The Evaluation of Ensemble Sentiment Classification Approach on Airline Services Using Twitter
(2017)
Wang, Zechen
Abstract:

In the field of sentiment classification, much research has been done on reviews of topics such as movies, software and books. Little research has been done in the airline service domain. In the airline industry, the use of social media as a customer service tool has become a growing phenomenon. The research conducted by Wan and Gao (2015) has proposed an ensemble classification approach for airline service sentiment classification using Twitter data. In accordance, the objective of improving the performance of ensemble classification approach is the primary consideration. This research proposed new hybrid classification approach that uses the state-of-art approach proposed by Wan and Gao (2015) combining with lexicon based approach on classification of airline service topic using Twitter data. The research evaluated the proposed approach in depth, along with explorations of implementing expansion of tweet content in order to further improve the classification performance. ...

How Useful are Carboard Mock-Ups: the Use of Different Levels of Simulation Fidelity in Assessing Signallers' Workload
(2017)
Marshall, Andrew; Murphy, James
Abstract:

Two techniques were utilised: the Bedford Scale and the NASA TLX. Assessments were made with two levels of fidelity. The first used a busy 15 minute scenario with seven different failure conditions using paper based layouts of the new signalling system. The second used a three dimensional representation of the proposed signal box layout for a busy one hour scenario. A key finding was that the new box could be run by two signallers with acceptable levels of workload, even with minor failures. A number of changes to the layout were proposed based on the experience of an hour's simulation. The methodology showed that a cardboard model can be a useful tool in a participatory approach aiding the assessment of design and mental workload in a format that can be readily understood by all the stakeholders.

An Analysis of the Application of Simplified Silhouette to the Evaluation of k-means Clustering Validity
(2017)
Wang, Fei; Franco-Penya, Hector-Hugo; Kelleher, John D.; Pugh, John; Ross, Robert
Abstract:

Silhouette is one of the most popular and effective internal measures for the evaluation of clustering validity. Simplified Silhouette is a computationally simplified version of Silhouette. However, to date Simplified Silhouette has not been systematically analysed in a specific clustering algorithm. This paper analyses the application of Simplified Silhouette to the evaluation of k-means clustering validity and compares it with the k-means Cost Function and the original Silhouette from both theoretical and empirical perspectives. The theoretical analysis shows that Simplified Silhouette has a mathematical relationship with both the k-means Cost Function and the original Silhouette, while empirically, we show that it has comparative performances with the original Silhouette, but is much faster in calculation. Based on our analysis, we conclude that for a given dataset the k-means Cost Function is still the most valid and efficient measure in the evaluation of the validity o...

On the Development of a One-Time Pad Generator for Personalising Cloud Security
(2017)
Tobin, Paul; Tobin, Lee; McKeever, Michael; Blackledge, Jonathan, Profesor
Abstract:

Cloud computing security issues are being reported in newspapers, television, and on the Internet, on a daily basis. Furthermore, in 2013, Edward Snowden alleged backdoors were placed in a number of encryption systems by the National Security Agency causing confidence in public encryption to drop even further. Our solution allows the end-user to add a layer of unbreakable security by encrypting the data locally with a random number generator prior to uploading data to the Cloud. The prototype one-time pad generator is impervious to cryptanalysis because it generates unbreakable random binary sequences from chaos sources initiated from a natural noise. Specialised one-to-Cloud applications for this device means key distribution problems do not exist, even when used at different locations. A JavaScript application maximised the encryptor key entropy using a von Neumann algorithm and modulo-two arithmetic, where the key passed the National Institute of Standards and Technology...

Stochastic Modelling for Levy Distributed Systems
(2017)
Blackledge, Jonathan; Rani, T Raja
Abstract:

The purpose of this paper is to examine a range of results that can be derived from Einstein’s evolution equation focusing on (but not in an exclusive sense) the effect of introducing a L´evy distribution. In this context, we examine the derivation (as derived from the Einstein’s evolution equation) of the classical and fractional diffusion equations, the classical and generalised Kolmogorov-Feller equations, the evolution of self-affine stochastic fields through the fractional diffusion equation and the fractional Schr¨odinger equation, the fractional Poisson equation (for the time independent case), and, a derivation of the Lyapunov exponent. In this way, we provide a collection of results (e.g. the derivation of certain partial differential equations) that are fundamental to the stochastic modelling associated with elastic scattering problems obtained under a unifying theme, namely, Einstein’s evolution equation. The approach is based on a multi-dimensional analysis of s...

Attitudes of Health Professionals to Electronic Data Sharing within an Integrated Care Electronic Health Record (ICEHR)
(2010)
O'Malley, Charyl; Berry, Damon; Sharp, Mary
Abstract:
It is estimated that 98,000 people die in hospitals yearly in the USA as a result of medical errors (Agency for Healthcare Research and Quality, 2009). Electronic Health Records (EHR) can offer improved patient safety. EHRs are being implemented by many countries, however, not all health professionals have welcomed them (MORI Social Research Institute, 2006). As outlined in the National Health Information Strategy (NHIS) document, Ireland has plans to introduce an EHR. Attitudes of health professionals are a significant factor for the successful implementation and adoption of a new clinical information system. This study aimed to gauge the attitude of health professionals in Ireland to electronic data sharing within an integrated care electronic health record (ICEHR). A questionnaire identified attitudes of health professionals in Ireland to EHRs. This resulted in the majority supporting the introduction of an ICEHR system and indicating patient care and safety as the reasons for t...

E-Fraud Prevention based on the Self-Authentication of E-Documents
(2010)
Blackledge, Jonathan; Coyle, Eugene
Abstract:

We consider a method for preventing e-Fraud in which a binary image is encrypted with a floating point cipher using a convolution operation and the output quantized into a 1-bit array generating a binary image ciphertext. The output is then ‘embedded’ in a host image to hide the encrypted information. Embedding is undertaken either in the lowest 1-bit layer or multiple 1-bit layers. Decryption is accomplished by: (i) extracting the binary image from the host image; (ii) correlating the result with the original cipher. In principle, any cipher generator can be used for this purpose and the method has been designed to operate with 24-bit colour images. The approach has a variety of applications and in this paper, we focus on the authentication and self-authentication of e-documents (letters and certificates, for example) that are communicated over the Internet and are thereby vulnerable to e-Fraud (e.g. modification, editing, counterfeiting etc.).

Abstract:

A review of the MAXUS 8 sounding rocket microgravity experiment to investigate solidification structures in a Ti-Al-Nb intermetallic alloy is presented. The experiment was part of the Intermetallic Materials Processing in Relation to Earth and Space Solidification (IMPRESS) EU FP6 project. Key objectives were to investigate columnar and equiaxed solidification, and to achieve Columnar-to-Equiaxed Transition (CET) in the alloy. A microgravity experiment was designed to achieve this using a controlled power-down method. Two alloys were tested: one inoculated with a grain refiner and the other without grain refinement. Unrefined samples displayed axial and radial columnar growth. Boride inoculated samples displayed an equiaxed structure. No clear CET was achieved. The design, details, and results of the experiment are presented.

Designing an XML Lexicon Architecture for Arabic Machine Translation Based on Role and Reference Grammar
(2009)
Nolan, Brian; Salem, Yasser
Abstract:

Role and Reference Grammar (RRG) is a functional theory of grammar. The main features of Role and Reference Grammar are the use of lexical decomposition, based upon predicate semantics, an analysis of clause structure and the use of a set of thematic roles organized into a hierarchy in which the highestranking roles are Actor (for the most active participant) and Undergoer. The theory allows a sentence in a specific language to be described in terms of its logical structure and grammatical procedures. The lexicon in RRG takes the position that lexical entries for verbs should contain unique information only, with as much information as possible derived from general lexical rules. We use the RRG theory to motivate the architecture of the lexicon. The lexicon is designed to reflect the word categories in the Arabic language with as much information as possible derived from general lexical rules. The lexicon stores the Arabic words in categories; each category is stored in an ...

Sentiment Classification of Reviews Using SentiWordNet
(2009)
Ohana, Bruno; Tierney, Brendan
Abstract:

Sentiment classification concerns the use of automatic methods for predicting the orientation of subjective content on text documents, with applications on a number of areas including recommender and advertising systems, customer intelligence and information retrieval. SentiWordNet is an opinion lexicon derived from the WordNet database where each term is associated with numerical scores indicating positive and negative sentiment information. This research presents the results of applying the SentiWordNet lexical resource to the problem of automatic sentiment classification of film reviews. Our approach comprises counting positive and negative term scores to determine sentiment orientation, and an improvement is presented by building a data set of relevant features using SentiWordNet as source, and applied to a machine learning classifier. We find that results obtained with SentiWordNet are in line with similar approaches using manual lexicons seen in the literature. In add...

A Generic Approach and Framework for Managing Complex Information
(2008)
Mansour, Essam
Abstract:

Several application domains, such as healthcare, incorporate domain knowledge into their day-to-day activities to standardise and enhance their performance. Such incorporation produces complex information, which contains two main clusters (active and passive) of information that have internal connections between them. The active cluster determines the recommended procedure that should be taken as a reaction to specific situations. The passive cluster determines the information that describes these situations and other descriptive information plus the execution history of the complex information. In the healthcare domain, a medical patient plan is an example for complex information produced during the disease management activity from specific clinical guidelines. This thesis investigates the complex information management at an application domain level in order to support the day-to-day organization activities. In this thesis, a unified generic approach and framework, called...

an Exploration of the Internationalisation Process of Irish Indigenous Software SMEs
(2005)
Keeney, Kathy
Abstract:

From meagre beginnings in the 1970s, the Irish software industry has emerged as one of the most interesting, exciting and successful Irish internationally traded service industries. Some thirty years later, the industry is still characterised by high levels of international trade activity, through niche market orientation and innovative and flexible management. Through an exploration of the internationalisation process in the context of Irish indigenous software firms, this thesis seeks to understand how this process of international expansion occurs, the barriers encountered throughout the process, future challenges for the industry and the use of strategic partnership activities as a facilitator in seeking international markets. Through a qualitative research approach, future challenges for the industry and the use of strategic partnership activities as a facilitator in seeking international markets. Through a qualitative research approach, semi-structured in-depth interv...

Making OLSR Aware of Resources
(2007)
Kowalik, Karol; Keegan, Brian; Davis, Mark
Abstract:

An important element of any routing protocol used for Wireless Mesh Networks (WMNs) is the link cost function used to represent the radio link characteristic. The majority of the routing protocols for WMNs attempt to accurately characterise the radio link quality by constructing the link cost function from the measurements obtained using active probing techniques which introduces overhead. In this paper we present a modified version of the Optimized Link State Routing (OLSR) protocol which uses the link cost function values provided the Resource Aware Routing for mEsh (RARE) module which employs passive monitoring to gather radio link information. This results in a smaller overhead than the other methods that require active network probing and furthermore is load dependent since it does not require an access to the medium. We demonstrate the necessary modifications to OLSR required to make it work with RARE. The result of our ns-2 simulations show that such a combination (O...

Throughput Enhancement Through Combined Fragmentation and Rate Method in IEEE 802.11b WLANS
(2008)
Bykowski, Marek; Kowalik, Karol; Keegan, Brian; Davis, Mark
Abstract:

IEEE 802.11 allows for fragmentation tuning and rate selection. Their combined usage is referred sometimes to link adaptation. However, the algorithms of link adaptation are beyond the 802.11 standards. In this paper we investigate the benefits arising from proper use of link adaptation. Particularly, we develop a mathematical model describing the fragmented transmission in 802.11b. We examine potential benefits of it over AWGN and fading channels. More significantly we combine fragmentation tuning with bit-rate selection to yield the highest achievable throughput performance for any given channel conditions. Finally, we propose an algorithm that performs the optimal link adaptation.

Effects of Lline Rate on vVideo QoS over Wireless Networks: an Experimental Approach
(2008)
Wallace, Stuart; Davis, Mark
Abstract:

Video streaming over Wireless Local Area Networks (WLANS) is becoming an increasingly popular service. However, end user OoS is highly influenced by many factors. These include the video codec used, the packetization scheme, error concealment and correction techniques, the complexity of the video, propagation losses, and the line rate. In this paper the effect of the line rate on the capacity of the network when streaming multimedia content is analyzed experimentally. It is shown that as the line rate decreases the bandwidth load of the video stream dramatically increases leading to poor QoS at the client side. As automatic line rate adaptation schemes are typically employed in the majority of WLAN adapters, clients have no control over the line rate of their connection and consequently can suffer from a poor QoS for their video streaming services.

Investigation of Across-layer Modification to the DSR Routing Protocol in Wireless Mesh Networks
(2008)
Ramadhan, Mustafa; Davis, Mark
Abstract:

This work introduces a cross-layer modification to the DSR protocol that increases the global throughput in wireless mesh networks. In our modified DSR protocol we have introduced the Access Efficiency metric as an alternative to the hop-count metric in order to improve the route selection mechanism. The selected path in the route selection mechanism is identified by choosing the path with the highest minimum Access Efficiency value. We have employed the OPNET modeller as a simulator to examine two different patterns of traffic for a series of randomly generated network topologies. Each topology was simulated twice. One simulation used the original DSR algorithm while the other utilised the modified DSR algorithm. The average throughput was recorded for each run and the percentage improvement for the particular topology was calculated. Our results demonstrate that a significant increase in the global throughput of the networks can be achieved by implementing our modified DS...

Abstract:

Power control techniques for IEEE 802.11 wireless networks have already gained considerable attention. Such techniques are particularly attractive because they can improve various aspects of wireless network operation such as interference mitigation, spatial reuse in dense wireless deployments, topology control, and link quality enhancement. In this paper we propose a novel delivery ration based Conservative Transmit Power Control (ConTPC) mechanism. Our implementation is conservative when it comes to deciding if the transmit power should be reduced for a given link. This is because we do not want poor quality wireless links to further reduce their quality and be overwhelmed by other links transmitting at maximum power. We have experimentally evaluated the benefit of the proposed power control scheme when compared with fixed power level systems. We show that our ConTPC mechanism can increase the throughput, however the magnitude of this enhancement largely depends on the to...

Abstract:

Power control techniques for IEEE 802.11 wireless networks have already gained much attention. Such techniques are particularly attractive because they can improve various aspects of wireless network operations such as interference mitigation, spatial reuse in dense wireless deployments, topology control, and link quality enhancement. However, until recently implementing such advanced power control using off-the-shelf wireless devices was not considered possible. For example, Abdesslem et al. [1] stated that “many novel power control solutions cannot be efficiently implemented over existing IEEE 802.11 cards”. However, in this paper we demonstrate that power control is now feasible and can be implemented in current IEEE 802.11 cards with per-packet granularity and low power switching latency.

Rare: Resource Aware Routing for mEsh
(2007)

Abstract:

An important element of any routing protocol used for Wireless Mesh Networks (WMNs) is the link cost function used to represent the radio link characteristic. The majority of the routing protocols for WMNs attempt to accurately characterise the radio link quality by constructing the link cost function from the measurements obtained using active probing techniques, which introduces overhead. In this paper we propose a new approach called Resource Aware Routing for mEsh (RARE) which instead employs passive monitoring to gather radio link information. This results in a smaller overhead than the other methods that require active network probing, and is load independent since it does not require an access to the medium. Moreover, se show that our RARE approach performs well in a real radio environment through a number of experiments performed on a static 17 node WLAN mesh testbed.

Abstract:

Wireless Mesh Networks (WMNs) are a type of radio-based network which require minimal configuration and infrastructure. They can be built using relatively low cost radio and computing platforms. In this paper we attempt to analyze the performance of a simple WNM using various packet sizes as well as a multi-hop WMN.

Knowledge Management in a Project Environment: Organisational CT and Project Influences
(2011)
Polyaninova, Taya
Abstract:

During a project implementation various forms of information and experience are generated within the organization. If this accumulated knowledge is not recorded and shared amongst other projects, this knowledge will be lost and no longer be available to assist future projects. This may lead to increased future projects costs as resources, time and money will be wasted on redefining the knowledge that once existed within the company. By not capturing and redeploying this knowledge, the quality of a project’s deliverables may adversely suffer. First the publication reviews the concept of project knowledge management. It defines the reasons for managing project knowledge, the benefits it brings to organizations and challenges that exist within the organization that prevent the process from being successfully deployed. Secondly, the sources of knowledge within projects and strategies that can be used by organizations to manage this knowledge are reviewed. Further more the paper...

Intelligibility of Electrolarynx Speech Using a Novel Actuator
(2010)

Abstract:

During voiced speech, the larynx provides quasi-periodic acoustic excitation of the vocal tract. Following a laryngectomy, some people speak using an electrolarynx which replaces the excitatory function of the absent larynx. Drawbacks of conventional electrolarynx designs include the buzzing monotonic sound emitted, the need for a free hand to operate the device, and difficulty experienced by many laryngectomees in adapting to its use. Despite these shortcomings, it remains the preferred method of speech rehabilitation for a substantial minority of laryngectomees. In most electrolarynxes, mechanical vibrations are produced by a linear electromechanical actuator, the armature of which percusses against a metal or plastic plate at a frequency within the range of glottal phonation. As part of the ongoing development of a hands-free alternative to the conventional electrolarynx, the authors have developed a novel actuator which is based on a lightweight pager motor similar to t...

Terminology Enhanced EHR: integration of archetypes and terminology, an implementation experience
(2010)

Abstract:
The integration of terminology and EHR information models is an important step in the journey towards semantic interoperability. Archetypes and two-level models for EHRs provide a mechanism that not only applies constraints on clinical content but also ensures effective terminology binding. However the lack of a standardised mechanism to bind terminology to the EHR and the difficulty of systematically coding clinical content, has led to a number of possible implementation choices. This study presents a review of the problems that may occur when working with modern terminology systems and discusses some related state of art technologies. The paper aims to share the experience of prototyping a minimum terminology integration service. A set of tools utilising medical text processing and a customised SNOMED-CT data source are the output of prototyping that enables quick processing of archetypes and automatic link suggestions to SNOMED-CT. The elaboration of prototypes of this sort can...
