Time-series modelling for forecasting vehicular traffic flow in Dublin
(2005)
BASU, BISWAJIT; GHOSH, BIDISHA; O'MAHONY, MARGARET MARY
Abstract:
peer-reviewed
The traffic flow at an arterial intersection in a congested urban transportation network in the city of Dublin is modelled in this paper. Three different time-series models, viz. random walk model, Holt-Winters’ exponential smoothing technique and seasonal ARIMA model are used for modeling of traffic flow in Dublin. Simulation and short-term forecasting of univariate traffic flow data are done using these models. The data used for modeling are obtained from loop-detectors at a certain junction in the city center of Dublin. Seasonal ARIMA and Holt-Winters’ exponential smoothing technique give highly competitive forecasts and match considerably well with the observed traffic flow data during rush hours.

Abstract:
TCD-CS-2001-29
The computer games industry is now bigger than the film industry. Until recently, technology in games was driven by a desire to achieve real-time, photo-realistic graphics. To a large extent, this has now been achieved. As game developers look for new and innovative technologies to drive games development, AI is coming to the fore. This paper will examine how sophisticated AI techniques, such as those being used in mainstream academic research, can be applied to computer games and introduce three projects doing just that.

Best software test & quality assurance practices in the project life-cycle. An approach to the creation of a process for improved test & quality assurance practices in the project life-cycle of an SME
(2010)
Kevitt, Mark
Abstract:
The cost of software problems or errors is a significant problem to global industry, not only to the producers of the software but also to their customers and end users of the software. There is a cost associated with the lack of quality of software to companies who purchase a software product and also to the companies who produce the same piece of software. The task of improving quality on a limited cost base is a difficult one. The foundation of this thesis lies with the difficult task of evaluating software from its inception through its development until its testing and subsequent release. The focus of this thesis is on the improvement of the testing & quality assurance task in an Irish SME company with software quality problems but with a limited budget. Testing practices and quality assurance methods are outlined in the thesis explaining what was used during the software quality improvement process in the company. Projects conducted in the company are used for the research...

Abstract:
This symposium is based on the developing work of the research project ‘Access and Retention: Experiences of Non-Traditional Learners in HE’, funded by the European Commission Lifelong Learning Programme under Key Activity 1 “Policy Co-operation and Innovation” of the Transversal programme. (Project number: 135230-LLP-1-2007-1-UK-KA1-KA1SCR). The project has eight partners from seven different countries: England, Germany, Ireland, Poland, Scotland, Spain and Sweden and runs from 2008 to 2010. The overall aim of the project is to examine issues of access, retention and non-completion in relation to ‘non-traditional’ undergraduate students (young people and adults across a wide age range) in higher education on a comparative European basis.

Abstract:

BACKGROUND It is increasingly recognised that a well-functioning higher education system is a necessary condition for economic and social development. The sector however needs to considerably strengthen its capacity to make an effective contribution to poverty reduction. The Irish Aid funded Programme of Strategic cooperation is designed to facilitate the systematic integration and expansion of education and research institute engagement in development cooperation. OBJECTIVES This ambitious North-South programme aims to achieve capacity strengthening, through a medium term effort to invest in people, systems and knowledge building. The longer term consolidation of this collaboration aims to foster academic and non-academic leadership in development cooperation for eye care. METHODS The Mozambique Eyecare Project (MEP), a strategic collaboration between Dublin Institute of Technology, University of Ulster, Universidade Lúrio and the International Centre for Eyecare Educa...

Experimental Energy Performance of Open Cooling Towers Used Under Low and Variable Approach Conditions for Indirect Evaporative Cooling of Buildings
(2003)
Costelloe, Ben; Finn, Donal
Abstract:

The success of chilled ceilings and displacement ventilation systems as a means of sensible cooling in buildings has prompted a review of evaporative cooling technology as an effective means of generating the required cooling water. When such cooling water is generated at low approach conditions (2–5 K), at the higher temperatures required in these systems (14–18°C), very high levels of availability result. In many north western European locations the levels of availability are such that the prospect of supplanting rather than simply supplementing the refrigeration system, for sensible cooling purposes, arises. The viability of the technique, however, largely depends on achieving low approach conditions, at acceptable levels of energy performance. Hence the need to investigate the energy performance of the process. This paper presents the results of recent experimental research into: i) the achievement of low approach conditions in an evaporative cooling test rig; and ii) t...

Research and Policy Making
(2010)
RUANE, FRANCES
Abstract:
I am delighted to have the opportunity to present a lecture on Research and Policy Making. This topic is widely discussed internationally with an extensive international literature drawing on a range of different perspectives. The Irish literature is less extensive though the topic has received some attention at conferences and in lectures over the past decade. I believe that the topic is particularly timely given the scale of current challenges facing us today and the need to ensure that Irish society engages positively with the difficult decisions we face. For this to happen, those engaged in the policy making process need to *Ensure that people understand that tough decisions are unavoidable * Accept that tough decisions must be linked to perceived fairness * Show an awareness that they have learnt from what has happened in the past * Recognise that persistent inefficiencies in policy design and delivery are now less acceptable, and definitely unaffordable.

Abstract:
In this paper I aim to achieve two outcomes. The first is to open up thinking around how, in a context where governments are increasingly exploring and drawing on notions of fluid networks, joined-up government, interagency collaboration and so on, we can develop forms of policy sociology that can capture the complex 'what happened' of policy outcomes. Secondly, I want to briefly share the findings of my own case study research into one such government-instituted network in Victoria, Australia.

An assessment of some physical properties of lime-hemp concrete
(2010)
WALKER, ROSANNE; PAVIA, SARA
Abstract:
This work is part of a wider research programme that aims at producing alternatives to conventional building materials. The aim of this project is to investigate several physical properties of a sustainable, carbon-negative, lime-hemp biocomposites which can partially replace existing, non-biodegradable, non-sustainable, building materials of high embodied energy and high CO2 emissions. The shrinkage, flexural and compressive strengths of these lime-hemp concretes, made with either calcium lime or a commercial binder with a cement content and varying lime:hemp proportions (1:9, 1:1 and 3:1), were investigated according to the relevant European standards. The shrinkage and strength development at 7, 28 and 90 days were monitored. The relationship between shrinkage and binder type, hemp content and water content was observed. The development of the flexural and compressive strengths shared several characteristics but their behaviour departed in relation to increasing hemp content with...

Influence of mortar water content and workability on the mechanical behaviour of lime mortar masonry
(2010)
COSTIGAN, ADRIAN; PAVIA, SARA
Abstract:
Water content affects mortar properties and the quality of the resultant masonry, however, it is often subjectively determined by the mason by assessing workability. This lack of explicit methodology and data, can lead to lack of mortar consistency and field performance, adversely affecting full uptake of lime mortars into mainstream technology. The aim of this research is to assist develop consistent lime mortars of high quality, that would improve the strength and durability of masonry. To this aim, the paper investigates the compressive, flexural and bond strength of clay brick masonry bound with natural hydraulic lime mortar (NHL2), at variable water contents delivering different workabilities. The results evidenced that increasing the water content by 1% yields a 5mm increase in initial flow (from 165 to 170mm). It was found that this water increment significantly increases the mortar’s compressive strength simultaneously reducing its flexural strength, but it does not increase...

The Evolution of an Embedded Information Literacy Module: using Student Feedback and the Research Literature to Improve Student Performance
(2011)
Kavanagh, Allison
Abstract:

The purpose of this paper is to describe the development and evolution of the embedded information literacy (IL) module for first year BSc in Marketing students in Dublin Institute of Technology (DIT) over a three year period between 2007-8 and 2009-10. It describes the pedagogical theories underlining the teaching and assessment of the course in its original format, the reflective practice in which the library team engaged, and the subsequent changes made to the teaching and assessment of the course, informed by the research literature. The study uses performance in the assessment task, student feedback drawn from survey questionnaires and a focus group as the methods of data collection, although the analysis also takes into account anecdotal evidence. The paper provides details of the correlation each year between student performance in the information literacy and marketing components of the assessment task. It outlines the students’ evaluations of the course and, for th...

Comparative evaluation of research vs. Online MT systems
(2011)
Toral, Antonio ; Gaspari, Federico; Kumar Naskar, Sudip; Way, Andy
Abstract:
This paper reports MT evaluation experiments that were conducted at the end of year 1 of the EU-funded CoSyne 1 project for three language combinations, considering translations from German, Italian and Dutch into English. We present a comparative evaluation of the MT software developed within the project against four of the leading free webbased MT systems across a range of state-of-the-art automatic evaluation metrics. The data sets from the news domain that were created and used for training purposes and also for this evaluation exercise, which are available to the research community, are also described. The evaluation results for the news domain are very encouraging: the CoSyne MT software consistently beats the rule-based MT systems, and for translations from Italian and Dutch into English in particular the scores given by some of the standard automatic evaluation metrics are not too distant from those obtained by wellestablished statistical online MT systems.

(2011)
Leveling, Johannes; di Nunzio, Giorgio Maria ; Mandl, Thomas
Abstract:
Interactions between users and information access systems can be analyzed and studied to gather user preferences and to learn what a user likes the most, and to use this information to adapt the search to users and personalize the presentation of results. The LogCLEF lab - ”A benchmarking activity on Multilingual Log File Analysis: Language identification, query classification, success of a query” deals with information contained in query logs of search engines and digital libraries from which knowledge can be mined to understand search behavior in multilingual context. LogCLEF has created the first long-term standard collection for evaluation purposes in the area of log analysis. The LogCLEF 2011 lab is the continuation of the past two editions: as a pilot task in CLEF 2009, and a workshop in CLEF 2010. The Cross-Language Evaluation Forum (CLEF) promotes research and development in multilingual information access and is an activity of the PROMISE Network of Excellence.

Dynamic Capabilities, Absorptive Capacity and Knowledge Sharing: A Research Agenda into Explicating the Antecedent Factors Conducive to Subsidiary Bargaining Power
(2011)
Reilly, Marty; Sharkey Scott, Pamela
Abstract:

This research explores the relationship between relative absorptive capacity – a firm‟s proficiency at acquiring, assimilating, transforming and ultimately exploiting knowledge – and subsidiary bargaining power. In building upon the existing dynamic capabilities framework it is advanced that absorptive capacity, as a mediator, serves not only as a valid dynamic capability but also as an enabling mechanism and a vehicle by which subsidiary bargaining power can be achieved. The antecedent factors conducive to building relative absorptive capacity are critically evaluated and built upon in a subsidiary specific context. The contribution of these new factors provides insight into the enabling constructs conducive to building absorptive capacity as a dynamic capability in the subsidiary context and are proffered as; Strategic Posture, Network Inclusion, and Environmental Specific Factors. It is also posited that a subsidiary which is capable of exercising considera...

Car ownership and mode of transport to work in Ireland
(2010)
Commins, Nicola; Nolan, Anne
Abstract:
Rapid economic and demographic change in Ireland over the last decade, with associated increases in car dependence and congestion, has focused policy on encouraging more sustainable forms of travel. In this context, knowledge of current travel patterns and their determinants is crucial. In this paper, we extend earlier Irish research to examine the joint decision of car ownership and mode of transport to work. We employ cross-section micro-data from the 2006 Census of Population to estimate discrete choice models of car ownership and commuting mode choice for four sub-samples of the Irish population, based on residential location. Empirical results suggest that travel and supply-side characteristics such as travel time, costs, work location and public transport availability, as well as demographic and socio-economic characteristics such as age and household composition have significant effects on these decisions.

Negative equity in the Irish housing market
(2010)
Duffy, David
Abstract:
Having peaked in early 2007 Irish house prices have fallen steadily. Negative equity occurs if house price falls result in the house value being lower than the outstanding debt. Many in negative equity will be unaffected and will continue to pay their mortgage without difficulty. Negative equity can increase the probability of defaulting if it occurs at the same time as cashflow problems, possibly caused by illness or job loss. This paper estimates that 116,000 borrowers were in negative equity at the end of 2009, rising to 196,000 borrowers by end-2010. Borrowing at, or close to the price peak, high loan-to-value ratios, interest only mortgages and longer mortgage terms have contributed to higher numbers in negative equity. First-time buyers are more likely to be experiencing negative equity. The research shows that many of those who have mortgages are employed in sectors where employment prospects, to date, remain relatively robust. Policies that assist households overcome a loss ...

Temporary jobs in Ireland: does class influence job quality?
(2008)

Abstract:
Fixed term and casual employment have become increasingly common in OECD countries in the last decade. Research suggests that non-permanent contracts are associated with lower job quality. This paper examines differentials in three indicators of job quality in Ireland: hourly wage, probability of training and level of autonomy. The paper also examines four hypotheses on job quality derived from transaction cost and insider-outsider theories which suggest an important interaction between social class position, non-permanent employment andjob quality. Results show that fixed term and casual contracts are associated with lower earnings, less training and lower autonomy.
