The evolution and space weather effects of solar coronal holes
(2011)
Krista, Larisza D.
Abstract:
THESIS 9170
In recent years the role of space weather forecasting has grown tremendously as our society increasingly relies on satellite dependent technologies. As solar activity is the foremost important aspect of space weather, the forecasting of are and CME related transient geomagnetic storms has become a primary initiative. Minor magnetic storms caused by coronal holes (CHs) have also proven to be of high importance due to their long lasting and recurrent geomagnetic effects. In order to forecast CH related geomagnetic storms, the author developed an automated CH detection package (Coronal Hole Automated Recognition and Monitoring; CHARM) to replace the user-dependent CH boundary intensity thresholding methods used in previous studies. CHARM uses a local intensity thresholding method to identify low intensity regions in extreme ultraviolet or X-ray images. CHs are known to be regions of ?open? magnetic field and predominant polarity, which allowed the differentiation of CHs...

EUV and X-ray spectroscopy of the active sun

Abstract:
THESIS 9325
This thesis strives to improve our understanding of solar activity, specifically the behaviour of solar flares and coronal mass ejections. An investigation into the hydrodynamic evolution of a confined solar are was carried out using RHESSI, CDS, GOES and TRACE. Evidence for pre-are heating, explosive and gentle chromospheric evaporation and loop draining were observed in the data. The observations were compared to a 0-D hydrodynamic model, EBTEL, to aid interpretation. This led to the conclusion that the flare was not heated purely by non-thermal beam heating as previously believed, but also required direct heating of the plasma. An observational investigation in to the initiation mechanism of a coronal mass ejection and eruptive are was then carried out, again utilising observations from a wide range of spacecraft: MESSENGER/SAX, RHESSI, EUVI, Cor1 and Cor2. Observations provided evidence of CME triggering by internal tether-cutting and not by breakout reconnection...

Fields and flares : understanding the complex magnetic topologies of solar active regions
(2013)
Murray, Sophie A.
Abstract:
THESIS 9979
Sunspots are regions of decreased brightness on the visible surface of the Sun (photosphere) that are associated with strong magnetic fields. They have been found to be locations associated with solar flares, which occur when energy stored in sunspot magnetic fields is suddenly released. The processes involved in flaring and the link between sunspot magnetic fields and flares is still not fully understood, and this thesis aims to gain a better understanding of these topics. The magnetic field evolution of a number of sunspot regions is examined using high spatial resolution data from the Hinode spacecraft. Photospheric magnetic field data is first investigated, and significant increases in negative vertical field strength, negative vertical current density, and field inclination angle towards the vertical are observed just hours before a flare occurs, which is on much shorter timescales than previously studied. These parameters then return to their pre-are ?quiet? st...

Fields, fractals and flares: characterising magnetic complexity in solar active regions
(2009)
Conlon, Paul A.
Abstract:
THESIS 9195
The main drivers of space weather, solar flares and coronal mass ejections, are thought to originate from active regions on the surface of the Sun. The mechanisms by which active regions produce these eruptive events remains unclear. In this thesis, numerous mathematical methods are developed to characterise the complexity of active region magnetic fields on the Sun. In the first section of the thesis, a box-counting method was used to measure the temporal evolution of the multifractal parameters of a sample of active regions. These results are compared to other multi-scale methods and changes in the temporal evolution of the multifractal spectrum are found to be associated with a regions flaring potential. As an expansion of the box-counting method, a wavelet-based multifractal method, the wavelet transform modulus methods (WTMM), was similarly used to characterise the changing properties of active region magnetic fields. A study of the multifractal properties of ac...

Red giant mass-loss : studying evolved stellar winds with FUSE and HST / STIS

Abstract:
THESIS 7951
The changes that a star undergoes during the dying process are the most dramatic of its lifetime. These changes result in the most important interactions between a star and its environment, indeed it is in this area of research that some of the most challenging astrophysical problems still remain. For most stars, mass-loss becomes significant when they approach the end of their lives and enter the red giant evolutionary phase. This mass is lost in the form of a relatively dense and slow-moving wind which enriches the interstellar medium with material that has been processed inside the star and which is required for the formation of new stars and planets. However, despite the importance and ubiquity of these winds much remains unknown about the outflow conditions and characteristics and, furthermore, the physical processes which drive the mass-loss are unknown. Indeed, the mass-loss question remains arguably the most important outstanding problem of stellar astrophysi...

The physico-chemical properties of fullerenes and porphyrin derivatives deposited on conducting surfaces
(2014)
Murphy, Barry E.
Abstract:
THESIS 10367
In this thesis, three organic molecules are examined on three distinct surfaces by a variety of surface science techniques, foremost among them being scanning tunneling microscopy (STM). When deposited on the W02/W(110) surface, C60 fullerenes self-assemble into islands which grow from the substrate?s inner step edges, forming a close- packed monolayer. At some bias voltages, chains of molecules sit topologically lower in height than others, because they lie in the grooves between the WO2 nanorows. When the sample is imaged at room temperature, all C60 are spinning too fast for the STM to resolve, and so appear as featureless spheres. However, when cooled to 78K, the molecules? motion is frozen and their inner orbital structure can be seen.

Self-assembled arrays of magnetic nanostructures on morphologically patterned semiconductor substrates
(2014)

Abstract:
THESIS 10398
This thesis deals with the formation of morphological patterns on single-crystal semi-conductor surfaces via self-assembly processes, followed by the subsequent fabrication of magnetic nanostructures whose dimensions are defined by the underlying template. Stepped surfaces on Si (Hi) were achieved by high temperature DC annealing of vicinal Si templates which causes the atomic steps to form step-bunches and/or facets. In particular, for templates annealed with the current directed in the ascending step direction it was shown that the cooling rate from the annealing temperature can be used as a precise control of step periodicity. A shallow angle deposition technique was used to create ordered rows of magnetic nanowires on the step-bunched Si templates, whose dimensions are determined by the size of the underlying steps as well as the duration and angle of deposition.

Abstract:
THESIS 7581
Organic semiconductor molecules are often employed as a thin film interlayer to improve electronic and optoelectronic devices. The characterisation of the interface is thus important to understand the physical properties between the organic thin film and the inorganic semiconductor substrate. Also the orientation of the molecules within the film can be of importance.

Characterization of single-mode laser and tunable laser array based on etched high order surface gratings
(2015)

Abstract:
THESIS 10533
Wavelength tunable single-mode semiconductor lasers play an essential role in modern optical communication systems. They are also rapidly replacing fixed-wavelength light sources in dense wavelength-division-multiplexing (DWDM) systems, which will significantly reduce the system size and cost. The optical communication industry demands light sources with relatively small volume, low inventory cost and high manufacturing yield process. Therefore, laser diodes along with high power, stable operation and narrow linewidth should have simple fabrication process and high yield. Up to now conventional distributed feedback (DFB) and distributed Bragg reflector (DBR) lasers achieved great success in terms of stable operation, high power and wide tuning range. However, these lasers require complex fabrication steps and high resolution processing by using e-beam lithography which is time consuming and an expensive process. Previously it was demonstrated that single-mode operat...

Magnetic semiconductors for spin electronics

Abstract:
THESIS 9346
The development of the relatively new field of spin electronics is based on the possibility of manipulating the spin of the electron through a structure. If one aspect is to develop new device architecture to inject, transmit, and detect spin polarised current, the materials involved in the fabrication of these structures plays a major role. In fact, if most of the standard electronic devices have been successfully translated in spin-based electronic devices, the magnetic bipolar transistor has not been demonstrated. The major obstacle for the construction of such device is the lack of a ferromagnetic semiconductor that can be bipolar. Other materials such as half metals have been studied extensively as potential spin polariser. The experiments described in this thesis are aimed to synthesise and characterise compoimds that have a strong potential to be integrated in spin electronic structures. It includes materials with a high Curie temperature, metallic conduction ...

Electron and spin injection in short-channel organic semiconducting devices

Abstract:
THESIS 9500
The realization of an active device that combines electric control of the source-drain current, as in transistors, with the memory effect of spin valves, has long been sought for the next generation spin electronics. The development of the field depends upon the existence of materials and structures that may be used as effective spin-polarized current injectors, transmitters, manipulators and detectors. Spin injection into semiconductors at a contact with a ferromagnetic metal is one of the possibilities that are currently being explored. The experiments described in this thesis are devised to explore the problem of spin injection into organic semiconductor at the metal /organic interface. In the first chapter, the theory of Schottky junctions and tunneling contact is presented; experimental results on various approaches towards the detection of spin-polarization using Schottky barriers are then presented, followed by the illustration of the models to describe charge...

Magnetization processes and low frequency fluctuations in micromagnetic structures
(2010)
Diao, Zhu
Abstract:
THESIS 9429
The study presented in this thesis is concerned with low frequency fluctuations in magnetic systems. Three different systems were investigated. The first system is (CoFe/Pt)n multilayers patterned into micrometer scale Hall bars. Low frequency magnetic fluctuations in the active volume were probed by anomalous Hall effect. Magnetic noise was only observed during magnetization switching. It was shown that 1/f? noise spectrum, with ?~2, dominates when at the macroscopic nucleation field, and close to negative saturation when domains annihilate. This is attributed to the irreversible magnetization switching and Barkhausen jumps. While in the slanted region of the hysteresis curve, a stationary 1/f noise spectrum was observed. This fluctuation is identified as the result of superposition a large number of reversible excursions of domain wall segments, which are roughly a hundred nanometers in length. First-order reversal curves have also been measured for the same sample...

Magnetic fields imposed on electrochemical cells have been shown to have dramatic effects on electrodeposits ranging from surface morphology, crystal structure, deposition rate, alloy composition and magnetic properties. To further illuminate the effects of magnetic fields a number of electrochemical systems were studied ranging from metal deposition in uniform magnetic fields, organic liquid-liquid systems, and patterned metal deposits by permanent magnet arrays. Lorentz force induced magneto-convection was observed to dominate during metal electrodeposition and corrosion, enhancing the mass transport of ions by thinning the diffusion layer. Using AC impedance methods the double layer and charge transfer kinetics were probed in a model one electron transfer system. The imposition of a magnetic field was observed to alter the structure of the double layer and the measured apparent kinetics of the system. No true magnetic shift in kinetics was observed, rather all the...
