Precarious professionality: A review of the experiences and employment status of graduates of the Higher Diploma in Further Education at Maynooth University’s Department of Adult and Community Education (2013-2017)
(2018)
O'Neill, Jerry; Fitzsimons, Camilla
Abstract:
This mixed-method study explores the occupational outcomes and experiences of 110 graduates (2013-2017) from the Higher Diploma of Further Education. This Teaching-Council accredited programme is run by the Department of Adult and Community Education (DACE) at Maynooth University. Findings suggest that the programme has had a significant transformative impact on many graduates. It is also clear that precarious working cultures in further and adult education may be having an impact on career and professional development opportunities for graduates. The report contains a number of recommendations which relate to the opportunities, responsibilities and roles of graduates as a community of practice, DACE, professional bodies, unions and employers.

Maynooth Musicology: Postgraduate Journal
(2008)
Dignam, Barbara; Higgins, Paul; Parker, Lisa
Abstract:
The aim of the Maynooth Musicology: Postgraduate Journal is twofold: it compiles a selection of articles written by postgraduate students in our department each year. It also affords up to three of our postgraduate students the valuable experience of editing their first journal, drawing on our joint professional work. This volume contains thirteen essays by postgraduate students reflecting current areas of specialism in the music department. Irish musical studies are addressed in articles by Adèle Commins, Jennifer O’Connor and Lisa Parker; Schubert studies are represented by Adam Cullen; nineteenth- and twentieth-century song studies are represented by Paul Higgins, Aisling Kenny and Meng Ren and Late European Romanticism by Jennifer Lee and Emer Nestor. Gender is addressed by Jennifer Halton and essays within the area of electro-acoustic music and music technology are contributed by Brian Bridges, Brian Carty and Barbara Dignam.

Abstract:
This handbook is intended for use by colleagues either considering or charged with setting up a writing centre in a higher education institution. In its compilation we have drawn from our own experiences here in Maynooth University, from the work of colleagues in other Irish higher education institutions, from colleagues' experiences outside of Ireland, from the literature in the area and from the collective wisdom communicated through national and international professional networks about writing.

Anniversary Essays - Forty Years of Geography at Maynooth. Volume 1 & 2
(2012)
Abstract:
The following collection of ‘Anniversar y Essays’ is an odd mix. But yet, looking through it, I find its oddness perfectly appropriate, because isn’t geography – the discipline and the subject matter – precisely that? Space is, as many of these essays explicit ly or implicitly highlight, a crazy mixture of thrown together objects, forces and ideas. And it’s this fact of geography that gives me heart when I flick through the following essays and think of them as representing what scholars and researchers and teachers in Maynooth’s Department of Geography have done over the last four decades. Sure, we’ve done more than what this collection captures, and there’s no doubt we’ll continue to do amazing things, but at this juncture, in our 40 th year, I believe this collection is a wonderful transect through the department’s development and a unique testimony to its intellectual vibrancy. All along the transect, we are exposed to the wide variety of research questions addressed by geograph...

The mortgage papers of St. Patrick’s College Maynooth, 1871-1923
(2005)
Dooley, Terence
Abstract:
On 1 January 1871, under the terms of the Irish Church act of 1869, St Patrick's College, Maynooth, received a capital sum of £369,040 in compensation for the withdrawal of the annual parliamentary grant of £26,360 that had been set under the Maynooth act of 1845. Much to the delight of the then president, Rev C. W. Russell, the trustees would 'no longer [be] subject to official control, nor liable to be made the occasion of unseemly exhibitions in Parliament' but would have the power to independently administer the entire property, 'subject to one sole condition, the equitable one of applying the proceeds [of endowment] to the proper purposes of the trust'. In other words, the capital sum invested would have to provide an annual return comparable (at least) to the previous annual grant in order to safeguard the financial running of the college, of which the trustees, the only legally constituted religious corporation in Ireland, were now the legal proprietors.

Location Based Services of University Town Based on OpenStreetMap: NUI Maynooth as an example
(2009)
Zheng, Jianghua; Ciepłuch, B.; Mooney, Peter; Winstanley, Adam C.
Abstract:
The university campus of NUI Maynooth forms a substantial part of Maynooth town. Location based services (LBS) could be important for visitors to the campus and town in assisting them to make the mast of their stay, particularly if they are not familiar with the town. In this paper we discuss an LBS application for Maynooth university campus and Maynooth town based on OpenStreetMap. The solution uses open source software and public participation rules to build its database. The work provides a prototype LBS system for NUI Maynooth which is currently under active development. The paper mainly describes some completed components of the work: data acquisition and pedestrian navigation algorithm design. Future work on path optimization and 3D applications is also discussed.

Maynooth - towards a community profile 1750-1911
(2001)
Durack, Susan
Abstract:
The thesis is about communities in Maynooth from the mid-eighteenth-century to the early twentieth-century. It looks at the worker within the community and focuses on three areas of the town - Carton demesne, Maynooth town itself and the seminary of St. Patrick’s College Maynooth. Employer-employee relationships, job descriptions, status, wage levels, length of service, gender ratios, recruitment and mobility are explored particularly in relation to the servants and workers of Carton demesne and those of St. Patrick’s College. A profile o f Maynooth town emerges through an examination of its population, housing, property ownership and economic and social activity. Change over time and the nature and level of interaction between three employment loci is explored. Certain groups or ‘communities of interest’ emerge, some of which operate on separate levels to others. They are the servants of Carton demesne and those of St. Patrick’s College who are not of the locality and who are bound...

Maynooth Musicology: Postgraduate Journal
(2009)
Carthy, Brian; O'Connell, Pat; Strahan, Barbara
Abstract:
The second issue of Maynooth Musicology Postgraduate Journal will be a memorable one for the student editors, and for me too as founder and general editor. Many of the young musicologists who have written these essays will embark on new journeys, leaving our department with MLitts. or PhDs, some bringing their experience at Maynooth to bear on studies further afield. It is to the students of this volume and to musicology students in general that this preface is directed, for what matters on such occasions is not so much the educational givens of your background but the state of readiness of your own spirit. In fact, the ability to start out upon your own impulse is fundamental to the gift of keeping going on your own terms, not to mention the further and more fulfilling gift of getting going all over again -never resting upon the oars of success or in the doldrums of disappointment, but getting renewed and revived by some further transformation.

Abstract:
Maynooth University (MU) is located 22 km from Dublin city and traces its roots to 1795 when St Patrick’s College was founded as a seminary in the town. The Universities Act 1997 established National University of Ireland (NUI) Maynooth, now known as Maynooth University (MU), as a standalone secular institution and a constituent university of the National University of Ireland (NUI), a system of colleges set up under the Irish Universities Act 1908, and amended under the 1997 Irish Universities Act. MU currently has over 11,000 students. The library was founded in 1795 and is now housed in the John Paul II library and the Russell library (pre-1850 collections). It provides an integrated service to both MU ( https://www.maynoothuniversity.ie/) and St Patrick’s College Maynooth ( http://maynoothcollege.ie/ ). Froebel College of Education was established in 1943 and was located in Blackrock, Co. Dublin. Its focus was early childhood education. The college was named after th...

THE BIBLE IN MAYNOOTH
(1995)
Seymour, Valerie
Abstract:
The story of the Bible in Maynooth mirrors the separate yet parallel development of the translation, publishing and dissemination of the Scriptures by the two main Christian denominations in the post-Reformation period. Before the middle of the fifteenth century manuscript bibles were for the exclusive use of the clergy and nobility. The Latin Vulgate version reigned supreme, well under Church control. Some hundred editions of the Vulgate were printed by the end of the fifteenth century. Many vernacular versions emerged in Europe from the mid-1450s onward. There were over 75 versions of Scripture in German,French, Dutch, Italian and Spanish before 1540. In the same period some 50 English versions were printed.2 The emergence of these vernacular versions in European languages represents another strand in bible production. For a short period there were many versions of the Vulgate and increasing numbers in the vernacular being produced simultaneously. The bible collections in Maynooth...

Bibles from around the world: The Hibernian Bible Society collection at Maynooth University Library
(2017)
McCormack, Barbara
Abstract:
One of the largest research collections at Maynooth University Library ( https://www.maynoothuniversity.ie/library ) is the Hibernian Bible Society (HBS) collection, which contains over 2,000 bibles in more than 600 languages. In 1986 the HBS bible collection was permanently deposited in the Russell Library ( https://www.maynoothuniversity.ie/library/collections/russell-library ) at Maynooth University ( https://www.maynoothuniversity.ie/ ) and St Patrick’s College, Maynooth (http://maynoothcollege.ie/). A series of sheaf catalogues accompanied the collection, providing important details relating to provenance and imprints. Items in the collection have retained their original shelf-marks and are identifiable by the prefix ‘HBS’. Highlights of the collection include copies of the first published edition of the Greek New Testament, the King James Bible and the earliest edition of the Old Testament in Irish.1 A decision was made in late 2016 to catalogue material in the HBS ...

University Writing Centre Tutoring Handbook
(2017)
O'Brien, Sarah; Tighe-Mooney, Sharon; Farrell, Alison
Abstract:
This handbook is designed with two audiences in mind. The first of these is tutors working in the Maynooth University Writing Centre; the second is any writing centre director who may wish to produce or revitalise a handbook for writing centre tutors. With regards to the latter, we hope that this modest offering might prevent colleagues in other setting from having to start from scratch should they wish to develop a handbook for their tutors. The handbook has been compiled by existing Maynooth University Writing Centre staff and staff who have since moved on from the Writing Centre.

First Year Students’ Mathematics Learning Experiences at the National University of Ireland Maynooth
(2010)
Mac an Bhaird, Ciaran; O'Shea, Ann
Abstract:
This paper considers the factors that impact on student success in first year science mathematics courses at the National University of Ireland Maynooth (NUI Maynooth). These factors include previous performance in the subject, attendance at lectures and tutorials, the number of assignments submitted, and attendance at the Mathematics Support Centre (MSC). The results of this initial study will be used to identify behaviour patterns that lead to successful completion of first year courses. The findings will help mathematics departments to target support initiatives in areas which are most likely to improve student learning.

The Russell Library, Maynooth University, recently exhibited some of the oldest material from the collections of St. Patrick’s College, Maynooth – a series of four thousand year old Babylonian clay tablets and stamp seals from ancient Mesopotamia. The collection of sixty-five cuneiform tablets in the Sumerian language and a pre-writing stamp seal were amassed by an Irish army chaplain during the First World War. The material dates from c. 3,500-1,900 BC and includes both cuneiform tablets and cones bearing royal inscriptions from the early Babylonian period, as well as administrative and economic accounts from the Ur III period (c. 2100-2000 BC).

A History of Maynooth College Chapel: 1845 to 1905

Abstract:
The principal aim of this administrative study is to contextualise the history of Maynooth College Chapel. The objective is to elucidate the facts and circumstances which form it's history. As the present study had not been researched to any great degree the investigation is conducted through interpretation and observation of primary source material. Three main perspectives are adopted in order to highlight the national character of the chapel. The first perspective is political in it's nature. It is developed essentially throughout the first chapter. Early legislation for the college and it's consequences for the chapel are assessed. The decisions taken to initiate and to proceed with the chapel project are reviewed. Effectively chapter one sets the scene for the following chapters. The socio-economic perspect is the second perspective employed in the study. It sets up the background framework for the second chapter. This chapter deals primarily with the funding of t...

The religious mind of Maynooth's Gaelic manuscripts
(1995)

Abstract:
By a happy coincidence the byline for Maynooth College's bicentenary celebrations, 'for faith and fatherland', is a precise description of that last great flowering of native spirituality during the Baroque Age (1600-1700). James Fitzmaurice Fitzgerald, leader of the 1579 rebellion, insisted that 'zeal for God's honour and their own country' was the rebels' prime motivation, just as Hugh O'Neill declared in 1615 that all his acts of defiance against the crown were 'in defence of the Catholic faith and of his fatherland'. From the defeat at Kinsale in 1601 to the Famine of1847-8, the old Gaelic order suffered political, military, social and economic disaster. Paradoxically, and perhaps consequentially, no other period produced such a volume of native poetry and prose, of such literary and intellectual merit. The native bardic tradition, isolated for the most part from the mainstream of the medieval Continental tradition by the conserv...

Maynooth Development Plan exercise
(1992)
Waddington, Shelagh B.
Abstract:
The following field exercise is designed for use with Leaving Certificate students. It is based on Maynooth, Co. Kildare, a town of approximately 5,000 inhabitants plus a large third level student population attending St. Patrick's College. The town has grown rapidly over the past sevetal years, becoming increasingly a dormitory settlement for Dublin. The exercise outlined here need not be carried out in Maynooth, as it may be readily adapted for use in any town or city area for which County Development Plan information is available. The exercise was "roadtested" byagroup of AGTI members on 16th May 1992, and I gratefully acknowledge their helpful comments on that occasion.

Abstract:
The papers of Domhnall Ua Buachalla (1866-1963), politician and Maynooth shopkeeper, were given on short term loan to Maynooth University Library in late 2015 for use in the University’s 1916 commemoration. Ua Buachalla’s family, who still live locally, were keen to share this treasured collection for the commemoration, while still retaining ownership of the items.

Abstract:
The Ken Saro-Wiwa Archive, a collection of deathrow correspondence and other material from Nigerian writer and activist Ken Saro-Wiwa to Irish nun Sister Majella McCarron (OLA), is one of Maynooth University Library’s most hard-working collections. Since acquiring the archive in 2011, it has been utilised as part of a wide range of outreach experiences, including seminars, exhibitions (nationally and internationally), blog posts, articles, poetry workshops, school visits, and guided tours. Most recently, the collection was the focus of a workshop delivered as part of the module Peace, Religion and Diplomacy offered on both the MA in Mediation and Conflict Intervention and the MA in International Peacebuilding, Security, and Development Practice at Maynooth University (MU). New approaches to skill acquisition and critical thinking using primary sources are increasingly common across campus and beyond. They present to the Library exciting ways to engage with users, and to the archivist...

Abstract:
There was great excitement in the College on the morning of 13 January 1847. The students had noticed preparations in the parlour and had discovered that Daniel O’Connell was expected imminently. They rushed to the gate to cheer him in and escort him, together with his son John, to the front hall in Stoyte House where the President, Dr Renehan, stood waiting on crutches (having sprained his ankle). At that time the back quadrangle had not yet been built; but work had just begun. Father and son were taken to inspect the new foundations after which the Liberator stood at the door of New House and addressed the students He spoke of evils to be faced, rejoiced in the new conversions to the Catholic Church in the universities of England (John Henry Newman was one), and encouraged them all in the defence of the Faith. He then addressed the Juniors, after which he was asked to go to the prayer hall at the request of the senior students. The whole College had assembled there. The students w...
