Engaging life in two Irish nursing home units for people with dementia: Quantitative comparisons before and after implementing household environments.
(2012)
Morgan-Brown, Mark; Newton, Rita; Ormerod, Marcus
Abstract:
Objectives: This study compares the Social Engagement and Interactive Occupation of residents with dementia in two Irish nursing homes, before and after conversion to a household model environment. The changes were an open plan design and a functioning unit kitchen, supported by a homemaker role and operational policies which reduced task-based work in favour of person-centred care offering choice. Method: A snapshot observation method was used to obtain quantitative data of resident activity using the Assessment Tool for Occupation and Social Engagement (ATOSE). Residents were assessed for four hours, on seven different weekdays, over a six-week period both pre- and post-renovation. The exception to this was the assessment of the traditional model unit (TMU) for Nursing Home 1 which was reduced to four days due to the early start of the building work. Results: The results were consistent for both nursing homes and data were aggregated. Residents spent more time in the communal livi...

Residential services for the elderly: annual report: 1995.
(1996)
Mid-Western Health Board (MWHB)
Abstract:
This report reviews activities and development,; in the Board's Residential Service for the Elderly during 1995. Summary data is included in respect of Private Nursing Homes and Acute Services for the Elderly. The in-patient service elements are treated separately. Each pan has a summary of key points which are followed by the relevant activity data. At year end 1995, there were 32 Acute Assessment Beds for the Elderly in the General Hospitals. The Special Hospitals provided 53 Rehabilitation Beds, 35 Respite Care beds, 824 Extended Care Beds and 128 Beds designated for Social Needs. The number of approved Private Nursing Homes Beds was 191. Overall. admissions to Residential Services increased. Short-stay and respite Care contributed significantly to this change. This is reflected in the number of persons discharged with less than three months stay in care. The largest in-patient group is in the 75-84 years age band. There is an increase in the number of patients who are 85 ye...

Audit shows stroke deaths down, but improvements still needed
(2016)
Lynch, Pricilla
Abstract:
The death rate from stroke in Ireland has been cut by more than a quarter and the rate of direct discharge to nursing homes has almost halved in the last seven years, a national audit of acute stroke services carried out by the Irish Heart Foundation (IHF) and HSE has revealed. The audit, published earlier this year, showed that in-hospital mortality has been reduced from 19 per cent to 14 per cent, whilst eight per cent of patients are now being discharged to nursing homes, compared to 15 per cent in 2008 when the previous national audit was conducted. Around 7,000 people are hospitalised due to stroke in Ireland each year. The annual death toll of just below 2,000 makes stroke Ireland’s third biggest killer disease after cancer and heart disease.

A review of safe-staffing models and their applicability to care homes
(2018)
Mitchell, Gary; Cousins, Carol; Burrows, Ruth; Cousins, Gary
Abstract:
Presently, there are a range of evidence-based staffing tools that have been used to inform nursing, midwifery and health care capacity. These tools are designed to be used with professional judgement and include frameworks such as Rhys Hearn, the National Services Scotland Care Home Staffing Project, a variety of Royal College of Nursing Tool Kits including the Older People in Hospital's tool and the only National Institute of Clinical Excellence approved safe-staffing tool, Shelford's Safer Nursing Tool. These safe-staffing tools are used to score a patient's or resident's level of dependency across a number of domains, for example a patient/resident's ability to wash, dress, mobilise or fulfil their own elimination needs. While these tools have been beneficial with regards to informing staff levels there are a number of limitations that are important to highlight. Succinctly, most are not readily applicable to care home settings nor do they focus on more ...

Older person services: HSE Midlands report on the consultation process. May - July 2012
(2012)
Health Service Executive (HSE)
Abstract:
This is the summary of the engagement with residents and next of kin as well as interested parties and the public in the consultation process for Older Person Services for the Midlands. In particular the potential closure of two community nursing units, Abbeyleix Community Nursing Unit and St Brigids Hospital Shaen. In October and November 2011, the HSE announced the closure of St. Brigids Hospital Shaen and Abbeyleix Community Nursing Unit, Abbeyleix. During the course of a judicial review, the HSE set aside its decision regarding Shaen and Abbeyleix. Instead the HSE gave a commitment to undertake a consultation exercise, in particular with the residents and next of kin with the public and other interested parties regarding the future of the two units. In May 2012, the HSE published the Older Persons Services HSE Midlands Information and Consultation Document. This was the first document that was undertaken to comply with the HSE national policy titled HSE Protocol Consultation Pol...
