Process support for product line application engineering.
(2011)
O'Leary, Padraig; Richardson, Ita
Abstract:
The derivation of products from a software product line is a time-consuming and expensive activity. Despite recognition that an effective process could alleviate many of the difficulties associated with product derivation, existing approaches have different scope, emphasize different aspects of the derivation process and are frequently too specialized to serve as a general solution. In response to a need for methodological support, we developed Pro-PD (Process model for Product Derivation). Pro-PD was iteratively developed and evaluated through four research stages involving academic and industrial sources. This paper illustrates how Pro-PD provides systematic support by using product derivation preparation as an example.

Negotiation towards service level agreements: a life cycle based approach
(2011)
Hashmi, Sajid Ibrahim; Haque, Rafiqul; Schmieders, Eric; Richardson, Ita
Abstract:
Service Based Systems (SBSs) are composed of loosely coupled services. Different stakeholders in these systems, e.g. service providers, service consumers, and business decision makers, have different types of concerns which may be dissimilar or inconsistent. Service level agreements (SLAs) play a major role in ensuring the quality of SBSs. They stipulate the availability, reliability, and quality levels required for an effective interaction between service providers and consumers. It has been noticed that because of having conflicting priorities and concerns, conflicts arise between service providers and service consumers while negotiating over the functionality of potential services. Since these stakeholders are involved with different phases the life cycle, it is really important to take into consideration these life cycle phases for proposing any kind of SLA negotiation methodology. In this research, we propose a stakeholder negotiation strategy for Service Level Agreements, whic...

Cell Proliferation Tracking Using Graphene Sensor Arrays
(2012)
HEGNER, MARTIN; DUESBERG, GEORG STEFAN
Abstract:
The development of a novel label-free graphene sensor array is presented. Detection is based on modification of graphene FET devices and specifically monitoring the change in composition of the nutritive components in culturing medium. Micro-dispensing of Escherichia coli in medium shows feasibility of accurate positioning over each sensor while still allowing cell proliferation. Graphene FET device fabrication, sample dosing, and initial electrical characterisation have been completed and show a promising approach to reducing the sample size and lead time for diagnostic and drug development protocols through a label-free and reusable sensor array fabricated with standard and scalable microfabrication technologies.

Mutation of Semaphorin-6A Disrupts Limbic and Cortical Connectivity and Models Neurodevelopmental Psychopathology
(2011)

Abstract:
Psychiatric disorders such as schizophrenia and autism are characterised by cellular disorganisation and dysconnectivity across the brain and can be caused by mutations in genes that control neurodevelopmental processes. To examine how neurodevelopmental defects can affect brain function and behaviour, we have comprehensively investigated the consequences of mutation of one such gene, Semaphorin-6A, on cellular organisation, axonal projection patterns, behaviour and physiology in mice. These analyses reveal a spectrum of widespread but subtle anatomical defects in Sema6A mutants, notably in limbic and cortical cellular organisation, lamination and connectivity. These mutants display concomitant alterations in the electroencephalogram and hyper-exploratory behaviour, which are characteristic of models of psychosis and reversible by the antipsychotic clozapine. They also show altered social interaction and deficits in object recognition and working memory. Mice with mutations in Sema6...

Genetic channel capacity revisited
(2011)
Balado, Félix
Abstract:
We revisit previous analyses on the computation of the maximum mutual information between a genetic sequence and its mutated versions down the generations, taking into account the protein translation mechanism of the genetic machinery. This amounts to the application of Shannon's capacity to the study of the transmission of genetic information. Studies on this subject were started by Yockey and then followed by a number of researchers. Here we refine prior analyses employing the Kimura model of base substitution mutations, which is more realistic than the Jukes-Cantor model used by all previous research on this topic. Furthermore we undertake exact computations where prior works just used approximations, and we propose two practical applications of genetic capacity.

Toward a framework for customizing public services
(2011)
Haque, Rafiqul; Richardson, Ita; Taher, Yehia; Van den Heuvel, Willem-Jan
Abstract:
Processes are the main constituents of public services and as such demand correct and complete execution. Increasingly however, governments feel the pressuring need to deliver public services more quickly and personalized to the needs of local communities or citizens. This not only jeopardizes their quality but also requires them to form teams that combine deep technical and programming knowledge with business experts..It is the aim of this research project to deliver a framework that allows non IT-experts to customize prefabricated and generic processes by parameterizing them. This customization revolves around reference guidelines that accommodate multiple-viewpoints in a consistent manner.

Published Version
Differences in the prevalence of thrombophilias in different ethnic populations have been demonstrated. Because the Australian population includes many different ethnic groups, we sought to assess the effect of ethnicity in our Australian prenatal population on the prevalence of thrombophilic polymorphisms. Asymptomatic, nulliparous women (n = 1,129) recruited for a large prospective study were included in this analysis. These women had no personal or family history of venous thromboembolism and were not known to be carrying an inherited or acquired thrombophilia. Ethnicity was determined at recruitment, and women were categorized as being of Northern European, Southern European, Middle Eastern, Asian, or Other ethnicity. These women underwent genotyping for the following polymorphisms: factor V Leiden G1691A...

The decline of laparoscopic sterilisation
(2008)
Horgan, Richard P.; Higgins, John R.; Burke, G
Abstract:
Published Version
Female sterilisation is an extensively used method of contraception all over the world but there appears to be a decline in the performance of this procedure in Ireland. There also appears to be an increased uptake of safe, long-acting contraceptive alternatives. We set out to establish the extent of the decline of laparoscopic sterilisation and to explore possible explanations. Data for female sterilisation from Ireland was obtained from the Hospital In-Patient Enquiry Scheme (HIPE) section of the Economic and Social Research Institute for the years 1999 to 2004. Recent sales figures for long acting reversible contraceptives, specifically the levo-norgestrel-loaded intrauterine system (LNG-IUS) (Mirena) and the etonogestrel implant (Implanon) were also obtained. Laparoscopic tubal ligations reduced from 2,566(1999) to 910 (2004). In the corresponding period the use of Mirena coils increased from 4,840 (1999) to 17,077 (2004).

Abstract:
Background: Prediction of protein structures from their sequences is still one of the open grand challenges of computational biology. Some approaches to protein structure prediction, especially ab initio ones, rely to some extent on the prediction of residue contact maps. Residue contact map predictions have been assessed at the CASP competition for several years now. Although it has been shown that exact contact maps generally yield correct three-dimensional structures, this is true only at a relatively low resolution (3–4 Å from the native structure). Another known weakness of contact maps is that they are generally predicted ab initio, that is not exploiting information about potential homologues of known structure. Results: We introduce a new class of distance restraints for protein structures: multi-class distance maps. We show that C trace reconstructions based on 4-class native maps are significantly better than those from residue contact maps. We then build two predictors o...

Towards Productive Reflective Practice in Microteaching
(2011)
Donnelly, Roisin; Fitzmaurice, Marian
Abstract:
<p>This paper details a small-scale, research study into lecturers‟ perceived impact of microteaching within a postgraduate certificate in teaching in higher education in Ireland. Participants engage on the programme for a range of reasons: to broaden expertise and knowledge beyond the disciplinary boundaries within which they primarily operate; to build on and develop their scholarly profiles; and to reflect on their teaching experience to date. Participation in microteaching has provided a sense of validation for much of what these lecturers do and how they do it, which has resulted in ongoing critical reflection and peer discussion. Although initially giving rise to anxiety among some participants, microteaching has led to greater self-awareness and increased confidence in participants‟ own ability and expertise, and a reaffirmation of their teaching style and practice. There is a role for academic developers to support lecturers to be reflective and reflexive in order that...

The Role of the PBL Tutor Within Blended Academic Development
(2011)
Donnelly, Roisin
Abstract:
<p>The central idea of this study is using blended problem-based learning (PBL) in an academic development context with key roles emphasised: academic staff in the role of students and the academic developer as the tutor. The context is a module entitled „Designing eLearning‟ on a postgraduate programme for academic staff in Ireland. It is acknowledged that an e-learning literature exists that calls for more effective use of technology. Part of that exploration of e-learning value requires a refocusing on pedagogy. Increasingly PBL is one of the pedagogies associated with the learning technologies available to educators today. Data was collected from face-to-face PBL tutorials, transcripts of online discussion boards, focus groups and student reflective papers generated over two years and involving all the participants (17) who chose to undertake the module as part of their professional development. The findings highlight key issues for the complex role of the PBL tutor in fur...

What Now?: Evaluating eLearning CPD Practice in Irish Third-Level Education
(2007)
Donnelly, Roisin; O'Rourke, Kevin Charles
Abstract:
<p>The internet has made it impossible for higher education institutions to ignore technology in fulfilling their strategic mission and respond to the expectations of a diverse student body. In the Republic of Ireland, as elsewhere, the use of online technologies has become an increasingly important challenge in academic staff development, and on the surface, eLearning has been moderately successful in the teaching and learning environment. However, given the rapid rate of change in both technology and the increasing diversity in academic staff and students, to describe accurately the nature of eLearning for academic staff development is near impossible. There has been a constant balancing and rebalancing of the pedagogical and technical elements in teaching and learning online, and while much of the talk has been about pedagogy, many of the problems have been technical in nature. Furthermore, the issue of transferability of innovative approaches and developing the capacity to...

Fostering of Creativity Within an Imaginative Curriculum in Higher Education
(2004)
Donnelly, Roisin
Abstract:
<p>Psychology is frequently used as a foundation discipline in the training of adult educators because it addresses those questions which naturally emerge from an engagement with adult learning and teaching (Tennant, 1997). The professional context which forms the focus of this article is no different. By providing academic support for lecturers in a higher education institution in Ireland, there is a desire to develop a sustainable curriculum model whereby by working with them on designing and developing creative curricula in their various subject disciplines in the arts and sciences they, in turn, pass the benefits of this on to their students.</p>

Encouraging Attendence in Tutorials for Quantity Surveying Studies Through Assessment
(2011)
Kehily, Dermot
Abstract:
<p>Construction Economics and Management in Dublin Institute of Technology (DIT) educates and prepares students to become Quantity Surveyors (Construction Economists) in the Construction Industry. Arguably the most important subject on the course and the cornerstone of the profession is the ability of the students and graduates to carry out a technical function called ‘measurement’ or ‘take off’ from construction plans and drawings. Graduates of Construction Economics and Management may spend up to two years carrying out measurement for their employers before they progress to the more professional practices of Quantity Surveying. The importance of measurement and take off inthe profession cannot be overstated and thus the subject is included in all four years of the Construction Economics and Management Degree in The School of Real Estate and Construction Economics in DIT. The functions outlined above are delivered in the second year of the course inQuantity Surveying Studies...

Abstract:
<p>This paper investigates Dublin Institute of Technology’s (DIT) ‘webcourses.dit.ie’ created for DIT with Blackboard Learning System software as an effective e-learning tool on a module in the School of Real Estate and Construction Economics in DIT. Webcourses.dit.ie is an e-learning platform providing support and assistance to both lecturers and students as part of their daily teaching and learning experience. Webcourses as it is known in DIT is both a course management system for lecturers and a computer assisted learning and assessment tool for students. Prior to using the system class content was delivered by presenting electronic slides in class and subsequently presentations and related reading material were e-mailed to the students. Assignments including project submission dates were also handed out in class and then e-mailed. Problems existed with this type of course delivery. Some students did not receive course notes as they did not check college e-mail or were not...

Developing autonomic properties for distributed pattern-recognition systems with ASSL
(2011)
Vassev, Emil; Mokhov, Serguei A.
Abstract:
In this paper, we discuss our research towards developing special properties that introduce autonomic behavior in pattern-recognition systems. In our approach we use ASSL (Autonomic System Speci cation Language) to formally develop such properties for DMARF (Distributed Modular Audio Recognition Framework). These properties enhance DMARF with an autonomic middleware that manages the four stages of the framework's pattern-recognition pipeline. DMARF is a biologically inspired system employing pattern recognition, signal processing, and natural language processing helping us process audio, textual, or imagery data needed by a variety of scientific applications, e.g., biometric applications. In that context, the notion go autonomic DMARF (ADMARF) can be employed by autonomous and robotic systems that theoretically re- quire less-to-none human intervention other than data collection for pattern analysis and observing the results. In this article, we explain the ASSL speci cation mo...

Abstract:
NASA is currently exploring swarm-based technologies, targeting the development of prospective exploration missions to explore regions of space, where single large spacecraft would be impractical. Such systems are envisioned to operate autonomously and their success factor depends highly on self-awareness capabilities. This research emphasizes the development of algorithms and prototyping models for self-awareness in swarm-based space-exploration systems. This article tackles the self-initiation and self-healing properties of swarm-based space-exploration systems.
