Developing inclusive research methodologies: testing the voice centred relational method of qualitative data analysis in a collaborative research project on early school leaving
(2004)
Millar, Michelle; Canavan, John; Byrne, Anne
Abstract:
Committed to developing collaborative research processes and practices, this study sought to establish research partnerships between academic researchers, activists working in a context of social exclusion and those experiencing social exclusion. Responding to ideological and methodological challenges to democratise research processes and practices, the paper discusses the process of establishing collaborative research partnerships while assessing a methodological adaptation of the Voice Centred Relational (VCR) method of data analysis. The VCR method was used to interpret data on different experiences of school with a particular focus on early school leaving among a group of teenagers in a rural area in the West of Ireland. The VCR method claims to clarify conventions for the interpretation of qualitative data. Arguably, this removes some of the technical barriers that inhibit the possibility for the researched to become active interpreters of the data that they present to research...

Abstract:
<p>The principal investigators (PI) of publicly funded research projects are the key actors charged with direct responsibility for directing the research, reporting to the funding agency, and completing the project. Since the beginning of the 1990s the requirements for academic research and the management of academic research have undergone important changes, with the principal investigator now operating in a more complex environment and moved onto centre stage of industrial policy. Despite this shift, we continue to have a poor understanding of the PI role at a micro level. Set in an Irish context, this research employs thirty in-depth interviews with PIs from a range of cross disciplines, involving both national and European research projects and funding agencies, all of which were collaborative in nature. Together with offering recommendations for policy makers in the area, the findings of this research provide unique insights into how PIs can be categorized w...

Equality studies, the academy and the role of research in emancipatory social change
(1999)
Lynch, Kathleen
Abstract:
If people are structurally excluded from democratic engagement with research practice, they are precluded from assessing its validity in an informed manner. They are effectively disenfranchised from controlling the generation and dissemination of knowledge about themselves and/or the institutions within which they live and work. This issue is especially acute for marginalised groups and communities who are the subjects of so much social scientific research. Such research is frequently undertaken without the involvement of the groups or communities in question. The ownership of data gives researchers and policymakers power over the groups which may add to their marginalisation; there are now people who can claim to know you better than you know yourself. Without democratic engagement therefore, there is a real danger that research knowledge can be used for manipulation and control rather than challenging the injustices experienced. This paper analyses the role of research in relation...

Centres of research excellence in economics in the Republic of Ireland
(2007)
Ruane, Frances; Tol, Richard S.J.
Abstract:
Using publication, citation and h-numbers from the Scopus and Web of Science databases, we find that research output and academic influence of economists in the Republic of Ireland are heavily skewed by researcher and by institution. A subset of the results is confirmed by similar analyses based on EconLit, Google Scholar and IDEAS/REPEC. The analysis shows that while one university dominates in terms of numbers of economists, the more productive and most cited Irish research economists are spread across a range of institutions that are heavily concentrated in the Greater Dublin Area.

Management research on multinational corporations: a methodological critique
(2007)
McDonnell, Anthony; Lavelle, Jonathan; Gunnigle, Patrick; Collings, David G.
Abstract:
In the context of burgeoning research on multinational corporations (MNCs), this paper addresses the issue of the representativeness of databases of MNCs in Ireland. It identifies some important deficiencies in existing databases much used by scholars in the field. Drawing on the international literature, it finds that this problem also characterises research on MNCs in many other countries. In the Irish context, we find that the extant empirical research has generally excluded two key categories of MNCs, namely, (a) foreign MNCs which are not grant-aided by the main industrial promotions agencies and (b) Irish-owned MNCs. The paper outlines our experience in identifying and addressing these deficiencies and describes the methods that might be employed in more precisely defining the MNC population in Ireland. More generally the paper reviews some of the issues and obstacles confronting scholars investigating the MNC sector in Ireland and abroad.

Practice-related research methods as part of scientific information systems research
(2009)
Halonen, Raija
Abstract:
This article discusses the importance of research methods in scientific information systems research. To limit the approach, the emphasis is laid on practice-driven research methods. While the nature of `research¿ is dependent on research approach, this article focuses on qualitative research. In addition, the focus is not on research methods but their role in scientific research. Prior literature also reveals that qualitative research and quantitative research are not exclusive; instead, often the approaches are complementary. This article introduces three examples how research methods were used and how they influenced the output.

How Do Doctoral Research Academics Perceive Their Research Activities to be of Benefit to Undergraduate Students
(2011)
McCauley, James
Abstract:
<p>The principal aim of my research is to investigate the perceptions of Doctoral research academics regarding the benefit of their research activities to undergraduate students. Through in-depth interviews, the research aims to establish the level of communication that Doctoral researchers initiate with their undergraduate students about their research activities as well as the extent to which they know if these students perceive these activities as positive or negative. The extent to which students proactively queried such academics about their research activities is also examined. Two main types of activities were identified as having a positive impact: topic specific ‘cutting-edge’ knowledge was perceived as being beneficial as well as the broad-based liberal learning ethos that such academics brought to their teaching. Doctoral researchers research methods skills were of benefit, especially to dissertation students. A caveat for both however, was that they should not be ...

Glorified administrators or eminent research leaders: the inhibiting factors that publicly funded principal investigators experience in leading collaborative research projects
(2011)
Cunningham, James
Abstract:
Publicly funded research continues to be an important and critical source of research funding for Higher Education Institutions, public research organisations and industry with many benefits accruing to the various stakeholders. Key actors in delivering publicly funded research projects are Principal Investigators (PIs). PIs are responsible for all aspects of publicly funded research projects and are awarded grants based on their scientific eminence, past achievements, the quality of the proposal and articulated outcomes relating to the public funding calls. Becoming a publicly funded PI is seen as significant developing in a scientists career. Despite their importance, PIs have not been the focus of empirical investigation and the research eminence play is a significant consideration in awarding grants by funding agencies. The combination of increased level of competition for publicly funded research and a more managerialist approach being adopted by Higher Education Institutions, ...

Action research: a learning tool that engages complexity
(2009)
Kenny, Michael; Hynes, Rachel
Abstract:
Innovative micro-teaching to enhance student teaching/learning is increasingly using the concept of Action Research. In action research the particular focus is on the subject of the research also being a learner from the research outcome. The Kemmis Model (Cyclical Model of Action Research) introduced the notion that ‘all teachers are learners’ and ‘all learners can be teachers’. Action research emphasises the notion of self observation and self reflection. However observation and self reflection are challenging methods that value the personal nature of learning. The authors undertook an action research experiment, as part of their own professional learning, by introducing micro teaching practicum presentations video recording to a postgraduate education class of 20 adult/community educators during a curriculum development module. In this exercise the learning group was subdivided into two parts: 1. The first group of students were recorded and a DVD was made available to each prese...

Social Networking Sites: Evaluating and Investigating Their Use in Academic Research
(2010)
Redmond, Fiona
Abstract:
<p>Researchers must collect and analyse new data that will enhance the body of knowledge. It is for this reason that data is of major importance to researchers. All aspects of a research project involve data, from navigating existing data, to understanding how data is used in the world and why it is important to learn to collect data and make predictions. Researchers need to consider the types of data that are possible and examine and weight each option so they can determine what sources of data will answer the research questions or hypotheses. Researchers, who require a large amount of participants to contribute to their data collection and assist in their research, are limited in the choice of current research methods including questionnaires, postal surveys and online surveys and also limited in the number of respondents they can obtain to participate in their research. This paper proposes a new research method through the use of Social Networking Sites (SNS’s). It aims ...

Contradictions in Irish Academic Research
(2005)
Jerrams, Stephen; Donovan, John
Abstract:
<p>The conditions that govern academic research vary greatly from country to country and research in the Republic of Ireland was and remains markedly different from that of its larger European neighbours and the United States. Despite the quality of its education system and the excellent reputation of its universities, until recently Ireland had relatively low levels of academic research. Pinnacles of excellence could be found in certain disciplines, but state funding was low and issues relating to industrial collaborations, international partnerships, commercialisation and the exploitation of Intellectual Property (IP) rarely arose. Even today the Irish Government’s spending on academic research, though only slightly less than the European average based on GNP, is dwarfed by the Research and Development (R & D) budgets of individual multinational companies. Nonetheless, rapid economic growth has led to a heightened awareness of the need for strategically planned research....

Abstract:
<p>The Dublin Institute of Technology is one of the largest multi-level higher education providers in Ireland, catering for over 22,000 students annually. Under the 1999 Qualifications (Education and Training) Act, DIT became an awarding body in its own right. Programme provision covers apprenticeships, short continuous professional development courses, taught undergraduate and postgraduate, research MPhil and PhDs. While the Institute’s traditional mission1 was focused on teaching and learning in the field of advanced technical vocational education and training (TVET), over the last decade the importance of developing a research informed culture has become prominent in the strategic policy development of the Institute. Within this new emerging research agenda substantial achievements have been made in specific fields such as; science, engineering, ICT, tourism & food. However the research potential of a large portion of staff who work in the apprenticeship and craft area ...

How do Doctoral Research Academics Perceive their Research Activities to be of Benefit to Undergraduate Students?

Mc Cauley, James
Abstract:
<p>The principal rationale for this research paper is to discuss the link between a lecturers Doctoral research activity and its perceived benefits or drawbacks for <em>undergraduate </em>students in todays’ Higher Education Institutions (HEI’s).The perceptions that six Doctoral academics have with regard to the impact their work has on such students was specifically investigated. In-depth interviews with them gleaned research results which demonstrate the degree to which their research activities have positive or negative consequences for undergraduate students.</p> <p>Broadly speaking, three main types of activities were identified as having a <em>positive</em> impact, First was the topic-specific ‘cutting-edge’ knowledge that was perceived as beneficial to students. Secondly, the broad-based liberal learning ethos they brought to their teaching added value, whereby some students basked in their ‘reflected glory’.Thirdly, their specific res...

Lessons from a Community-Based Participatory Research Project: Older People's and Researchers' Reflections
(2010)
TIMONEN, VIRPI; DOYLE, MARTHA
Abstract:
The ethical and practical importance of actively involving older people in the research process is increasingly articulated in the gerontology literature. This article contributes to the literature by outlining a community-based participatory research project that centered on the design and administration of a questionnaire exploring older people’s use and perceptions of community services. The authors discuss both older adults’ and the researchers’ views of the participatory process. The key lessons and challenges that emerged from the research are analyzed using the nine principles of community-based participatory research outlined by Israel et al. The authors question whether older people in all instances seek extensive involvement in all aspects of participatory projects and raise a number of questions that require further analysis before a robust and viable understanding of participatory research that safeguards against the tokenistic involvement of older people can be developed.

Making sense of diverse data sources: reflections on an applied research project
(1995)
Paris, Chris
Abstract:
The aim of my paper today is to explore some of the tensions between 'practical' and theoretical issues involved in applied social analysis. I try to accomplish this aim by reflecting on an applied research project on demographic trends and housing need in Northern Ireland (Heenan, Gray and Paris, 1994). I do not simply summarise that project, however, but use it as the base from which to raise some wider issues which confront researchers and policy makers working in applied social research. The rest of this paper is in five parts. Section 2 introduces the applied research study and outlines some of its main results. Section 3 identifies the strategic housing policy context within which the research was undertaken. Section 4 focuses on some of the research issues involved in analysing demographic change. Section 5 explores the relationships between demographic analysis and public sector housing need assessment methodologies. My conclusions are set out in Section 6.

Growing Research in a Traditionally Teaching-Oriented College
(2007)
Murphy, Mike; Dyrenfurth, Michael
Abstract:
<p>There is increasing pressure on universities to contribute to ‘the knowledge society’ by increasing the level of research activity and output within the university. This is particularly true in the sciences, engineering and technology. This increased pressure applies equally to traditionally teaching-oriented colleges (TTOC), although not at the same scale as research-intensive universities. For the TTOC, given the primacy of teaching, this paper discusses the nexus between teaching and research and the question ‘why do research?’ is addressed within the overarching goal of embedding a research culture within the college. Initiatives to develop and grow sustainable research activity in traditionally teaching-oriented colleges are introduced and discussed. It seeks to answer the question as to how such initiatives can prove successful in both North American and European colleges.</p>

Using the Technology of the Confessional as an Analytical Resource: Four Analytical Stances Towards Research Interviews in Discourse Analysis
(2007)
O'Rourke, Brendan; Pitt, Martyn
Abstract:
<p>Among the various approaches that have developed from FOUCAULT's work is an Anglophone discourse analysis that has attempted to combine FOUCAULTian insights with the techniques of Conversation Analysis. An important current methodological issue in this discourse analytical approach is its theoretical preference for "naturally occurring" rather than research interview data. A FOUCAULTian perspective on the interview as a research instrument, questions the idea of "naturally-occurring discourse". The "technology of the confessional" operates, not only within research interviews, but permeates other interactions as well. Drawing on FOUCAULT does not dismiss the problems of the interview as research instrument rather it shows they cannot be escaped by simply switching to more "natural" interactions. Combining these insights with recent developments within discourse analysis can provide analytical resources for, rather than barriers t...

Abstract:
The Information Management Group at Dublin City University has research themes such as digital multimedia, interoperable systems and database engineering. In the area of digital multimedia, a collaboration with our School of Electronic Engineering has formed the Centre for Digital Video Processing, a university designated research centre whose aim is to research, develop and evaluate content-based operations on digital video information. To achieve this goal, the range of expertise in this centre covers the complete gamut from image analysis and feature extraction through to video search engine technology and interfaces to video browsing. The Interoperable Systems Group has research interests in federated databases and interoperability, object modelling and database engineering. This report describes the research activities of the major groupings within the Information Management community in Dublin City University.

For debate... medical research output 1973-81: a romp around the United Kingdom research centres
(1984)
ADAMS, ROBERT DAVID
Abstract:
peer-reviewed
In order to measure output of medical research in the United Kingdom, the computerised database of Excerpta Medica was used to count the number of publications emanating from each centre of research based on a medical school in 1973-81. Data were amalgamated for the first four years (1973-6) and the final four years (1978-81) and the two sets of data were compared. Eight centres showed a substantial change (20% or more) between the first and second periods. In London three medical schools showed an increase in output and one showed a decrease in output. Elsewhere Leicester, Nottingham, and Southampton schools showed an increase and Bristol showed a decrease. The overall contribution of Cambridge did not increase over the decade but the proportion of clinical papers among those produced at Cambridge did increase. There are deficiencies in this type of exercise as all articles are treated equally, but probably some of these problems could be overcome in a more sophis...

The function of marketing research in the distributive system
(1948)
Holmes, Denis
Abstract:
Marketing research may be said to perform the same function in the economic system as the reconnaissance patrol performs in military manoeuvres. Its main purpose is to discover, as far in advance as possible, what are the intentions and probable future actions of "the enemy", who is, in this case, the general public. Our main concern is with the usages of commercial marketing research; but the possibilities of employing the methods described for the solution of other economic and social problems will be apparent. Marketing research is still very largely in the pioneering stage, and it is not possible as yet to forecast where its boundaries will be drawn.

Giving adult learners a voice after the inquest: A review of a mixed method approach to educational research
(2009)

Abstract:
This paper highlights the necessary application of mixed methods in educational research within the field of adult learners and lifelong learning in higher education to provide adult learners with a “voice”. The paper will introduce the reader to educational research through focusing on mixed methods and the theoretical frameworks within. Critical hermeneutic epistemology or transformative research (as espoused by Freire and Habermas in critical realism cited in Morrow and Torres, (2002)), social constructivism within phenomenology (see Vygotsky’s (1934) and Bruner (1996) work cited in Carlile and Jordan, 2005: 21-22) and pragmatism within the critical realism school (The Chicago School of biographical studies were grounded in pragmatism (West et al, 2007)) will be reviewed as examples of methodologies in the theoretical frameworks within mixed methods. This will then introduce the reader to some types of research methods used within mixed methods such as case study interviews, l...
