Superstrings on AdS_4 x CP^3 as a Coset Sigma-model
(2008)
FROLOV, SERGEY
Abstract:
According to the recent proposal by Aharony, Bergman, Jafferis and Maldacena the N=6 supersymmetric Chern-Simons theory in three dimensions has a 't Hooft limit whose holographic dual is described by type IIA superstings on AdS_4 x CP^3 background. We argue that the Green-Schwarz action for type IIA string theory on AdS_4 x CP^3 with kappa-symmetry partially fixed can be understood as a coset sigma-model on the same space supplied with a proper Wess-Zumino term. We construct the corresponding sigma-model Lagrangian and show that it is invariant under a local fermionic symmetry which for generic bosonic string configurations allows one to remove 8 out of 24 fermionic degrees of freedom. The remaining 16 fermions together with their bosonic partners should describe the physical content of AdS_4 x CP^3 superstring. As further evidence, we demonstrate that in the plane-wave limit the quadratic action arising from our model reproduces the one emerging from the type IIA superstring. ...

Comment on Submillimeter spectroscopic study of concentrated electrolyte solutions as high density plasma

Abstract:
The authors of the title article: (1) contrary to their findings did not fully comprehend that in our paper [Phys. Chem. Chem. Phys., 3, 523 (2001)], the estimated contribution of ions oscillating between the two "reflecting walls" (which model water surroundings) is very small and (2) the negative result of their experiment, that plasma oscillations are not excited in the concentrated electrolyte solutions, could have also been foreseen from the known experimental data.

A novel envelope simulation technique for high-frequency nonlinear circuits
(2003)
Condon, Marissa; Dautbegovic, Emira
Abstract:
The paper proposes a new approach for the analysis and simulation of circuits subject to input signals with widely separated rates of variation. Such signals arise in communication circuits when an RF carrier is modulated by a low-frequency information signal. The approach will involve converting the ordinary differential equation system that describes the circuit to a partial differential equation system and subsequently solving the resultant system using a multiresolution collocation approach involving a cubic spline wavelet-based decomposition.

High-resolution near-field measurements of microwave circuits
(2004)
SHVETS, IGOR; KANTOR, ROMAN
Abstract:
In this paper we report on measurements of electric field intensities of microwave field above surface of microwave circuits using miniaturized coaxial antennas. During the scanning process the antenna is driven at various distances above the sample surface according to topographic data acquired prior to the field measurement. A position/signal difference method is used to increase the spatial resolution of the antenna to about 20 jm ( A/104) - one order of magnitude better than contemporary microwave scanning systems. For measurement of the tangential field components parallel to the sample surface the antenna is tilted by about 45° relative to the sample surface. By its rotation about the vertical axis various components of the field are measured, vertical and horizontal electric field intensities are recalculated. Performance of our scanning system utilizing these methods is tested using a PCB surface capacitor, a microstrip filter and a microstrip transmission line.

High-speed cell-level path allocation in a three-stage ATM switch
(1994)
Collier, Martin
Abstract:
Path allocation in a three-stage ATM switch is the process whereby bandwidth is reserved through the second stage of the switch for each cell. Cell-level path allocation, performed once in every time slot, ensures that cells are routed through the second stage of the switch without delay or contention. A new algorithm for cell-level path allocation was previously proposed by the author. The motive for supporting intermediate channel grouping in the algorithm is described. The results of the path allocation process must be forwarded to the appropriate cells by a routing tag assignment network. A fast method of routing tag assignment is described, which employs a non-blocking copy network. This reduces the clock rate required of the circuitry, for a given switch size

High performance deep packet inspection on multi-core platform
(2009)
Wang, Cong; Morris, Joseph; Wang, Xiaojun
Abstract:
Deep packet inspection (DPI) provides the ability to perform quality of service (QoS) and Intrusion Detection on network packets. But since the explosive growth of Internet, performance and scalability issues have been raised due to the gap between network and end-system speeds. This article describles how a desirable DPI system with multi-gigabits throughput and good scalability should be like by exploiting parallelism on network interface card, network stack and user applications. Connection-based parallelism, affinity-based scheduling and lock-free data structure are the main technologies introduced to alleviate the performance and scalability issues. A common DPI application L7-Filter is used as an example to illustrate the applicaiton level parallelism.

Degradation and breakdown characteristics of thin MgO dielectric layers
(2010)
O'Connor, Robert; Hughes, Greg; Casey, Patrick; Newcomb, Simon B.
Abstract:
MgO has been suggested as a possible high-k dielectric for future complementary metal-oxide semiconductor processes. In this work, the time dependent dielectric breakdown (TDDB) characteristics of 20 nm MgO films are discussed. Stress induced leakage current measurements indicate that the low measured Weibull slopes of the TDDB distributions for both n-type and p-type devices cannot be attributed to a lower trap generation rate than for SiO2. This suggests that much fewer defects are required to trigger breakdown in MgO under voltage stress than is the case for SiO2 or other metal-oxide dielectrics. This in turn explains the progressive nature of the breakdown in these films which is observed both in this work and elsewhere. The reason fewer defects are required is attributed to the morphology of the films.

Photoemission study of the SiO₂conversion mechanism to magnesium silicate
(2010)
Casey, Patrick; Hughes, Greg
Abstract:
The objective of this work is to investigate interface chemistries which minimize the interfacial silicon oxide transition region at Si/high-k dielectric interfaces. We report on the mechanism by which a silicon native oxide layer is converted into magnesium silicate. The deposition of metal Mg onto a SiO native oxide surface resulted in the formation of a magnesium silicide in addition to substochiometric silicon oxides and a significant decrease in the oxidised silicon signal. Annealing to 300 °C resulted in the decomposition of the magnesium silicide, oxidation of the Mg, and the desorption of excess metallic Mg. Subsequent annealing to 500 °C resulted in converting the SiO2 into magnesium silicate. The results suggest that the decomposition of the Mg silicide in the presence of the residual native oxide facilitates silicate formation at 500 °C. Due to the reported thermal stability of Mg silicate it is suggested that this process may be beneficial in modifying the interface char...

Surface morphology of c-plane sapphire (á-alumina) produced by high temperature anneal
(2010)
SHVETS, IGOR; MURPHY, SHANE
Abstract:
A comparative study of the morphological surface evolution of c-plane (0001) alpha-Al2O3 upon annealing was investigated for non-miscut (i.e. substrates with 0 degrees nominal miscut) and vicinal substrates. The samples were annealed in air at 1100 degrees C for different durations of time. Although non-miscut samples do not show any step bunching at this temperature, miscut substrates show a regular and ordered stepped morphology with clearly defined terraces as revealed by Atomic Force Microscopy (AFM) and Transmission Electron Microscopy (TEM) image analysis. The surface morphology presents a number of coalescence points, i.e. locations where two steps merge and form a multiple step. Close to the coalescence points, parallel steps change direction to different low index direction.

D'Andrea, Anthony
Abstract:
This dossier features 18 interview transcripts with ICT professionals working in or for firms located in the National Technology Park (NTP), Limerick. Conducted by Dr. Anthony D’Andrea (ISSP Research Fellow, Dept. Sociology, UL) over the year 2009 until early 2010, these are semi-structured ethnographic interviews lasting an average of 90 minutes (varying from one to three hours each). Following ethical research protocols, the identity of all interviewees and their firms are protected with the use of pseudonyms. The interviews explore and register three sets of questions: 1) biographical questions about the individual’s background, professional trajectory, basic work function, family and lifestyle; 2) work questions about daily work activities and their integration with new technologies, new forms of employment, mobility, connectivity and networking practices and regimes at local, regional and international levels; 3) institutional questions: firm choices over location, perceptions ...

Toward the excited meson spectrum of dynamical QCD
(2010)
PEARDON, MICHAEL JAMES
Abstract:
We present a detailed description of the extraction of the highly excited isovector meson spectrum on dynamical anisotropic lattices using a new quark-field construction algorithm and a large variational basis of operators. With careful operator construction, the combination of these techniques is used to identify the continuum spin of extracted states reliably, overcoming the reduced rotational symmetry of the cubic lattice. Excited states, states with exotic quantum numbers (0+-, 1-+ and 2+-), and states of high spin are resolved, including, for the first time in a lattice QCD calculation, spin-four states. The determinations of the spectrum of isovector mesons and kaons are performed on dynamical lattices with two volumes and with pion masses down to ∼400 MeV, with statistical precision typically at or below 1% even for highly excited states.

Abstract:
This work focuses on a search for magnets that can be used at elevated temperature. We have studied the effect of ZrB2 addition on the magnetic properties and stability of nanocrystalline 1:7 type Sm(Co,Ti,Zr) magnets up to 500°C. Amorphous ball milled powder was annealed to develop the TbCu7 type structure. The room temperature coercivity of SmCo6.5(ZrB2)0.033Ti0.4 is 2.1 T. The microstructure is stable at 400°C, where the coercivity is 0.5T.

Core materials for high frequency VRM inductors

Abstract:
The application of PCB integrated electroplated cores for VRM inductors is proposed, where the motivation is to increase frequencies beyond 1 MHz so that VRM transient response can be improved. It is shown that electroplated alloys have loss properties that are at least competitive with those of the highest frequency ferrite material available. Various PCB integrated inductor designs are presented, with toroidal cores providing the smallest solution. Measured losses under nonsinusoidal operating conditions are provided and work is ongoing to characterise the materials further.

Multisource Composite Kernels for Urban-Image Classification
(2010)
Tuia, Devis; Ratle, Frederic; Pozdnoukhov, Alexei; Camps-Valls, Gustavo
Abstract:
This letter presents advanced classification methods for very high resolution images. Efficient multisource information, both spectral and spatial, is exploited through the use of composite kernels in support vector machines. Weighted summations of kernels accounting for separate sources of spectral and spatial information are analyzed and compared to classical approaches such as pure spectral classification or stacked approaches using all the features in a single vector. Model selection problems are addressed, as well as the importance of the different kernels in the weighted summation.

REILLY, RICHARD; KIISKI, HANNI
Abstract:
Objective. To quantify latency, amplitude and topographical differences in event-related potential (ERP) components between multiple sclerosis (MS) patients and controls and to compare ERP findings with results from the paced auditory serial addition test (PASAT). Methods. Fifty-four subjects (17 relapsing remitting (RRMS) patients, 16 secondary progressive (SPMS) patients, and 21 controls) completed visual and auditory oddball tasks while data were recorded from 134 EEG channels. Latency and amplitude differences, calculated using composite mean amplitude measures, were tested using an ANOVA. Topographical differences were tested using statistical parametric mapping (SPM). Results. In the visual modality, P2, P3 amplitudes and N2 latency were significantly different across groups. In the auditory modality, P2, N2, and P3 latencies and N1 amplitude were significantly different across groups. There were no significant differences between RRMS and SPMS patients on any ERP component. T...

Impaired information processing speed and attention allocation in multiple sclerosis patients versus controls: A high-density EEG study
(2010)
REILLY, RICHARD
Abstract:
Background: The no-go P3a is a variant of the P300 event-related potential (ERP) that indexes speed of information processing and attention allocation. The aim of this study was to compare ERP findings with results from the paced auditory serial addition test (PASAT) and quantify latency, amplitude and topographical differences in P3a ERP components between multiple sclerosis (MS) patients and controls. Patients and Methods: Seventy-four subjects (20 relapsing remitting (RRMS) patients, 20 secondary progressive (SPMS) patients and 34 controls) completed a three-stimulus oddball paradigm (target, standard, nontarget). Subjects participated in separate visual and auditory tasks while data were recorded from 134 EEG channels. Latency differences were tested using an ANCOVA. Topographical differences were tested using statistical parametric mapping. Results: Visual P3a amplitude correlated with PASAT score in all MS patients over frontal and parietal areas. There were significant differ...

A High-Precision Apparatus for the Characterization of Thermal Interface Materials
(2009)
ROBINSON, ANTHONY
Abstract:
An apparatus has been designed and constructed to characterize thermal interface materials with unprecedented precision and sensitivity. The design of the apparatus is based upon a popular implementation of ASTM D5470 where well-characterized meter bars are used to extrapolate surface temperatures and measure heat flux through the sample under test. Measurements of thermal resistance, effective thermal conductivity, and electrical resistance can be made simultaneously as functions of pressure or sample thickness. This apparatus is unique in that it takes advantage of small, well-calibrated thermistors for precise temperature measurements 0.001 K and incorporates simultaneous measurement of electrical resistance of the sample. By employing precision thermometry, low heater powers and minimal temperature gradients are maintained through the meter bars, thereby reducing uncertainties due to heat leakage and changes in meter-bar thermal conductivity. Careful implementation of instrum...

Abstract:
Screening large numbers of target regions in multiple DNA samples for sequence variation is an important application of next-generation sequencing but an efficient method to enrich the samples in parallel has yet to be reported. We describe an advanced method that combines DNA samples using indexes or barcodes prior to target enrichment to facilitate this type of experiment. Sequencing libraries for multiple individual DNA samples, each incorporating a unique 6-bp index, are combined in equal quantities, enriched using a single in-solution target enrichment assay and sequenced in a single reaction. Sequence reads are parsed based on the index, allowing sequence analysis of individual samples. We show that the use of indexed samples does not impact on the efficiency of the enrichment reaction. For three- and nine-indexed HapMap DNA samples, the method was found to be highly accurate for SNP identification. Even with sequence coverage as low as 8x, 99% of sequence SNP calls were conco...

Abstract:
Background The existence of multiple subsets of chronic lymphocytic leukemia expressing ‘stereotyped’ Bcell receptors implies the involvement of antigen(s) in leukemogenesis. Studies also indicate that ‘stereotypy’ may influence the clinical course of patients with chronic lymphocytic leukemia, for example, in subsets with stereotyped IGHV3-21 and IGHV4-34 B-cell receptors; however, little is known regarding the genomic profile of patients in these subsets. Design and Methods We applied 250K single nucleotide polymorphism-arrays to study copy-number aberrations and copy-number neutral loss-of-heterozygosity in patients with stereotyped IGHV3-21 (subset #2, n=29), stereotyped IGHV4-34 (subset #4, n=17; subset #16, n=8) and non-subset #2 IGHV3-21 (n=13) and non-subset #4/16 IGHV4-34 (n=34) patients. Results Over 90% of patients in subset #2 and non-subset #2 carried copy-number aberrations, whereas 75-76% of patients in subset #4 and subset #16 showed copy-number aberrations. Subset #...

Abstract:
<p>Detecting emotion in speech is important in advancing human-computer interaction, especially in the area of speech synthesis. This poster details experimental procedures based on Mood Induction Procedure 4, using performance related tasks to engender natural emotional responses in participants. These tasks are aided or hindered by the researcher to illicit the desired emotional response. These responses will then be recorded and their emotional content graded to form the basis of an emotional speech corpus. This corpus will then be used to develop a rule-set for basic emotional dimensions in speech.</p>
