What will I do? Toward an existential ethics for first person action research practice
(2013)
COGHLAN, DAVID
Abstract:
How first person practice engages with the process of valuing has not received much attention in action research. This article takes the question, `what will I do?? as the foundation for first person ethical inquiry. It explores the process of how we are able to experience, to understand and to make value judgements about what is `worthwhile? or `truly good? and so to make choices and to take action. The article marks a move away from a focus on ethics as a set of coherent concepts and definitions to a focus on interiority where ethics are considered in terms of appropriating the activities of valuing, a move from a system based on logic to a system grounded in method, from ethics imposed from outside to personal authenticity.

Radio Eireann listener research inquiries, 1953-1955
(1956)
Forecast, K. G.
Abstract:
Radio Eireann began conducting its own listener research in. March 1953 and has since completed four inquiries on listening in the Twenty Six Counties. The first referred to listening in the fortnight 15th-28th March 1953, the second to listening in the week 13th-19th September 1953 , the third to listening in the fortnight 14th-27th February 1954 , and the fourth (and latest) to listening in the fortnight 27th February-12th March 1955. People in all parts of the country have given information about their listening habits and likes and dislikes and the number of interviews with individual listeners now totals 25,904. All four inquiries were conducted in close collaboration with the Central Statistics Office which planned the method of inquiry and the selection of the samples, drafted the questionnaires, and undertook or supervised the tabulation of the findings. The purpose of the present paper is to describe how the inquiries were made and to present some of the principal results.

Agricultural education and research
(1953)
Senior, Brendan J.
Abstract:
In recent years agricultural education has been the subject of discussion and inquiry in many countries and much reorganisation of research, teaching and advisory services has been undertaken, in an effort to enhance the contribution which these services can make towards increased efficiency in agriculture and greater prosperity for the farmer. The object of this paper is to review these changes and for purposes of comparison to outline the origin, development and present position of the system in Ireland. The subject has been divided into three parts. Firstly, an attempt is made to trace the historical development of Irish research and teaching institutes and agricultural advisory services. The second part gives a brief description of systems in certain other countries which might be of interest, while finally, the present position and future outlook in Ireland is briefly discussed.

Environmental and social transport costs: a case study of Ireland
(2005)
O'MAHONY, MARGARET MARY
Abstract:
peer-reviewed
The aim of the EU funded UNITE research project was to provide information about the costs, benefits and revenues of all transport modes including environmental and social costs. The project involved compiling accounts for 18 countries across Europe with each country having its own set of accounts in such a format that comparisons, where possible, could be made. The paper focuses on the latter two sets of costs i.e. environmental and social for Ireland. The account presented here is a pilot account (rather than an ideal account) i.e. the actual, feasible accounts given the available data. The costs are reported and documented at the current level of transport demand for the reference year 1998 but data for 1996 and projections for 2005 are also included where data and historical trends allow. The paper concludes with some comparisons between transport costs in Ireland and some of the other European countries examined in the UNITE project. The accident costs in Irel...

Who decides what criteria are important to consider in exploring the outcomes of Conversation Approaches? A Participatory Health Research Study.
(2016)

Abstract:
Approximately 176,000 new individuals in the United Kingdom and Ireland are diagnosed with stroke annually with up to one third experiencing aphasia. Qualitative research methods are increasingly used to capture the complexity of service users’ experiences of health and illness; however, the voice of service users with aphasia continues to be limited in published healthcare literature. This participatory research study included people with aphasia as co-researchers in the exploration of aphasia and a Conversation Partner Programme (CPP)

Medical education, training and research: the cost to teaching hospitals.
(1993)
Lynch, Fergal
Abstract:
The study was requested by the Department of Health to estimate the approximate costs incurred by teaching hospitals from their medical education, training and research functions. While it was clear that the bulk of undergraduate costs fell on the universities, there was a growing recognition that teaching hospitals incurred additional expenses as both undergraduates and non consultant hospital doctors (NCHDs) received hospital-based training. The costs incurred by teaching hospitals might include the time taken for formal and informal teaching and ward rounds; additional tests and consultations that arise in the teaching environment; more intensive or sophisticated treatments offered to patients; any consequent increase in length of stay; and certain research costs.

Abstract:
Depression is one of the major mental health problems in the world today. It has been estimated that approximately 6% of the population are likely to suffer a major depressive episode and despite the availability of effective antidepressant drugs, there is no known cure for the illness. The Affective Disorders Research Unit was established in 1985 to study some aspects of depression that are of particular interest to clinical and experimental researchers in Ireland. The results of the activities of the unit over the five year period of its existence are largely contained in 109 publications that may be found in international journals.

Watson, Dorothy; Williams, James; Kinsella, Ray; University College Dublin. Graduate School of Business. Centre of Insurance Studies.
Abstract:
These issues are essentially structural. They are amenable to solutions based on rigorous analysis and informed by the kind of research material presented by the ESRI in this report. But these issues - important as rhey are - are interrelated with broader societal issues arising from recent and prospective advances in biogenetics (including cloning) and their implications for Acute Health Services. The development of objective ethical principles by which to evaluate, and legislate for, these challenges need to be addressed in the development of the Irish Acute Health Care System. The whole aim of this research report. as the culmination of a five-year partnership with the policy, medical. insurance and other stakeholders, is to provide an independent rigorous and systematic resource for all of us to begin this process of change and to provide us with some insights into how this might best he accomplished to meet the requirements of rhe national population.
UNLABELLED: Recently, there has been an increasing interest in the development and characterization of patient-derived tumor xenograft (PDX) models for cancer research. PDX models mostly retain the principal histologic and genetic characteristics of their donor tumor and remain stable across passages. These models have been shown to be predictive of clinical outcomes and are being used for preclinical drug evaluation, biomarker identification, biologic studies, and personalized medicine strategies. This article summarizes the current state of the art in this field, including methodologic issues, available collections, practical applications, challenges and shortcomings, and future directions, and introduces a European consortium of PDX models.

...

Research into Evaporative Cooling of Buildings in Maritime Climates
(2002)
Costelloe, Ben; Finn, Donal
Abstract:
Concern with environmental emissions has focused attention on traditional forms of energy use in buildings, with a view to reducing and making more rational use of energy consumption. One area of concern is the traditional, refrigeration based, commercial air conditioning system, which has high levels of electrical power consumption in fans and refrigeration compressors. There is also concern among building owners and design teams, supported by the PROBE series of post occupancy studies, conducted by the CIBSE, that many buildings, with traditional forms of air conditioning, under perform in terms of occupant satisfaction, ease of operation and control, maintenance costs and successful commissioning. These developments have led to a search for lower energy and more satisfactory alternatives. Research into evaporative cooling indicates that the technique can offer a satisfactory alternative to refrigeration based cooling in a number of appropriate applications.

Determining the role of the Internet in violent extremism and terrorism: six suggestions for progressing research
(2016)
Conway, Maura
Abstract:
Some scholars and others are skeptical of a significant role for the Internet in processes of violent radicalization. There is increasing concern on the part of other scholars, and increasingly also policymakers and publics, that easy availability of violent extremist content online may have violent radicalizing effects. This article identifies a number of core questions regarding the interaction of violent extremism and terrorism and the Internet, particularly social media, that have yet to be adequately addressed and supplies a series of six follow-up suggestions, flowing from these questions, for progressing research in this area. These suggestions relate to (1) widening the range of types of violent online extremism being studied beyond violent jihadis; (2) engaging in more comparative research, not just across ideologies, but also groups, countries, languages, and social media platforms; (3) deepening our analyses to include interviewing and virtual ethnographic approaches; (4)...

Is He a Dramatist? Or, Something Singular! Staging Dickensian drama as practice-led research
(2016)
Hofer-Robinson, Joanna; Cox Jensen, Oskar; Whipday, Emma
Abstract:
Charles Dickens is not usually remembered as a dramatist; in fact, the contemporary success of his subsequently neglected dramatic writing is predicated on the absence of the authorial persona that we now consider ‘Dickensian’. Drawing on findings from a practice-led research project, which staged Dickens’s burletta Is She His Wife? or, Something Singular!, this article examines what performing this play can tell us about Dickensian dramaturgy and nineteenth-century theatrical culture. Interrogating the role of practice-led research in the study of nineteenth-century drama, we suggest that this methodology allows contemporary scholars to look beyond Dickens’s contemporary significance as a canonised literary and heritage figure. Our historically informed production illuminates the ways in which Dickens used material properties, music, and performance strategies to stage-manage his own disappearing act as a playwright.

Abstract:
Open Access is a movement within scholarly research across all disciplines whereby the outputs, including publications and data, are made freely available to everyone without restriction. In the case of Open Access to data, it also covers data from public bodies like local governments. In Ireland we are slowly making progress with open access to publications and poor progress to research data while our Open Access to data from public bodies is progressing well

Art-historical thematic research collections: from theory to practice. Case study: Paintings of the interior of the Oude Kerk in delft

Abstract:
This thesis explores a thematic collection of architectural paintings of the Oude Kerk in Delft that belong to a unique genre of architectural paintings that flourished in the Dutch Republic around the middle of the seventeenth-century. This body of work aims to challenge the common hypothesis that the perspective, and what follows, the proportions and composition of the paintings, was distorted. The presence of distortions is undeniable, although, there is a lack of comprehensive and detailed examination of all the known paintings of the Oude Kerk in Delft. It is the first time that the collection of over eighty paintings representing the same space is examined as a whole. Additionally, as an unprecedented working collection on the theme, it creates a new digital research environment to use for further study of the Oude Kerk in Delft and paintings of other church interiors in the 17th century Dutch art. This environment is the thesis?s practice-based component, the art-historical t...

Abstract:
Background: Recruitment of general practices and their patients into research studies is frequently reported as a challenge. The Preventing and Lessening Exacerbations of Asthma in School-aged children Associated with a New Term (PLEASANT) trial recruited 142 general practices, across England and Wales and delivered the study intervention to time and target. Aims: To describe the process of recruitment used within the cluster randomised PLEASANT trial and present results on factors that influenced recruitment. Methods: Data were collected on the number of and types of contact used to gain expression of interest and subsequent randomisation into the PLEASANT trial. Practice size and previous research experience were also collected. Results: The mean number of contacts required to gain expression of interest were m=3.01 (s.d. 1.6) and total number of contacts from initial invitation to randomisation m=6.8 (s.d. 3.5). Previous randomised controlled trial involvement (hazard ratio (HR)=...

Research protocol for a case study of crowdsourcing software development
(2014)
Stol, Klaas-Jan; Fitzgerald, Brian
Abstract:
Crowdsourcing is an emerging topic within software engineering research. This report presents the protocol for our case study of crowdsourcing at a multi-national company. The findings of the case study are presented in a paper in the proceedings of the 36th International Conference on Software Engineering (2014) (see ref. [37]). This protocol presents additional details that provide more insight regarding the background, design and execution of our study. The research design can also be used for replicating the case study so as to be able to more easily compare different case studies.

Abstract:
Young women and girls formerly associated with armed forces and armed groups face multiple challenges. Many become pregnant or have children while they are associated and face stigma and marginalization upon reintegration into civilian communities. This article describes a multi-year participatory action research study that took place in twenty communities in Liberia, Sierra Leone, and northern Uganda from 2006 – 2009 and included more than 650 young mother participants. We find that this community-based approach to reintegration improved the wellbeing of young mother participants and their children. We discuss the challenges and limitations of conducting participatory action research with war-affected young people and make recommendations for future reintegration programming.

Abstract:
Background: The University College Dublin (UCD) PPI Ignite Connect Network will fundamentally embed public and patient involvement (PPI) in health-related research, education and training, professional practice and administration in UCD’s institutional structures and procedures. A significant focus of the programme of work is on actively engaging and developing long-term reciprocal relationships with seldom heard groups, via our ten inaugural partners. Methods: This rapid realist review will explore what are the mechanisms that are important in actively engaging seldom heard groups in health and social care research. The review process will follow five iterative steps: (1) clarify scope, (2) search for evidence, (3) appraise primary studies and extract data, (4) synthesise evidence and draw conclusions, and (5) disseminate findings. The reviewers will consult with expert and reference panels to focus the review, provide local contextual insights and develop a programme theory consi...

Online cancer support: a pilot study to implement and evaluate a support blog at ARC Cancer Support House (Cork)
(2013)

Abstract:
This study is a Community Action Research Links (CARL) project between UCC Social Work Department and Cork ARC Cancer Support House. The study explores the feasibility of Cork ARC Cancer Support House offering an online Support Blog. A participatory research approach was adopted. An Initial Survey was carried out to discover if a Support Blog would be a support service people would use and what helpful features it should contain. A Support Blog was then piloted for 2 months. Following this, a Final Survey was completed to gauge if users found the Support Blog helpful and in what way. This project presents the findings of both Surveys and the experiences of the Cork ARC team from piloting the Blog. The project concluded that it would be feasible for Cork ARC to offer a support Blog depending on a number of conditions that would need to be considered for the support to be offered in a long-term capacity. These are highlighted in the recommendations of the study.

Abstract:
Background: Longitudinal cohort studies gather large amounts of data over time, often without direct benefit to participants. A positive experience may encourage retention in the study, and participants may benefit in unanticipated ways. Objective: To explore first?time mothers? experiences of taking part in a longitudinal cohort study and completing self?administered surveys during pregnancy and at 3, 6, 9 and 12 months? postpartum. Design: Content analysis of comments written by participants in the Maternal health And Maternal Morbidity in Ireland study's five self?completion surveys, a multisite cohort study exploring women's health and health problems during and after pregnancy. This paper focuses on what women wrote about taking part in the research. Ethical approval was granted by the site hospitals and university. Setting and participants: A total of 2174 women were recruited from two maternity hospitals in Ireland between 2012 and 2015. Findings: A total of 1000 co...
