Human rights law and constitutional biolaw : a coherentist investigation into dignity, personhood and rights
(2014)
Finegan, Thomas
Abstract:
THESIS 10752
I made extensive use of Trinity College Library, including its older collections and inter- library loan service. Electronic journal databases were invaluable. Researching US constitutional case law was an exercise in logistics and cultivating the virtue of patience. I communicated directly with a couple of important figures, most especially Habib Malik, the son of Charles Malik, probably the most important, direct philosophical influence on the Universal Declaration of Human Rights. Some of the research undertaken has unearthed material hitherto either relatively or wholly overlooked in published writings (as far as I can tell, at any rate). This includes aspects of the drafting of various international human rights law texts, the bioethical writings of what are labelled the ?founding forefathers? of US natural rights constitutionalism, and elements of the drafting of the Irish Constitution. As for the major findings, very briefly, there is a sharp cleavage betwee...

Abstract:
THESIS 6856
A History of Kilkenny College, 1538 -1903: A study of the vicissitudes of a privately endowed grammar school in Ireland. This thesis examines the history of Kilkenny College, Ireland's oldest grammar school, from its foundation in 1538 until the management of the College was taken over by the Incorporated Society for the Promotion of Protestant Schools in Ireland in 1903. The philosopher George Berkeley, the writer Jonathan Swift and the dramatist William Congreve are some of the College's notable former pupils. Chapter One examines the establishment of the College by the earl and countess of Ormond until its closure in 1566. In doing so the Ormonds were continuing in a tradition of education which had existed in Kilkermy since monastic times and the twelfth century foundation of the college of the vicars choral, connected to St. Canice's Cathedral. Chapter Two argues that through the orthodox teachings of Peter White, Master of the College from 1557 u...

The body, masculinities and racisim : social relations between migrant and dominant group boys in three inner city primary schools in Dublin
(2012)
Garratt, Lindsey
Abstract:
THESIS 9566
This thesis explores the interactions and relationships between twenty migrant group boys and thirty-nine dominant group boys in three inner city multi-ethnic primary schools in North Inner City Dublin. Social relations between boys are analysed from a Bourdieusian phenomenology of social space to contend that racism and hegemonic masculine gender identities mutually construct each other through their intersection in the corporeal schema of the habitus. Data from two phases of fieldwork are analysed. The first phase was collected as part of the larger Trinity Immigration Initiative [TII], Children Youth and Community Relations Project [CYCR], 'Learning Together' and consist of fifty-five children, forty-seven boys and eight girls from three class groups [7-8 years old] collected over three periods of three weeks each between January and May 2008. Phase two revisits and re-interviews class group three one year on in May 2009 for the author's PhD study a...

Taking Liberties : entrepreneurial governance and gentrification in inner Dublin
(2008)
Kelly, Sin?ad
Abstract:
THESIS 8521
This thesis is centrally concerned with the relationship between capital, the state and disadvantaged inner-city communities. The overall objective of this research is to review the structural forces underlying the recent and dramatic transformation of inner Dublin and to examine how disadvantaged inner-city communities have fared under an entrepreneurial-planning regime which has come to adopt policies of place promotion and competitiveness on the one hand and, on the other, has employed a rhetoric of holistic regeneration and formal participatory structures promising to embrace community goals. The theoretical approach for this thesis drew on two main strands; gentrification and entrepreneurial governance. Theories of gentrification were employed to examine the ways in which capital uses the built environment to make a profit and to examine the impacts on the social profile of inner-city neighbourhoods resulting from uneven temporal and spatial capital flows. Investigation of the stratigrphy, maturation and source-rock potential of Carboniferous black shales in the Dublin Basin
(2000)
Fernandes, Paulo M. C.
Abstract:
THESIS 5794
The Vis?an part of the Dublin Basin stratigraphic succession is dominated turbiditic calcarenites interbedded with grey/black shales. Sedimentological analysis of four exploration wells drilled in the north part of the Dublin Basin revealed that deposition in a carbonate slope to basin settings with predominantly anoxic bottom conditions. The shale lithologies have a considerable composite thickness constituting up to 50% of the whole Vis?an succession. Shale lithologies, especially black shales, dominated sedimentation during late Brigantian to early Namurian times throughout the Dublin Basin, as attested by the sections observed in borehole 1453/5 (Rathfeigh), Donore, Altmush Stream and Ardagh Glen. Sandstones become increasingly important through the Namurian reflecting the onset of fluvio-deltaic conditions. The palynological study of the Vis?an shale lithologies of the Dublin Basin revealed that their kerogen content consist mainly of algal (bacterial)-derived a...

(2011)
Rowley, Ellen
Abstract:
THESIS 9156.1
THESIS 9156.2
The thesis is a history of architecture in Dublin from c.1940 to c.1965. It is the first in-depth examination of Irish architecture during this period. It explores various relationships around the production and culture of architecture over a twenty-five year period such as patronage (local authority, Catholic Church and semi-state), contemporary architectural discourse, architectural education, international influences, stylistic tendencies, technological development and the flowering of town planning. It is an interpretative history which attempts to sketch a comprehensive picture of architecture in its cultural, social, economic and international contexts, 1940 - 1965.

An investigation of the influence of daily activities and location on personal exposure to air pollution in Dublin : measurement, analysis, modelling and application
(2013)
McCreddin, Andrew
Abstract:
THESIS 10147
The research in this study was carried out to quantify real-time personal exposure to PM10 in a large number of individuals residing in the Dublin area. This was carried out in order to highlight activities and locations with high personal exposure concentrations of particulate matter. In addition, the dataset was analysed using various numerical, statistical, and other techniques to develop predictive modelling tools. The main subpopulation of individuals chosen for inclusion in the personal exposure study was office workers. The volunteers were required to monitor for 24-hour periods, which comprised one sample. The personal PM10 exposure data for each subject was collected using a real-time nephelometer device, which recorded concentrations at two minute intervals. The subjects were also required to complete activity diaries and carry a GPS device with them at all times during sampling in order to record their movements. Personal exposure data was collected for 2...

Relative dose / exposure to air pollutants between modes of transport, while commuting to work in Dublin
(2008)
McNabola, Aonghus
Abstract:
THESIS 8356
Research was carried out into the relative exposure of commuters to air pollutants in Dublin between four modes of transport. These differences were determined experimentally by simultaneously sampling the personal exposure of commuters to VOCs and PM2 5 in cars, buses, on bicycles and on foot. Over 400 samples were recorded from January 2005 to June 2006 along two different commuter routes (Route 1 and 2) and the resulting dataset revealed statistically significant differences between exposure concentrations in the modes of transport. The Car commuter was found to have the highest exposure to VOCs followed by the bus, cyclist and pedestrian, while the bus had the highest exposure to PM2.5 followed by the car, cyclist and pedestrian. Using a numerical lung model to predict the internal deposition and absorption of these harmful pollutants revealed that for PM2 5 the cyclists had the highest uptake due to their elevated breathing rates, followed by the bus, pedestrian...

Stigma and identity : an exploration of drug use in West Dublin
(2014)
O'Reilly, Laura
Abstract:
THESIS 10401
This thesis presents an exploratory qualitative study of the lives and experiences of drug users throughout their drug using and drug treatment careers. The research sample consists of thirty three drug users from two locations in the West of Dublin. The thesis pays particular attention to the identities the research participants form as drug users and the stigma they experience as drug users. In exploring the identity and stigma issues faced by drug users throughout their drug using and drug treatment careers, the thesis utilises the theoretical framework on social identity developed by sociologist Erving Goffman (1963). The thesis provides a 'thick' description of the lives, of the research participants, and thus gives a voice to a group who are largely unheard. Data was collected through the use of semi-structured interviews, which was later collated, coded and analysed using the principles of qualitative analysis. Through these measures this thesis pro...

Office suburbanisation in Dublin : user-demand, urban planning and property development
(2004)
Bertz, Sunnhild
Abstract:
THESIS 7535
This thesis explores the underlying dynamics which have brought about the geographical shift of office development to new suburban sites during Dublin?s fourth office development boom (1995 -2001). The role of end-user demand, urban planning and property development interests and, crucially, their interrelationship in the post-1995 period is examined. Chapter 1 establishes the literature context with respect to property development, user-demand and urban planning and their prospective role in influencing the location of office development, more specifically its suburbanisation. This process has been variously interpreted by different authors with respect to the relative influence of each element. Chapter 2 sets out the research methodology adopted in exploring this changing geographical trend of office development. A review of secondary sources (published and unpublished) relating to the planning context and the supply of and demand for office space is given. Primary...

Social mobility and the middling sort : Dublin merchants, 1760-1800
(2009)
Griffith, Lisa Marie
Abstract:
THESIS 8832
This thesis is an investigation of social mobility in the Dublin middling sort between 1760 and 1800 and has focused on merchants in particular. This study has attempted to examine the nature and frequency of social mobility in Ireland by focusing on the capital which had the largest commercial community in Ireland, and the second largest commercial community in the British Isles. Despite the commercial importance of Dublin and the large mercantile community in the capital little research has been done on either the social mobility of the business elite or the nature of the middling sort in the city. This thesis has set out to quantify how many of Dublin?s elite merchants entered, or attempted to join, the landed class of Ireland. By focusing on the wealthiest of business men and those just below the landed class in rank it has also established the socio-economic characteristics of the upper middling sort. The thesis has employed two major methods to analyse the mobi...

On constructing urban travel scales for analysing daily travel patterns : the case of the Greater Dublin Area, Ireland
(2006)
Murphy, Enda
Abstract:
THESIS 7812
Over the last decade the Greater Dublin Area has witnessed significant land use and spatial restructuring. This has forced a distinct change in the spatial organisation of the built environment. Dublin has been transformed from an essentially monocentric city to a more dispersed polycentric city and this has created a new more complex geography of trip making. This research examines the impact of these changes on the journey distance and journey time efficiency of urban travel patterns. This is achieved through the construction of urban travel scales for analysing daily travel patterns. Each travel scale consists of four variables: the average minimum travel cost, the average actual travel cost, the average random travel cost and the average maximum travel cost. The transportation problem of linear programming was used to solve for a theoretical minimum and maximum average travel cost while the Hit-and-Run algorithm was used to simulate average random travel costs fo...

Urban conservation in a comparative perspective : Dublin and Stockholm
(2003)
Negussie, Elene
Abstract:
THESIS 7317.1
THESIS 7317.2
This thesis explores differing approaches to urban conservation in the cities of Dublin and Stockholm. It examines the impact of Central Government policies that have addressed directly or had indirect impact upon urban conservation in Dublin City since the 1950s. It further reviews the evolution of approaches to urban conservation embodied in, and implemented through local-authority urban planning policies. Also, it explores the contribution and role played by the voluntary sector in promoting and effecting urban conservation. The research broadens its scope by providing a cross- cultural comparison of contemporary conservation policies in Dublin and Stockholm. The study explores the impact of cultural and political ideas underlying varying approaches to conservation policy and its implementation. This enables sharper focus to be given to establishing the basis upon which certain urban elements become deemed worthy of conservation and the manner ...

Use of high performance computing in the assessment of congestion charging in the Greater Dublin Area

Abstract:
THESIS 7466.1
THESIS 7466.2
Traffic demand management is part of the package of measures currently being implemented to offset the imbalance between transport demand and supply on the transportation network of the Greater Dublin Area (GDA). An analysis of the development of the transport environment in the GDA leads to the conclusion that the transportation deficit that exists in the GDA can only be addressed using an integrated transportation strategy involving infrastructural and service improvements on one side and a demand management strategy on the other. This transportation deficit has resulted from delays in infrastructure projects and unrealistic planning targets due to institutional and regulatory inefficiencies, cumbersome and time consuming planning system, and, the high economic growth since the Dublin Transportation Initiative began in 1988.

Vigilantes, anti-drug movements, and community empowerment : a Dublin case study
(2006)

Abstract:
THESIS 8543
The Dublin anti-drug movement was a response to the escalation of the overt heroin problem in inner-city areas. In the early 1980?s, Concerned Parents Against Drugs (CPAD) became a citywide network whose intention was to empower local communities to tackle the problem themselves. The movement?s ideals surfaced again in the mid-1990?s when the Coalition of Communities Against Drugs (COCAD) formed to address the second wave of the heroin epidemic in disadvantaged areas. However, one article by Bennett (1988) on the surveillance techniques of CPAD remains the only published research on the movement. Short references to CPAD also exist in various books which examine community, crime, or drug-related issues. These mention the anti-drug movement as a ?social? movement which exercised social control in inner-city areas. CPAD was also frequently presented as a ?vigilante? movement in the media during the 1980?s, as was COCAD a decade later. Furthermore, the existing literatu...

Uneven development and the third space in the urban system : evidence from Dublin
(2001)
Punch, Michael, 1971-
Abstract:
THESIS 6122
The objective of this study is to contribute to the understanding of urban social change through theoretical-empirical exploration of the third space in the city. To achieve this, the research examines some aspects of the relations between broad processes of change, some of which have operated at a global scale, and grassroots mobilisation. The basic point of departure for the study is the manifest inequality across the city and the emergence of various forms of local organisation to respond to some of the related difficulties. In order to deal with these issues, case studies are developed in working- class communities in the inner city and new town of Tallaght in Dublin.

Abstract:
THESIS 7741
The remit of this work is to provide a model of analysis for the evolution of public green spaces in an urban environment, through space and time. The geographical region examined in this thesis is Dublin, and the time period chosen is from the origins of the city - conventionally considered to be 841- to the year 1756 with the publication of John Rocque's map of the city of Dublin. The aim of the research is to identify phases of change in the forms, functions and meanings of public green spaces, and to evaluate these in consideration of the course of relevant historical events.

Keeping Mum' : a qualitative study of women drug users' experience of preserving motherhood in Dublin
(2008)
Woods, Marguerite
Abstract:
THESIS 8447
According to academic accounts, it is not uncommon for women who use illicit drugs to be culturally portrayed in negative stereotypical terms as ?unfeminine?, 'unclean' and 'immoral'. Nowhere is this more evident than when a woman is both a drug user and a mother, when the stereotype is expanded to describe a person who invariably gives priority to her drug use rather than to her children. Where many studies purport to present objective clinical data which demonstrate that maternal drug use is incompatible with good parenting, the present study - while taking account of professional views on this topic - privileges the lived motherhood experience of women drug users who struggle to combine parenting with drug use. This study is about women, drug use and motherhood in Dublin.

Neighbourhood regeneration in the neoliberal era : Dublin and Paris, a comparative perspective

Abstract:
THESIS 9378
This thesis is centrally concerned with changes in state policies. The research aims to trace the evolution of urban regeneration policies in two different geographical contexts, paying attention to both temporal and geographical variations in governmental approaches to regeneration. The study aims to review the manner in which the growing intensification of the neoliberal agenda has differently affected the process of urban regeneration in Paris and Dublin. The aim is to account for variations in the global neoliberal project. This research seeks to make a contribution to the development of urban studies by offering empirical evidence of path-dependency in the evolution of regeneration policies. The study also strives to identify how different socio-political ideological contexts have shaped the ability of indigenous communities to change the outcomes of regeneration. The overall objective is to discuss how powerful socially disadvantaged communities are in influenc...

Incorporating dissent in the renewal of Dublin's inner city : engagements between the local state and inner-city communities in Dublin's Liberties

Abstract:
THESIS 9756
This research addresses a crucial silence in the Irish neoliberal discourse, the voices and struggles of working-class communities resident in those areas in which the state pursued its neoliberal urban-development agenda throughout a decade of intensive development in Dublin?s inner city. The research was prompted by the discrepancy between the official consensus surrounding the Irish state?s urban-renewal agenda and the more critical assessments emanating from communities in the targeted areas. The extent to which those experiences and critiques were obscured from public view raised questions about the manner in which the Irish state managed to proceed almost with impunity while pursuing a highly political urban-development policy resulting in far-reaching negative consequences for working-class residents. The research explores the manner in which such apparent harmony and political quiescence is to be comprehended, notably addressing the degree to which the Irish ...

An analysis of urban public space in three European cities : London, Dublin and Amsterdam

Abstract:
THESIS 9410
This thesis sets out to enquire into the relationship between recent urban transformation and urban public space in three European cities: London, Dublin and Amsterdam. This involves an analysis of the manner in which public space is produced in an official capacity and the way in which it is interpreted and used in everyday life. A central objective of the thesis is to examine the degree to which official ideals related to public space have been transferred between different urban contexts, and its consequences. Moreover, it also examines the importance of social context in terms of understanding urban public space.

The hospital of St John the Baptist, Dublin c. 1188-1539 : a historical and prosopographical analysis

Abstract:
THESIS 9736
The hospital of St John the Baptist was founded c. 1188 by Ailred Palmer and his wife. The hospital was located in the western suburb of medieval Dublin, an area which had seen much expansion and development following the settlement of the city by the English, beginning in 1170. The hospital was of the order of the Fratres Cruciferi, canons regular who followed the rule of St Augustine. It was the first known foundation of this kind in Ireland, though the origins and spread of this order throughout Europe are somewhat obscure. In many ways it was a foundation of its time, a hospital for the sick and poor, located outside the city walls and run by the Augustinians. As much as its experiences in its early years mirrored those of other similar institutions, so too did its demise. It was closed in 1539 as part of the sweeping changes brought about by Henry VIII?s policy of dissolution.

Abstract:
THESIS 5310
Air pollution in Dublin was studied for the period from 1980 to 1996. The factors which contribute to air pollution were investigated, and the nature of particulate air pollution is discussed. The trends in air pollution, and the Government interventions in relation to fuel usage, and air quality were evaluated. All non-accidental mortality for residents of Dublin County Borough was studied for the same period. The study covers 16.75 years, or 6119 days. A total of 80,307 deaths used in the study. Giving an average of 13.2 deaths per day.
