Ireland Country Report: Eufori Study. European Foundations for Research and Innovation
(2015)
Donnelly Cox, Gemma; Cannon, Sheila
Abstract:
Through the application of the EUFORI analytical framework to R&I foundations in Ireland, we have established that the field of foundation philanthropy is small, and foundation funding for research and innovation comprises a very small part of it. On one level, this is no surprise. Donoghue?s review of the total population of foundations in Ireland (2004, 2007) concluded that there are very few Irish grantmaking or operating foundations. Anheier and Daly (2007) classify Ireland as a statist peripheral welfare regime (Anheier and Daly, 2007) ? one in which the importance of foundations is low, and the ones that do exist tend to function as service providers that compensate for the shortcomings of the State. However, on another level the relative absence of R&I foundations is quite puzzling. Ireland has a large nonprofit sector and an economy that is highly dependent on investment in research and innovation. As the second and third citations quotations on the previous page ill...

Abstract:
There is currently a lack of representative, systematic and harmonised greenhouse gas (GHG) observations covering the variety of natural and human-altered biomes that occur in Africa. This impedes the long-term assessment of the drivers of climate change, in addition to their impacts and feedback loops at the continental scale, but also limits our understanding of the contribution of the African continent to the global carbon (C) cycle. Given the current and projected transformation of socio-economic conditions in Africa (i.e. the increasing trend of urbanisation and population growth) and the adverse impacts of climate change, the development of a GHG research infrastructure (RI) is needed to support the design of suitable mitigation and adaptation strategies required to assure food, fuel, nutrition and economic security for the African population. This paper presents the initial results of the EU-African SEACRIFOG project, which aims to design a GHG observation RI for Africa. The ...

Social movements Research and the Movement of Movements: Studying Resistance to Neoliberal Globalisation
(2007)
Cox, Laurence; Nilsen, Alf Gunvald
Abstract:
This article explores the state of research on the "movement of movements" against neoliberal globalisation. Starting from a general consideration of the significance of the movement and the difficulties inherent in studying it, it discusses the literature on the movement from within social movement studies, and argues that the response from social movement researchers falls short of what could be expected in terms of adequacy to the movement and its own knowledge production. It explores some effects of this failure and locates the reasons for it in the unacknowledged relationship between social movements theorising and activist theorising. The article then discusses the possible contributions that can be made by Marxist and other engaged academic writers, as well as the significance of the extensive theoretical literature generated by activists within the movement. It concludes by stating the importance of dialogue between activist and academic theorising and research in ...

Post-Positivist Approaches to Research
(2006)
Ryan, Anne B.
Abstract:
This chapter outlines the philosophical thinking behind this book. Take your time reading it and don't be put off if you encounter words and terms that are unfamiliar to you. These terms will become clearer as you read on. The chapter outlines the background and assumptions for many of the techniques and suggestions put forward in later chapters. Without some knowledge of philosophy or context, technique can become an empty process. Philosophy provides principles that can act as a guide when procedural advice does not address a particular issue. You might like to read this chapter at the start of your thesis process, But it is likely that you will dip into it from time to time, as certain questions arise out of the process of researching and writing the thesis. In this chapter, we briefly examine positivist ideas about research: what they are, where they come from, why they dominate the general view of research and why there is a need to move beyond their limitations. We go on ...

Gramsci, movements and method: the politics of activist research

Gramsci, movements and method: the politics of activist research
(1998)
Cox, Laurence
Abstract:
The western Marxist tradition identifies the active engagement of human beings with their environment and with each other as a central ontological category. This physical, verbal and cognitive engagement is embodied through skill: the practical availability of what are often prediscursive modes of action, generated in collective learning processes such as conflict or alliance, materially sedimented in experience, practices, language, networks and so on, and thus continually subject to transformation or loss, but also constantly available as a resource for creative action. Movements, from above or below, are then different possible "proto-hegemonic" attempts at developing this potential from different starting-points and mobilising it around shared social projects and against others. Strategies of research into movement contexts parallel these possible organising modes: given the diversity of participants' orientations and of external interventions, there is necessari...

Urban Megatrends: Towards A European Research Agenda

Urban Megatrends: Towards A European Research Agenda
(2014)
Kitchin, Rob
Abstract:
Evidence of the first urban settlements can be traced back a couple of millennia. Until the end of the 18th century, however, cities remained relatively small in size and contained a small proportion of the overall population. However, from this point onwards, the process of urbanisation - the movement of people from the countryside to the city and the rapid development of the built environment and urban infrastructures - accelerated in conjunction with industrialisation. In Western countries, cities became the drivers of regional and national economies and the proportion of the population living in urban settlements rapidly increased throughout the nineteenth and twentieth century. At present, we are witnessing an economic slow down in the developed and largely urban economies of North America and Europe and unprecedented growth in South America, Africa and especially in the rapidly growing economies of Asia. These Asian Tigers are also experiencing mass rural-urban migration, as t...

Informed Policy-Making: The Contribution of Comparative Research in Education
(2014)
Kenny, Michael
Abstract:
The report, Mind the gap: Educational inequalities across EU regions (2012), notes that there is considerable variation in the nature, scale and effects of educational inequalities across EU regions (p.11.). The implication of this disparity is that balanced regional development and economic growth is hindered (p.14.), inequality between regions is compounded (p.149.), and the disparity causes a brain drain towards more advantaged regions (p.11.). Prior to this module I would have considered this statement as a factual statement of a trend in education. I would not have considered the considerable complexity in comparing education inter-regionally and internationally. This module has made me aware of strengths and weaknesses of comparative research in education resulting in comparative educational data. In general, the strengths of comparisons include that they can flout hierarchies and question knowledge (Radhakrishnan, 2009, passim) and that they can make research more universal (...

The Role of Action Research in the Study of Small Business Marketing and Retailer Loyalty Card Data
(2012)
Donnelly, Christina; Simmons, Geoff; Armstrong, Gillian; Fearne, Andrew
Abstract:
The small business is challenged on a daily basis to compete in an ever demanding and ever expanding marketplace. As a result of new technologies such as market intelligence databases, small business owner-managers are playing catch–up with larger and more resource based firms in maintaining current insight into the market. Larger firms have typically been better positioned to afford and analyse the latest market intelligence data for internal marketing purposes. This study provides insight into three action research case studies through a participatory action research, investigating the ways in which traditionally informal small business owner-managers addressed marketing challenges through the utilisation of free access of formalised retailer loyalty card data for the first time in their daily business marketing activities.

Proposing a Meta-Theoretical Framework for Innovation Research
(2012)
Costello, Gabriel J.; Donnellan, Brian
Abstract:
The importance of theory in the management discipline is the subject of ongoing debate and there have been recent calls for novel conceptualizations to stimulate research. In the area of innovation, one of the main conclusions of the influential Minnesota studies was the need to develop a metatheory. This paper examines the role of theory in the development of the research agenda for the area of innovation. Our approach is to build on the seminal work of the Minnesota studies and on the innovation perspectives of Carl Slappendel. The result of the study is a proposition that Ecological Systems Theory (EST) addresses many of the gaps that emerged from the analysis of the literature. Consequently the paper makes a contribution by developing a meta-theoretical framework for the study of innovation derived from the EST schemata.

A Dialogical Action Research Approach to Innovation as Organisational Change
(2008)
Costello, Gabriel J.; Rochford, Colm; Donnellan, Brian
Abstract:
This paper argues that dialogical action research (AR), recently proposed to the IS community by Mårtensson & Lee (2004), provides a novel approach to address the perennial call for more relevant and rigorous collaboration between academics and practitioners. The work is presented in the context of a case study of APC-MGE Ireland, a subsidiary of the critical power and cooling services division of the Schneider Electric Corporation. The research proposes to make a contribution by presenting a study of using dialogical AR as an impetus for the process of change involved in the re-orientation of a subsidiary to an innovative organisation. Furthermore, the work builds on Ciborra’s challenge to return to the “origins of phenomenology” and argues that the philosophical hermeneutics of Hans-Georg Gadamer can provide a solid underpinning for dialogical AR. The paper now proceeds as follows. Firstly a literature review is provided on innovation and organisational change building on the ...

Carey, Aine
Abstract:
A review article of the title: Dynamic Research Support for Academic Libraries (ed Starr Hoffman), London: Facet Publishing, 2016. Editor Starr Hoffman makes the case for libraries to think collaboratively and creatively in a rapidly changing environment. The book sets out to consider new models of research support, and to inspire practitioners to think more deeply about how we identify, and then successfully meet, the needs of our particular user base.

Studying social movements in a movement-become-state: research and practice in postcolonial Ireland
(2016)
Cox, Laurence
Abstract:
The site of some of western Europe’s most dramatic movement episodes, Ireland is a peculiar case for studying social movement research. The 1798 uprising was a significant element of the Atlantic Revolutions; the Land War (1879 - 1882) initiated one of the world’s most successful land reforms, with a near-complete transition from landlord-tenant relationships to peasant proprietorship; the period between 1916 and 1923 saw one of western Europe’s few successful independence movements; the Northern Irish “troubles” from 1969 – 1994 were Europe’s longest-running episode of lethal internal violence; 1978 - 1981 saw one of the few outright defeats of nuclear power worldwide; the women’s and GLBTQ movements brought about a more dramatic change from institutionalised Catholic power than in most Northern contexts; and working-class community organising has played a role in Ireland comparable to Latin American contexts. On the face of it, a strong social movements research agenda would seem ...

Neither wasted nor wanted: theorising the failure to dispossess objects of ambiguous value

Abstract:
Consumer research has traditionally presented the consumption process in three stages – acquisition, consumption and disposition (de Coverly et al. 2008; Jacoby, Berning, and Dietvorst 1977) and it is assumed that consumers will naturally move through the process (Cross, Leizerovici, and Pirouz 2017). Whereas commodity acquisition and utilisation have been researched extensively, disposition has received scant attention – a curiosity given its ubiquity and significance in consumer’s lives (Arnould and Thompson 2005). Disposition is a significant issue. Whether it is a painful process, during which individuals endure an experience akin to the death of some piece of themselves or the joyful shedding of objects imbued with an unwanted self, disposition is an integral part of modern life (Lastovicka and Fernandez 2005; Price et al. 2000). There are exceptions to this process, for example, hoarders, collectors and particularly frugal consumers retain commodities beyond their expected lif...

Preparing students for social work practice in contemporary societies: Insights from a transnational research network

Abstract:
This paper arises from a transnational research network investigating social work education. University based social work programmes from four European countries (Ireland, Italy, Norway, and the U.K.) shared a similar concern: how educators can support students to prepare for social work practice. The relationship between social work education and practice is not straightforward; the partnership between educators and practitioners in helping social work students to flourish in practice remains a complex and, at times, controversial issue. Furthermore, it is not enough to help students learn the mechanics of day to day tasks, it is also important to motivate them in becoming social workers stimulated by principles of human rights and social justice. With this in mind, each educator conducted a local study using qualitative and/or quantitative methods to explore what influences the development of such practitioners. Analysis from the studies indicate three key issues for social work e...

Abstract:
This paper describes an 18-month digital learning project, designed to support the development of students’ digital research skills in UCD’s BA and BSocSc programmes. The project involved the creation of six original interactive e-tutorials focusing on key digital research topics, which were embedded in the institutional VLE (Blackboard) in a blended learning structure, and rolled out in four modules in the School of Information & Communication Studies in 2017/2018. During the post-evaluation phase, student feedback was gathered via an online survey and in two qualitative focus groups. This paper outlines the rationale, implementation and results of the project, and offers insights into incorporating digital learning into undergraduate programmes, and student experiences of blended learning.

Abstract:
Bees and the pollination services they deliver are beneficial to both food crop production, and for reproduction of many wild plant species. Bee decline has stimulated widespread interest in assessing hazards and risks to bees from the environment in which they live. While there is increasing knowledge on how the use of broad-spectrum insecticides in agricultural systems may impact bees, little is known about effects of other pesticides (or plant protection products; PPPs) such as herbicides and fungicides, which are used more widely than insecticides at a global scale. We adopted a systematic approach to review existing research on the potential impacts of fungicides and herbicides on bees, with the aim of identifying research approaches and determining knowledge gaps. While acknowledging that herbicide use can affect forage availability for bees, this review focussed on the potential impacts these compounds could have directly on bees themselves. We found that most studies have be...
