Circling Descartes
(2004)
McCauley, Harry
Abstract:
From its initial, pre-publication circulation amongst a group of his contemporaries right up to the present day, Descartesâs Meditations has remained a highly controversial philosophical text. Perhaps the most controversial aspect of the text is whether a circular argument lies at its very heart â a circular argument which would, quite literally, destroy the very edifice of knowledge which Descartes had tried so hard to rebuild upon secure and solid foundations. In this paper I want to have another look at the Cartesian Circle and to argue that, for all the undoubted ingenuity of Descartesâs various responses to the issue, a damaging circle remains in place and, moreover, I shall argue, it is a circle which outruns Descartesâs standard resources for responding to the charge of circularity.

The Censors' Confusion: (Mis)Interpretations of the Works of Alfonso Sastre
(2004)
O'Leary, Catherine
Abstract:
In a survey of theatre censorship in Spain carried out in 1974, Alfonso Sastre stated: 'No existo. He sido borrado de todas las listas... Salvo de las listas negras, por supuesto: por lo que se refiere a estas, estoy en todas. While by then he was percieved by the censors to be an enemy of the regime, it was not always so, as the documents held in the Archivo General de la Administracion in Alcala de Henares show. Alfonso Sastre was certainly more heavily censored than some during his writing career, but not always as much as some of his statements might lead one to believe.Yet there is no denying his position as one of the most committed dramatists in Francoist Spain; in fact that is why it is so surprising to discover that he percieved by some of the censors of his early realist works to be a friend of the regime. The confusion is all the more remarkable when one considers both the censorship legislation in operation at the time, and Sastre's public statements about thea...

Borders, batons locos and barrios: Space as Signifier in Chicano Cinema.
(2004)
Leen, Catherine
Abstract:
Chicano cinema emerged as a tool for social and cultural change at a pivotal moment in both North American and Latin American history. The first Chicano films were screened as the Chicano Movement gained impetus, following the foundation of the Farm Worker Press under the guidance of Cesar Chavez and the establishment of the first Chicano Theatre, El Teatro Campesino, by Luis Valdez in the mid-1960s. In his 1975 essay on the early years of Chicano cinema, Francisco X. Camplis sugggests that a valuable model is provided by Latin American revolutionary cinema. He cites Fernando Solanas and Octavio Getino's Toward a Third Cinema as an important signpost for Chicano filmmakers in its emphasis on creating a counter cultural cinema that represented the experiences of a previously overlooked people.

Camoes, Portuguese war propaganda, and the dream of a safe colonial empire, 1914-1918
(2005)
de Meneses, Filipe Ribeiro
Abstract:
Twentienth-century Portugal's view of itself and its global role was largely determined by the way in which Luis de Camoes was celebrated in Portugal in 1880, the third centenary of his death. This much is made clear by Alan Freeland in his article "The people and the poet: Portuguese national identity and the Camoes Tercentenary'. Those celebrations, largely ignored by the Crown, did much to propel Portuguese republicanism into the twentieth century as a nationalist and colonialist doctrine, committed to the restoration of a Portuguese golden era sung in the cantos of Camoes epic poem, The Lusiads.

Does cross listing in the U.S. really enhance the value of emerging market firms?
(2007)
O'Connor, Thomas .G.
Abstract:
In this paper, I study the valuation effects of cross listing in the U.S. for a panel of emerging market firms over the period from 1990 to 2003. In line with Kristian-Hope et al. (2007), I find that only those firms from high disclosure regimes gain from Level 2/3 listing in the U.S. The gains are not immediate, but materialize once the firm has listed in the U.S. for at least five years. I also document long-term, but not immediate valuation gains for Level 1 over-the-counter issues. In contrast to Level 2/3 issues, the gains are concentrated amongst firms from low-disclosure regimes. I find no positive valuation effects for Rule 144a private placements. The results suggest that the decision on the part of the majority of firms from low-disclosure regimes not to list as exchange traded depositary receipts is warranted.

Methodology: Analysing Qualitative Data and Writing up your Findings
(2006)
Ryan, Anne B.
Abstract:
You have collected data or sourced it in documents. Now that you have it, you need to analyse it in order to produce findings. Much of what we offer in the way of practicalities in this chapter could be characterised as strategies for analysis, rather than shoulds (cf Richardson, 1990: 32). There are, however, some shoulds, such as the need to be sysematic and organised, and to present evidence to back up your findings. We make this clear when we discuss these processes.

Methodology: Collecting Data
(2006)
Ryan, Anne B.
Abstract:
Methodology refers to a 'perspective' of broad theoretically informed approach to research, which stems from the researcher's epistemological stance or philosophical/political position. Methodology is how researchers make their epistemology and theoretical stance work for them in their research. You might, for example, decide that any research you do should be as participatory as possible . You might decide to do action research with a group, whereby the group does research on a problem that it identifies, and in the process, tries to come up with a solution to the problem. By its nature, such a methodology is also participative.

Doing a Review of Literature
(2006)
Ryan, Anne B.
Abstract:
A Literature review is an in-depth examination of the significant material in books, journals and other sources relating to your topic. The aim is to explore what is already known on the topic and to introduce the main thinkers/writers in the area. A review helps you and your readers to acquire an understanding of your topic. It sets the scene for your research, placing your research question in context. The review is therefore a part of your academic development - of becoming expert on your topic. It is usually presented at the beginning of a thesis, after the introduction, and generally takes up about a third to a half of the word allocation of the thesis. In short theses this will probably be just one chapter, but in longer theses, the literature review runs to two, even three chapters. The best way to see how it is done is to look at other theses, which can be consulted in the university library.

Post-Positivist Approaches to Research
(2006)
Ryan, Anne B.
Abstract:
This chapter outlines the philosophical thinking behind this book. Take your time reading it and don't be put off if you encounter words and terms that are unfamiliar to you. These terms will become clearer as you read on. The chapter outlines the background and assumptions for many of the techniques and suggestions put forward in later chapters. Without some knowledge of philosophy or context, technique can become an empty process. Philosophy provides principles that can act as a guide when procedural advice does not address a particular issue. You might like to read this chapter at the start of your thesis process, But it is likely that you will dip into it from time to time, as certain questions arise out of the process of researching and writing the thesis. In this chapter, we briefly examine positivist ideas about research: what they are, where they come from, why they dominate the general view of research and why there is a need to move beyond their limitations. We go on ...

Tax uniformity: A commitment device for restraining opportunistic behaviour
(2008)
Dewit, Gerda; Leahy, Dermot
Abstract:
We investigate whether and to what extent uniform and differentiated tax systems diverge in their propensity to create distortionary opportunistic behaviour. The set-up in which we carry out our analysis features polluting firms that are confronted with a Pigovian emission tax. Firms can invest in pollution abatement. We first show that the existence of emission taxes, although optimally chosen, create strategic incentives for firms to distort their abatement investment. Second, we find that a system of differentiated emission taxes has a greater propensity to foster strategic distortions in abatement investment than a uniform emission tax regime.

On the stability of domestic financial market linkages in the presence of time-varying volitility
(2008)

Abstract:
We analyze the stability of domestic financial linkages between periods of calm and turbulent market conditions. Our model develops a simultaneous test of shift contagion and bi-directional pure contagion, which is applied to the equity and currency markets of a group of East Asian emerging economies. Our results show a great deal of instability in these markets with widespread evidence of pure contagion in both directions. There is less evidence of shift contagion with the transmission of common shocks unchanged between regimes for the majority of countries.

Politician Preferences, Law-Abiding Lobbyists and Caps on Political Lobbying.
(2008)
Pastine, Tuvana; Pastine, Ivan
Abstract:
The effect of a contribution cap is analyzed in a political lobbying game where the politician has a preference for the policy position of one of the lobbyists. In contrast to the previous literature where the politician has no preference over policy alternatives, we find that a more restrictive binding cap always reduces expected aggregate contributions. However, the politician might support a barely binding cap over no cap on contributions. The cap always favors the lobbyist whose policy position is preferred irrespective of the identity of the high-valuation lobbyist. The introduction of politician policy preferences permits an analysis of welfare tradeoffs of contribution caps. Even a barely binding cap can have significant welfare consequences.

Identification of the Covariance Structure of Earnings using the GMM Estimator
(2010)
O'Neill, Donal; Doris, Aedin; Sweetman, Olive
Abstract:
In this paper we study the performance of the GMM estimator in the context of the covariance structure of earnings. Using analytical and Monte Carlo techniques we examine the sensitivity of parameter identification to key features such as panel length, sample size, the degree of persistence of earnings shocks and the evolution of inequality over time. We show that the interaction of transitory persistence with the time pattern of inequality determines identification in these models and offer some practical recommendations that follow from our findings.

Linkages between Excess Currency and Stock Market Returns: Granger Causality in Mean and Variance
(2010)
Syngelaki, Eirini
Abstract:
This paper investigates the causal linkages between monetary and equity market integration of the new member states (NMS) as well as of the non economic monetary union (Non- EMU) member states with the euro zone, after the official launch of the euro. Granger causality in mean and in variance tests are utilized. Our results reveal a number of interesting facts that can be summarized as follows. Firstly, there is little evidence of causality in mean effects for all countries. Secondly, there are significant spill over effects for the NMS. Thirdly, the excess currency return is the chief variable which leads the excess stock market return volatility of the NMS. Our findings have obvious implications for both investors and policy makers.

External Surveillance of Irish Fiscal Policy During the Boom
(2010)
O'Leary, Jim
Abstract:
The current international financial crisis, greatly amplified by the collapse of a domestic property bubble and construction boom, has caused enormous damage to Ireland’s public finances. Between 2007 and 2009, the general government balance moved from small surplus to a deficit amounting to 14.3% of GDP, while the ratio of gross government debt to GDP rose from 25% to 64%. Did the IMF foresee the crisis? Did it warn about it and, if so, how explicit were those warnings? Did it advise the government on how a crisis might be averted and, if so, did the government ignore that advice? Of course, the IMF is not the only external agency that is charged with the responsibility for carrying out surveillance of Irish fiscal policy. The EC and the OECD are also active in this field. Similar questions can be asked of them.

Aggregate Earnings Inequality in Europe: Permanent Differences or Transitory Fluctuations?
(2010)

Abstract:
This paper examines the relationship between aggregate inequality and its underlying components for a number of European countries. We use a well established GMM approach to separate the permanent component from the transitory component of earnings inequality. Our results show that three quarters of the observed cross-country differences in aggregate inequality in Europe is accounted for by differences in permanent inequality, reflecting differences in individual characteristics that persist throughout the life-cycle.

GMMCOVEARN: A Stata Module for GMM Estimation of the Covariance Structure of Earnings.
(2010)

Abstract:
This note describes gmmcovearn a user-written Stata package that performs GMM estimation of the covariance structure of earnings for a variety of models. The program decomposes the variance of earnings into a permanent and transitory component using the GMM estimator. The program incorporates both time factor loadings and cohort factor loadings on both the transitory and permanent component, allows the transitory component to follow either an AR or an ARMA process and allows for random heterogeneous growth in the permanent component. The program is used in recent papers by Doris et al (2010a, 2010b).

Sliding Doors Cost Measurement A Restrictive Approach to Analyzing the Net Economic Cost of Policy Decisions
(2010)
Connor, Gregory; Kelly, Brian
Abstract:
This paper develops a restrictive procedure for evaluating economic policy decisions, by comparing actual economic history to a simulated history where a specific policy decision is replaced with a counterfactual, but credible, alternative. Our procedure is theoretically straightforward, but empirically problematic since it requires the identification of a feasible policy alternative and a model linking a specific policy choice to subsequent economic outcomes. We apply the procedure to the mistaken decision to maintain an excessively lax financial regulation regime in Ireland during the period 2003 – 2008. We measure the differences in banking sector stability and national income that would have occurred if the stricter regulatory regime imposed in Ireland in 2009 had been put in place six years earlier. We find that a few simple, reasonably prudent regulatory controls on the Irish banking sector would have greatly limited the vulnerability of the domestic sector to the 2008 global ...

Abstract:
Recent decades have seen a sea change in the study of religion in Ireland. Numerically dominated by theology until very recently – to the extent that Ireland is one of only two European countries without an association for the non-confessional study of religion – the quantitative decline in academic theology, the generational change of staff, the merging of seminaries and the increasingly lay character of their students are all pointing towards a gradual transformation into departments of religious studies, following the experience of other Northern countries.

The Development of Quasi-Optical Techniques for Log Wavelength Imaging
(2008)
May, Robert K.
Abstract:
This thesis concerns the development of quasi-optical techniques for long-wavelength imaging, which was conducted through a combination of experimentation and computer simulation. This work was conducted as part of a SFI-funded research program undertaken by the THz Optics group of the Department of Experimental Physics at NUI Maynooth, the aim of which was to extend existing quasi-optical techniques through experimental measurements and the development of simulation tools necessary for efficient design and analysis of long-wavelength optical systems. Description of the upgrading of the 100 GHz test measurement facilities at NUIM and the results obtained from transmission- and reflection-mode active imaging experiments are presented. Numerical simulation of quasi-optical components and systems using scalar wave diffraction techniques was performed. In particular, Gaussian Beam Mode Analysis (GBMA) was applied to the design and analysis of discrete and continuous phase modulating opt...

Abstract:
We show that Mach bands and a number of other low-level brightness illusions can be accounted for by assuming that the perceptual system performs simple Bayesian inference using a Gaussian image prior with noisy retinal gangion cells. This theory accounts for phenomena which have proven problematic for simple energy-based and lateral-interaction models while avoiding the complexities of mid-level vision theories that involve the estimation of structure and albedo.
