Maximizing the value of the software development process by game theoretic analysis
(2010)
Yilmaz, Murat; O'Connor, Rory
Abstract:
In this paper, we introduce the novel approach of employing the economic mechanism design concept in the software development process, and investigate methods to create and adjust the incentives and disincentives of the process and align them with the motivations of the participants in order to maximize the delivered value of a software project. We consider that software development can be viewed as an economic activity inside an information exchange economy, and therefore, based on game theoretic principles, our aim is to create a people centric process model for software development.

Towards the identification of the influence of SPI on the successful evolution of software SMEs
(2010)
Clarke, Paul; O'Connor, Rory
Abstract:
Software development requires multi-stage processes in order to organise the software development effort. Each software development project should implement a development process that is appropriate to the project setting. Since business needs and technologies are subject to change, software process improvement (SPI) actions are required so as to harmonise the process with the emerging business and technology needs. SPI frameworks such as CMMI and ISO-15504 have been designed to support SPI efforts. While SPI frameworks have been shown to be beneficial for large organisations, they are not widely implemented in small to medium sized enterprises (SMEs), where evidence of the positive influence of SPI on business success is weak. This paper is proposing that a new measure, the SPI Key Performance Indicator (SPI-KPI), is developed to investigate the association between SPI and business success in SMEs, with the objective of demonstrating that SPI is positively associated with business ...

Published Version
This paper proposes a methodology for improved power controller switching in mobile Body Area Networks operating within the ambient healthcare environment. The work extends Anti-windup and Bumpless transfer results to provide a solution to the ambulatory networking problem that ensures sufficient biometric data can always be regenerated at the base station. The solution thereby guarantees satisfactory quality of service for healthcare providers. Compensation is provided for the nonlinear hardware constraints that are a typical feature of the type of network under consideration and graceful performance degradation in the face of hardware output power saturation is demonstrated, thus conserving network energy in an optimal fashion.

Towards Non-invasive Adaptive Meta-Cognitive Support for Online Training
(2011)
WADE, VINCENT PATRICK; DAGGER, DECLAN; CONLAN, OWEN; MOORE, ADAM
Abstract:
Online training is an increasingly important facet of the skills enhancing portfolio of any organization and has an especial place within life-long learning, career development and other self-regulated adult learning. We here present an overview of work towards developing online training, which is augmented by contextual cues, training which is personalized and adapted, in real-time, towards the learning objectives of the user, whilst supporting a wide range of meta-cognitive activities. This work brings technologies developed for the fantastical scenarios of serious gaming into the 'real world' - we also begin to address some of the underlying challenges in this transition.

"I’m Eating a Sandwich in Glasgow": Modeling locations with tweets
(2011)
Kinsella, Sheila; Murdock, Vanessa; OHare, Neil
Abstract:
Social media such as Twitter generate large quantities of data about what a person is thinking and doing in a partic- ular location. We leverage this data to build models of locations to improve our understanding of a user’s geographic context. Understanding the user’s geographic context can in turn enable a variety of services that allow us to present information, recommend businesses and services, and place advertisements that are relevant at a hyper-local level. In this paper we create language models of locations using coordinates extracted from geotagged Twitter data. We model locations at varying levels of granularity, from the zip code to the country level. We measure the accuracy of these models by the degree to which we can predict the location of an individual tweet, and further by the accuracy with which we can predict the location of a user. We find that we can meet the performance of the industry standard tool for pre- dicting both the tweet and the user at the country,...

Abstract:
This study examined the 1:1 cocrystal benzamide:dibenzyl sulfoxide, comprising the poorly water soluble dibenzyl sulfoxide (DBSO) and the more soluble benzamide (BA), to establish if this cocrystal shows advantages in terms of solubility and dissolution in comparison to its pure components and to a physical mixture. Solubility studies were performed by measuring DBSO solubility as a function of BA concentration, and a ternary phase diagram was constructed. Dissolution was examined through intrinsic dissolution studies. Solid state characterisation was carried out by powder X-ray diffraction (PXRD), energy-dispersive X-ray diffraction (EDX), infra-red spectroscopy (ATR-FTIR) and thermal analysis. DBSO solubility was increased by means of complexation with BA. For the cocrystal, the solubility of both components was decreased in comparison to pure components. The cocrystal was identified as metastable and incongruently saturating. Dissolution studies revealed that dissolution of DBSO ...

Model-driven engineering of planning and optimisation algorithms for pervasive computing environments
(2011)
CAHILL, VINNY; HARRINGTON, ANTHONY CHRISTOPHER
Abstract:
This paper presents a model-driven approach to developing pervasive computing applications that exploits designtime information to support the engineering of planning and optimisation algorithms that reflect the presence of uncertainty, dynamism and complexity in the application domain. In particular the task of generating code to implement planning and optimisation algorithms in pervasive computing domains is addressed. We present a layered domain model containing a set of objectoriented specifications for modelling physical and sensor/actuator infrastructure and state-space information. Our model-driven engineering approach is implemented in two transformation algorithms. The initial transformation parses the domain model and generates a planning model for the application being developed that encodes an application’s states, actions and rewards. The second transformation parses the planning model and selects and seeds a planning or optimisation algorithm for use in the application...

Keyimages ontologized for the Cultural Masses

Abstract:
Humans name things. Naming is essential for pointing to recognizable images, sounds, and emotions. In every culture throughout history certain stereotypical images have emerged to indicate grounded truths for the people. Today, where images are ubiquitous in their billions, available for use at a price, it becomes important to provide a balancing counterpart of high quality, royalty free images, under an appropriate creative commons licence. In addition to the usual folksonomical tagging it is recommended to have, in addition, a formal support vocabulary for which there is an appropriate formal reasoning system. In this paper we continue the pragmatic exposition of the CIDOC Conceptual Reference Model, supported by the Erlangen OWL encoding, and exercised through the Protégé editor. Examples of keyimages are drawn from Television programs, online Art Galleries, and ordinary printed photographs. Vocabulary data are normally provided in both Bulgarian and English. Data in other langua...

'Bringing Geopolitics Back In': Exploring the Security Dimension of the 2004 Eastern Enlargement of the European Union
(2006)
O'Brennan, John
Abstract:
Notwithstanding the functional and technocratic basis of the European integration process, and the fact that the accession criteria hardly mention security issues, the 2004 eastern enlargement brought to the forefront of EU politics important geopolitical and security issues. Eastern enlargement came on to the agenda of the EU in the wake of 1989s peaceful revolutions in Central and Eastern Europe. Security and geopolitics mattered to the decision taken by the EU to embark on expansion in the early 1990s, and thereafter security issues remained prominent in enlargement debates. This article seeks to analyse the most important geopolitical issues which eastern enlargement brought to the fore. In exploring the geopolitical dimension of the eastern enlargement process the article foregrounds some key issues including: the potential power realignments in Europe triggered by enlargement, the EU relationship with Russia and its importance to the unfolding of the enlargement process, and h...

Developing a Framework for Assessing Innovative Capability Within Complex Organizations
(2009)
McLaughlin, Stephen
Abstract:
Purpose: This paper outlines the initial conceptual development of a research project currently being undertaken by the author with IBM. The paper looks to address how service-orientated organizations can assess their overall ‘innovative capability’ against four main criteria: their external operating environment, management practice, organizational culture, and technology. Design/methodology/approach: The research will follow a critical research approach, with the initial theory concerning the breakdown of the criteria for innovative capability being developed from a case study on how the migration to a service-orientated environment in creating new challenges for the stimulation of the organizations innovative capability. The emergent framework will then be tested, and refined through a series of practical assessments within other organizations. Findings: This research project is only at its first stage, and as such as emergent framework has been developed, but not fully t...

Soft Tissue Cutting with Ultrasonic Mechanical Waveguides
(2011)
Wylie, Mark; McGuinness, Garrett; Gavin, Graham
Abstract:
<p>The use of ultrasonic vibrations transmitted via small diameter wire waveguides represents a technology that has potential for minimally invasive procedures in surgery. This form of energy delivery results in distal tip mechanical vibrations with amplitudes of vibration of up to 50 μm and at frequencies between 20-50 kHz commonly reported. This energy can then be used by micro-cutting surgical tools and end effectors for a range of applications such as bone cutting, cement removal in joint revision surgery and soft tissue cutting. One particular application which has gained regulatory approval in recent years is in the area of cardiovascular surgery in the removal of calcified atherosclerotic plaques and chronic total occlusions. This paper builds on previous work that was focused on the ultrasonic perforation of soft vascular tissue using ultrasonically activated mechanical waveguides and the applied force required to initiate failure in soft tissue when compared with non-...

Drift Detection Using Uncertainty Distribution Divergence
(2011)
Lindstrom, Patrick; Mac Namee, Brian; Delany, Sarah Jane
Abstract:
<p>Concept drift is believed to be prevalent inmost data gathered from naturally occurring processes andthus warrants research by the machine learning community. There are a myriad of approaches to concept drift handlingwhich have been shown to handle concept drift with varyingdegrees of success.</p> <p>However, most approaches make the keyassumption that the labelled data will be available at nolabelling cost shortly after classification, an assumption whichis often violated. The high labelling cost in many domainsprovides a strong motivation to reduce the number of labelledinstances required to handle concept drift. Explicit detectionapproaches that do not require labelled instances to detectconcept drift show great promise for achieving this.</p> <p>Ourapproach Confidence Distribution Batch Detection (CDBD)provides a signal correlated to changes in concept without usinglabelled data. We also show how this signal combined with atrigger and a rebuild po...

Surgical Cutting and Ablation by Energy Based Devices: Principles and Applications
(2011)
McGuinness, Garrett; McGeough, Joseph A; Gavin, Graham; O'Daly, Brendan
Abstract:
<p>Advances in ultrasound, radiofrequency, and water jet systems are facilitating their increased use in new medical ablation or cutting applications in fields as diverse as cardiology, orthopaedics, ophthalmology, dermatology, oncology and neurosurgery. These methods involve controlled alteration or destruction of tissues via the application of thermal, electrical or kinetic energy. This market segment is characterised by advanced devices capable of heating or cooling tissue from -200°C to 400°C, or inducing vibrations of up to 60 kHz to cause tissue damage. The medical conditions targeted primarily pertain to chronic and age-related diseases, but elective and cosmetic procedures are also addressed. Medical ablation research has the potential for significant clinical and commercial gains. New capabilities in terms of tissue ablation technologies can enable new medical procedures, affording opportunities for design creativity and entrepreneurship and ultimately delivering a he...

The writing skills course as an introduction to critical practice for larger business undergraduate classes
(2011)
Cullen, John G.
Abstract:
Calls for greater levels of critical thought in business and management education increased in the wake of the global financial crisis. Many business educators articulated a need to develop students who engage with theory at the deepest level in order to cultivate more socially engaged managers and management thinkers. These calls surfaced at a time when organisations voiced concerns about the quality of the basic literacy and numeracy skills of graduates. It is often difficult to introduce students to critical practice at the undergraduate level due to larger class sizes, with the result that deeper theoretical engagement is often postponed until postgraduate stages of business education. This paper discusses the findings from an action research project conducted on a critical writing skills project which aimed to introduce a group of 95 first-year business students to the concept of critical practice through their written assignments. The research unearthed some opportunities, cha...

Reporting empirical research in open source software: the state of practice.
(2012)
Stol, Klaas-Jan; Ali Babar, Muhammad
Abstract:
Background: The number of reported empirical studies of Open Source Software (OSS) has continuously been increasing. However, there has been no effort to systematically review the state of the practice of reporting empirical studies of OSS with respect to the recommended standards of performing and reporting empirical studies in software engineering. It is important to understand, how to report empirical studies of OSS in order to make them useful for practitioners and researchers. Research aim: The aim of our research is to gain insights in the state of the practice of reporting empirical studies of OSS in order to identify the gaps to be filled for improving the quality of evidence being provided for OSS. Method: To that end, we decided to systematically review the empirical studies of OSS. A total of 63 papers reporting empirical studies were selected from the four editions of the Proceedings of the International Conference on Open Source Systems. The data were extracted and synt...

Culture in the Rise of Tiger Economies: Scottish Expatriates in Dublin and the 'Creative Class' Thesis
(2006)
Boyle, Mark
Abstract:
This article evaluates the contributions which Richard Florida's seminal ‘creative class’ thesis might make to ongoing efforts to re-inscribe ‘culture’ back into political economy explanations of the rise of Tiger economies. It reflects upon the value of reconsidering both the role of skilled migrants in Tiger states and the factors which attract skilled migrants to these economies in the first instance. Based upon analyses of a series of focus groups conducted with Scottish expatriates currently working in Dublin, the article specifically attempts to gauge how far the creative class thesis can be stretched to account for the locational preferences of talented migrants. Whilst Florida's work undoubtedly sheds light on aspects of expatriate existence which might not otherwise have been obvious, its ability to account for the relationships which have existed between technology, talent and tolerance in the Celtic Tiger must be questioned. Moreover, if political economy and Fl...

The Valuation Effects of Cross-Listing Abroad for Irish Firms
(2009)
O'Connor, Thomas G.
Abstract:
The number of Irish firms cross-listed on international exchanges remains low, relative to other countries. However, as a proportion of those firms eligible to list, Irish firms are, relative to others, more likely to list abroad. Surprisingly, Doidge, Karolyi and Stulz (2004) show that in 1997 US exchange-traded Irish firms are worth less than domestic Irish firms, a result at odds with what we might have expected and with the predictions of the legal bonding hypothesis. In this paper, I show that listing abroad, in both London (AIM listing only) and the US (both Level 1 and Level 2), does enhance the value of lrish firms. I find that cross-listing leads to an average 'within-firm' change in the value of Level 2 firms in the region of 19.65 per cent (using market-to-book of assets). As expected, the change in value experienced by Level 1 firms is smaller (14.93 per cent). Like Doidge, Karolyi and Stulz (2009), 1 do not find that an ordinary listing in London enhances valu...

FDI versus Exports in a General Equilibrium Ricardian Model
(2011)
Noguera, José de Jesus; Pecchenino, Rowena A.
Abstract:
In a two-country general equilibrium Ricardian model, we propose a model in which countries compete in the same sectors via exports or FDI. Factor endowments are important in that they affect relative wages and the range of goods countries produce. Effects of factor endowments on FDI depend on the interaction of FDI and trade barriers. Transportation costs do favor FDI at the expense of exports, but reduce trade and investment. Finally, in contrast to the new trade theory, across industries, it is the relatively less productive firms that engage in FDI while the relatively more productive firms export.

In this paper, we investigate the parameters under- pinning our previously presented system for detecting unusual events in surveillance applications [1]. The system identifies anomalous events using an unsupervised data-driven approach. During a training period, typical activities within a surveilled environment are modeled using multi-modal sensor readings. Significant deviations from the established model of regular activity can then be flagged as anomalous at run-time. Using this approach, the system can be deployed and automatically adapt for use in any environment without any manual adjustment. Experiments carried out on two days of audio-visual data were performed and evaluated using a manually annotated ground- truth. We investigate sensor fusion and quantitatively evaluate the performance gains over single modality models. We also investigate different formulations of our cluster-based model of usual scenes as well as the impact of dynamic thresholding on identifying anomal...

Abstract:
<p><strong>Purpose –</strong> In today’s competitive scenario, effective supply chain management is increasingly dependant on third party logistics (3PL) companies’ capabilities and performance. The dissemination of information technology (IT) has contributed to change the supply chain role of 3PL companies and IT is considered an important element influencing performance of modern logistics companies. Therefore, the purpose of this paper is to explore the relationship between IT and 3PLs’ performance, assuming that logistics capabilities play a mediating role in this relationship.</p> <p><strong>Design/methodology/approach –</strong> Empirical evidence based on a questionnaire survey conducted on a sample of logistics service companies operating in the Italian market was used to test a conceptual resource based view (RBV) framework linking IT adoption, logistics capabilities and firm performance. Factor analysis and ordinary least square (O...

Abstract:
Quoting is a common practice in online conversations, notably in email discussions and bulletin boards. Despite many applications that offer special functionalities to handle them, there is no agreement on how to semantically represent these quotes, so that they could be queried and analysed uniformly whatever the original application is. While various Semantic Web models, notably SIOC, have become popular for interlinking, exporting and exchanging information about online communities and their conversations, they do not provide means to model such quotes. In this paper, we present (i) an OWL2 extension of SIOC for representing quotes and (ii) a framework for automated quotes extraction from email archives. In addition, we demonstrate the utility of such formal representation for querying email archives with finergrained queries and for mining social networks based on the argumentative structure of email conversations.

The effect of the VOF-CSF static contact angle boundary condition on the dynamics of sliding and bouncing elliposidal bubbles.

Abstract:
The staticcontactangle is the only empiricism introduced in a Volume of Fluid–Continuum Surface Force (VOF–CSF) model of bubbly flow. Although it has previously been shown to have a relatively limited effect on the accuracy of velocity and shape predictions in the case of large gas bubblessliding under inclined walls (e.g. Cook and Behnia, 2001), it may have a more determining influence on the numerical prediction of the dynamics of smaller ellipsoidalbubbles which were shown by Tsao and Koch (1997) to bounce repeatedly when sliding under inclined walls at certain wall inclinations. The present paper reports on the influence of surface tension and the staticcontactangle on the dynamics of an ellipsoidal air bubble of equivalent diameter De = 3.4 mm. The bubble Eötvös and Morton numbers are Eo = 1.56 and Mo = 2 × 10−11 respectively. The computational results are achieved with a Piecewise Linear Construction (PLIC) of the interface and are reviewed with reference to experimental measu...
