The unacceptable conditions which apply in Sligo General Hospital
and which at the end of 1982 seemed well on the way to resolution, unfortunately are still
with us. The Board was faced early in 1983 with a Government decision not
to proceed with the project. However, following committments given by the
hospital management and staff on ftlvsnue consequences, and rapid
examination of the project with a view to achieving a phased approach, the
planning process has been resumed, with a timetable to complete contract
documents by the end of 1984. This project has bn for years, and
has been our first hospital priority.
Within limited resources, improvements have continued in the
psychiatric services and In services for the aged, and are detailed in this
report. Being parochial, I must record particular pleasure at the
commencement of work on the replacement of the Nursing Home in
Ballymote, a unit which has long been condemned by the Fire Authorities.
