Dublin reformed : the transformation of the municipal governance of a Victorian city, 1840-1860

Abstract:
THESIS 6831.1
THESIS 6831.2
This thesis investigates the reform of Dublin Corporation and its activities from 1840 until the early 1860s. Nineteenth-century Dublin in particular has been overlooked in Irish historiography and, consequently, in general urban histories. The two main works on Dublin are Hill?s Patriots to Unionists (1997) and Daly?s Dublin: The Deposed Capital (1985). Hill covers Dublin city politics from the seventeenth-century until 1840, during which time Protestant freemen in effect controlled the city, while Daly explores Dublin from 1860 until the early twentieth-century, a period throughout which a large portion of Protestants had settled in the suburbs and Catholic nationalists dominated the city council. Dublin in the period between 1840 and 1860 has never been fully researched.

Abstract:
THESIS 1244.1
THESIS 1244.2
THESIS 1244.3
The Carboniferous (Courceyan to Arnsbergian) sedimentary rocks of the Dublin area, between the Balbriggan and Leinster Massifs, are described and discussed. The region north of Swords was re-mapped at a scale of 1:10,560 while the region to the south was studied at a reconnaissance level. Outcrop and borehole material was utilised across the whole area. A revised lithostratigraphy is presented. The geographical extent of the revised formations is shown in detail on two 1:25,0OO solid geological maps and one 1:126,720 geological sketch map. The disposition of Carboniferous strata on the coastal section north of Rush is shown in detail on maps and cross-sections at a scale of 1:2,500. Sedimentological and petrographical studies were undertaken to investigate the geological development of the Dublin Basin. A wide range of basinal facies, ranging from coarse debris flow fans to non-point sourced turbidity current and storm underflow ...

Young people, drugs and risk : an ethnography of drug use in a Dublin inner-city community
(2004)
Mayock, Paula
Abstract:
THESIS 7352
This ethnographic study of drug use is based in a socially disadvantaged Dublin locality with a lengthy history of concentrated drug problems. The study set out to investigate drug use and non-use among young people living in this 'high risk' social environment and to trace their drug 'journeys' as they move towards young adulthood. The study's longitudinal design incorporated two separate phases of fieldwork - the first conducted in 1998 and the second in 2001 - and involved active participation in the social milieu of young people, whether in youth clubs, on the street or, occasionally, in their own homes. At the core of the research was the question of how young people from one marginal 'zone' of Dublin's inner-city navigate the social landscapes available to them and form different kinds and levels of commitment to illicit drug consumption. In accordance with the study's aim of including a range of types and levels of ...

Family, religion, and identity in the Pakistani diaspora : a case study of young Pakistani men in Dublin and Boston
(2014)
Considine, Craig
Abstract:
THESIS 10538
In recent years, Western countries have received Pakistanis as religious fanatics and detrimental to national as well as international safety and politics. Pakistani communities in diaspora have, in turn, received negative attention for controversies surrounding religious activities and a noted lack of integration into host societies. In Ireland and the US, Pakistanis are faced with different challenges due to the migration histories of Pakistanis into these countries, the role of religion in Irish and American societies, and how ideas of the ?nation? have affected individual migrant lives. While the Pakistani diaspora is well researched as one of the largest diasporic communities in the world, little is known about these populations in Dublin and Boston. This study fills the gap in literature by examining the experiences of young Pakistani men through their engagement with family, religion, and identity. In comparing the experiences of young Pakistani men in Dublin...

Abstract:
THESIS 7524
Grassroots Geographic Information Systems : An Examination of Spatial Information Technologies in the Local Community Context: The Case of Tallaght, Dublin, Ireland. The use of Information and Communications Technologies (ICTs), including Geographic Information Systems (GIS), by community based and non-governmental organisations in society is a growing phenomenon. This research undertook a longitudinal study of the design and implementation of a new grassroots model of Public Participation GIS (PPGIS) in the Tallaght community of Dublin, Ireland. This research spanned three years of regular observations of local residents and workers for Community Based Organisations (CBOs) engaged in various community development activities and initiatives.

Irish physical force republicanism in Britain, 1919-1923
(2011)
Noonan, Gerard
Abstract:
THESIS 9100
This thesis studies the activities of Irish republicans - mainly the Irish Republican Army (IRA) - in Britain from the outbreak of the war of independence in 1919 to the end of the civil war in 1923. It is based on my reading of primary and secondary sources. The primary sources employed can be divided into two main types: those dating from the period under study and the recollections of veterans in later life. At University College Dublin Archives, 1 consulted the collections of Eamon de Valera, Sighle Humphries, Terence MacSwiney, Richard Mulcahy, Ernie O'Malley and Maurice ?Moss' Twomey, all of which contain contemporaneous records detailing republican activities in Britain, as well as the transcripts of interviews with veterans decades later.

The housing paths and residential experiences of Polish newcomers to Dublin, Ireland
(2012)
Smith, Alana
Abstract:
THESIS 9611
Dublin city?s economic expansion and retraction have a cyclical effect with the housing market which is also impacted by the migration patterns of citizens from new member states of the European Union. Little is known about this group?s strategies, choices, constraints, and opportunities in the Irish housing system. Applying a transnational element to the housing pathways approach, a metaphorical construct which expands upon the housing careers concept by featuring the subjective experiences of a cohort as the reference for analysis, this thesis outlines the housing paths of 31 Polish residents of Dublin. The modified framework draws attention to the phenomenon that relates to the cohort; a group of motivated, educated, and professional individuals who exercise their agency across geographic boundaries over time.

The merchant community of Dublin in the early seventeenth century : a social, economic and political study
(2008)
Stapleton, Patricia
Abstract:
THESIS 8555
This thesis investigates Dublin merchants in the early seventeenth century within the framework of economic, social and political changes that characterised the period. Although sources were hard to come by in some areas of research, by adopting a thematic approach it was possible to utilise the findings from a wide range of extant material and reconstruct the various strands that made Dublin and its merchant community stand out in early seventeenth-century Ireland. Chapter one provides an economic backdrop to the thesis and shows that in the first four decades of the seventeenth century Dublin emerged as the most affluent port in Ireland in a period that experienced unprecedented economic growth. Although the merchant community of Dublin was previously dismissed as insignificant, chapter two illustrates that Dublin merchants, the majority of whom were Catholic, permeated every area of public life in the city.

Architecture and aspiration : building Dublin's Victorian suburbs
(2013)
Galavan, Susan
Abstract:
THESIS 10847.1
THESIS 10847.2
The project is an interdisciplinary investigation of Victorian domestic architecture in Dublin, within the broader context of the nineteenth-century city. The study is centred on the developments and acquisitions of three prominent developers: Michael Meade, William Carvill and John Crosthwaite. Amongst their extensive list of works they executed schemes of grand semi-detached Victorian residences in some of the most imposing streets of the south Dublin suburbs. The houses which they developed around their homes provide focus for the examination of the planning, design, execution and consumption of these prolific building forms in Dublin.

The changing role of Irish urban planning under a neoliberal agenda : evidence from Dublin
(2012)
McCrory, Niall A.
Abstract:
THESIS 10227
This research is concerned with Irish urban planning; in particular, it investigates how the neoliberal consensus was adopted on the political agenda in the 1980s by infusing economic policy at the central state (national government) level. Moreover, by establishing the local government context for planning, this research explores the manner in which the neoliberal agenda has been thrust on local authorities and explores how urban planning has become a component of the entrepreneurial city, and how this new approach has challenged traditional planning in the common good. The role of An Bord Pleanala as an independent body will also be assessed and examined. The research problem is operationalised through the specifics of a case study; however, the study is limited to the four local authorities of Dublin.

Abstract:
THESIS 9308
This thesis explores the depiction of working-class Dublin in fiction and plays from 1954 to 2004. It examines how proletarian identity is depicted in this body of writing, the common themes and ideas it sustains, and what these parallels contribute to the understanding of Irish literature and culture. Chapter 1 outlines Sean O'Casey's considerable influence on later writers of the working class.

Levis, Shane Reed
Abstract:
THESIS 5966
The research work performed in compiling this thesis can be divided into two broad areas, namely (a) the development, characterisation and examination of potential pharmaceutical applications of new de-aggregated grades of microcrystalline cellulose (MCC) and (b) the characterisation and examination of potential pharmaceutical applications of a novel tubular clay mineral, termed halloysite. MCC is a white, free flowing, tasteless powder produced by the chemical partial depolymerisation of an a-cellulose rich wood pulp at elevated temperatures in the presence of mineral acid. Because of the variation in the raw material used and the conditions of manufacture applied, different grades of MCC are available, one of the principal brands being Avicel?, common grades of which are PH-101 and PH-102. In this project novel size reduced grades of MCC were developed. Preliminary size reduction studies on Avicel? PH-101 showed that chemical de?aggregation using surfactants (a phe...

Development of microemulsions and self-emulsifying systems for oral drug delivery
(2012)
Adamczyk, Bo?ena E.
Abstract:
THESIS 10095
The main aim of the current work was to explore microemulsions (ME) and self- emulsifying lipid formulations (SELFs) comprising derivatives of capric/caprylic acids (Captex 355, Captex 200P, Capmul PG-8, Capmul MCM) as drug delivery systems for oral administration of hydrophilic compounds (BCS class III) intended for encapsulation. Physicochemical profiling of hydrophilic model compounds (two bisphosphonates: sodium alendronate trihydrate and disodium pamidronate pentahydrate and a decaptide, acyline monoacetate) was carried out. Sodium alendronate trihydrate and disodium pamidronate pentahydrate were found to be highly water soluble with the highest solubility achieved in the modified K-Mcllvaine?s buffers pH 7.8 (~52 mg/ml) and pH 4.4 (~70 mg/ml) respectively. Acyline monoacetate was found to be also highly water soluble, however rapid gelation (physical instability) was observed in aqueous solutions. Good solubility (up to 10 mg/g) and physical stability (lack of...

Characterisation and use of porous aluminosilicate pellets for extended drug delivery
(2004)
Byrne, Robert Stephen
Abstract:
THESIS 8048
The initial focus of the research presented in this thesis was on the potential applications of a number of pelletized porous ceramics in drug delivery. These were commercially produced and were marketed for use in the building materials industry and the hydraulic fracturing of oil wells. Characterisation of the porous ceramics showed they were composed of aluminosilicate ceramics, crystalline silica and minor amounts of other materials. Their surfaces were polycationic at low pH?s and polyanionic at higher pH?s. Each ceramic contained highly interconnected open pores with the open porosity and pore size distribution being dependent on the ceramic.

An investigation of the potential anti-inflammatory properties of novel compounds with respect to LFA-1 mediated T cell motility and cytotoxicity profiling
(2009)
Coppins, Jennifer P.
Abstract:
THESIS 9259
The aim of this thesis was to investigate the effects in vitro of novel compounds on LFA-1 mediated T cell motility, and, to develop a profile of the compounds with respect to cytotoxicity and apoptosis. The compounds evaluated in this work were categorised as those that are synthetic derivatives of the naturally occurring pharmacological products from the fern Pteridium aquilinum, which had previously been evaluated in animal models of inflammation, denoted with a prefix PH. Following a pilot study, the following were chosen for further investigation; 6C6, 6C6-OH,7C9 and 7C17 based on activity demonstrated and to examine the potential with varying structures. PH 6 (6C6) had demonstrated significant efficacy in animal models of inflammation. A second group of compounds were isolated in house, known as quinones, and are denoted with a prefix HIH. This group of compounds were also assessed for their inhibitory properties in LFA-I mediated T cell motility. The cytotoxic...

Glycerol-3-phosphatase from Trypanosoma brucei brucei
(2008)
McCourt, ?na
Abstract:
THESIS 8656
Glycerol-3-phosphatase activity was found in both bloodstream and procyclic form o f trypanosomes with a specific activity of 35 nmol/min/mg of protein and 28 nmol/min/mg of protein respectively. The localisation of the enzyme in bloodstream form of trypanosomes was identified as cytosolic using cell fractionation techniques followed by the purification of the enzyme using ion exchange chromatography and size exclusion chromatography. The purified enzyme had a specific activity of 100 ?mol/min/mg protein and had an apparent molecular weight of 32.8 kDa estimated by Tricine SDS-PAGE. Characterisation studies revealed that the enzyme had a molecular weight of 33 kDa determined using a gel filtration technique which was in close agreement with that estimated from SDS-PAGE. The pI of glycerol-3- phosphatase was estimated by chromatofocusing the enzyme using a pH gradient during elution and the enzyme eluted at a pH of 5.0, which was consistent with values reported for ot...

Absorption properties of non-steroidal anti-inflammatory drugs and their amino acid derivatives
(2003)
Levis, Karl
Abstract:
THESIS 7416
The principal objectives of this work were: i) to examine the absorption properties of ibuprofen in a range of different buffer solutions; ii) to study the absorption properties and mechanisms of ibuprofen, ketoprofen and naproxen; and iii) to determine the effect that coupling the ibuprofen molecule to a range of simple amino acids has on its absorption properties and gastrointestinal irritation. Preliminary studies involved the examination of eight different buffers that had been previously used in absorption/perfusion studies as reported in the literature. The solubility of ibuprofen acid in each system varied six-fold over the range of buffers and was related to the buffer pH. Ibuprofen formed poorly soluble salts with calcium ions in Krebs' buffer and became solubilised in fed state simulated intestinal fluid (FeSSIF). Buffer capacity varied significantly over the eight systems. Buffer composition was found to significantly affect the absorption properties ...

A study of the release of the amphoteric drug amoxycillin from biodegradable polymers
(2000)
Mollo, Ana Rosario
Abstract:
THESIS 5337
Poly-alpha-hydroxy-aliphatic esters constitute a group of biodegradable polymers which have been actively investigated over the past three decades for the sustained release of drug compounds. A literature review revealed that the mechanisms of drug release from these esters had not yet been established for amphoteric compounds. Amoxycillin is a commonly used penicillin which was chosen as a model amphoteric drug, since sustained release antibiotics have potential commercial applications. Drug/polymer discs were compressed from either mechanical mixture of the raw powders (MM) or from films prepared through a solvent-evaporation procedure (SE), Four polymers of varying molecular weight and monomer composition were used in the investigation. Among the methods used to characterize the polymeric devices were differential scanning calorimetry (DSC), X-ray diffraction (XRD) and scanning electron microscopy (SEM). Drug release studies were carried out in phosphate buffer pH...

Characterisation and analysis of beta-aminoketones as potential prodrugs for amines
(2004)
Simpl?cio, Ana Lu?sa Ferreira
Abstract:
THESIS 7493
The aim of the work described in this thesis is to evaluate the potential of ?-aminoketones as amine prodrugs. These compounds are usually stable in acidic conditions while they cleave into the parent amine and an ?,?-unsaturated ketone at neutral to basic pH. The rates of liberation of the amine may be suitable for application of these compounds as prodrugs. Chapter 1 describes the principal strategies normally used for the design of prodrugs. Published approaches to amine prodrugs are described with particular detail. Chiral and achiral methods were developed for the analysis of certain ?-aminoindanones and related compounds. This work, which is described in Chapter 2, lead to the discovery that some ?-aminoindanones degrade, in physiological conditions, at rates consistent with their application as prodrugs for amines. In Chapter 3 the kinetic tests performed on new ?-aminoindanones are described. This confirms the applicability of the system to a wider range of p...

Abstract:
THESIS 8506
This thesis examines innovative entrepreneurial firms and their engagement in environmental management in the context of sustainable development. The interrelationships of environmental management with innovation and other strategic processes are studied in order to gain insights on current necessary resources, capabilities and motivations and to inform future orientation of firms towards sustainable development. The thesis begins with a discussion on sustainable development and the role of innovation. Environmental management in organisations is embedded in the concept of sustainable development. The central role played by organisations in sustainable development as well as in innovation is discussed. Approaches to study sustainable development include: ecological modernisation theory, industrial ecology, the systems approach and the role of innovation. These approaches are discussed. The role of innovation in reaching sustainable development is highlighted and, dra...

Essays on the consequences of research and development for manufacturing firms in Ireland
(2001)
Kearns, Allan
Abstract:
THESIS 6157
The aim of this thesis is to investigate some of the economic consequences for manufacturing firms of investing in research and development (R&D), using the Irish manufacturing sector as a case study. Chapter 1 outlines summary statistics on R&D in Irish manufacturing and the current policy objective of increasing R&D investment in Ireland. The aims, data sources and structure of the thesis are also outlined. Chapter 2 benchmarks the post-entry survival and growth of almost 4,000 indigenous new entrant plants that entered the Irish manufacturing sector over the period 1985 to 1995. A limitation of earlier studies that have explored the effect of innovation on the post-entry survival and growth of new entrant plants has been the use of sectoral level innovation data. This has restricted the authors from reaching conclusions about the role of innovative activity within a plant on its subsequent survival and growth. Using a panel dataset of almost four thous...

A feminist reading of the mother-daughter relationship in Gabrielle Roy and Francine No?l
(2008)
Rodgers, Julie
Abstract:
THESIS 8330
This thesis proposes a feminist reading of the mother-daughter relationship in the writings of Gabrielle Roy and Francine Noel. The texts discussed have been selected due to their feminist nature and to the importance that they accord to the mother- daughter relationship. In the case of Gabrielle Roy, these texts are Bonheur d?occasion. La petite Poule d?eau, Rue Deschambault, La route d?Altamont, La rivi?re sans repos, De quoi t?ennuies-tu Eveline, La d?tresse et l'enchantement and Le temps qui m?a manqu?. Her other texts (noted in the bibliography), while they certainly inform the argument of this thesis, do not constitute part of the main body of this study, due to the fact that they are not considered to focus on the mother-daughter relationship. Gabrielle Roy is also the author of a number of unpublished texts. Again, these do not form part of this thesis, as the material to be gathered from the published texts is already substantial. An examination of Gabr...
