Profiling the Mental Health Needs of a Youth Population With View to Informing Programme Planning in a Local Community-Based Youth Cafe
(2007)
O'Donoghue, Brid
Abstract:
The aim of this study was to develop a mental health profile on the population of young people in Elphin, Co. Roscommon. It also looked at the specific types of coping strategies and the relationship of those coping strategies to various levels of mental health. A focus group of six students was also carried out to gather recommendations for the organisation and running of the youth cafe. The participants involved were 112 students from each school year in Elphin Community College, with an age range of 12-18, with a mean age of 14.6 (SD = 1.86), unbalanced for gender. Each participant completed a set of questionnaires comprised of the Strengths and Difficulties Questionnaire, the 12 item General Health Questionnaire, the Coping Inventory for Stressful Situation, the 21 item Depression Anxiety Stress Scales, and the Youth Self Report. Results found 10.7% of students presented with very good mental health, 72.3% had normal levels and 17% were found to have poor mental health. All thre...

How Much Is That in Dog Years? The Advent of Canine Population Genomics
(2014)
BRADLEY, DANIEL
Abstract:
ABSTRACT The authors comment on two studies that analyzed multiple genomes of dogs and wolves. The studies reached different conclusions about the date and population effects, a disparity attributed to reliance on molecular evolutionary rates that differ by an order of magnitude. The results of the first study are said to indicate a more complex pattern of amylase copy number variation in dogs and wolves reflecting humans' relationship with dogs, but may not have resulted during early domestication

Dispersal capacity predicts both population genetic structure and species richness in reef fishes
(2014)
BUCKLEY, YVONNE
Abstract:
Dispersal is a fundamental species characteristic that should directly affect both rates of gene flow among spatially distributed populations and opportunities for speciation. Yet no single trait associated with dispersal has been demonstrated to affect both micro- and macroevolutionary patterns of diversity across a diverse biological assemblage. Here, we examine patterns of genetic differentiation and species richness in reef fishes, an assemblage of over 7,000 species comprising approximately one-third of the extant bony fishes and over one-tenth of living vertebrates. In reef fishes, dispersal occurs primarily during a planktonic larval stage. There are two major reproductive and parental investment syndromes among reef fishes, and the differences between them have implications for dispersal: (1) benthic guarding fishes lay negatively buoyant eggs, typically guarded by the male parent, and from these eggs hatch large, strongly swimming larvae; in contrast, (2) pelagic spawning f...

Delirium is a strong risk factor for dementia in the oldest-old: a population-based cohort study.
(2012)
CUNNINGHAM, COLM
Abstract:
Recent studies suggest that delirium is associated with risk of dementia and also acceleration of decline in existing dementia. However, previous studies may have been confounded by incomplete ascertainment of cognitive status at baseline. Herein, we used a true population sample to determine if delirium is a risk factor for incident dementia and cognitive decline. We also examined the effect of delirium at the pathological level by determining associations between dementia and neuropathological markers of dementia in patients with and without a history of delirium. The Vantaa 85+ study examined 553 individuals (92% of those eligible) aged ?85 years at baseline, 3, 5, 8 and 10 years. Brain autopsy was performed in 52%. Fixed and random-effects regression models were used to assess associations between (i) delirium and incident dementia and (ii) decline in Mini-Mental State Examination scores in the whole group. The relationship between dementia and common neuropathological markers (...

The prevalence of suicidal ideation in the general population: results from the Outcome of Depression International Network (ODIN) study
(2014)
Casey, Patricia R.; Dunn, Graham; Kelly, Brendan D.; et al.
Abstract:
Background: Suicidal ideation is believed to be part of a constellation of suicidal behaviours that culminates in suicide. There is little information on the cross-national prevalence of all suicidal ideation or of serious suicidal ideation in spite of its likely public health importance. Methods: A two-stage screening approach of over 12,000 adults from the general population were evaluated by face to face interview to identify those meeting ICD-10 criteria for depressive disorders at eight sites in five European countries. This study is a cross-sectional analysis of item 9 (suicidal ideation) of the Beck depression inventory from the total screened sample. Results: The standardised period prevalence for all suicidal ideation varied from 1.1 to 19.8% while for serious suicidal ideation there was much less variation. Examining the inter-relationships between all suicide ideation, serious suicide ideation, depressive disorders and suicide failed to support a seamless transition from ...

Assessment of dietary background exposure of the Irish adult population to dioxins and PCBs particularly taking into account additional exposure due to the 2008 Irish dioxin food contamination incident
(2014)
Tlustos, Christina L. T.
Abstract:
Irish monitoring data on PCDD/Fs, DL-PCBs and Marker PCBs were collated and combined with Irish Adult Food Consumption Data, to estimate dietary background exposure of Irish adults to dioxins and PCBs. Furthermore, all available information on the 2008 Irish pork dioxin food contamination incident was collated and analysed with a view to evaluate any potential impact the incident may have had on general dioxin and PCB background exposure levels estimated for the adult population in Ireland. The average upperbound daily intake of Irish adults to dioxins Total WHO TEQ (2005) (PCDD/Fs & DLPCBs) from environmental background contamination, was estimated at 0.3 pg/kg bw/d and at the 95th percentile at 1 pg/kg bw/d. The average upperbound daily intake of Irish adults to the sum of 6 Marker PCBs from environmental background contamination ubiquitous in the environment was estimated at 1.6 ng/kg bw/d and at the 95th percentile at 6.8 ng/kg bw/d. Dietary background exposure estimates for...

Abstract:
Background: In the general population, the epidemiological relationships between delirium and adverse outcomes are not well defined. The aims of this study were to: (1) construct an algorithm for the diagnosis of delirium using the Geriatric Mental State (GMS) examination; (2) test the criterion validity of this algorithm against mortality and dementia risk; (3) report the age-specific prevalence of delirium as determined by this algorithm. Methods: Participant and informant data in a randomly weighted subsample of the Cognitive Function and Ageing Study were taken from a standardized assessment battery. The algorithmic definition of delirium was based on the DSM-IV classification. Outcomes were: proportional hazard ratios for death; odds ratios of dementia at 2-year follow-up. Results: Data from 2197 persons (representative of 13,004) were used, median age 77 years, 64% women. Study-defined delirium was associated with a new dementia diagnosis at two years (OR 8.82, 95% CI 2.76 to ...

Abstract:
Aims and objectives: This paper aims to describe reported difficulty and frequency in carrying out oral hygiene practices among an ageing population with intellectual disabilities in Ireland; Methods: This cross-sectional survey was based on a Nationally representative sample of people with intellectual disability over 40 years of age, randomly selected from a National Intellectual Disability Database as part of the first wave of the Intellectual Disability Supplement to The Irish Longitudinal Study on Ageing (IDS-TILDA). Level of reported difficulty was used to categorise the sample into three groups: those reporting no difficulty, those reporting some difficulty and those who cannot care for their teeth / dentures at all. Summary statistics and bivariate correlations are reported based on this categorization. The sample was further categorized into those with and without reported difficulty cleaning their teeth / caring for their dentures, for purposes of logistic regression. Ind...

Abstract:
Summary Objective Use of food supplements in the developed world is increasing in all age groups. With older age, the prevalence of multimorbidity and pharmacotherapy increases. Aim was to explore the prevalence of food supplement use among population aged ? 50 years in Ireland and to identify factors associated with food supplement use. Design and setting Cross-sectional analysis of food supplements and medicines reported during in-home interviews by 8081 community dwelling participants aged ? 50 years included in the first wave of the Irish Longitudinal Study on Ageing. Results The prevalence of regular use of food supplements was 16.6% (95% confidence interval (CI) 15.5?17.7%) and 14.1% (95% CI 13.2?15.1%) reported taking food supplements and medicines concomitantly. Associate factors for supplement use were being female (odds ratio (OR) 2.65; 95% CI 2.30?3.06), retired (OR 1.49; 95% CI 1.23?1.79), a non-smoker (OR 1.47; 1.21?1.77), having third level or higher education (OR 1...

Abstract:
Cows are the main economic production units of Ireland's cattle industry. Therefore, demographic information, including overall numbers and survival rates, are relevant to the Irish agricultural industry. However, few data are available on the demographics of cows within a national population, either in Ireland or elsewhere, despite the recent development of comprehensive national cattle databases in many EU Member States. This study has sought: to determine the rate of cow culling from the national herd; to determine the rate of culling by type (dairy, beef), age, method of exit, date of exit and interval between last calving and exit; to calculate the national cow on-farm mortality rate; and to compare the Irish rates with published data from other countries. This work was conducted using data recorded in the national Cattle Movement Monitoring System (CMMS). Culling refers to the exit of cows from the national herd, as a result of death but regardless of reason, and cow-cull...

Frailty And Its Association With Rehabilitation Outcomes: An Irish Prospective Cohort Study Of A Post-Acute Older Population
(2014)
Nolan, Mary T
Abstract:
<p>The projected increase in the older population over the coming decades will place a greater demand on health-care services. Frailty is highly prevalent in the hospitalised older adult. There is a lack of research examining the impact of frailty on determinants of physical function, quality-of-life and falls self-efficacy.</p> <p><strong>Aims and Objectives:</strong></p> <p><strong></strong>The primary aim of this research was to evaluate the changes in physical function, quality-oflife and falls self-efficacy in frail older adults undergoing inpatient rehabilitation. A secondary aim was to examine the association between frailty and rehabilitation outcomes of physical function, quality-of-life, self-efficacy, time spent in therapy, length of stay and discharge destination.</p> <p><strong>Methods</strong>:</p> <p>A prospective cohort study design was employed using a sample of convenience. Abstract:
<p>The original article is available at <a href="http://emj.bmj.com/">http://emj.bmj.com/</a></p>
<p>BACKGROUND: Mass media campaigns for stroke awareness encourage the public to recognise stroke symptoms and respond to stroke in a timely manner. However, there is little evidence to suggest that media messages can influence behaviour after stroke onset. The F.A.S.T. (Face Arm Speech Time) test is a common stroke recognition tool used in public education campaigns.</p> <p>OBJECTIVE: To assess the impact of the F.A.S.T. campaign on health service use in Ireland, which has had no previous exposure to a F.A.S.T. media campaign.</p> <p>METHODS: An interrupted time series design was used to detect behaviour change after the introduction of the first Irish F.A.S.T. campaign in presentations of patients with suspected stroke to two emergency departments (EDs), serving a population of about 580 000.</p> <p>RESULT...

<p>OBJECTIVES: This paper examines the relationships between indicators of positive and negative dimensions of mental health, social well-being and physical health. METHODS: The paper reports on data collected in the third National Survey of Lifestyle, Attitudes and Nutrition (SLÁN 2007), a cross-sectional survey conducted with a representative sample of 10,364 Irish adults. The survey included measures of positive mental health and non-specific psychological distress from the SF-36 questionnaire, together with measures of social well-being, subjective health, and selected health behaviours. RESULTS: Positive mental health is predicted by lower levels of loneliness and higher levels of social support. Better self-rated health, positive health behaviours and lower GP consultation rates are associated with higher levels of positiv...

<p>UNLABELLED: ABSTRACT:</p> <p>BACKGROUND: Several studies have shown the influence of the perceptions of aging on the cognitive functioning and the mental and physical health of older people. These relationships have not to date been studied in France where validated instruments are lacking. The primary objective of this study was to validate a French-language version of the Aging Perceptions Questionnaire (APQ) in the French general population aged 65 and over. The secondary objective was to study the stability of the dimensions of this instrument among participants aged 55 to 64.</p> <p>METHODS: The study was proposed to the cohort of the Observatoire Régional du Vieillissement (OPREVI) (observatory of aging), located in a small town in Poitou-Charentes (western France). An anonymous questionnaire includin...

<p>BACKGROUND: Sexual violence is a worldwide problem affecting children and adults. Knowledge of trends in prevalence is essential to inform the design and evaluation of preventive and intervention programmes. We aimed to assess the prevalence of lifetime sexual violence for both sexes and to document the prevalence of adult and child abuse by birth year in the general population.</p> <p>METHODS: National cluster-randomized telephone interview study of 3120 adults in Ireland was done.</p> <p>RESULTS: Child sexual abuse involving physical contact was reported by 20% of women and 16% of men. In adulthood, figures were 20% and 10% for women and men, respectively. Prevalence of any form of sexual violence across the lifespan was 42% (women) and 38% (men). Analysis by year of birth indicated a curvi...

<p>The information provided here gives a sense of the value of comparing population studies between the Republic and Northern Ireland, albeit incomplete comparisons in this case since the studies were conducted independently. We share enough that is both common and unique in our attitudes, health profiles and health systems to enable fruitful comparisons for both sides. Future opportunities for comparison should be more explicitly incorporated into the planning stages of such studies. We hope that this report will provide a catalyst for joint survey planning, such that information forthcoming can inform and benefit policy and practice in th...

Abstract:

<p>ABSTRACT: BACKGROUND: The negative effects of stigma on persons living with HIV (PLHIV) have been documented in many settings and it is thought that stigma against PLHIV leads to more difficulties for those who need to access HIV testing, treatment and care, as well as to limited community uptake of HIV prevention and testing messages. In order to understand and prevent stigma towards PLHIV, it is important to be able to measure stigma within communities and to understand which factors are associated with higher stigma. METHODS: To analyze patterns of community stigma and determinants to stigma toward PLHIV, we performed an exploratory population-based survey with 1874 randomly sampled adults within a demographic surveillance site (DSS) in rural Vietnam. Participants were interviewed regarding knowledge of HIV and attitudes toward...

Psychotic-like experiences in the general population: characterizing a high-risk group for psychosis.

Kelleher, Ian; Cannon, Mary
Abstract:
<p>This article is also available from Cambridge Journals at <a href="http://journals.cambridge.org/">http://journals.cambridge.org/</a></p>
<p>Recent research shows that psychotic symptoms, or psychotic-like experiences (PLEs), are reported not only by psychosis patients but also by healthy members of the general population. Healthy individuals who report these symptoms are considered to represent a non-clinical psychosis phenotype, and have been demonstrated to be at increased risk of schizophrenia-spectrum disorder. Converging research now shows that this non-clinical psychosis phenotype is familial, heritable and covaries with familial schizophrenia-spectrum disorder. A review of the research also shows that the non-clinical phenotype is associated extensively with schizophrenia-related risk factors, including social, environmental, substance use, obstetric, developmental, anatomical, motor, cognitive, linguistic, intellectual and psyc...

Prevalence of Psychiatric Morbidity and Behavioural Problems in 22q11.2DS: An Irish Population Study
(2010)
Prasad, Sarah E
Abstract:
<p>Introduction:</p> <p>This population study examines the prevalence of psychiatric morbidity, behavioural difficulties, autistic and schizotypal features in a sample of individuals with 22q11.2DS and in their sibling controls.</p> <p>Methods:</p> <p>Forty-five individuals with 22q11.2DS and their 27 siblings were recruited and studied. Psychiatric morbidity was assessed by using the parent Diagnostic Interview Schedule for Children (DISC-P), Kiddie SADS-Present and Lifetime Version (K-SADPL) (psychotic supplement), Comprehensive Assessment of the At Risk Mental State (CAARMS), Schedule for Clinical Assessment in Neuropsychiatry (SCAN) and the parent Conners' rating scale. Behavioural difficulties were measured by the Strengths and Difficulties Questionnaire (SDQ) and the Child Behaviour Checklist (CBCL). The Social Responsiveness Scale (SRS) and the Social Communication Questionnaire (SCQ) were used to measure symptoms of autism. The ...

Resitin and adiponectin in the Bahraini population : plasma levels, gene polymorphisms and their association with type 2 diabetes and related metabolic parameters.
(2012)
Al Hannan, Fatima
Abstract:
<p><strong>Low concentrations of adiponectin, the protein product of the adiponectin </strong><strong>gene (ADIPOQ), and high concentrations of resistin have been reported </strong><strong>to be associated with obesity and insulin resistance. Several adiponectin </strong><strong>gene polymorphisms have been described, and their association with </strong><strong>obesity, type 2 diabetes mellitus (T2DM), and metabolic syndrome, in </strong><strong>different populations and sample types, is controversial. The purpose of </strong><strong>the present study was to investigate the association of the two most well-known single nucleotide polymorphisms (SNPs) of ADIPOQ (+45T>G </strong><strong>and +276G>T) with serum adiponectin concentrations, metabolic </strong><strong>parameters associated with diabetes, and risk of T2DM in the Bahraini </strong><strong>population....

An Investigation of Cannabis Use and Childhood Trauma in Relation to Psychotic Symptoms and Their Outcomes: a Population-Based Follow-up Study of Irish Adolescents
(2013)
Harley, Michelle
Abstract:
<p><strong>Background:</strong> Adolescent cannabis use has been shown to increase risk of later psychosis and childhood trauma is associated with both substance misuse and risk for psychosis. Psychotic symptoms in adolescents have been linked with later common mental disorders as well as psychotic outcomes, however personality disorders have not been investigated. There is limited information on rates of psychiatric disorder among adolescents and adults with psychotic symptoms in community samples, and no information on rates of personality disorders in this group. This study aimed to investigate prevalence (in adolescence and young adulthood), incidence and persistence rates of psychotic symptoms in a young Irish population, and whether early versus later onset of cannabis use and childhood trauma increase risk of psychotic symptoms, separately and/or by an interaction effect. Adult psychiatric outcomes and comorbidities of psychotic symptoms were also investigat...
