The De mixtione elementorum of Thomas Aquinas

The De mixtione elementorum of Thomas Aquinas
(2009)
Loonan, Conleth
Abstract:
In this article Aquinas’s three accounts of how the elements combine – those of Avicenna, Averroës and Aquinas himself – are considered. An attempt is then made to reinterpret these accounts in the light of our contemporary understanding of the manner in which the modern elements behave in combination. This follows Bobik’s lead in restating Aquinas’s own account of how the Aristotelian elements combine, using present-day insights into the behaviour of the modern elements.

Stein's Phenomenology of the Body: The Constitution of the Human Being between Description of Experience and Social Construction
(2009)
Lebech, Mette
Abstract:
Stein’s phenomenology is one that is particularly sensitive to intersubjective constitution, and thus her constitutional analysis of the body is one that allows for an analysis of the body as ‘socially constructed’ (in so far as one understands this term to mean the same as ‘inter-subjectively constituted’). The purpose of this paper is to give an account of Stein’s phenomenology of the body as it appears in On the Problem of Empathy, her constitutional analysis being explicitly articulated in this work as including both subjective and intersubjective layers.

Teaching and Learning in the Summa theologiae of Gerard of Bologna (d. 1317)
(2009)
Nolan, Simon
Abstract:
Gerard of Bologna (d. 1317) was the first Carmelite master at the University of Paris in the Middle Ages. In Quaestio 6, article 1 of his incomplete Summa theologiae, Gerard discusses the issue of teaching and learning. During the course of his discussion he summarises his understanding of the process of cognition in human beings and he considers God, angels and human beings as teachers. Gerard insists on the necessity of the teacher-student relationship in the handing on of human knowledge.

Universality and the Analytic Unity of Apperception in Kant: a reading of CPR B133-4n.
(2009)

Abstract:
I situate historically, analyze, and examine some of the implications of Kant’s thesis that the analytic unity of apperception – the representation of the identity of the I think – is what transforms any representation to which it is attached into a universal (conceptus communis).

Remarks on Ludwig Wittgenstein and Behaviourism
(2009)
Byrne, Susan
Abstract:
Ludwig Wittgenstein’s systematic rejection of cognitive analysis undoubtedly leads one to interpret his work as being fundamentally influenced by behaviourism. However, despite his private language argument, his views on ostensive definition, and his investigation into psychological concepts and psychology as an empirical science, this paper will show that Wittgenstein’s behaviourist influences were both relevant and limited and thus his tentative link to methodological behaviourism should not facilitate any distortion or misrepresentation of his philosophy or be confused with his own assertions as a logical behaviourist.

Specifying Coupling and Cohesion Metrics using OCL and Alloy. Technical Report NUIM-CS-TR-2008-02
(2008)
McQuillan, Jacqueline A.; Power, James F.
Abstract:
This report presents a MOF-compliant metamodel for calculating software metrics and demonstrates how it is used to generate a metrics tool that calculates coupling and cohesion metrics. We also describe a systematic approach to the analysis ofMOF-compliant metamodels and illustrate the approach using the presented metamodel. In this approach, we express the metamodel using UML and OCL and harness existing automated tools in a framework that generates a Java implementation and an Alloy specification of the metamodel, and use this both to examine the metamodel constraints, and to generate instantiations of the metamodel. Moreover, we describe how the approach can be used to generate test data for any software based on a MOF-compliant metamodel. We extend our framework to support this approach and use it to generate a test suite for the metrics calculation tool that is based on our metamodel.

Evaluating Twitter for Use in Environmental Awareness Campaigns
(2009)
Mooney, Peter; Winstanley, Adam C.; Corcoran, Padraig
Abstract:
Many studies have shown that the effective harnessing of ICTs is critical in local, national, and global efforts to adapt and mitigate the effects of climate change. Citizens must be provided with accurate information about environmental issues and should receive this through the most effective communication channels available. In this paper we describe work in progress in evaluating Twitter as a means of distributing environmental information to citizens. This work will attempt to measure how effective the Twitter medium can be in environmental awareness campaigns for issues such as climate change by carrying out an analysis of a regularly updated database of Twitter messages. This work will also look to establish if users are environmental issues through their Twitter networks.

Formally-Reversible Maps of C2
(2011)
O'Farrell, Anthony G.; Zaitsev, Dmitri
Abstract:
An element g of a group is called reversible if it is conjugate in the group to its inverse. This paper is about reversibles in the group G = G2 of formally-invertible pairs of formal power series in two variables, with complex coefficients. The main result is a description of the generic reversible elements of G2. We list two explicit sequences of reversibles which between them represent all the conjugacy classes of such reversibles. We show that each such element is reversible by some element of finite order, and hence is the product of two elements of finite even order. Those elements that may be reversed by an involution are called strongly reversible. We also characterise these. We draw some conclusions about generic reversibles in the group G = G2 of biholomorphic germs in two variables, and about the factorization of formal maps as products of reversibles. Specifically, each product of reversibles reduces to the product of five.

University in Society: Organising for Engagement in Ireland
(2012)
Avila, Maria
Abstract:
In this thesis I look at the implications of replicating the organising practices utilized in the creation of the model of civic engagement at Occidental College in Los Angeles at the National University of Ireland, Maynooth (NUIM). I do this through a case study of NUIM and its role in enhancing democracy in the region and in the Republic of Ireland. I place my study in the larger context of the current global discourse regarding the mission of higher education in society. Furthermore, my research is underpinned by theories and practices from the field of civic engagement. Civic engagement usually refers to partnerships between higher education institutions and their surrounding communities, with the purpose of enhancing university education while contributing to improving the community. This definition of civic engagement in academia is supported by Zlotkowski (1998), McIlrath and Mac Labhrainn (2007), Jacoby (2003), and Ehrlich (2000). While the civic engagement model created at ...

GMMCOVEARN: A Stata Module for GMM Estimation of the Covariance Structure of Earnings.
(2010)
Doris, Aedin; O'Neill, Donal; Sweetman, Olive
Abstract:
This note describes gmmcovearn a user-written Stata package that performs GMM estimation of the covariance structure of earnings for a variety of models. The program decomposes the variance of earnings into a permanent and transitory component using the GMM estimator. The program incorporates both time factor loadings and cohort factor loadings on both the transitory and permanent component, allows the transitory component to follow either an AR or an ARMA process and allows for random heterogeneous growth in the permanent component. The program is used in recent papers by Doris et al (2010a, 2010b).

Incumbent-Quality Advantage and Counterfactual Electoral Stagnation in the U.S. Senate
(2012)
Pastine, Ivan; Pastine, Tuvana; Redmond, Paul
Abstract:
This paper presents a simple statistical exercise to provide a benchmark for the degree of electoral stagnation without direct officeholder benefits or challenger scare-off effects. Here electoral stagnation arises solely due to incumbent-quality advantage where the higher quality candidate wins the election. The simulation is calibrated using the observed drop-out rates in the U.S. Senate. From 1946 to 2010, the observed incumbent reelection rate is 81.7 percent; the benchmark with incumbent-quality advantage alone is able to generate a reelection rate of 78.2 percent. In the sub-sample from 1946 to 1978, the reelection rate from the simulation is almost identical to the observed. The rates diverge in the second part of the sub-sample from 1980 to 2010, possibly indicating an increase in electoral stagnation due to incumbency advantage arising for reasons other than incumbent-quality advantage.

Martin Heidegger's Existential Philosophy
(2007)
Lebech, Mette
Abstract:
The text which is hereby made available in translation originates as a lengthy appendix to Stein's main work Finite and Eternal Being. It was, however, left out of the first edition of this work (1950) and in the reprint of Edith Steins Werke 1 and thus the editors of the Collected Works of Edith Stein likewise left it for a future occasion. The omission has been emended in the new critical edition Edith Steins Gesamtausgabe, 2 and a completed English translation will follow in due course. The essay is divided into four sections, each concerned with one of Heidegger's (until then) published works: Being and Time Kant and the Problem of Metaphysics The Essence of Reasons and What is Metaphysics? About two thirds is taken up with an analysis of Being and Time, again simply divided into an 'Outline of the Argument' and an 'Evaluation'. The latter part addresses three questions: 'What is Dasein'? 'Is the Analysis of Dasein Accurate?' and...

Investability and Firm Value. Department of Economics, Finance & Accounting Working paper series N192/05/08
(2008)
O'Connor, Thomas G.; Mitton, Todd
Abstract:
We study how investability, or openness to foreign equity investors, affects firm value in a sample of over 1,400 firms from 26 emerging markets. We find that, on average, investability is associated with a 9% valuation premium (as measured by Tobins q). However, in firm-fixed effects regressions this valuation premium disappears, suggesting that investability does not have a causal effect on firm value. Analysis of the components of Tobins q shows that firms that become investable experience significant increases in both market values and physical investment. These effects are strongest for firms that face country-level or firm-level financial constraints prior to becoming investable.

Tax uniformity: A commitment device for restraining opportunistic behaviour
(2008)
Dewit, Gerda; Leahy, Dermot
Abstract:
We investigate whether and to what extent uniform and differentiated tax systems diverge in their propensity to create distortionary opportunistic behaviour. The set-up in which we carry out our analysis features polluting firms that are confronted with a Pigovian emission tax. Firms can invest in pollution abatement. We first show that the existence of emission taxes, although optimally chosen, create strategic incentives for firms to distort their abatement investment. Second, we find that a system of differentiated emission taxes has a greater propensity to foster strategic distortions in abatement investment than a uniform emission tax regime.

On the stability of domestic financial market linkages in the presence of time-varying volitility

Abstract:
We analyze the stability of domestic financial linkages between periods of calm and turbulent market conditions. Our model develops a simultaneous test of shift contagion and bi-directional pure contagion, which is applied to the equity and currency markets of a group of East Asian emerging economies. Our results show a great deal of instability in these markets with widespread evidence of pure contagion in both directions. There is less evidence of shift contagion with the transmission of common shocks unchanged between regimes for the majority of countries.

Aggregate Earnings Inequality in Europe: Permanent Differences or Transitory Fluctuations?
(2010)
Doris, Aedin; O'Neill, Donal; Sweetman, Olive
Abstract:
This paper examines the relationship between aggregate inequality and its underlying components for a number of European countries. We use a well established GMM approach to separate the permanent component from the transitory component of earnings inequality. Our results show that three quarters of the observed cross-country differences in aggregate inequality in Europe is accounted for by differences in permanent inequality, reflecting differences in individual characteristics that persist throughout the life-cycle.

External Surveillance of Irish Fiscal Policy During the Boom
(2010)
O'Leary, Jim
Abstract:
The current international financial crisis, greatly amplified by the collapse of a domestic property bubble and construction boom, has caused enormous damage to Ireland’s public finances. Between 2007 and 2009, the general government balance moved from small surplus to a deficit amounting to 14.3% of GDP, while the ratio of gross government debt to GDP rose from 25% to 64%. Did the IMF foresee the crisis? Did it warn about it and, if so, how explicit were those warnings? Did it advise the government on how a crisis might be averted and, if so, did the government ignore that advice? Of course, the IMF is not the only external agency that is charged with the responsibility for carrying out surveillance of Irish fiscal policy. The EC and the OECD are also active in this field. Similar questions can be asked of them.

Abstract:
Problem-based Learning (PBL) has proved itself as a successful teaching and learning environment in the medical field, and has slowly become the preferred teaching and learning method in other disciplines. In this report we look at the learning theories that have influenced PBL and investigate the use of PBL in computer science. We extend the boundaries of PBL and software engineering education with a proposal that fully integrates PBL into a computer science and software engineering degree structure. The objective of this proposal is to produce graduates who can successfully transfer their knowledge and skills into practical situations in new domains.

Abstract:
Perfect Developer is an environment that supports software development by providing a verification of the softwares correctness. Software is constructed with the Perfect language, an Object Oriented programming language that encompasses both specification and implementation features. This paper provides a general overview of the syntax of Perfect, describing a class template for Perfect. The novel features of the language are highlighted to document the uniqueness of Perfect. A small example is developed toward the end of the paper, to illustrate the process of software development on a small scale.

Challenges in modern Distributed Interactive Application design (Technical Report)
(2004)
Marshall, D.; Delaney, D.; McLoone, Seamus; Ward, Tomas E.
Abstract:
This technical report gives an introduction to Distributed Interactive Applications (DIA), including a brief background with some examples. An outline of the three classes of challenges that drive the design of DIA architectures - the users, the physical restrictions, and the required capabilities - is given. The manner in which the designer addresses these challenges, namely dynamic extensibility, scalability, interactibility and interoperability, is explored in detail in terms of the software and network architectures.

Abstract:
Patterns of academic library use and users needs and expectations have been changing in response to developments in education, technology and libraries in general. In line with its strategic plan and taking account of user feedback and statistics, the John Paul II Library reviewed its front-line services in 2007. This article outlines the review process and the implementation of changes that took place as a result.
