Inequalities and privileges : middle-class mothers and employment
(2011)
O'Hagan, Clare
Abstract:
This thesis explores the inequalities and privileges women experience by combining motherhood with paid employment. Examining the experiences of thirty ‘working mothers’ through an intersectional1 lens, this thesis reveals complex patterns of inequality and privilege, which arise at the intersection of motherhood with paid work because in contemporary Ireland the normative construction of an ideal worker is one without care responsibilities, and an ideal mother works full time in the home. Applying a feminist, intersectional research methodology, a case study was conducted with thirty women in a middle class Irish suburb. During focus group discussions and interviews, women reveal they experience different relations of privilege and penalty, because the social relations of gender, motherhood and class intersect with the institutional domains of family, workplace and society and at these intersections, women experience privileges or inequalities which vary according to each woman’s i...

Numerical Modelling and Measurement of Spatial Coherence in a Lithographic System
(2011)
Smith, Arlene
Abstract:
For the last five decades, optical lithography has been used universally for the manufacture of integrated circuits. The drive towards smaller circuit feature size, and the resulting increase in resolution of lithography systems, has been achieved by changing the source type. The original 300 - 400 nm discharge lamps have been replaced with more powerful and monochromatic excimer lasers, operating at user-selectable Ultra-Violet (UV) wavelengths from 157 - 351 nm. The success of UV lithography is due, in part, to the development of industrialized, line narrowed excimer lasers. However, the line narrowing process, along with the intrinsic coherence properties of the laser, results in a source with a considerable amount of spatial coherence. These partially coherent sources are complicated to model. Partially coherent image formation with two-dimensional intensity fields requires evaluating four-dimensional integrals. Thus calculations are complex, slow to process and place demands on...

Ireland’s European referendum: second take, high stake
(2009)
O'Brennan, John
Abstract:
The Irish people's second vote on the Lisbon treaty will have a decisive bearing on the European Union's constitutional future. The political misdirection of the "yes" side and the polemical vigour of the "no" put the result in the balance.

Ireland & the Lisbon Treaty: Quo Vadis?
(2008)
O'Brennan, John
Abstract:
The rejection of the Lisbon Treaty by the electorate on 12 June 2008 has presented the Irish government with the most serious crisis in external relations since the Second World War. This was the third such referendum on Europe held in Ireland since the millennium and the second plebiscite in three to result in a rejection of an EU Treaty following the failed Nice poll in 2001. There is no obvious solution to the dilemma the government faces and no obvious pathway to achieve ratification. There is however a clear consensus amongst the political parties that ratification constitutes both a clear political priority and a fundamental national interest. At the October European Council summit in Brussels, Taoiseach Brian Cowen promised to come back to the December meeting “with a view to our defining together the elements of a solution and a common path to follow”.1 But the external context is now clear – EU leaders indicated an unwillingness to re-negotiate any part of the Treaty: it wi...

Impact evaluation of an oral health intervention amongst primary school children in Ireland.
(2002)
Friel, Sharon; Kelleher, Cecily
Abstract:
A pilot oral health programme was developed which aimed to improve dental health knowledge and behaviour amongst Irish school children aged 7-12 years. The programme comprised two integral components: a television campaign, run over a 6-week period, was incorporated into the children's programme "Den TV" on national television, with video clips of a member of the music band Boyzone promoting key oral health messages; and a Smile of the Year contest. Concurrently, a dental nurse delivered an interactive talk with pupils, showed a video of the Den TV oral health programme and distributed posters and leaflets. The aim of this study was to assess the impact of the overall intervention on school pupils' dental health knowledge and reported behaviour. Thirty-two primary schools in two health board regions in the Republic of Ireland participated in the study. At baseline and after 6 weeks, 1534 school children completed specially developed questionnaires. There was a po...

Vision Algorithms and Systems for Vehicle and Pedestrian Detection in Night Time Conditions Using Vehicle Mounted Cameras
(2011)
O'Malley, Ronan
Abstract:
Statistics show that a disproportionate amount of road fatalities occur at night-time despite the greatly reduced volume of traffic on roads. This thesis describes a system aimed at addressing this issue by automatically detecting the two main categories of road users: other road vehicles and pedestrians. A vehicle detection system using a visible spectrum camera and a pedestrian detection system using an infrared camera are presented, followed by a fusion of these systems. An image processing system to detect and track vehicles using their lamps is presented. As the appearance of vehicle lamps in video can vary depending on camera hardware, a camera configuration process is implemented. To identify red tail- and brake-lamps, parameters for a red colour threshold are derived from automotive regulations. Higher intensity headlamps are identified by utilising a seeded region growing technique. To obtain vehicle location data from identified lamps, they are paired using bilateral sym...

Promoting student interest in mathematics : a framework for effective teaching of algebra at junior cycle
(2011)
Prendergast, Mark
Abstract:
In 2010, figures show that only 45 per cent of Irish students took Higher Level mathematics for the Junior Certificate examination and only 16 per cent took Higher Level mathematics for the Leaving Certificate examination www.examinations.ie). Research suggests that there are two major reasons for such low numbers, namely; ineffective teaching (NCCA, 2006) and a subsequent lack of student interest in the subject (PISA, 2003). Traditional styles of teaching make it difficult for students to take an interest in a confusing topic in which they can see no immediate relevance (MacGregor, 2004). This is particularly true regarding the topic of algebra and its teaching in school (Herscovics and Linchevski, 1994). Taking steps to enhance student interest in the mathematics classroom is one of the most direct ways to approach the problem of ineffective mathematics teaching (Mitchell, 1993). This thesis describes a pedagogical framework designed by the author for the purpose of promoting stud...

What do Final Year Engineering Students Know About Sustainable Development
(2011)
Nicolaou, Iacovos; Conlon, Eddie
Abstract:

This paper presents data from a project which aims to determine the level of knowledge and understanding of engineering students about Sustainable Development (SD). The data derives from a survey completed by final year engineering students in three Irish Higher Education Institutions. This paper is part of a larger study which examines the relationship between students’ and teachers’ understanding of SD. The results from the survey show that final year engineering students have a discipline-led conception of SD. The majority of the participants fail to acknowledge the complexity of the concept and focus only on environmental protection. Their knowledge of legislation relevant to SD and the social aspect of sustainability is deficient.

Abstract:
This paper examines the relationship between the internationalisation of firms in services and their innovation performance. We use firm‐level data over the period 2004‐ 2006 and estimate an augmented structural model to account for the role of foreign direct investment and exporting on the innovation performance of services firms in Ireland. Our research shows that in comparison to firms serving only the Irish market, domestic exporters were more likely to engage in R&D and innovation and they were more likely to be successful in terms of innovation output, over and above firm characteristics such as size and distance to the technology frontier. Further, we find that adoption of information and communication technologies was positively associated with innovation output. Co‐operation with suppliers was positively associated with all innovation types, while knowledge flows from customers and from the government or public research institutes were positively linked to product innov...

What Tyndall read: provenance, contents and significance of the Proby Bequest to Carlow Library

Abstract:
We give a preliminary description of the provenance and contents of the library that the Tyndalls kept in Hind Head House, in Surrey, and the path it followed to end up in the Carlow County Council Library. For the provenance we draw from unpublished personal accounts and from public aspects of the Tyndall family history, specially from Louisa’s side. The contents of the library comprises about 143 items, between books and pamphlets, which we mention individually, giving in some cases details of the connection between Tyndall and the author of the book. With regard to the significance of the library, we observe that most of the books were British or American editions of Tyndall’s own work, or gifts to Tyndall from other authors who followed on his work, specially with regard to applications of his microbiological findings. We conclude that perhaps Tyndall’s library had more the character of a trophy display-case than a working resource. This would contribute to explain some of the p...

A sustainable regional economic growth strategy for Ireland's Mid West : targets and policies
(2011)
Buckley, Melissa
Abstract:
The Mid West is considerably underdeveloped relative to other Irish regions and international economies, largely due to the region’s low value added service sector and a leakage of highly skilled labour, including graduates and female labour, from the region. The objective of this research is to establish the factors that drive regional economic growth in terms of pursuing a long term growth model for the Mid West and determining the key government policies required in order to stimulate this. The theoretical and empirical findings of this research show that a confluence of various factors drives regional economic growth, including physical and human capital, an exporting service sector, labour supply, trade, innovation, technological progress, clusters of economic activity and entrepreneurship. This research investigates key economic performance data for the Mid West Region. Policy prescriptions for the Mid West, based on ex-ante literature and case studies of best practice, are pr...

Business assets and divorce : balancing the competing interests
(2011)
Kean, Audrey
Abstract:
Matrimonial property law is an important but complex area of law and as a result has been the subject of much debate in many jurisdictions. The highly discretionary nature of Irish divorce legislation has made the development of a coherent and consistent body of case law particularly problematic in this jurisdiction. The constitutional and legislative requirement of “proper provision” represents the only judicial guidance but what is “proper” tends to vary on a case-by-case basis leading to an absence of predictability. A further complication, upon which this thesis focuses, is the absence of legislative guidance to the courts, in dealing with a spouse’s business or company assets on divorce. Whether the business assets of a spouse could or should be used to make proper provision for the dependent spouse is unclear, despite the constitutional importance attached to such provision. Central to the debate regarding company assets is whether the doctrine of separate legal personality ap...

EU Enlargement as a Factor in Ireland's Nice Treaty Referendum
(2002)
O'Brennan, John
Abstract:
In the aftermath of the shock result of the Nice Treaty referendum in Ireland in June 20011 it was commonly stated that the result did not represent the electorate’s rejection of European Union (EU) enlargement. In fact both supporters and opponents of the Nice Treaty agreed wholeheartedly on this point. The Taoiseach (Irish Prime Minister) and his Foreign Minister assured their counterparts in the EU and the candidate states of Central and Eastern Europe (CEE) that purely domestic factors explained the result –enlargement had not been an issue. Opponents of the Treaty, similarly, couched every public statement with an insistence that they were in favour of enlargement. These claims were treated with some scepticism in the CEE candidate states. Not only would the result complicate the ongoing enlargement negotiations; it might postpone accession indefinitely. This article has one central objective: it seeks to analyse the extent to which the issue of EU enlargement really mattered i...

Abstract:
Aim: Understanding the spatial distribution of high priority habitats and developing predictive models using climate and environmental variables to replicate these distributions are desirable conservation goals. The aim of this study was to model and elucidate the contributions of climate and topography to the distribution of a priority blanket bog habitat in Ireland, and to examine how this might inform the development of a climate change predictive capacity for peat-lands in Ireland. Methods: Ten climatic and two topographic variables were recorded for grid cells with a spatial resolution of 1010 km, covering 87% of the mainland land surface of Ireland. Presence-absence data were matched to these variables and generalised linear models (GLMs) fitted to identify the main climatic and terrain predictor variables for occurrence of the habitat. Candidate predictor variables were screened for collinearity, and the accuracy of the final fitted GLM was evaluated using fourfold cross-vali...

Abstract:
The aim of this paper is to contribute to understanding the nature of specialist and generalist human capital by exploring the ways in knowledge workers view their experience of working in specialist and generalist roles in pharmaceutical firms in Ireland and the UK. The findings are based on interviews with 55 knowledge workers employed in a range of scientific, technical and managerial positions in four Irish and two UK firms located in the pharmaceutical sector. Interviews were also conducted with nine human resource/training and development managers within these six firms. The findings suggest that the categorisation of human capital as either specialist or generalist is too rigid and does not take account of the fact that individuals may themselves choose to shape their careers by investing in a range of education, training and development opportunities that will enable them to move between specialist and generalist roles. The paper unpacks the concepts of specialist and gener...

Abstract:
The purpose of this article is to quantify the contribution of the increasing educational attainment of the Irish population to the prospective improvement in life expectancy over the next 50 years. This analysis uses recently published information for Ireland on life expectancy by level of education. This article also considers the implications of the new data on life expectancy for differences in death rates by level of education for different groups in the population today.

Restoring Credibility in Policy Making in Ireland
(2011)
FITZGERALD, JOHN
Abstract:
This paper first considers the origins of the Irish economic crisis. It discusses where the policy failures occurred, to what extent they were foreseeable, and how certain key financial institutions performed in the run up to the crisis. In the light of this analysis the paper then considers what institutional changes could feasibly be implemented which would strengthen policy making for the future.

Abstract:
Over the last decade Irish tax policy has undergone dramatic shifts. As the economy boomed in the early 2000s, income tax rates were reduced, tax credits were increased and the standard rate band was widened. Social welfare benefits were increased substantially over the same period. However, with the onset of the crisis in 2007‐2008, the taxes that the government had increasingly relied upon during the boom years – such as stamp duty and capital gains taxes – collapsed, creating an urgent need for new revenue generation. The introduction of income levies ‐ later replaced by the Universal Social Charge ‐ significantly increased the revenue from taxes on income.2 Welfare payments, particularly for those of working age, were reduced.

Social welfare benefits were increased substantially over the same period. However, with the onset of the crisis in 2007‐2008, the taxes that the government had increasingly relied upon during the boom years – such as stamp duty and capital gains taxes – collapsed, creating an urgent need for new revenue generation. The introduction of income levies ‐ later replaced by the Universal Social Charge ‐ significantly increased the revenue from taxes on income. Welfare payments, particularly for those of working age, were reduced.

From Leaving Certificate to Leaving School: A Longitudinal Study of Sixth Year Students
(2011)
BANKS, JOANNE; SMYTH, EMER
Abstract:
Current debates about senior cycle education in Ireland have raised a number of crucial questions: What effect does the Leaving Certificate exam have on young people’s learning experiences? What helps students to do well in the Leaving Certificate exam? How do young people make decisions about their future life after school? What kinds of skills and competencies do young people develop in the course of their second-level education? This book provides an important evidence base for answering these and other questions by examining the experiences of young people in sixth year as they prepare for the Leaving Certificate exam and life after school. It is the latest book in a series of publications stemming from the Post-Primary Longitudinal Study, which has fol- lowed a cohort of over 900 students in twelve case-study schools, selected to capture key dimensions of school policy and practice. This is the first such longitudinal study in the Irish context and it yields rich in- sights int...

Abstract:

Purpose

Subsidiary units must respond to emerging threats including disaggregation of value chains and increased headquarters monitoring and control which have lead to a cycle of subsidiary decline. We recognize the value of subsidiary initiatives as a short term response but argue that subsidiary long term survival and growth will depend on the unit’s ability to align with its parent strategic activities and knowledge base.

Design/ Methodology

This research is part of an ongoing quantitative and qualitative study programme of Irish subsidiary operations of foreign MNCs. This paper integrates our broader research to date with both in-depth interviews of a focal case with a comprehensive review of the literature relating to MNC and subsidiary management to identify how subsidiaries can respond to cur...

The Grassroots Pro-Asylum Seeker Movement in the Republic of Ireland: A Social Movement Perspective
(2011)
Moran, Niall
Abstract:
This thesis is an in-depth analysis of the Grassroots Pro-Asylum Seeker Movement in the Republic of Ireland between 1994 and 2004. It seeks to understand and analyse this development of the Grassroots Pro-Asylum Seeker Movement in Ireland from a social movement perspective. The movement itself contains three key phases of mobilisation: 1) Radical Anti-Racism; 2) The Multicultural Support Group and; 3) The Anti-Deportation Group. Each of these phases is described in detail in the narrative of the movement. Using the concept historicity I argue that each phase of the movement constructs a specific relationship between itself, the asylum-seeker and the Irish state. The nature and significance of each of these relationships is analysed by focussing upon the role that formal ideology plays in the construction of these relationships. This analysis is then complemented by an examination of the process of collective identity construction. I argue that this is crucial to the process of chang...

Gramsci in Mayo: a Marxist perspective on social movements in Ireland
(2011)
Cox, Laurence
Abstract:
This paper draws on Antonio Gramsci, and Marxist social movement studies more generally, to understand some of the complexities and peculiarities involved in theorising movements in the Republic of Ireland. The paper is primarily theoretical, but is grounded in the real intellectual and political problem of giving an adequate account and explanation of the specificities of Irish social movements, with which I have grappled for several years. The question is a huge one, and this draft paper is hardly more than an initial sketch - but one whose justification may be found in the relative absence of other attempts at tackling the problem. If this attempt provokes better answers from other quarters, that is in itself a useful contribution. The question “what kind of movement context is Ireland?” is rarely considered seriously but should be an absolutely basic starting point for research and theory in this area. The most common response in mainstream academic writing is simply not to thin...
