for implementation of theories. This is particularly evident in the areas of computational and theoretical cognitive science where, despite this progress, robotics remains sufficiently inaccessible to non-specialists as to dissuade its use. This is due in no small part to the issue of code re-usability across differing hardware platforms and the lack of low-level support for developing suitable drivers for the main robotics development tools. To address this issue, this work presents ACorDE: Autonomous Control Development Environment. This development environment takes in data pertaining to the robotic platform and generates suitable driver and behavioural code in a standardised format.

Abstract:
We are living in an age of information overload, where it can be difficult to define which information is relevant and important to the end user at a point in time. In this paper, we introduce a solution to apportioning this constant flow of information by going to the source of the content, namely the producers. This paper examines an application for searching for pertinent friends on the popular microblogging service, Twitter1 and our approach to curtail the cold start problem that new users of the service face. We introduce our search technology which is capable of finding the producers of wanted content and suggest connecting to them as followees on Twitter. We also prove the usefulness of this technology through the results of a live user experiment carried out on these cold start users.

Abstract:
In this paper we focus on a multi-case case-based reasoning system to support users during collaborative search tasks. In particular we describe how repositories of search experiences/knowledge can be recommended to users at search time. These recommendations are evaluated using real-world search data.

Abstract:
We present a web-based, multi-lingual, campus guidance system with emphasis on pedestrian navigation aimed at providing support for delegates attending International Conferences at the National University of Ireland Maynooth (NUIM) campus. A special campus guidance system could improve the logistics of the conference. Potentially such improvements could attract more delegates to the conference. The Cloudmade Web Map Lite API which uses OpenStreetMap has been used for creating this interface. The system generates shortest pedestrian paths using both outdoor pavements and indoor corridors between various buildings and points of interests (POI). For visual assistance in pedestrian navigation geotagged images are used along the path at certain points in the route, such as road intersections, when the user needs to get their orientation correct. The interface is available in both English and Chinese language.

An investigation into students' usage of an online homework wiki, its effect on language improvement and its benefit as a learning and teaching support for undergraduate German
(2012)

Abstract:
This investigation aimed to examine the effects of using an Online German Homework Wiki and other factors on undergraduate students’ language improvement at the Shannon College of Hotel Management (SCHM) in Ireland. The Online German Homework Wiki designed and implemented at SCHM in advance of this study. Students had the option of submitting homework online, where it was corrected by the lecturer using an elaborate coloured correction scheme, incorporating corrective feedback and comments of guidance and praise. The students and lecturer also had the ability to communicate online using comments. The Online German Homework Wiki also stored class handouts and class pages in which the lecturer documented all white-board work on vocabulary and discussion topics as they happened in class, thus contextualising vocabulary. Key to the learning process, however, was the feature of hyperlinking, which involved the teacher underlining errors and hyperlinking them to other pages explaining the...

Abstract:
Water management is an important part of monitoring the natural environment and includes monitoring water quality of both coastal and inland marine locations. This covers the detection of pollution and monitoring the development of harmful algal blooms as well as coastal features and wave patterns. For many years water managers relied on field measurements for coastal monitoring and water quality evaluation. This type of sampling is quite limited on both temporal and spatial scales and is ineffective for capturing dynamic marine events, essential for increased knowledge and better decision making. It also involves costly, time and labour-intensive on-site sampling and data collection. The introduction of new policies such as the EU Water Framework Directive has increased pressure on governments to adopt new methods for continuous monitoring of all water bodies. In recent years, the use of in-situ wireless sensor networks (WSNs) for marine environmental monitoring has been developin...

Mechanism of the binding of Z-L-tryptophan and Z-L-phenylalanine to thermolysin and stromelysin-1 in aqueous solutions

Abstract:
The chemical shift of the carboxylate carbon of Z-tryptophan is increased from 179.85 to 182.82 ppm and 182.87 on binding to thermolysin and stromelysin-1 respectively. The chemical shift of Z-phenylalanine is also increased from 179.5 ppm to 182.9 ppm on binding to thermolysin. From pH studies we conclude that the pKa of the inhibitor carboxylate group is lowered by at least 1.5 pKa units when it binds to either enzyme. The signal at ~183 ppm is no longer observed when the active site zinc atom of thermolysin or stromelysin-1 is replaced by cobalt. We estimate that the distance of carboxylate carbon of Z-[1-13C]-L-tryptophan is ≤ 3.71 Å from the active site cobalt atom of thermolysin. We conclude that the side chain of Z-[1-13C]-L-tryptophan is not bound in the S2' subsite of thermolysin. As the chemical shifts of the carboxylate carbons of the bound inhibitors are all ~183 ppm we conclude that they are all bound in a similar way most probably with the inhibitor carboxylate g...

Semi-supervised linear discriminant analysis
(2011)

Abstract:
Fisher's linear discriminant analysis is one of the most commonly used and studied classification methods in chemometrics. The method finds a projection of multivariate data into a lower dimensional space so that the groups in the data are well separated. The resulting projected values are subsequently used to classify unlabeled observations into the groups. A semi-supervised version of Fisher's linear discriminant analysis is developed, so that the unlabeled observations are also used in the model fitting procedure. This approach is advantageous when few labeled and many unlabeled observations are available. The semi-supervised linear discriminant analysis method is demonstrated on a number of data sets where it is shown to yield better separation of the groups and improved classification over Fisher's linear discriminant analysis.
