A Feminist Icon: Celebrating the Life and Work of Isabella Andreini and the Commedia dell’arte in Renaissance Italy

A Feminist Icon: Celebrating the Life and Work of Isabella Andreini and the Commedia dell’arte in Renaissance Italy
(2008)
Halton, Jennifer
Abstract:
The late-sixteenth and early-seventeenth centuries brought a wave of opportunity for the female Italian musician. The role of women in society served as a frequent discourse, as their male counterparts decided whether or not their duties should extend outside the domestic realm. Male humanists presented their habitual hostility towards the musical education of women, while the more sensitive and perceptive patrons; like Duke Alfonso d’Este of the court of Ferrara, were in full appreciation of the musical affluence of women musicians.1 Despite this looming conflict, ‘more women emerged as composers in Italy between 1566 and 1700 than in any previous period in Western music history- indeed, than in all of that history taken together’.2 Emerging from this group were the virtuoso musician-composers Barbara Strozzi (1619-1664), Francesca Caccini (1587-C1640), Gaspara Stampa (1523-1554), and Madalena Casulana (01540-01590), all of whom have been justly projected into the canon of music an...

The promotion of music in Dublin: women’s lectures and articles supporting the city’s musical development
(2009)
O'Connor, Jennifer
Abstract:
In nineteenth century Dublin there was a desire for music to play a greater role in the cultural aspect of the city. Women contributed to achieving this as teachers and performers but also as promoters of the cause. Their participation in the promotion of music in Ireland was mainly through articles, lectures and the organisation of events such as the Feis Ceoil. This chapter will examine their attempts to improve musical standards and to increase the involvement in, and appreciation of, music by a larger section of society. Through a discussion of the work of Margaret O’Hea, Edith Oldham and Annie Patterson it will present an evaluation of women’s involvement in the promotion of music around the turn of the twentieth century.

(2008)
O'Connell, Pat
Abstract:
This chapter discusses the ‘Galway Band’, the band of the Galway Regiment of Militia, referred to in the advertisement and outlines the military and non-military repertoire that has survived in part-books in the Manuscript Library of Trinity College, Dublin. The chapter asserts that the band belongs to the English tradition of the European genre of wind-band music referred to as Harmoniemusik.

Time as a circular spectrum and the retrospective device in Gustav Mahler’s Symphony no. 3 (1895-1896)
(2009)
Lee, Jennifer
Abstract:
The function of this chapter is to examine Mahler’s philosophical concept of time and the embodiment of this within the programmatic and structural model of his six-movement Symphony no. 3. This chapter shall argue that the composer’s newfound concept of time was borne out of Friedrich Nietzsche’s fundamental doctrine in his book Also Sprach Zarathustra1 (Thus Spoke Zarathustra) of 1885, from which Mahler drew directly in the fourth movement of his third symphony. It must be stated at this initial stage, however, that the contextual significance of Nietzsche’s work extends far beyond the borders of the fourth movement, instead radiating from this crucial midpoint in both directions and acting as the central anchor from which all contributory philosophical expressions in the symphony evolve. The subject of Mahler’s concept and treatment of time with regard to Nietzschean principals is but one of the ingredients exhibiting a contextual and often disguised correlation between the liter...

Dialectic process and sonata form in Schubert’s A minor String Quartet, D804
(2009)
Cullen, Adam
Abstract:
This chapter contributes to the growing number of studies that aim to disabuse Schubertian literature of the myths regarding Schubert’s competence in large-scale instrumental forms. Unfortunately, some relatively recent claims by Stephen Hefling (which will be detailed below) in relation to the A minor String Quartet resonate with more dated approaches to Schubert’s output, particularly approaches which readily see deviations from standard norms of form and harmony as compositional failings rather than attempting to understand what inspired those changes.2 This chapter is concerned with Schubert’s approach to sonata form as it appears in the first movement of this string quartet.

Benjamin Britten: art song, a synthesis of words and music — issues and approaches to text-setting
(2009)
Higgins, Paul
Abstract:
The clarity of verbal expression evident throughout Benjamin Britten’s (1913-1976) art songs serves to highlight the central role which the setting of pre-existing written poetic texts occupies in his compositional process and in the aesthetic appreciation of his interpretation. For Britten, text acts initially as a source of musical imagination, but it also provides the composer with a framework with which to express musically his selected, literary-based ideas.

Music of a lesser genre? Schubert’s development and transformation of the piano duet medium

Music of a lesser genre? Schubert’s development and transformation of the piano duet medium
(2009)
Strahan, Barbara
Abstract:
Schubert’s gift for transforming smaller genres into greater ones is not unique to his Lieder: the formal, stylistic and aesthetic innovations in Schubert’s piano duets reveal an authentic development of this genre. Schubert’s four-hand piano repertoire enjoyed the same performance setting as his songs, but in reception history have not enjoyed the same level of popularity. This chapter therefore seeks to examine why the duets have been misrepresented in scholarship and criticism, and also how Schubert’s contribution differed radically to that of his predecessors. Firstly, the significance of the social milieu of the early nineteenth century in cultivating the duets shall be considered as also the many negative associations accompanying this musical setting. Key issues of reception history, which have contributed to the neglect of Schubert’s piano duets within Schubert scholarship, will also be addressed. Following an exploration as to why these works have been neglected within scho...

Abstract:
This volume features articles written by the postgraduate presenters at Maynooth University's first annual New Perspectives: Postgraduate Symposium on the Humanities (NPPSH), which took place in October 2016. This conference, which coincided with the annual Dean’s Lecture, strove to highlight scholarship conducted by postgraduates in the Arts & Humanities in Ireland. From explorations of 20th century literature, to contributions in Irish music, to the intersection of STEM and the Humanities, the articles in this volume showcase a breadth of scholarship and a diversity of approaches which highlights the multifaceted nature of an Arts & Humanities education.

Cataloguing the St. Canice's Cathedral Library Collection at Maynooth University
(2017)
Campbell, Yvette; McCormack, Barbara
Abstract:
This article outlines the processes involved in cataloguing the historic St. Canice’s Cathedral Library collection of over 3000 rare books. Cataloguing began on the collection in June 2015 and subsequently ceased in March 2016 to facilitate the main objective of allowing access to this collection without delay. Collection processing was carried out on a phased basis: the first stage was to list the material in the collection and then each item was catalogued to a minimum level. Priority was given to 14 of the rarer books in the collection to comply with the DCRM(B) rare books cataloguing standard, including four items of incunabula (pre-1500 printing). Phase 2 of this retrospective cataloguing project will include full bibliographical descriptions for all materials, following prescribed rules set forth in DCRM(B). The challenges of cataloguing a rare books collection using the St. Canice’s Collection as an example are considered. Metadata issues experienced in displaying such collec...

Utopia by Thomas More (1478-1535)
(2016)
Morrin, Olive
Abstract:
Thomas More’s seminal work Utopia was first published five hundred years ago in 1516 in Leuven, Belgium. Utopia depicts a fictional island where all the inhabitants share a common culture and live a simple shared lifestyle. Canon Thomas Finan, St. Patrick’s College, Maynooth donated his collection of books to the library in 2010 which included many books relating to Thomas More. Included in his collection is Thomas More’s Utopia which is held in Special Collections. It was reprinted in 1899 from the 2nd and revised edition of 1556.

Evaluation Report on the Algebra Project in Ireland
(2017)
Dempsey, Majella; O'Shea, Ann
Abstract:
The Algebra Project in Ireland (API) study was a year-long initiative funded by SFI through the SFI Discover Call 2015 scheme and sponsored by the NCCA and the Kildare Education Centre. Additional support for the project came from the PDST and KWETB. The initiative took place in 2016 and continued into 2017, and comprised of three parts - at primary level, post-primary level and at university level. The aim of the project was to introduce the curriculum and pedagogy of the US Algebra Project to Irish teachers (both in-service and pre-service) and students in order to develop mathematical teaching and learning. In this report, we describe the project in detail, and present data from the evaluation carried out by researchers at Maynooth University.

Evidence-Based Acquisitions (EBA): A case study from Maynooth University Library
(2020)
Murphy, Elizabeth
Abstract:
Following a scoping exercise in summer 2017, the Library embarked on an EBA Pilot Project. The new model enabled the engagement of students in the selection process based on their interaction with the resources. Furthermore, it lead to unanticipated and different levels of engagement with some departments who were traditionally less keen on ebooks. The EBA Working Group was awarded the Maynooth University (MU) President’s Award for Service Innovation in May 2019. This presentation will outline the pilot and its implementation at MU Library, highlighting some of the issues and discussing the benefits and impact of the model.

The Medieval Manuscripts at Maynooth - Explorations in the Unknown
(2014)
Lucas, Peter J.; Lucas, Angela M.
Abstract:
Foreword : In the middle ages, when the catalogue of a library was a hand-list of its manuscripts, the entries were generally minimal: Horae for a Book of hours, or Commentarius in Exodum, a commentary on the Book of exodus. Nothing more. Thus in a medieval catalogue these two items, which are to be found in this book, would have taken two lines! so much more can be said. There was often no information on who wrote the commentary, and certainly it was rarely stated where and when a manuscript was copied out and decorated. It is therefore a serious challenge to determine these elements. as the authors explain, there can also be false trails, as happened with one of ours, where the fifteenth-century prior stated unambiguously that a fine substantial commentary on psalm 118 was by Alexander of Hales and later, the binder, taking a lead from this, stamped the name of the thirteenth-century Franciscan theologian accordingly, in gold on the spine. It was only throu...

The Promise of Untimely Meditations: Reflections on University Education in the Early Twenty-First Century.
(2006)
Hogan, Padraig
Abstract:
Within the last few decades higher education nternationally has become increasingly regarded as a strategic resource for economic and scientific advance. Reference to the 'entrepreneurial university' has become commonplace in public discourse. This is not to say, however, that universities, as places of learning, have become recast tout ensemble as places of production. Were the change as resounding as this, the scope to pursue any teaching and research that was not tied to some economic or social policy imperative would have all but disappeared. The resulting discontent would be difficult to weather by authorities in democratic societies. What has been underway is something more urbane and more intricate than a crass inversion in the purposes of higher learning. Mirroring developments in society more widely, a new utilitarianism, now in a technological key, has been confidently establishing itself as the conventional wisdom of educational policy debates. (EU Commission 19...

Adult and Community Education: A Model for Higher Education?

Adult and Community Education: A Model for Higher Education?
(2006)
Connolly, Brid
Abstract:
Any discussion about the nature and meaning of higher education has to take place in the context of enormous changes in society, probably on the scale of the Industrial Revolution. However, while the Industrial Revolution was driven by the economy as a social institution, with subsequent social and cultural transformations, the knowledge revolution is driven by technology and social change pivoting on democratisation. As a society, we are moving closer to individuation, within community and the social, amid discourses that construct our sense of reality and of our identities. This article will consider the key question for higher education: in what way ought it serve society? For those who defer to market forces, the value will be in terms of laws of economics, profit and loss. However, the meaning and value of higher education is underpinned by a basic ideological stance, if the answer includes priority for fostering places and environments for learning and scholarship in order to ...

The University and Democracy: Habermas, Adult Learning and Learning Society
(2006)

Abstract:
This paper will attempt to articulate an agenda for the university that transcends the reductionist vision of the economic agenda. I write this from the perspective of an adult educator in the university. Adult education as a field of practice provides access routes for 2,000 mature students each year who enrol in modular, credit-bearing courses outside the College. But adult education is also an academic discipline with its philosophy, sociology and psychology, articulated and tested in the world of practice. It borrows from other disciplines and creates its own epistemologies, theories of learning and pedagogical practices. It has answers (even if, like all disciplines, these are provisional and contested) to such questions as, what is an adult? What is adult learning? What is adult education? And what is a university for? - The ideas of Jurgen Habermas will be the starting-point for the discussion of the role of a university, and this paper will attempt to reawaken the notion that ...

Abstract:
The 1960s saw an increasing interest in the education sector in Ireland. The idea that education was crucial to Ireland’s economic development was included in the report entitled Investment in Education which was published in 1965. It is now recognised that most people will engage in some form of learning after completion of secondary school and that for many this may not occur until later in life. Mature students represented 9 per cent of new entrants to higher education in 2016/2017 (Higher Education Authority, 2018). Of that Maynooth University has the highest percentage of mature students in all universities in Ireland. They have a policy of “ensuring that 15% of places for new entrants to first year are available for mature students” (Maynooth University Admissions Office, 2018). In 2012 I commenced my studies in Maynooth University as a mature student, having been out of education for many years. Whilst here I encountered many other mature students who were following their dre...

Abstract:
The Department of Electronic Engineering at Maynooth University, Ireland was established in 1999 and graduated its first cohort of engineers in 2004. In recent years, a number of faculty involved in the undergraduate electronic engineering programme have become interested in the use of problem-based learning in general and specifically in how to most effectively integrate PBL into the programme. We looked in detail at Aalborg University in Denmark where PBL has been used extensively in engineering and science education for over forty years. An engineering professor from Aalborg was invited to Maynooth in November 2011 and facilitated two PBL workshops, one aimed at the entire Maynooth University faculty and one customised specifically to an engineering education context. The following June, three faculty members from the department visited Aalborg University to observe first-hand the so-called Aalborg model which is often referred to in the literature as Project-Oriented Problem Bas...
