Differentiating between Vocations and Careers
(2011)
Cullen, John G.
Abstract:
Recently, there have been a significant number of calls for constructionist forms of career counseling and development which prioritize occupational decision-making that honor the values of the client or participant, rather than those which solely stress approaches which meet the needs of the labor market (Savickas et al., 2009). Encouraging participants to consider their occupational identity as a ‘vocation’ as opposed to a ‘job’ or a ‘career’ is a small, but significant nuance that changes how individuals develop career plans and learn. Due to the ongoing prevalence of the ‘career paradigm’, however, it can often prove difficult for university students to differentiate between jobs, occupations, careers, professions and vocations. This paper aims to clarify how vocational thinking differs from other forms of occupational idealization in a way which is informed by the authors experience in introducing the concept of vocational thinking to undergraduate and postgraduate business stu...

Reporting empirical research in open source software: the state of practice.
(2012)
Stol, Klaas-Jan; Ali Babar, Muhammad
Abstract:
Background: The number of reported empirical studies of Open Source Software (OSS) has continuously been increasing. However, there has been no effort to systematically review the state of the practice of reporting empirical studies of OSS with respect to the recommended standards of performing and reporting empirical studies in software engineering. It is important to understand, how to report empirical studies of OSS in order to make them useful for practitioners and researchers. Research aim: The aim of our research is to gain insights in the state of the practice of reporting empirical studies of OSS in order to identify the gaps to be filled for improving the quality of evidence being provided for OSS. Method: To that end, we decided to systematically review the empirical studies of OSS. A total of 63 papers reporting empirical studies were selected from the four editions of the Proceedings of the International Conference on Open Source Systems. The data were extracted and synt...

Young People and Public Libraries in Ireland: Issues and Opportunities
(2010)
GILLIGAN, ROBERT HENRY; MC GRATH, BRID
Abstract:
The responses to this survey on young people’s use of and views on public libraries in Ireland demonstrate that public libraries provide a wide range of services to young adults, but these are unevenly distributed throughout the country and, indeed, within library authorities. Innovative and attractive services have been provided and more are planned. Many services, however, are limited by lack of space, paucity of training for library staff, the absence of any dedicated young adults’ librarians and a low level of knowledge of, and interest in, libraries on the part of teenagers, as well as competition with their other activities.

VERITAS Observations of the Unusual Extragalactic Transient Swift J164449.3+573451
(2011)
Gillanders, Gary
Abstract:
We report on very-high-energy ($>$100 GeV) gamma-ray observations of Swift J164449.3+573451, an unusual transient object first detected by the {\it Swift} Observatory and later detected by multiple radio, optical and X-ray observatories. A total exposure of 28 hours was obtained on Swift J164449.3+573451 with VERITAS during 2011 March 28 -- April 15. We do not detect the source and place a differential upper limit on the emission at 500 GeV during these observations of $1.4 \times 10^{-12}$ erg cm$^{-2}$ s$^{-1}$ (99% confidence level). We also present time-resolved upper limits and use a flux limit averaged over the X-ray flaring period to constrain various emission scenarios that can accommodate both the radio-through-X-ray emission detected from the source and the lack of detection by VERITAS.

Abstract:
We report on observations of the sky region around the unidentified TeV gamma-ray source TeV J2032+4130 carried out with the Whipple Observatory 10 m atmospheric Cherenkov telescope for a total of 65.5 hrs between 2003 and 2005. The standard two-dimensional analysis developed by the Whipple collaboration for a stand-alone telescope reveals an excess in the field of view at a pre-trials significance level of 6.1 standard deviations. The measured position of this excess is alpha(2000) =20 h 32 m 27 s, delta(2000) = 41 deg 39 min 17 s. The estimated integral flux for this gamma-ray source is about 8% of the Crab-Nebula flux. The data are consistent with a point-like source. Here we present a detailed description of the standard two-dimensional analysis technique used for the analysis of data taken with the Whipple Observatory 10 m telescope and the results for the TeV J2032+4130 campaign. We include a short discussion of the physical mechanisms that may be responsible for the observed ...

TeV Gamma-Ray Observations of the Perseus and Abell 2029 Galaxy Clusters
(2006)
Lang, Mark; Gillanders, Gary
Abstract:
Galaxy clusters might be sources of TeV gamma rays emitted by high-energy protons and electrons accelerated by large scale structure formation shocks, galactic winds, or active galactic nuclei. Furthermore, gamma rays may be produced in dark matter particle annihilation processes at the cluster cores. We report on observations of the galaxy clusters Perseus and Abell 2029 using the 10 m Whipple Cherenkov telescope during the 2003-2004 and 2004-2005 observing seasons. We apply a two-dimensional analysis technique to scrutinize the clusters for TeV emission. In this paper we first determine flux upper limits on TeV gamma-ray emission from point sources within the clusters. Second, we derive upper limits on the extended cluster emission. We subsequently compare the flux upper limits with EGRET upper limits at 100 MeV and theoretical models. Assuming that the gamma-ray surface brightness profile mimics that of the thermal X-ray emission and that the spectrum of cluster cosmic rays exten...

Abstract:
A decade after the discovery of TeV gamma-rays from the blazar Mrk 421 (Punch et al. 1992), the list of TeV blazars has increased to five BL Lac objects: Mrk 421 (Punch et al. 1992; Petry et al. 1996; Piron et al. 2001), Mrk 501 (Quinn et al. 1996; Aharonian et al. 1999; Djannati-Atai et al. 1999), 1ES2344+514 (Catanese et al. 1998), H1426+428 (Horan et al. 2000, 2002; Aharonian et al. 2002; Djannati-Atai et al. 2002) and 1ES1959+650 (Nishiyama et al. 1999; Konopelko et al. 2002; Holder et al. 2002). In this paper we report results from recent observations of Mrk 421, H1426+428 and 1ES1959+650 using the Whipple Observatory 10 m telescope.

Detection of Pulsed Gamma Rays Above 100 GeV from the Crab Pulsar
(2011)
Lang, Mark; Gillanders, Gary
Abstract:
We report the detection of pulsed gamma rays from the Crab pulsar at energies above 100 Gigaelectronvolts (GeV) with the VERITAS array of atmospheric Cherenkov telescopes. The detection cannot be explained on the basis of current pulsar models. The photon spectrum of pulsed emission between 100 Megaelectronvolts (MeV) and 400 GeV is described by a broken power law that is statistically preferred over a power law with an exponential cutoff. It is unlikely that the observation can be explained by invoking curvature radiation as the origin of the observed gamma rays above 100 GeV. Our findings require that these gamma rays be produced more than 10 stellar radii from the neutron star.

TeV and Multi-wavelength Observations of Mrk 421 in 2006-2008

Abstract:
We report on TeV gamma-ray observations of the blazar Mrk 421 (redshift of 0.031) with the VERITAS observatory and the Whipple 10m Cherenkov telescope. The excellent sensitivity of VERITAS allowed us to sample the TeV gamma-ray fluxes and energy spectra with unprecedented accuracy where Mrk 421 was detected in each of the pointings. A total of 47.3 hrs of VERITAS and 96 hrs of Whipple 10m data were acquired between January 2006 and June 2008. We present the results of a study of the TeV gamma-ray energy spectra as a function of time, and for different flux levels. On May 2nd and 3rd, 2008, bright TeV gamma-ray flares were detected with fluxes reaching the level of 10 Crab. The TeV gamma-ray data were complemented with radio, optical, and X-ray observations, with flux variability found in all bands except for the radio waveband. The combination of the RXTE and Swift X-ray data reveal spectral hardening with increasing flux levels, often correlated with an increase of the source activ...

Important issues and key activities in product derivation:experiences from two independent research projects
(2012)
O'Leary, Padraig; Rabiser, Rick; Richardson, Ita
Abstract:
When compared to the vast amount of research on domain engineering and building product lines, relatively little work has been dedicated to the derivation of individual products from product lines. Existing approaches to product derivation have been developed in isolation with different aims and purposes. The definition of a generic product derivation approach applicable to every domain may not be possible. However, comparing existing approaches allows the identification of both important issues to be addressed and key activities to be supported. In this experience paper we report on how we compared two product derivation approaches developed in two different, independent research projects. Based on the comparison and our experiences, we identify key activities that any approach to product derivation should consider. Additionally, we point out areas of uncertainty and identify remaining challenges within product derivation.

Apoptosis-associated release of Smac/DIABLO from mitochondria requires active caspases and is blocked by Bcl-2
(2001)
CREAGH, EMMA; MARTIN, SEAMUS JOSEPH
Abstract:
Smac/DIABLO is a mitochondrial protein that potentiates some forms of apoptosis, possibly by neutralizing one or more members of the IAP family of apoptosis inhibitory proteins. Smac has been shown to exit mitochondria and enter the cytosol during apoptosis triggered by UV- or γ-irradiation. Here, we report that Smac/DIABLO export from mitochondria into the cytosol is provoked by cytotoxic drugs and DNA damage, as well as by ligation of the CD95 death receptor. Mitochondrial efflux of Smac/DIABLO, in response to a variety of pro-apoptotic agents, was profoundly inhibited in Bcl-2-overexpressing cells. Thus, in addition to modulating apoptosis-associated mitochondrial cytochrome c release, Bcl-2 also regulates Smac release, suggesting that both molecules may escape via the same route. However, whereas cell stress-associated mitochondrial cytochrome c release was largely caspase independent, release of Smac/DIABLO in response to the same stimuli was blocked by a broad-spectrum caspase...

CARDINAL, a novel caspase recruitment domain protein, is an inhibitor of multiple NF-kappa B activation pathways.
(2001)
CREAGH, EMMA; MARTIN, SEAMUS JOSEPH
Abstract:
Proteins possessing the caspase recruitment domain (CARD) motif have been implicated in pathways leading to activation of caspases or NF-kappaB in the context of apoptosis or inflammation, respectively. Here we report the identification of a novel protein, CARDINAL, that contains a CARD motif and also exhibits a high degree of homology to the C terminus of DEFCAP/NAC, a recently described member of the Apaf-1/Nod-1 family. In contrast with the majority of CARD proteins described to date, CARDINAL failed to promote apoptosis or NF-kappaB activation. Rather, CARDINAL potently suppressed NF-kappaB activation associated with overexpression of TRAIL-R1, TRAIL-R2, RIP, RICK, Bcl10, and TRADD, or through ligand-induced stimulation of the interleukin-1 or tumor necrosis factor receptors. Co-immunoprecipitation experiments revealed that CARDINAL interacts with the regulatory subunit of the IkappaB kinase (IKK) complex, IKKgamma (NEMO), providing a molecular basis for CARDINAL function. Thus,...

Opening up the Agile Innovation Process
(2010)

Abstract:
The objective of this panel is to discuss how firms can operate both an open and agile innovation process. In an era of unprecedented changes, companies need to be open and agile in order to adapt rapidly and maximize their innovation processes. Proponents of agile methods claim that one of the main distinctions between agile methods and their traditional bureaucratic counterparts is their drive toward creativity and innovation. However, agile methods are rarely adopted in their textbook, “vanilla” format, and are usually adopted in part or are tailored or modified to suit the organization. While we are aware that this happens, there is still limited understanding of what is actually happening in practice. Using innovation adoption theory, this panel will discuss the issues and challenges surrounding the successful adoption of agile practices. In addition, this panel will report on the obstacles and benefits reported by over 20 industrial partners engaged in a pan-European research ...

National Integrity System Country Study Ireland
(2009)
BYRNE, ELAINE; DEVITT, JOHN
Abstract:
The purpose of the National Integrity Study on Ireland is to assess the National Integrity System, in theory (laws and institutions) and practice (how well they work). It provides a benchmark for measuring further developments and a basis for comparison among a range of countries. It studies signal areas requiring priority action and also form the basis from which stakeholders may assess existing anti-corruption initiatives. This study helps explain, for example, which institutions or sectors, otherwise known as ‘pillars’ have been more successful and why, whether they are mutually supportive and what factors support or inhibit their effectiveness. This creates a strong empirical basis that adds to our understanding of strong or weak performers.

Abstract:
We the Citizens set out with optimism, and indeed hope, to test the value to our democracy of including citizens more directly in decision-making. That hope has been truly vindicated. We now have unequivocal proof that citizens’ assemblies will work in this country, as they have in many others. We have shown that when you give people objective information and the opportunity to deliberate, not only do they make informed decisions, they also feel a greater connection to the democratic process.

Abstract:
Software product lines (SPL) advocates the development of applications by reusing shared software assets across a set of related products. Current approaches to the derivation of products from a product line focuses on handling the commonalities and variabilities of the shared software assets. These approaches have failed to consider the early phases of product derivation. In this paper we report on how we compared both industrial and academic approaches to the establishment of a product derivation project. Based on this research and our experiences, we have identified key activities and important issues that should be considered when establishing a product derivation project.

Abstract:
Science Foundation Ireland (06/IN/1969)
Published Version
We investigate electronic mitigation of linear and non-linear fibre impairments and compare various digital signal processing techniques, including electronic dispersion compensation (EDC), single-channel back-propagation (SC-BP) and back-propagation with multiple channel processing (MC-BP) in a nine-channel 112 Gb/s PM-mQAM (m=4,16) WDM system, for reaches up to 6,320 km. We show that, for a sufficiently high local dispersion, SC-BP is sufficient to provide a significant performance enhancement when compared to EDC, and is adequate to achieve BER below FEC threshold. For these conditions we report that a sampling rate of two samples per symbol is sufficient for practical SC-BP, without significant penalties.

Abstract:
This report presents the findings of a qualitative research project investigating the attitudes of adults and young people involved in youth work towards development and global justice issues, and explores the implications of these findings for youth work practice. Twelve focus groups (six each with young people and youth workers) were conducted in different parts of the country, concentrated in three different 'sites': Dublin (city), Mayo (county) and Waterford (city and county). In total 48 young people and 34 youth workers participated in the research.
