Caring for Seniors With Alzheimer's Disease: Canadian Institute for Health Information
(2010)
Canadian Institute for Health Information
Abstract:
Caring for Seniors In 2007-2008, one in five seniors (20%) in Canada receiving long-term home care had a diagnosis of Alzheimer's disease or other dementia. Nearly one in six (17%) of these clients with dementia were suffering from moderate to severe impairment in cognition and daily functioning yet still managed to remain at home. This study from the Canadian Institute for Health Information also found that one in six (17%) seniors with dementia living in residential care facilities (such as nursing or long-term care homes) in 2008-2009 had relatively low levels of impairment or could still perform basic functions quite well on their own. The odds of a senior with low impairment being placed in residential care were seven times more likely if the senior had a tendency to wander. Marital status was also a factor in determining whether a senior with low impairment was newly admitted to a care facility rather than at home with home care.

Primary Health Care: a review.
(1988)
Tansley, T.
Abstract:
"It is essential that 'the Department produces soon a plan for the development and implementation of an effective and integrated system of community care services with the emphasis on the development of an effective primary health care system. I have decided to resign responsibility for the production of that plan to you. The plan should be prioritised and costed with an indication of the critical timescale. In scope it should cover the medical. paramedical. nursing and welfare services required to maintain treat and care for patients in their own homes. where this is possible and appropriate.

Guidelines for the control of Methicillin Resistant Staphylococcus Aureus MRSA in district/community hospitals. special hospitals and nursing residential homes.
(1996)
Department of Health (DoH)
Abstract:
The Minister for Health's Strategy for effective health care in the 1990s - 'Shaping a Healthier Future' - has emphasised the need for quality of service as one of its key principles. Hospital acquired infection, including MRSA, is a potential indicator of quality of care and should be an integral part of the clinical audit process. The terms of reference of this committee, which has drawn up these guidelines, was to identify the extent to which MRSA is a problem in the Irish Health Care Setting and to establish priorities for its control. The committee felt that it was important to stress the need for Infection Control Committees and the role of Infection Control Officers .

'I'd prefer to stay at home but I don't have a choice': Meeting Older People's Preference for Care: Policy, but what about practice?
(2016)
Donnelly, Sarah; O'Brien, Marita; Begley, Emer; Brennan, John
Abstract:
Background: Research indicates that most older people would prefer to live in their own homes and have support services provided to enable them to do so for as long as possible (Barry, 2010). However, there is an evident tension between this objective and the promotion of 'ageing in place', with the consequent heavy reliance on the Nursing Home Support Scheme (NHSS) in the Irish context (Donnelly and O¿Loughlin, 2015). This study set out to explore the perspectives and experiences of social workers in Republic of Ireland working with older people to identify issues/barriers in accessing community supports and to examine older people's involvement in decision-making, including those with a cognitive impairment/dementia. Methods: A mixed methods study design was adapted and the study consisted of two phases: Phase 1 consisted of an on-line survey of social workers using Survey Monkey. Phase 2 consisted of in-depth semi-structured telephone interviews with at least two s...
