Religion and Irish cinema in studies
(2008)
Brereton, Pat
Abstract:
In classics like The Quiet Man and Ryan’s Daughter representations of the clergy and religion in Irish cinema has to some extent reflected perceptions of the church in the wider Irish society. These representations were certainly favourable, validating the great reverence in which the people then held their church. An apparent anti-Catholic agenda was given voice more recently, which was precipitated by the numerous church scandals of the 1990s. However, it still took a long time for representations of institutional violence by the clergy to be documented as exemplified recently in The Magdalene Sisters (2002) and Song for a Raggy Boy (2003). This paper will concentrate on close narrative readings of these films to illustrate how cinematic representations of Catholic authority figures involved in such abuse can be read as endorsing an anti-clerical and broadly secular humanist discourse. I suggest however, that these provocative texts nonetheless remain foregrounded within religious...

The internet as a relationship marketing tool - some evidence from Irish companies
(1999)
Geiger, Susi; Martin, Shane G.
Abstract:
This article explores the strategies underlying the use of the internet as a marketing tool by Irish businesses. Three different approaches to internet Marketing are described: the ornamental, the informational and the relational. It is shown that, theoretically, the internet offers a unique opportunity for marketers to build up and maintain relationships with their clients. However, data collected through a mail survey and a content analysis of web sites reveal that currently the most frequent use of the internet by Irish companies still follows an ornamental or, at most, informational pattern. The authors discuss whether this discrepancy between internet potential and practice is due to the social basis of market relationships or whether it can be seen as evidence that the adaptation of a new marketing tool follows an incremental pattern.

Private car transport and the 10% RES-T target - quantifying the contribution of EVs and biofuels
(2010)
Daly, Hannah E.; Ó Gallachóir, Brian P.
Abstract:
In 2008, renewable energy accounted for less than 1% of final energy consumption in the Irish transport sector. In order to increase this share to 10% by 2020 as required under EU directive 2009/28/EC, the Irish government has introduced two specific measures: 10% of the transport fleet is to be powered by electricity by 2020, and an obligation on road transport fuel suppliers that biofuels account for a certain portion of their fuel sales. This study forecasts the impact of these existing measures towards meeting the 10% RES-T target by 2020, focussing on private car transport. The methodology presented is derived from a forecast of private car fuel demand based on a technological stock model of Ireland’s fleet. This paper demonstrates the use of this as a tool firstly as an energy forecasting technique and secondly as a method for evaluating the effects of policy measures on the technological composition and consequent renewable energy demand and related CO2emissions of private ca...

Irish participation in EU FP7 (2007 - 2013) funded competitive marine research projects: 2009 supplement
(2010)
O'Sullivan, Geoffrey; Twomey, Sarah
Abstract:
The EU Framework Research Programme (FP), and in the current context the 7th Framework Programme (FP7: 2007-2013), continues to be a major source of competitive R & D funding for Irish marine researchers. The 2009 Supplement provides information on new FP7 research awards granted in 2009 to Irish marine researchers and up-dates the 2007-2008 Report published in June 2009. Seventeen research projects are profiled including three 2008 awards (STANDPOINT, WAVETRAIN II and AIRSEA) and fourteen 2009 awards bringing total participation in FP7 over the period 2007 to 2009 to 43 projects worth over 17.5 million in grant-aid. This figure is already in excess of the 10.6m (59) projects won in the FP6 (2002-2006) Programme and represents 11.5% of the total Irish drawdown to-date (FP7: 2007-2009) of 152.7million

The influence of the promotion of the Irish language on Ireland's socio-economic development
(2006)
Walsh, John Charles
Abstract:
This dissertation is an investigation of the influence of the promotion of the Irish language on Ireland's socio-economic development. The research question is based on a tradition of understanding of the link between the Irish language and Ireland's socio-economic development, stretching back at least 150 years. Various authors have argued that the promotion of Irish is not only about re-establishing the language as a means of communication, but that it will bring broader social, economic and cultural benefits to Ireland as a whole. In order to investigate the research question, the relationships which these authors posit are interrogated in the light of various bodies of theory in the social sciences (economics, sociology, political economy, development studies and sociolinguistics). A typology of competing approaches to language and development is presented and a theoretical framework appropriate to the analysis elaborated. This framework - the linguistic political econ...

Building on a terminology resource – the Irish experience
(2010)

Abstract:
www.focal.ie is the national database of Irish language terminology. In this paper, we examine: (i) the impact achieved by this resource in the five year period since work commenced; (ii) the possibilities which have arisen from one project over a short time span, to develop sub-projects and related initiatives; and (iii) the advantages and opportunities arising from the creation of one high-quality electronic language resource. The Irish case shows that the development of high-quality resources for a lesser-used language can have interesting and unexpected knock-on effects. We present eight stages and aspects of term planning: preparation/planning; research; standardisation; dissemination; implantation; evaluation; modernisation/maintenance; and training. Fiontar, in its work, has moved from its initial involvement in the dissemination of terminology, to take an active part in other aspects of term planning for Irish: research, standardisation, evaluation, modernisation and training...

Towards a regional understanding of Irish traditional music
(2009)
Kearney, David
Abstract:
The geography of Irish traditional music is a complex, popular and largely unexplored element of the narrative of the tradition. Geographical concepts such as the region are recurrent in the discourse of Irish traditional music but regions and their processes are, for the most part, blurred or misunderstood. This thesis explores the geographical approach to the study of Irish traditional music focusing on the concept of the region and, in particular, the role of memory in the construction and diffusion of regional identities. This is a tripartite study considering people, place and music. Each of these elements impacts on our experience of the other. All societies have created music. Music is often associated with or derived from places. Some places construct or reinforce their identity through the music and musicians through which they are associated. The thesis challenges conventional discourse on regional styles that construct an imagined pattern of regions based on subtle musica...

Exploring the form and function of dissident Irish republican online discourses
(2012)
Conway, Maura; Bowman-Grieve, Lorraine
Abstract:
This article seeks to contribute to broadening the focus of research in the area of violent online political extremism by examining the use of the internet by dissident Irish Republicans and their supporters. The argument here is not that the internet substitutes face-to-face contacts amongst Irish Republicans, including violent dissidents, nor that it currently plays a central role in processes of radicalisation into violent dissident groups, but that it has an important support function in terms of providing an ‘always-on’ space for discussion, consumption, and production of Irish Republicanism and thus a potentially educative role in terms of introducing ‘newbies’ to violent dissident Republicanism while also acting as a ‘maintenance’ space for the already committed. This exploratory study considers the importance of these functions in the context of repeated suggestions that the dissidents have no significant support base or constituency as internet activity certainly gives the ...

Found in translation: Franco-Irish translation relationships in nineteenth-century Ireland
(2013)
Milan, Michele
Abstract:
Various studies of the long-standing relationship between French and Irish cultures have revealed multiple evidence of mutual exchange. Yet, the role played by translation and translators has been largely neglected as a contribution to this relationship and to Hiberno-French cultural developments. This doctoral research on Franco-Irish translation relationships in nineteenth-century Ireland aims at redressing this omission, thereby supporting the idea that translation history is a useful tool for widening and adjusting our perspective on past cultural exchanges. Through the lens of translation, the present study underlines some of the key political and cultural debates in nineteenth-century Ireland, shedding light on the contribution of Ireland’s agents of translation to these debates. In addition to conceptual underpinnings drawn from the field of translation studies, and with particular attention paid to historical context, this research aims at showing key aspects of French-Irish...

Marine Mammals and Megafauna in Irish Waters - Behaviour, Distribution and Habitat Use- Final Summary Report.
(2013)
Berrow, S.D.; O’Brien, J.; O’Connor, I.; McGrath, D.; Wall, D.
Abstract:
Irish waters are internationally important for cetaceans (whales, dolphins and porpoises), with 24 species recorded to date. These range from the harbour porpoise, the smallest species in European waters, to the blue whale, the largest animal to ever have lived on Earth. All cetaceans and their habitats are protected under Irish and international law. The research termed Marine Mammals and Megafauna in Irish Waters – behaviour, distribution and habitat use was delivered under six Work Packages. The deliverables under this project will provide data which could be used to address a wide range of issues, and will contribute to developing policy advice on meeting Ireland’s statutory obligations.

The death of Irish trade protectionism: a political economy analysis
(2013)
Breen, Michael; Dorgan, James
Abstract:
The decision to abandon protectionism and move to a more open economy is considered one of the most important developments in modern Irish economic history. Drawing on recent work in the field of international political economy, we propose a new explanation for this important policy change based on interest groups’ demands. More specifically, we argue that Irish agriculture’s needs were highly influential in the policy decisions that were taken in the 1950s. Without the threat of exclusion from the emerging process of European integration and the accompanying loss of traditional markets for agricultural exports, protectionism would have persisted for some time. But we also suggest that the absence of significant objection from industry—supposedly the potentially adversely affected group, as the beneficiary of protection—reflects the changing balance between exporter and protectionist interests in that sector.

The exploitation of megrim Lepidorhombus whiffiagonis by the Irish demersal fleet
(1991)
Fahy, E; Fannon, E
Abstract:
Two species of megrim occur in Irish waters but Lepidorhombus whiffiagonis constitutes the bulk of the catch by the Irish demersal fleet. Megrim is exploited as a by-catch of gadoid fisheries and is particularly associated with fisheries for Nephrops, angler and ray. Over the past 25 years megrim landings from the ICES divisions adjoining Ireland have fluctuated between 6,000 and 21,000 tonnes but there has been a gradual upward trend of which Ireland has taken an increasing share, rising to 1,800 tonnes in 1980. Spain exerts most influence in this fishery, being the location of the main market for megrim as well as having the greatest catching power. The most significant developments in the exploitation of megrim over the past twenty years are identified as the establishment of the European Exclusive Fishery Zone in 1977 and the entry of Spain to the Community in 1986. The importance of division Vlla as a producer of megrim has declined and the main fisheries for the species are in...

Appropriate measure of unemployment in an Irish Phillips Curve
(1975)
Geary, Patrick T.; Jones, Roderick M.
Abstract:
A generalisation of the Phillips curve for a developing country, recently proposed by Modigliani and Tarentelli (1973), is modified and applied to the Irish economy for the period 1953-72 using annual data. The results indicate that a redefinition of the unemployment variable to allow for the structural characteristics of the Irish labour force fails to improve the overall fit of the Phillips relationship or the significance of the unemployment term itself. In addition, the results using unadjusted unemployment variables revealed both a small and rather weak relationship between unemployment and wage inflation, a result similar to that found by Geary and McCarthy (1975). To the extent that the rate of unemployment reflects domestic excess demand, this result provides little support for the view that Irish wage inflation is largely determined by domestic excess demand. In the context of a small open economy, this outcome is hardly surprising. The results also indicate that price expe...

Import dependence of the Irish economy during decade of '60s
(1978)
Farley, Noel J.J.
Abstract:
Was there a movement to growing import dependence in the Irish economy during the 1960s? Why? These are the central questions for which answers will be sought in this paper. Various measures of import dependence will be introduced, efforts will be made to sort out the roles of changing demand patterns and input coefficients in determining the direction of movement in Irish imports and some suggestions as to the causes of these observed movements will be provided. We will explore the ramifications of the findings for policy formulation and the future of the Irish economy.

Psychological disturbance in Ireland, in England and in Irish emigrants to England - comparative study
(1979)
Cochrane, Raymond; Stopes-Roe, Mary
Abstract:
A community survey involving 200 Irish emigrants to England, 200 natives of England and 200 residents of the Republic of Ireland was conducted to test a number of hypotheses drawn from mental hospital admission statistics. Contrary to the pattern revealed by these statistics, there was significantly less psychological disturbance amongst the immigrants than amongst the natives of England. It was also found that the Irish group had no more symptoms than the English. It is concluded that the high rate of mental hospital admissions among Irish immigrants is attributable to a small, separate group of deteriorated immigrants, rather than reflecting high levels of psychopathology throughout the community.

The measurement of market concentration in Irish banking
(1981)
Kinsella, R. P.
Abstract:
This paper analyses the market structure of Irish banking, with particular reference to market concentration. While it is generally recognised that the Irish banking system is relatively highly concentrated there have been few attempts to give empirical precision to this feature. I begin this paper by examining changes in the number of licensed banks since 1960. We next consider what is, perhaps, the most widely used measure of market concentration, the concentration ratio. While useful as a starting point, the concentration ratio has important limitations as a measure of market structure. Hence, we look at measures of relative concentration ? that is, measures which take account of changes in output among all licensed banks as opposed to just the largest banks. The Herfindahl-Index, which has been widely used in US studies of market structure in recent years, is discussed in some detail. Measures of inequality with respect to the distribution of output among all banks, including Lo...

Trade statistics of the Irish Free State in 1924
(1925)
Lyon, Stanley G.
Abstract:
The following is a criticism of Mr. Hooper's recent report on the trade of the Irish Free State during the year 1924. I shall have to excuse myself by mentioning that this paper is written at the request of our worthy President as a contribution for discussion on the subject of Irish Trade Statistics for to-day's meeting of the Statistical Society. As I happen to have had an intimate knowledge of the compilation of Trade Statistics in Ireland during the past twenty years and have made a study of the Trade Statistics of other countries, I may be permitted, I hope, to digress now and then from a close criticism of the Report in order to refer to general aspects of Trade Statistics, especially with reference to the subjects of compilation and of international comparisons.

The currency system of the Irish Free State
(1931)
Brennan, Joseph
Abstract:
At the time of the establishment of the Irish Free State the only effective currency of full legal tender existing in the country was the British currency note. Gold coin of the United Kingdom, although of full legal tender, had then ceased to be in effective circulation and the subsidiary British coin had, of course, only a limited legal tender. The main circulation of the country consisted of the notes of the Irish banks issued under the Bankers (Ireland) Act, 1845, and such notes were not legal tender, although notes of the Bank of Ireland were entitled to be accepted for payment of State revenue.

The Impact of Ex British Soldiers on The Irish Volunteers And Free State Army 1913-1924
(2006)
Whelan, Michael Joseph
Abstract:
The aim of this thesis is to highlight the service of ex-British soldiers in the Irish Army and to examine some of their experiences during the period 1913-1924 with particular emphasis on the Irish Civil War. There was a constant utilisation of ex-British servicemen for their skills and also their intimidation by republicans throughout the period but their involvement may have been one of the factors that helped the IRA to bring the British government to negotiate. This is also true for the Free State Army and its defeat of the IRA during the Civil War. The Irish Volunteers and IRA was a guerrilla force combating a conventional army in many cases by using British military skills learned from ex-British soldiers. The Free State Army fought the IRA, which it had also evolved from, portraying a conventional military force using many more ex-British soldiers and lessons they had learned from the War of Independence against the British and those learned during the Great War. The ex-Brit...

The Wyndham Land Act, 1903: The Final Solution To The Irish Land Question?
(2008)
Cosgrove, Patrick John
Abstract:
The Irish Land Act, 1903 was better known as the Wyndham Act after its author George Wyndham, chief secretary o f Ireland from 1900 to 1905. Despite being the most comprehensive and ambitious of all o f the land acts introduced by the British government for Ireland, it has received little attention from historians. In fact, apart from some contemporary explanatory legal texts, there is not a single published work devoted to the Wyndham Act. This thesis intends to address that lacuna and provide the first scholarly study o f the act from its origins to its subsequent amendment by the 1909 land act. By extension this thesis is a study o f various aspects o f the Irish land question from c.1900 to 1909. However, it does not purport to be a systematic examination of the nationalist political response to the act or, indeed, o f its contribution to the history o f the United Irish League (U.I.L.). Nor is it a comprehensive analysis o f the unionist political response. While both have been...

Troubled Formations Sexuality and the Irish Catholic Bildungsroman, 1916-1965
(2009)
Cronin, Michael
Abstract:
Summary This dissertation studies the historical development of the Irish Catholic bildungsroman from James Joyce to Edna O ’Brien and John McGahern. Specifically, this study is focused on the construction of sexuality in this genre. The novels are therefore read in conjunction with those d iscourses of sexuality that were circulating in Irish Catholic culture between the First World W a r and the Second Vatican Council. The first chapter reconsiders the concentration on issues of public morality that characterised Irish Catholicism in the early twentieth century, and most acutely in the two decades after independence. In the second chapter, I discuss the epistemic shift in the understanding of modern sexuality that was occasioned by the historical emergence of sexology and psychoanalysis, before moving on to develop a close reading of Joyce’s A Po rtra it o f the A rtis t A s a Young Man (1916). The third chapter contains close readings of two novels by Kate O ’Brien, and locates O...
