Abstract:
THESIS 5612.1
THESIS 5612.2
One of the aims of this thesis is to produce a translated and annotated text of twelve poems attributed to the eleventh-century poet, Flann Manistrech (+1056) from the Book of Leinster (Trinity College Dublin), a manuscript dating from the mid-twelfth century. A diplomatic edition of all of these poems exists, and ten have also been translated before -- nine into English, and one into German. Note that this thesis does not intend to provide a definitive edition of these texts. Another important concern is to give an extensive analysis of the metrical and linguistic features of these poems. Finally, an attempt is made to compare the language of these poems with one another and with Saltair na Rann.

Abstract:
THESIS 9772
This thesis discusses military motifs and images found in the corpus of Classical Irish poetry, composed between c. 1200 and c. 1650. Extensive use is made of examples from the strictest syllabic metre in Classical Irish poetry, d?n d?reach, taken from published Poem-books, or duanair?, or from manuscript sources, as well as poems only recently made available with the publishing of A Bardic Miscellany, which were hitherto only available on the Irish Bardic Poetry Database compiled by Trinity College Dublin?s Department of Irish. Poems in other syllabic metres, such as ?gl?chas or br?ilingeacht, are also used, as are prose or historical works from the period to clarify the use of certain motifs.

Abstract:
THESIS 2566
The findings presented in the thesis are based on research carried out at Trinity College, Dublin, in the Department of Modem History under the supervision of Dr. David Dickson from August 1989 to September 1992. The aim of the study was to undertake a quantitative and qualitative study of crime, the police and justice in Dublin in the eighteenth century. The first step was to uncover a source that would most closely approximate contemporary crime reports and court records (the 1922 fire at the Public Record Office in Dublin destroyed such records). Several sources were examined and rejected before a satisfactory one was obtained. This was the Hibernian Journal, a legal-minded newspaper which was published three times a week in Dublin.

Abstract:
THESIS 10527
This thesis is a thematic historical study of the employment of women on full-time police duty in pre-independent and independent Ireland. It is the product of independent, academic research, conducted under the supervision of members of the Centre for Contemporary Irish History, Trinity College, Dublin, in which full editorial autonomy has been retained by the researcher. This thesis is based on empirical historical research of original materials and published sources, as outlined in the bibliography. The research has been predominantly based on documentary materials, but has also included a number of interviews by the researcher which have been summarised in the bibliography, also informed the research.

Evolution of the OmpR regulon in Salmonella enterica serovar Typhimurium and Escherichia coli in response to low pH
(2013)
Quinn, Heather J.
Abstract:
THESIS 9988
Two-component systems (TCS) enable bacteria to sense, respond and adapt to a wide range of environmental stimuli. The OmpR/EnvZ TCS is composed of the inner membrane sensor kinase EnvZ and the response regulator OmpR. In Escherichia coli (E. coli) EnvZ is stimulated by changes in osmotic pressure; EnvZ phosphorylates the transcription factor OmpR, which differentially expresses the outer membrane porins ompF and ompC. Comparatively, the orthologous OmpR/EnvZ TCS in Salmonella enterica serovar Typhimurium (S. Typhimurium) does not respond to osmolarity. Instead, studies have shown the ompR gene is activated by low pH and is essential for the expression of pathogenicity genes. These findings raised the question does ompR in E. coli respond to low pH?

Degrees of freedom : punishment, personal life and place in Dublin's North Inner City
(2010)
Breen, Jessica D.
Abstract:
THESIS 9205
This thesis presents the findings of a four year research project exploring the experience and meaning of punishment in Dublin?s North Inner City, a place which is home to many ex-prisoners as well as current prisoners serving sentences in a number of prisons. The aim of this thesis is to describe and understand the role of punishment as a social institution in the personal and social lives of those living in this area. This thesis draws on several intellectual traditions within sociology, primarily the sociology of punishment, along with strands of the sociologies of personal life and place. It argues that within the sociology of punishment there is much to be gained by studying understandings of punishment intensively and in context. This thesis aims to provide a theoretically nuanced and empirically rich account of the various ways in which punishment operates in everyday life; it does this by taking a micro-approach to the macro-realities of socio-economic segreg...

Recognition of abnormal thermal histories of Jurassic source rocks from integrated analyses of vitrinite reflectance and organic matter colour / fluorescence
(2002)
McCaughan, Gerard A.
Abstract:
THESIS 7071
By investigating three sedimentary horizons through the aureole of a Tertiary dyke intruding a Middle Jurassic sedimentary section in NE Skye, the thermal response rates of the various organic maturity indicators to short-term high temperature heating events were evaluated. A detailed assessment was conducted, of the reaction of vitrinite reflectance (VR), kerogen colour and fluorescence, to the short-lived high temperatures associated with the dyke. Image analysis (lA) techniques were applied to develop a new system for vitrinite reflectance measurement at Trinity College Dublin. Vitrinite reflectance shows a marked reaction to the high temperatures close to the dyke. Within a zone equivalent to ca. 50% dyke thickness (d.t.), rank changes from the high-volatile bituminous (0.72-0.79% Rr) through medium volatile bituminous, low volatile bituminous, semi-anthracite to anthracite (3.1-3.6% Rr) are observed. Reflectance reversals, previously reported adjacent to igneous...

Abstract:
THESIS 10245
The methods used in this thesis were primarily literature-based involving a review of relevant international and national jurisprudence relating to international human rights law, constitutional law, administrative law and the law of tort. Also reviewed was the literature covering these disparate areas, core texts, interpretative comments, commentaries, opinions, theories and responses of commentators. Areas covered include philosophy, jurisprudence, law, medicine, social science and international relations. Most of the research was conducted in Trinity College Dublin and through its extensive on-line electronic catalogues. Some of the research was conducted at the Bodelian Law Library, Oxford University, England. Having worked in the area of human rights for a number of years, the purpose of undertaking the research was to deepen my academic expertise in the field. The research question in this thesis is whether the right to health, as set out under international h...

Kafka, Beckett, Onetti - a poetics of existential estrangement : notes towards the definition of a subgenre
(2002)
Butler, David
Abstract:
THESIS 6658
The following thesis was researched and written during the period October 1998 to September 2001 at Trinity College, Dublin. It originated as an investigation into the adequacy of the term 'existentialist' as applied to the writing of Juan Carlos Onetti. Two field bursaries made it possible to visit Universities and National Libraries in Madrid, Montevideo and Buenos Aires so as to ensure the originality of the work. The thesis compares the ontology underlying characterisation in Onetti's work with that of both Kafka and Beckett. A main finding is that while all three are phenomenologically informed, all radically defamiliarise, and indeed distort, the main dimensions of such an ontology. Four chief parameters or dimensions of this estranged ontology are identified: temporality; spatiality; language and embodiment. Each is given a full chapter in which an aesthetic of 'existential estrangement' common to Kafka, Beckett and Onetti is posited. ...

Facts or Fiction? : the Church of Ireland's writting of Irish church history 1838-1870

Abstract:
THESIS 10856
This thesis explores a central, but curiously neglected dimension of the cultural and intellectual history of Ireland in the nineteenth century. It addresses the systematic attempt by a group of scholars and academics, largely based in Trinity College, Dublin, to re-write the history of the Irish Church. Their preoccupation with the historical origins of their Church was shared with English Episcopalians. In both cases, academics and theologians sought justification for the birth of their respective Reformed branches of Christianity.

Abstract:
THESIS 10457.1
THESIS 10457.2
This thesis sets out to develop and evaluate speech synthesis-based computer-assisted language learning (CALL) platforms. Central to this work is the evaluation of the fitness- for-purpose, as part of a language teaching/learning facility, of the text-to-speech (TTS) Irish language synthesis system that these platforms employ. The TTS system in question has been developed by the ABAIR project at Trinity College, Dublin and is being extended and improved on an ongoing basis.

Experimental investigations of driven pile group behaviour in Belfast soft clay
(2002)
McCabe, Bryan A. M.
Abstract:
THESIS 6915
In 1996, a site adjacent to Kinnegar Sewage Treatment Plant, near Belfast, was made available (by the Northern Ireland Department of the Environment) to Trinity College Dublin to perform load tests on driven piles. Since 1997, investigations at Kinnegar have included lateral load tests on single piles (Phillips 2002) and vertical load tests (both static and cyclic) on single piles and small pile groups (reported in this Thesis). Extensive site investigation data has also been assimilated over this period. Vertical load tests were carried out single reference piles and groups of five piles (centre to corner spacing of s/B=3). Each precast concrete driven pile was 250mm square and with an embedded length of 6m, much of its load was carried in shaft friction. Some of these piles contained internal instruments allowing load distributions and horizontal total stresses to be estimated. Slow static load tests (in tension and compression, for single piles and groups) were of...

McCarthy, Orla Th?r?se
Abstract:
THESIS 10622
This thesis reports the results of research which examined the potential use of new security technologies in the setting of public transport. The research aimed to consider both the security and privacy implications of new security technologies, specifically CCTV with event detection, alerts, and route reconstruction, as well as a personal safety smartphone app. Interviews and technology demonstrations regarding the CCTV technologies were conducted with employees of two transport organisations, SEA and Renfe Operadora. These organisations were members (along with Trinity College Dublin) of the project consortium on the ADDPRIV (Automatic Data relevancy Discrimination for a PRIVacy-sensitive video surveillance) 7th framework programme (FP7) project, which was developing the ADDPRFV CCTV system with event detection, alert and route reconstruction features.

Developing English language support for immigrant students in Irish post-primary schools : a corpus linguistics approach
(2012)
Kostopoulou, Stergiani
Abstract:
THESIS 9620.1
THESIS 9620.2
The present research was conducted as part of the English Language Support Programme (ELSP) of the Trinity immigration Initiative (2007-2010), Trinity College Dublin (TCD). The aim of the ELSP was to investigate and enhance the provision of English language support for immigrant students in Irish post-primary schools. In line with the scope of the ELSP, the present research has two aims. First, it sets out to analyse the language of post-primary subject textbooks and examination papers in order to understand the demands that curriculum language makes of immigrant students. Secondly, it explores the pedagogical implications of the findings of this linguistic analysis and their application in post-primary English language support.

Confronting long-term unemployment through social entrepreneurship : an action research study
(2004)
Nolan, Patrick
Abstract:
THESIS 8051
This thesis emerges from the action-learning M.Sc which was completed at Trinity College, Dublin six years ago (Nolan, 1997). Through that thesis, and the associated learning processes of the programme, a concept was developed for the creation and structure of an organisation using the practice of social entrepreneurship to confront long-term unemployment in Dublin. Following a year of further examination, reflection and work, that project was launched by the Taoiseach, Mr. Bertie Ahern TD, in March 1999. The project has been successful in training and placing in employment many previously long-term unemployed persons from disadvantaged communities in the Dublin region.

Abstract:
THESIS 9647
The Discipline of Occupational Therapy in collaboration with the Disability Service in Trinity College established a support service entitled UNILINK in 2003. This service was developed in direct response to an increasing student population who were experiencing mental health problems from 11 in 2001 to 30 in 2003 (Disability Annual Report 2006). As part of the client centred service development a new instrument was designed to capture and profile the difficulties students with mental health problems were experiencing so that their needs could be met. This instrument was called - The Trinity Student Profile (TSP).

A linguistic analysis of old Irish hymns in the Liber Hymnorum
(2008)
Doherty, James
Abstract:
THESIS 8458
The Liber Hymnorum (Book of Hymns) is a document containing hymns that were sung in early Irish monasteries in the seventh, eighth and ninth centuries. The Liber Hymnorum is preserved in two manuscripts: Trinity College Dublin?s catalogue T. 1441, dated to the late 11th century, and the Franciscan catalogue A2, dated to the early 12th century. The Trinity and Franciscan texts seem to be independent recensions of a lost exemplar, which is thought to have been written in the late tenth century. The majority of the hymns in the collection are composed in Hiberno-Latin, but there are seven hymns in the native vernacular from the Old Irish period (700-900AD). The hymns, both those in Latin and in Irish, are supported by Middle Irish prefaces, interlinear glosses and lengthy scholia written in the margins.

Abstract:
THESIS 5427
This thesis is based on 4 papers resulting from my work during my stay in the School of Mathematics, Trinity College Dublin. Each of them forms an individual part of the thesis. The relation between these parts is emphasized throughout the thesis. The last, fifth, part is based on a somewhat exercise in operator formalism in Chern -Simons theory where I show, by analysis based on theta-functions, that the co-efficient nuist be even.

Abstract:
THESIS 11064
Burkitt's lymphoma is an aggressive non-Hodgkin lymphoma occurring with high incidence in developing areas such as equatorial Africa and Papua New Guinea. Within these tropical regions of high incidence (40-50 per 10 6), Burkitt's lymphoma accounts for approximately 50% of childhood cancers and up to 90% of childhood lymphomas diagnosed. The treatment of Burkitt's lymphoma in these regions is insufficient and the development of new, safe and cost effective therapeutics are of current interest. Previous work within the Meegan and Williams groups in Trinity College Dublin identified a potent apoptotic effect induced by the (E)-1,3-bis(aryl)-2-nitro-1-propenes and the tetracyclic antidepressant maprotiline in Burkitt's lymphoma cell lines (MUTU-I and DG-75).

The transcriptomic analysis of low pH and bile acid induced gene expression in oesophageal cells
(2006)
Duggan, Shane
Abstract:
THESIS 7956
Oesophageal adenocarcinoma (OAC) commonly arises from the presence of a premalignant lesion known as Barrett?s Oesophagus (BO). Gastro-oesophageal reflux disease (GORD) has been identified in epidemiological studies as a major risk factor in the pathogenesis of oesophageal adenocarcinoma. The major constituents of the refluxate in GORD and BO are gastric acid and bile acids such as deoxycholate (DCA). However, the impact of low pH and bile acids on gene expression has not been extensively studied in oesophageal cells. Global changes in gene and cytokine expression in response to these putative oesophageal carcinogens was examined. A transcriptomic method in conjunction with novel promoter bioinformatics was employed to assess gene induction in response to low pH and DCA exposure. The findings of this thesis provide further understanding of the role of low pH and DCA in the development and progression of OAC through the activation of cell specific transcriptional and ...

Pharmaceutical stability and prodrug studies on the antidepressant bupropion
(2010)

Abstract:
THESIS 9276
This thesis describes the work carried out at the School of Pharmacy and Pharmaceutical Sciences, Trinity College on the pharmaceutical stability and prodrug studies on the antidepressant bupropion. Chapter 1 gives an overview of bupropion, discussing its therapeutic uses, pharmacokinetics, adverse effects and pharmacology. The prodrug concept is introduced with particular reference to central nervous system brain delivery and prodrug options relating to these types. Prodrugs of bupropion would be advantageous to improve its stability and side-effect profile. Chapter 2 addresses the aqueous stability of bupropion with particular emphasis on the kinetics of degradation. The pH rate profile of bupropion shows instability above pH 5 and this problem can be addressed by prodrug design.

The effect of prestress force magnitude and eccentricity on natural bending frequencies of prestressed concrete structures

Abstract:
THESIS 11098
The effect of prestress force magnitude on the natural bending frequencies of prestressed concrete structures is something widely debated in literature to date. It has major implications for the dynamic design and accurate analysis of such structures, as accurate knowledge of the modal properties of structures is a vital part of accurate prediction modelling and safe dynamic design. This Ph.D. thesis outlines the work carried out between September 2012 and August 2015 on a research project investigating how the application of a prestress force affects the dynamic properties of prestressed concrete structures. Steel and concrete test specimens have been tested both statically and dynamically to determine the change in their flexural/bending stiffness according to the application of both external axial loads and posttensioning loads to the sections. A new simple linear mathematical model predicting changes in natural frequency with increasing post-tensioning load magn...
