Carbon nanocages with nanographene shell for high-rate lithium ion batteries
(2010)
Wang, Kaixue; Li, Zhonglai; Wang, Yonggang; Li, Haimei; Chen, Jiesheng; Holmes, Justin D.
Abstract:
Carbon nanocages with a nanographene shell have been prepared by catalytic decomposition of p-xylene on a MgO supported Co and Mo catalyst in supercritical CO2 at a pressure of 10.34 MPa and temperatures ranging from 650 to 750 °C. The electrochemical performance of these carbon nanocages as anodes for lithium ion batteries has been evaluated by galvanostatic cycling. The carbon nanocages prepared at a temperature of 750 °C exhibited relatively high reversible capacities, superior rate performance and excellent cycling life. The advanced performance of the carbon nanocages prepared at 750 °C is ascribed to their unique structural features: (1) nanographene shells and the good inter-cage contact ensuring fast electron transportation, (2) a porous network formed by fine pores in the carbon shell and the void space among the cages facilitating the penetration of the electrolyte and ions within the electrode, (3) thin carbon shells shortening the diffusion distance of Li ions, and (4) t...

High resolution mapping of a cold water coral mound
(2019)
Conti, Luis A.; Lim, Aaron; Wheeler, Andrew J.
Abstract:
Cold-water coral (CWC) mounds are biogenic, long-lived morphostructures composed primarily by scleractinian CWC’s and hemipelagic sediments that form complex deep-sea microhabitats found globally but specifically along the European-Atlantic margin. In this work, high-resolution mapping was applied to identify individual organismal distribution and zonation across a CWC Piddington Mound within the Porcupine Seabight, Ireland Margin. Marine Object-Based Image Analysis (MOBIA) and different machine learning classification methods (decision tree, logistic regression, and deep neural network) were applied to a high-resolution (2 mm) reef-scale video mosaic and ROV-mounted multibeam data in order to provide new insights into the spatial organization of coral frameworks and environmental factors on CWC mounds. The results showed an accurate quantification of the amount of Coral Framework (14.5%; ~2% live and ~12.5% dead) and sponges (~3.5%) with heterogeneous distribution, restricted to a ...

Abstract:
The Documents in the financial services, insurance, utilities, and government sectors typically require a high volume of PDF documents to be generated which are stored for presentment or archived for legal purposes. As high volume transactional output (HVTO) demands put increasing pressure on online presentment capabilities, accessibility has become a growing concern. In particular, access to these files proposes significant challenges when these documents are presented to visually impaired people using assistive technologies (i.e. screen readers). Since it is rare that all recipients are prepared to accept electronic delivery of their documents, a large portion of the documents is still printed as PDFs. In an online billing system, bills are sent to customers’ email accounts as attached PDF files or HTML links. These bills in the most cases are neither accessible through assistive technologies nor useable by vision-impaired customers. This paper provides a method for HVTO documents...

Abstract:
Sampling approaches used to census and monitor populations of flora and fauna are diverse, ranging from simple random sampling to complex hierarchal stratified designs. Usually the approach taken is determined by the spatial and temporal distribution of the study population, along with other characteristics of the focal species. Long-term monitoring programs used to assess seabird population trends are facilitated by their high site fidelity, but are often hampered by large and difficult to access colonies, with highly variable densities that require intensive survey. We aimed to determine the sampling effort required to (a) estimate population size with a high degree of confidence, and (b) detect different scenarios of population change in a regionally important species in the Atlantic, the Manx shearwater (Puffinus puffinus). Analyses were carried out using data collected from tape-playback surveys on four islands in the North Atlantic. To explore how sampling effort influenced co...

High dynamic range photo-detection module using on-chip dual avalanche photodiodes
(2019)

Abstract:
In this work, a high dynamic range APD-based photo-detection module is designed and developed. In the design, on-chip dual avalanche photodiodes (APDs) are fabricated with one biased to work in linear mode and the other one biased to work in single photon mode. The APD operating in linear mode is connected to a two-stage amplifier I-V conversion circuit and the APD operating in single photon mode is connected to a custom designed active quench and reset integrated circuit. The design enables the two on-chip APDs operate in different modes simultaneously without user intervention. This simplifies the system operation and a wide range of incident light intensities can be easily detected. Experimental results show that a high dynamic range of 164.2 dB is achieved by the module.

Abstract:
Aims: To determine if HFNC use was associated with changes in incidence of BPD and ROP. Methods: This retrospective study examined premature infants (<30 weeks GA or <1500g) in a tertiary neonatal unit from 2010-2016. Patients were compared before and after introduction of HFNC. Further analysis of high-risk infants (<28 weeks GA or <750g or ventilated) compared those who received HFNC to those who did not across the whole period. Primary outcomes were incidence of BPD and ROP requiring surgery. Results: Incidence of BPD rose following the introduction of HFNC (82/232 (35.3%) after vs 33/251 (13.1%) before, p<0.001). On multivariate analysis, the chance of developing BPD after HFNC introduction remained higher (OR 4.353, 95% CI2.546-7.443). More infants received surgery for ROP following HFNC introduction (0/214 vs 11/205 (5.4%), p=<0.001). In the second analysis, the rate of BPD was higher in those who received HFNC (90/132 (68.1%) vs 33/153 (21.6%), p<0.001). ...

Impact of Sensory Stimulation on Pharyngo-esophageal Swallowing Biomechanics in Adults with Dysphagia: A High-Resolution Manometry Study
(2020)
Regan, Julie
Abstract:
Evidence supporting sensory stimulation of swallowing is based mostly on videofluoroscopy and provides little insight into changes to swallowing physiology. In this study, the impact of sensory stimulation on pharyngo-esophageal swallowing biomechanics was investigated in adults with dysphagia using pharyngeal high-resolution manometry. Fifteen adults (8 males; 45?86 years) with mixed etiology dysphagia were consecutively recruited over a three-month period. PHRM equipment with a 4.2 mm pressure catheter was used. The protocol included duplicate 10 ml neutral, sour, cold, and carbonated liquid swallows in randomized order. Semi-automated analysis was completed using an online portal (www.swallowgateway.com). Data from 98/120 swallows were analyzed. During the pharyngeal phase, mean pharyngeal contractile integral (PhCI) increased significantly with cold (p?=?0.03), sour (p?=?0.00), and carbonation (p?=?0.02). Mean velopharyngeal contractile integral (VCI) (p?=?0.01) and mesopharynge...

Aggregation with fragment retransmission for very high-speed WLANs
(2009)

Abstract:
In upcoming very high-speed WLANs the physical layer (PHY) rate may reach 600 Mbps. To achieve high efficiency at the medium access control (MAC) layer, we identify fundamental properties that must be satisfied by any CSMA/CA based MAC layer and develop a novel scheme called Aggregation with Fragment Retransmission (AFR). In the AFR scheme, multiple packets are aggregated into and transmitted in a single large frame. If errors happen during the transmission, only the corrupted fragments of the large frame are retransmitted. An analytic model is developed to evaluate the throughput and delay performance of AFR over a noisy channel, and to compare AFR with competing schemes in the literature. Optimal frame and fragment sizes are calculated using this model. Transmission delays are minimised by using a zero-waiting mechanism where frames are transmitted immediately once the MAC wins a transmission opportunity. We prove that zero waiting can achieve maximum throughput. As a complement t...

Analysis and design of high order digital phase locked loops
(2008)
Daniels, Brian
Abstract:
The Phase Locked Loop (PLL) is an important component of many electronic devices; it can be employed as a frequency synthesizer, for clock data recovery, and as amplitude and frequency demodulators. It is an inherently nonlinear closed loop feedback system; the nonlinearity is due mainly to the fact that the feedback loop comparator exhibits quantization-like effects at its output. The consequence of this nonlinearity is a lack of understanding of the behaviour of the PLL loop, particularly the behaviour and stability of high order PLL systems. This thesis presents a new design technique for high order Digital PLL (DPLL)systems with a charge pump phase frequency detector component, offering an alternative to the common design practice which is to analyze the DPLL using a linearised model of the analogue PLL. The linear model can only be justified for low order DPLL systems that are close to lock. This is due to the fact that as the DPLL systems loop order and complexity increases th...

Sharp Rejection Techniques in High Frequency Active-RC LPF for UWB Applications
(2008)
Tuan-Phan, Anh; Farrell, Ronan; Gug-Lee, Sang
Abstract:
This paper describes a sharp-rejection technique in designing active-RC LPF for MB-OFDM UWB applications. Sharp rejection is attributed to the combination of different AC characteristic of three Biquads in series. A simple operational amplifier (Op-amp) is adopted to ensure high frequency and high linear performance for the designed filter. The cutoff frequency is 264MHz, with 13dB rejection at 290MHz and about 50dB at twice bandwith. the LPF is designed in 0.13um IBM CMOS process with pass-band ripple of less that 1dB, IIP3 is 23dBm while cnsuming 8.4mA from 1.5V supply.

An Efficient Parallel Structure for ΣΔ Modulators for use in High Speed Switching Power Amplifiers
(2007)
Farrell, Ronan
Abstract:
Switching amplifiers using Sigma-delta modulators have proven to be highly efficient but require high switching speeds. Implementing complete digital systems at the switching speed has prevented their use in higher speed applications. In this paper we propose a methodology for the parallelisation of sigma-delta modulators allowing for the partition of the switching amplifier into a low-speed and high speed sections. This will enable switching amplifiers to be used effectively at higher frequencies, and specifically for wireless applications.

Graphs as navigational infrastructure for high dimensional data spaces
(2011)
Hurley, Catherine B.; Oldford, R.W.
Abstract:
We propose using graph theoretic results to develop an infrastructure that tracks movement from a display of one set of variables to another. The illustrative example throughout is the real-time morphing of one scatterplot into another. Hurley and Oldford (2008a) made extensive use of the graph having variables as nodes and edges indicating a paired relationship between them. The present paper introduces several new graphs derivable from this one whose traversals can be described as particular movements through high dimensional spaces. These are connected to known results in graph theory and the graph theoretic results applied to the problem of visualizing high-dimensional data.

RT-WiFi: Real-Time High Speed Communication Protocol for Wireless Control Systems

Abstract:
Due to their enhanced mobility and reduced configuration and maintenance cost, wireless control systems (WCSs) are widely used in process and vibration control systems, on medical devices, unmanned vehicles and robotics. However, most literatures in WCSs focus on monitoring and low speed control, and less effort has been made on high speed WCSs. It is because most existing wireless communication protocols cannot provide real-time and reliable communication links with preferable high speed by taking energy saving into consideration.

Climate-driven trends in mean and high flows from a network of reference stations in Ireland
(2013)
Murphy, Conor; Harrigan, Shaun; Hall, Julia; Wilby, Robert L.
Abstract:
This paper introduces a reference hydrometric network for Ireland and examines the derived flow archive for evidence of climate-driven trends in mean and high river flows. The Mann-Kendall and Theil-Sen tests are applied to eight hydroclimatic indicators for fixed and variable (start and end date) records. Spatial coherence and similarities of trends with rainfall suggest they are climate driven; however, large temporal variability makes it difficult to discern widely-expected anthropogenic climate change signals at this point in time. Trends in summer mean flows and recent winter means are at odds with those expected for anthropogenic climate change. High-flow indicators show strong and persistent positive trends, are less affected by variability and may provide earlier climate change signals than mean flows. The results highlight the caution required in using fixed periods of record for trend analysis, recognizing the trade-off between record length, network density and geographic...

Metamorph: Real-Time High-Level Sound Transformations Based On A Sinusoids Plus Noise Plus Transients Model
(2012)
Glover, John C.; Lazzarini, Victor; Timoney, Joseph
Abstract:
Spectral models provide ways to manipulate musical audio signals that can be both powerful and intuitive, but high-level control is often required in order to provide flexible real-time control over the potentially large parameter set. This paper introduces Metamorph, a new open source library for high-level sound transformation. We describe the real-time sinusoids plus noise plus transients model that is used by Metamorph and explain the opportunities that it provides for sound manipulation.

Abstract:
This thesis explores the effects of the high-stakes examination systems in Ireland and Turkey on the teaching and learning of mathematics in post-primary education. The study comprised of three parts: an exploration of teachers’ views on the high-stakes examinations in their countries, a comparison of students’ attitudes and study methods, and a classification of examination questions from recent examination papers. Questionnaires were developed for teachers and students and administered in ten Turkish and thirteen Irish schools; in addition, 48 teachers were interviewed. The qualitative data from the teachers' questionnaire was analyzed using Grounded Theory. The pupils’ questionnaire was administered to more than 1200 students and comprised of Likert-type questions organized into several scales. The quantitative data from these questionnaires was analyzed using Rasch analysis as well as other standard statistical techniques. In the third strand of this thesis, the mathematics...

Abstract:
Performing rigorous technical and commercial assessment of wave energy converters (WECs) numerically, before engaging in expensive wave tank and open ocean tests, is vital for the economically successful development of prototypes. To that end, this paper presents a high-fidelity wave-to-wire simulation platform (the HiFiWEC), where a Computational Fluid Dynamics (CFD)-based numerical wave tank is coupled to a high-fidelity power take-off (PTO) model, which enables assessment of WEC performance with greater accuracy than with previous wave-to-wire approaches. A test case, simulating the performance of a heaving point absorber type WEC in realistic conditions, is presented and compared against traditional lower fidelity modelling methods. The WEC response is evaluated with a number of different approaches, including different techniques to model hydrodynamic wave-structure interactions and the power take-off system, and the benefits of the HiFiWEC are highlighted. The results highligh...

Abstract:
Details are presented of an atmospheric Cherenkov telescope for use in very high energy gamma-ray astronomy which consists of a cluster of 109 close-packed photomultiplier tubes at the focus of a 10 meter optical reflector. The images of the Cherenkov flashes generated both by gamma-ray and charged cosmic-ray events are digitized and recorded. Subsequent off-line analysis of the images improves the significance of the signal to noise ratio by a factor of 10 compared with non-imaging techniques.

Abstract:
A number of macrocyclic squaramide-containing receptors (MSQs) have been designed and synthesised and their interaction with a range of inorganic anions was studied in solution by 1H NMR spectroscopy and ESI-HRMS. The binding data revealed remarkable binding of sulfate in aqueous mixtures from 0.5 to 50% v/v H2O/DMSO-d6. The larger [3]-MSQs were found to better match the size and shape of the sulfate ion than the [2]-MSQs, providing high affinity and selectivity for sulfate while other tetrahedral divalent anions such as selenate, phosphate species and chromate have substantially lower binding affinities. In mixtures of anions mimicking the composition of either nuclear waste or plasma, the [3]-MSQs were still able to bind sulfate ions with high affinity.

Abstract:
Remote Sensing is a markable achievement in- last century. High resolution is a vital technol- ogy to digital image characteristics. Especially, in recent 20 years, digital technology promotes the development of spatial information field. As the increasing requirement of people, achieving high resolution images is urgent. For this target, we work from four parts: spatial resolution, ra- diant resolution, spectral resolution, temporal resolution and proposed schemes for each of them with different imaging manners, designed several prototype systems and carried out many experiments to verify their feasibilities.

Developing a road safety review tool to identify design standard and safety deficits on high risk road sections
(2016)

Abstract:
The ESReT (European Safety Review Tool) project has developed a tool to support the review of road sections that have been identified as ‘high risk’ according to network screening processes. The tool provides a methodology to practitioners for the collection and analysis of road attribute data using low cost, non-specialist equipment. The overall result is a consistent and repeatable approach to the investigation and assessment of high risk road sections. There are two main parts of the assessment performed by the tool. The first part is a comparison of road attributes against design standards; the optional second part is a comparison of road attributes against ‘safety rules’. The road design standard check allows road authorities to compare the attributes of existing heritage roads with current design standards. This allows road authorities to identify where, and in what way, modern design rules are not met. Various design standard attributes are included in the tool including: med...

Bi Film-Video World High and Low

Abstract:
This essay examines two recent U.S. films that explicitly connect art and women’s bisexuality: Kevin Smith’s Chasing Amy (1997) and Lisa Cholodenko’s High Art (1998). The affiliation between bisexuality and art reflects a paradox: an erotics of refusing distinctions, bisexuality acts as a metaphor for both the breakdown of sexual categories and the blending of high art and low entertainment. Yet bisexuals are subjects presumed to know; experimental, and, therefore, experienced, they are better equipped to make distinctions. In these films, one important aesthetic and sexual distinction revolves around the notion of the “real.”

Abstract:
Background: Labour market policy (LMP) and its implementation have undergone rapid change internationally in the last three decades with a continued trend towards active LMP. In Ireland however, this shift has been more recent with ongoing reforms since 2012 and a concomitant move toward active labour market ‘work-first’ policy design (i.e. whereby unemployed people are compulsorily required to work in return for their social welfare benefits). Labour market policies vary from those that require this compulsory approach to those which enable the unemployed to move towards sustainable quality work in the labour market through upskilling (human capital approach). Despite this, however, long-term unemployment—a major cause of poverty and social exclusion—remains high, while current employment support approaches aimed at sustainable re-employment are, arguably, unevaluated and under examined. This study examines the effectiveness of a new high support career guidance intervention in te...

The inherent jurisdiction of the Irish High Court: Interface with psychiatry

Abstract:
The term “inherent jurisdiction” refers to a set of default powers, usually not set out in statute, which enables a court to fulfil its roles. We discuss recently reported cases where such power has been exercised by the Irish High Court and what this means for psychiatrists in practice. These cases demonstrate that (a) the Irish High Court can be involved in decision-making where there is a lacuna in mental health legislation and a lack of mental capacity; (b) when a minor has been placed by the Court in a specialist facility in the UK and then attains the age of 18 years, decisions can be based on mental capacity but not on preventative detention on the basis of risk; (c) complexities arise when definitions of mental disorder vary between jurisdictions, especially when the Court orders involuntary detention in a case where statute would not ordinarily allow this; and (d) the appropriate route to seek decision-making for adults with mental incapacity is through Ireland's “Ward...
