Utilisation of electronic fare collection data of urban bus operators with regard to transfer journeys and origin / destination estimation
(2008)

Abstract:
THESIS 8635
The understanding of an urban public transport network from an operational point of view and the understanding of passenger?s travel patterns become increasingly important due to the growing complexity of most networks. Large cities heavily depend on their public transport networks as urbanisation vastly increases. One way of obtaining more factual knowledge of network?s performance measures and passenger travel patterns is to analyse Electronic Fare Collection (EFC) data which are recorded when buying or validating tickets. Dublin?s main urban bus operator, Dublin Bus, records trip level data from passengers that use a ticket that is valid for a period of time. Such tickets have a unique identifier for the validity period which allows to analyse travel paths of individual passengers. Over 45 million individual passenger boardings were recorded over a two year period.

Modelling the impact of traffic emissions on local air quality
(2008)
Ganguly, Rajiv
Abstract:
THESIS 8599
Air quality modelling can be used to complement monitoring networks and to obtain information at lower cost. A primary advantage of modelling is that it can be used for the prediction of future air quality, which often forms an important part of Environmental Impact Assessment (EIA) studies. The research described in this thesis represents an in - depth atmospheric dispersion modelling study carried out at highway and street canyon locations in the Dublin area for the pollutants CO, NOx and NO2. In this context, appropriate dispersion models GFLSM and CALINE4 for highways and STREET and OSPM models were studied and validated for local conditions.

Application of time-series and wavelet analysis for traffic flow modelling and incident detection
(2007)
Ghosh, Bidisha
Abstract:
THESIS 8184
Efficient and sustainable use of existing transportation network has become a major issue in socio-economic growth of the developed parts of today?s world. Intelligent Transportation System (ITS) is an important tool to increase the sustainability and efficiency of an existing traffic management system. Implementation of ITS in an existing transport network requires the use of efficient short-term traffic condition (such as, traffic flow, density or speed) forecasting and incident detection algorithms. In the present study, univariate and multivariate traffic flow modelling and incident detection techniques applicable to ITS equipped urban traffic control (UTC) systems are proposed. The proposed models are validated at single or multiple junctions within the congested urban transport network at the city-centre of Dublin.

George Reavey (1907-1976) : The endless chain, a literary biography
(2006)
O'Connell, Sandra Andrea
Abstract:
THESIS 7783
George Reavey (1907-1976) was an experimental poet, an enterprising publisher and literary agent and an esteemed critic and translator of Russian literature. His literary beginnings can be traced back to Cambridge, where he was a central part of group that looked beyond the tranquil college greens for new influences and inspirations. The group embraced international Modernism, which found expression in the magazine Experiment which they edited. For the next decade, following his graduation in English (BA Hons.) from Cambridge in 1929, Reavey became closely linked with the Modern movement. In Paris, in the early thirties, he started a literary agency, placing French authors with English publishers and gaining opportunities for English-language writers abroad. His greatest achievement was to secure the publication of Samuel Beckett?s novel Murphy by Routledge, a work perceived as difficult and turned down by over forty publishers. In the mid 1930s, he emerged within a ...

Abstract:
THESIS 7704
The research completed represents an experimental investigation of atmospheric hydrocarbon concentrations in the Dublin area, of which very little reported data were previously available. There was a notable lack of short-term measurements, which are useful in source apportioning and investigating the behaviour and trends of ambient hydrocarbon concentrations.

Lessons learned from the integration of Strategic Environmental Assessment with transport planning in Athens, Dublin and London

Abstract:
THESIS 6673
Strategic Environmental Assessment (SEA) refers to the identification and evaluation of the positive and negative effects of actions at a higher decision making level than development projects such as programmes, plans and policies (PPPs). Its usefulness lies in its ability to aid decision making, enhance the effectiveness of project environmental assessment and ultimately contribute towards Sustainable Development. It is for these characteristics that the concept is currently the subject of a European Union draft Directive 'on the assessment of the effects of certain plans and programmes on the environment' [96/0304 (COD)] or SEA Directive.

Abstract:
THESIS 7081
This thesis represents a comprehensive attempt to address the dearth of research on relationships between environment and mental health. The aim is to present a novel theoretical and empirical investigation of the links between environmental values, perceived environmental quality and psychological well-being. Across seven chapters we have endeavoured to tell this story, by weaving together strands from the pertinent literature and unravelling meaning from responses to more than one thousand questionnaires. Multiple levels of design and analysis were employed to examine existing and new theoretical propositions. Survey methods were employed, in three separate studies, to collect cross-sectional and longitudinal data from young people attending academic institutions in Dublin. Sampling included convenience and matched group methods. Aspects of the third study involved field research on an experiential education program for ecology and enterprise. Following schematic r...

THESIS 10139.2
Broadly speaking, this thesis has demonstrated that as a category facsimiles of Irish archaeological jewellery and metalwork are not merely derivative works, but have aesthetic and cultural value worthy of a devoted study. The first chapter focused on the key commercial firms, institutions, artefacts and manufacturing processes associated with the production of facsimiles in Dublin.

Crown and community on the royal manors of the Liffey valley
(2010)
Foley, Ann
Abstract:
THESIS 9027
This thesis investigates the relationship between the English crown and the four royal manors of Crumlin, Esker, Saggart and Newcastle Lyons in the later Middle Ages. These manors were situated in south County Dublin and were established after these lands passed out of the hands of the Meic Gilla Mo-Cholm?c sometime before 1215. The two largest manors, Saggart and Newcastle Lyons, were closer to the mountains than Crumlin and Esker and were therefore more vulnerable. Yet because they were larger they could also potentially yield the most revenue. As the Middle Ages progressed they became increasingly important as they formed part of the line of defence against the Irish in the mountains. The two smaller manors of Crumlin and Esker were closer to the city and were for that reason better able to maintain their value.

Segmental and intonational analysis of Drogheda English
(2011)
Kalaldeh, Raya Ali
Abstract:
THESIS 9110
This study is concerned with describing the variety of English used in Drogheda, the main town in the North-East of Ireland. The town of Drogheda is approximately 35 miles away from the capital city, Dublin. It also lies within the linguistic boundary zone that separates the two major Irish English varieties: Northern Irish English and Southern Irish English. The study presents a detailed descriptive analysis of the variety?s segmental system including both the vocalic and the consonantal system. A particular emphasis is on the intonational aspects of this variety. Dialectal studies in intonation are increasingly attracting interest and contributing to our understanding of how the intonation system of a language works. In the first part of the study I carry out acoustic and auditory analysis on the speech of local informants from Drogheda to investigate vocalic and consonantal realizations. The findings suggest that Drogheda English has typical Southern segmental fea...

Investigation of herbicide-based compounds as novel anti-malarial agents
(2010)
Dempsey, Enda
Abstract:
THESIS 8988
Plasmodium falciparum causes the most severe form of malaria in humans. Currently, no effective vaccine exists and the emergence of widespread drug resistance in the parasite has further increased the necessity for novel therapeutics to be discovered. Microtubules are cytoskeletal polymers which consist mainly of repeating a/?- tubulin heterodimers and play crucial roles in almost all eukaryotic cells. These polymers have the ability to rapidly elongate and shorten. Inhibition of this dynamic behaviour has been successftilly exploited in the past to generate potent fungicides, herbicides, anti-parasitics and anti-cancer therapeutics. For Plasmodium, two groups of chemically distinct herbicides, the dinitroanilines and the phosphorothioamidates, were previously identified as being potentially useful antimalarial agents. To improve the activity of these herbicides for Plasmodium, a library of amiprophosmethyl- related compounds were generated by collaborators in the Ro...

Humanisation, generativity and acculturation in the secondary school : a guidance and counselling perspective
(2013)
Davis, John B.
Abstract:
THESIS 10119
The primary goal of this study is to investigate how relevant a pedagogical and counselling approach inspired by the work of Paulo Freire is to the experiences and understandings of the young people who attend a secondary school in Dublin. Specifically, the aims were i) to generate a Freirean based theory to guide thinking and practice in teaching and counselling; and ii) to apply the knowledge gained to formulate ideas about an ethical and philosophical grounding and language for understanding the broader aims of education. An extensive literature review of cultural, historical and social contexts of the study and of the life and work of Paulo Freire was undertaken to generate key ideas for practice in the tradition of Freirean pedagogy. Insights elicited from the work of Erik H. Erikson provided an identity based psychosocial and developmental perspective which relates favourably with Freire?s key concepts.

A methodology for assessing the load capacity of cantilevered stone stairs
(2012)
Bashorun, Oluwakemi
Abstract:
THESIS 9718
Cantilevered stone stairs were widely constructed from the 17th to the 20th century. Thousands of these stairs were built in Ireland and across Europe during this period and they have proven to be very robust. However, the recent collapse of a flight of cantilevered stone stairs in the Natural History Museum in Dublin shows that they can fail. The majority of cantilevered stone stairs do not cantilever; each tread in a cantilevered stone stairs transfers the load applied to it to the wall support and to the tread below. The predominant resulting force developed within the tread is a torque. Cantilevered stone stairs are highly statically indeterminate which complicates their analysis. In addition, the stone used in their construction is a natural and often highly variable material.

Indoor/outdoor air quality relationship in urban commercial buildings
(2013)
Challoner, Avril
Abstract:
THESIS 9991
The United Nations urban environmental unit associates up to 1 million premature deaths annually to urban air pollution (United Nations Environment Programme, 2010). Much research on indoor environments has focused on residential buildings with commercial buildings being often overlooked. This research project aimed to improve the understanding of the Indoor/Outdoor air quality relationship at urban commercial buildings in Dublin, Ireland. In order to gain the required understanding, data was required for Dublin sites, therefore monitoring was conducted. Real-time concentrations of PM2.5 and NO2 were recorded at 10 commercial buildings (including shops, offices and gallery spaces) all located in heavily trafficked parts of the city centre.

Urban freight in Dublin : an integrated policy framework for sustainable distribution
(2010)
Finnegan, Clare
Abstract:
THESIS 9011
Urban goods movement is essential to life in a city. Every product and service we avail of must be transported from where it is sourced to where it is sold. At a wider level, urban freight transport is the engine driving economic activity. Retail trade and industry are dependent on a timely and reliable goods distribution system. However, although urban goods transport is vital in supporting economic development, it also has unsustainable impacts for the environment, for the economy and also for society. There are two key features of urban freight research, which influence this thesis. Firstly, the limited amount of urban freight data available has made it difficult for European cities to devise policies that are grounded in what is actually happening in reality. Secondly, analysis of urban freight has tended to occur in isolation of other transport policies.

An investigation of natural and anthropogenic factors influencing species richness and distribution in woodland & hedgerow habitats of north county Dublin
(2011)
McCourt, Shawn C.
Abstract:
THESIS 9558
In Ireland, hedgerows are estimated to cover an area roughly 2-3 times that of deciduous woodland on an island-wide basis (Webb 1985); however, to date, the processes involved in the formation of hedgerow plant communities remains poorly understood. It is generally assumed that hedgerows are linear strips of woodland and they have been advocated as potential surrogate habitat for forest species in other fragmented agricultural landscapes, especially in North America (Corbitt et al. 1999) and elsewhere in western and central Europe (Baudry et al. 2000, Wehling & Diekmann 2009).

The Albert Bender donations of Far Eastern Art to the National Museum of Ireland in the context of his cultural interests in Ireland and California
(2010)
Whitty, Audrey
Abstract:
THESIS 9371
The National Museum of Ireland (formerly the Dublin Science and Art Museum) was founded in 1877. During the late nineteenth/early twentieth century policy dictated that the acquisition of applied/industrial arts be nationally as well as internationally based. As a result many objects of Asian provenance came under museum control. This policy changed on Irish Independance, but one notable donor during the early years of the Irish Free State was the Irish-born, San Francisco millionaire, Albert Maurice Bender (1866-1941) who donated 260 objects of Asian art from 1931 to 1936. This collection includes twenty -one rare eighteenth century? Tibetan-Buddhist Thangka paintings and over eighty Japanese woodblock prints from the eighteenth and nineteenth centuries. Bender?s Jewish faith and Irish patriotism are examined in the context of his collecting activities, his generous benefaction of contemporary avant-garde art on the west coast of the United States and extensive bibl...

Abstract:
THESIS 9522
This is a study of state perceptions of subversion in Ireland before and during the Northern Ireland Troubles. The thesis explores the international dimension to the Troubles in the context of the Cold War and the evolution of a left-wing strand in Irish republicanism which aligned itself with the Soviet Union. As the Irish Republican Army (IRA) leadership attempted to explore political avenues to secure support for its revolutionary agenda, the nature of its strategy was analysed in Belfast, Dublin and London. The thesis mainly draws on archival records to assess the responses of the British, Irish and Northern Ireland governments to a subversive threat in both jurisdictions in Ireland. This study discusses strains that developed in Anglo-Irish relations as the Troubles unfolded from 1968 and the ?special relationship? between the United Kingdom (UK) and the United States (US) as it related to British security measures in Northern Ireland. The thesis also raises the...

The Tithe War in Ireland, 1830-1838

Abstract:
THESIS 9992
The arguments and narrative contained in this thesis were mainly constructed from a detailed examination of four broad categories of primary sources. Firstly, it was necessary to research the mass of state paper material generated by the Dublin Castle administration in the years between 1830 and 1838. The state papers contain the most important manuscript material relating to the Tithe War, and their extent, variety, veracity and pertinence meant that their comprehensive reading, assessment and forensic examination forms the basis of the arguments contained in this thesis. Parliamentary Papers proved to be a second set of invaluable sources in providing information relative to, and perspectives on, the Tithe War.

A clinical and microbiological investigation of peri-implant infections
(2014)
Maguire, Fergal Rory
Abstract:
THESIS 10441
Osseointegrated oral implants are becoming increasingly more common in restorative dentistry as permanent replacements for lost or missing teeth. Peri-implant infections are a significant area of treatment need but the current evidence base for treatment is low. Peri-implant and periodontal infections share many similarities including clinical and pathological features and both have a microbial aetiology. There is growing evidence that patients with an increased susceptibility to periodontal disease have an increased susceptibility to peri-implantitis, very likely associated with oral bacterial microflora dynamics. The present study was undertaken to further investigate clinical and microbial aspects of peri-implantitis and periodontitis in a cohort of patients attending the Dublin Dental Unversity Hospital.

Enternal nutrition in the community setting

Abstract:
THESIS 6175
The practice of tube feeding patients outside the acute hospital setting has existed in Ireland for over a decade. Anecdotal evidence (mainly from hospital dietitians) suggested that the care services for these patients were inadequate and the subject of home enteral tube feeding required examination. A small pilot survey of patients on tube feeding in nursing homes in Dublin suggested that there was a lack of co-ordination and organisation of the practice of community-based enteral tube feeding. The aim of this work was to investigate enteral tube feeding in Dublin in the community setting from the perspective of patients? and the health care professions.

An analysis of cycling safety perceptions and development of a bicycle trip assignment methodology

Abstract:
THESIS 10666
This thesis reports the outcome of research on the development of an alternative method to modelling the assignment of bicycle trips in multi-modal networks. The proposed methodology considers the effects of safety (or inversely risk) on cyclists? route choice behaviours. In developing this methodology, a survey and monitoring study of cyclists was conducted in order to gain greater understanding of cyclists? safety perceptions, behaviours and network interactions. Based on the findings of the survey analysis a number of policy recommendations are also presented that offer insight into cycling and safety for transport planners and pohcymakers. Dublin city was used as the study area for this research.
