An evaluation of the Zippy's Friends emotional wellbeing programme for primary schools in Ireland.
(2010)
Clarke, Aleisha M.; Barry, Margaret M.
Abstract:
This report presents the main findings on the evaluation of the Zippy's Friends emotional wellbeing programme in Irish primary schools. The Zippy's Friends programme is designed to promote the emotional wellbeing of children aged five to eight years of age by increasing their repertoire of coping skills and by stimulating varied and flexible ways of coping with problems of day-to-day life. The programme is based around a set of six illustrated stories about a group of children, their families, friends and an imaginary stick insect called Zippy. Comprised of six modules, the programme addresses the following themes: feelings, communication, making and breaking relationships, conflict resolution, dealing with change and loss, and general coping skills. Structured into sessions, the programme is supported by a teacher's manual and an attractive set of teaching materials, which are designed to actively engage the children in a range of child-centered activities. Summary report on the inter-country adoption preparation "train the trainers" courses
(2004)
O'Brien, Valerie; Dempsey, Peggy
Abstract:
The provision of preparation courses for intending adoptive parents was integral to the Standardised Framework proposed and accepted for Inter-Country Adoption Assessment in Ireland. In November 2002 funding was made available by the Department of Health and Children to develop and provide ‘Train the Trainers’ for running these preparation courses. The aim was to increase/ develop a pool of trainers to run the recommended courses for prospective adoptive parents. The main purposes of this report are: To give overview of the state of development of the ‘train the trainers’ courses provided; To identify implementation issues/ learning points derived from the initial stages of the training programme and to identify steps needed to mainstream this development.

The combination of agile and lean in software development: an experience report analysis
(2011)
Wang, Xiaofeng
Abstract:
There has been a noticeable focus shift from agilemethods such as eXtreme Programming (XP) and Scrum tolean software development in the last several years, which is indicated as “from agile to lean”. However, the reality may not be as simple or linear as the term implies. To provide a better understanding of the combined use of agile and lean approaches in software development, a set of experience reports were analysed. These reports were published in the past conferences dedicated to agile software development and report experiences of using both agile and lean. The results of the analysis show that agile and lean can be combined in different manners for different purposes in software development. Lean is often applied as guiding principles for agile development. When combined at practice level, flowbased lean processes tend to substitute time-boxed agile processes.

Alexopoulos, Angelos; Bruton, Neil; Gorman, Louise; Linehan, Kieran; Lynn, Theo; O'Leary, Michael
Abstract:
Gifted Techspectations is the first of a series of reports based on research by the DCU Leadership, Innovation and Knowledge Research Centre (LInK) based in DCU Business School. With its roots in an Irish business school, it is no surprise that LInK’s mission is to strengthen the competitiveness, productivity, innovation and entrepreneurial capacity of the Irish economy. Ireland’s next generation transformation will be enabled by information and communication technologies (ICT) and digital participation by members of Irish society. As a university research centre we have an important role to play in supporting education, industry and government to accelerate this transformation. With support from DCU Business School, Enterprise Ireland’s Innovation Voucher Programme, DCU’s Learning Innovation Unit, Cambridge University Press and the Nominet Foundation amongst others, LInK has undertaken a wide variety of activities to accelerate digital participation. These include applied research...

Abstract:
Accepted Version
http://fmd.ie/symposia/symposium-2010.html
The discovery of a Viking sword and spearhead was reported to the National Museum of Ireland in 2007. The artefacts were found accidentally when a trench for electrical cables was being dug at the War Memorial Park in Islandbridge, Dublin. A rescue excavation was undertaken in order to recover any other artefacts that may have been damaged during the ground works. A disturbed inhumation and three copper-alloy objects were found in the course of the excavation. This report is a preliminary summary of the findings of the excavation. It is suggested that the finds together represent the grave of a Scandinavian warrior. The results of isotope analysis on teeth found during the excavation are also presented.

Sustainable Water Supply in Ireland
(2012)
McCarton, Liam; O'Hogain, Sean
Abstract:
<p>Sustainable water technology is concerned with the complete range of technologies, techniques, products and processes that will enable humankind to reduce the impact of water production and water consumption on the environment and to establish a more sustainable mode of development. The concept of sustainable development has gained wide usage over the past 15 years in an attempt to balance development needs and environmental protection. The Brundtland Report of the World Commission on Environment and Development, Our Common Future (1987) identified sustainable development as a global objective, which involved economic, social and environmental values. It defined sustainable development as ‘ development that meets the needs of the present without compromising the ability of future generations to meet their own needs’. Sustainable development of water resources involves considerations of population growth, urbanisation, industrialisation, land use practices, climate change an...

New Ways of Mapping Social Inclusion in Dublin City
(2009)
Gleeson, Justin; Kitchin, Rob; Bartley, Brendan; Treacy, Caroline
Abstract:
The Dublin City Area Based Partnerships are pleased to present this report “New Ways of Mapping Social Inclusion in Dublin City”. This initiative is a collaboration between the Area Based Partnerships, Dublin City Development Board (DCDB) and the National Institute for Regional and Spatial Analysis (NIRSA). The commissioning of this report stemmed from a need to source accurate and timely data to aid the targeted delivery of supports to help those most at need within our communities. The research has created a localised evidence base which will ensure a more effective deployment of our limited resources. This will have the potential to achieve better outcomes within our communities. The report demonstrates that with the agreement of data holders we can significantly enhance our knowledge base and decision making. We expect that on reading this report, government bodies, and other relevant stakeholders will see the benefits in sharing information at a local level to inform policy mak...

Irish Social Services: a Symposium - Addendum to the Symposium
(1943)
Mortished, R. J. P.
Abstract:
So much excitement has been worked up over the Beveridge Report in Great Britain that we here may tend to exaggerate its importance. In the first place, even if the Report were applied in full (which is by no means the intention of the present British Government), it would not bring about the social revolution. Its proposals are of two kinds: (1) Simplification and unification of existing social insurance schemes —an administrative "streamlining"; and (2) an extension of the scope of social insurance, a removal of some but not all anomalies, and an adjustment of contributions and benefits. The plan entails an appreciable redistribution of income; but it does not entail any change in the ownership of property or in the organisation of the national economy. In the second place, the Report was written in and for another country; its proposals are obviously designed to meet the needs of a highly industrialised and urbanised country the great majority of the people of which dep...

Abstract:
This report presents the first descriptive analysis of the findings from the first wave of data collection with the 8,570 nine-year-old children, their families and teachers who have participated in Growing Up in Ireland – the National Longitudinal Study of Children. The data were collected between September 2007 and June 2008. This report is one of a series describing the background literature, the design, instrumentation and the findings of the Growing Up in Ireland project. Growing Up in Ireland tracks the development of two cohorts of children, one aged nine years and one aged nine months. This report addresses the first objective of Growing Up in Ireland: ‘to describe the lives of children in Ireland’. It will provide a comprehensive picture of how the nine-year-old children are faring across the main domains of their development and their daily life experience. The findings will be presented for all children and will also be presented by the sex of the child. Where interesting...

Parents of children with developmental disabilities report poorer physical health
(2010)
Gallagher, Stephen; Whiteley, J.; Shandley, L.; Dixon, K.; Lee, H.
Abstract:
Background: Older caregivers of patients with mental heath difficulties report poor physical health. This study examined whether younger parental caregivers of children with developmental disabilities would also report poor physical health. Methods: A cross-sectional between subjects design was used. Thirty-eight parents of children with developmental disabilities and 34 parents of typically developing children completed standard measures of perceived stress, social support, mastery and child problem behaviours. Results: ANOVA revealed that caregivers reported more physical health problems than controls (Mean = 52.5 + 12.24 vs 43.1 + 13.35; F (1, 70) = 9.62, p < .05). ANCOVA indicated that this appeared to be partly mediated by mastery and child problem behaviours. Conclusion: The negative impact of caregiving on self-report physical health is also evident in younger parents of children with developmental disabilities. The coping style of parents and the behavioural charact...

Economic Impact Assessment: The Creative Sector in the Western Region

Abstract:
The 'Creative West' report by the Western Development Commission in 2009 was the first attempt to map out the Creative Sector in an Irish context. This economic impact assessment follows on from that report by assessing the growth potential for the Creative Sector in the Ireland's Western Region resulting from recommendations made by Creative West and has attempted to measure the outcome of these actions through consultation with the sector. This economic impact assessment demonstrates the potential impact of the growth of the sector alone. It also attempts to gauge the spillover impacts of the sector in the region and beyond. Ultimately, this is an extremely difficult exercise such is the far reaching and deeply ingrained nature of creativity in social, economic and cultural senses. In line with the Creative West report, we recognize that the creative sector stimulates innovation in other sectors, plays a key social role and can stimulate both rural and regional deve...

Abstract:
The four National University of Ireland Universities have offered a diploma in rural development to adults experienced in, or concerned about rural development since 1996. The diploma initiative arose from a government report on the needs for education and training for the development of rural areas. The universities acted upon the Creedon Report (1993) and offered a 60 credit two-year distance learning diploma in 11 separate themed modules. Over 400 people have completed this diploma since 1996 and have gone on to impact on their local communities, develop careers, develop enterprises, and impact on rural development policy. By 2004 the universities were able to launch a follow on degree. This degree completed by distance learning in two years, (following the diploma), has graduated almost 80 people in the last four years. This paper draws on research completed by two graduates of this degree. These graduates, with support from a summer research programme within NUI Maynooth, soug...

Abstract:
This is the report on a background study for the National Spatial Strategy (NSS) regarding the Irish Rural Structure. The main objective of the study was to "develop, using demographic, economic and geographical data, a typology of rural areas in Ireland and their main characteristics. The typology should be developed at a geographical scale that enables practical regional and subregional comparisons to be made". The study also examined: trends within these areas and the outlook for them; the relationship between urban and rural areas; and the role of infrastructure in rural area performance. This Summary presents selected principal findings only. More detailed results are contained in the Main Report. The overall study approach has been one of a high level of quantification, drawing mainly on the Census of Population 1996. This focus reflects a desire to contribute analytically to much discussed but seldom systematically assessed issues of rural development and rural perf...

Pensions: What Women Want. A model of pensions that guarantees independence
(2008)
Murphy, Mary
Abstract:
The Government published the Green Paper on Pensions in October 2007 and called for a widespread debate on the future development of old age pensions informed both by the Green Paper and the suite of reports published by the Pensions Board. In this report, offered as a contribution to the emerging debate on pensions, the National Women’s Council of Ireland (NWCI) sets out its views on the policy issues involved. It does this against a background in which women’s needs and perspectives in relation to pensions have not yet been specifically debated. In short, the report aims to engender the Irish pension debate. The recommendations made in this paper are not only beneficial for women but can also form part of an antipoverty strategy, in that they are also beneficial for the many low income groups who experience cumulative labour market disadvantage and a subsequent high risk of poverty in old age.
