Finding Information for your Teaching and Research Work in Teaching and Learning
(2005)
Fallon, Helen
Abstract:
While most academics will be aware of the key people and information sources in their specific discipline they may be unaware of the people who are writing about teaching and learning in these disciplines. This chapter is aimed at those involved in exploring the topic of teaching and learning in various disciplines. Librarians will also find it useful in identifying key resources for collection development. The chapter is divided into three sections. Section "Planning a literature search" describes the process of doing a literature search. There are common steps in executing a literature search across disciplines. However, researching the literature of teaching and learning may necessitate a review of a much broader range of literature than that which academics are familiar with in their own discipline. It can be argued that teaching and learning is in itself a discipline. A body of research relating to teaching and learning has grown up and much of the applications and fi...

Comment on a proposed draft protocol for the European Convention on Biomedicine relating to research on the human embryo and fetus
(1998)
Lebech, Mette
Abstract:
Judge Christian Byk renders service to the Steering Committee on Bioethics of the Council of Europe (CDBI) by proposing a draft of the protocal destined to fill a gap in international law on the status of the human embryo. This proposal, promted in a previous issue of the Journal of Medical Ethics deserves nevertheless to be questioned on important points. Is Christian Byk proposing to legalise research on human embryos not only in vitro but also in utero?

The Transatlantic Politics of Productivity and the Origins of Public Funding Support for Social Science Research in Ireland, 1950-1979 (NIRSA) Working Paper Series. No.22
(2004)
Murray, Peter
Abstract:
The channelling of US aid funds into a drive to increase productivity was an important feature of the reconstruction of Western Europe after World War Two. Located within the Organisation for European Economic Co-operation (OEEC), the European Productivity Agency (EPA) played a key role in organising this productivity drive between 1953 and 1962 by constructing a network of national productivity centres. As an OEEC member state, Ireland joined the EPA when it was set up. But it did not take a significant part in the Agency’s activities until 1959 when the government approval for the setting up of an Irish national productivity centre given almost a decade earlier was finally put into effect. At the EPA’s prompting, a National Joint Committee on the Human Sciences and Their Application to Industry (HSC) – probably the first body involved in providing public funding support for the creation of a social science research infrastructure in Ireland - was also set up. This working paper tr...

Firm Growth as a Research Issue
(2004)
Cooney, Thomas M; Malinen, Pasi
Abstract:

A key issue of debate regarding small firms over the past two decades has focused on the ability of small firms to engender growth, particularly fast-growth firms. Many commentators believe that it is a minimal group of enterprises germinating rapidly that provide the real jobs and therefore, that it is these firms which policy makers should be converging upon. But how can small businesses be transformed into fast-growth firms? As Tuck and Hamilton (1993) noted, despite the magnitude of research on small firms, especially regarding growth, researchers are still uncertain why some firms grow and others do not when originating from similar circumstances.

Honneth and recognition as sensitizing concepts for narrative research
(2010)
Fleming, Ted; Finnegan, Fergal
Abstract:
Over a number of years a number of questions in adult education have resisted a search for a more comprehensive answer. These concern, for example, the following. Firstly, adults who have returned to education frequently express their deep satisfaction with the learning experience and inform evaluators that their self-confidence and esteem has been greatly enhanced. What does this enhancement involve? Does this gain in sense of self reflect the increasing importance of credentials in the labour market, a successful adaptation to, often classed and gendered, social norms, a new form of reflexive individualism or provide more evidence of the pervasive use of therapeutic language in society ? The predominance of the theme of ‘self esteem’ in the interviews undertaken as part of an ongoing EU funded study of access and retention of non-traditional students in higher education (RANLHE, 2009) and the search for useful sensitising concepts for this research (SCUTREA, 2009) has forced us to...

In situ shear wave velocity from multichannel analysis of surface waves (MASW) tests at eight Norwegian research sites
(2007)
Long, Michael (Michael M.); Donohue, Shane
Abstract:
The Multichannel Analysis of Surface Waves (MASW) technique, used to determine shear wave velocity (Vs) and hence small strain stiffness (Gmax), has recently generated considerable interest in the geophysics community. This is because of the ease of carrying out the test and analysis of the data. The objective of this work was to assess the repeatability, accuracy and reliability of MASW surface wave measurements for use in engineering studies. Tests were carried out at 8 wellcharacterised Norwegian clay, silt and sand research sites where Vs had already been assessed using independent means. As well as being easy and quick to use MASW gave consistent and repeatable results and for the clay sites the MASW Vs profiles were similar to those obtained from other techniques. Reasonable results were also obtained for the silt and sand sites, with the best result being obtained for the finer silt. This work also confirms that MASW Vs clay profiles are comparable to those obtained by correl...

(Re)placing the new urbanism debates: towards an interdisciplinary research agenda
(2001)
Falconer Al-Hindi, Karen; Till, Karen E.
Abstract:
New Urbanism (NU) is a complex planning paradigm and social movement that has recently become influential in planning, residential development, and government housing circles. To introduce this special issue on NU, we describe the history and important figures of the movement and provide a brief literature review of popular, academic, and professional presses. Because NU is a multifaceted phenomenon, we advocate an interdisciplinary approach to understanding it, one that would promote constructive dialogue and a range of perspectives (and choices) within and between disciplines, professions, and communities. From the vantage point of the academic community (in particular, geography), we argue that various theoretical and methodological perspectives can contribute to a more progressive understanding and implementation of NU practices at various scales. We conclude by outlining three areas for future research: documenting how NU is understood and implemented by urban professionals, an...

A relative impact ranking of political studies in Ireland
(2009)
Benoit, Kenneth; Marsh, Michael
Abstract:
Against a background of the Irish government’s concerns with Key Performance Indicators (KPIs) and the British government’s wishes for a more quantitative Research Assessment Exercise (RAE), our study conducts a relative impact assessment of the study of politics, government, political science, and international relations in Ireland. Impact is measured as citations from the publications of permanent staff in eight Irish politics departments, based on data compiled in April 2008 from two leading academic indexes – ISI’s Web of Science and Scopus – as well as the now popular Google Scholar. We discuss some of the criticisms that naturally arise in a study of this nature. Then, following similar exercises in other disciplines (e.g. economics), we use the impact measures to compare and rank individual scholars as well as departments. We also explore the extent to which the choice of different indexes, and different measures, influences the results that we obtain. While there are differe...

Glutamate receptors in preclinical research on Alzheimer's disease: update on recent advances
(2012)
ONDREJCAK, TOMAS; ROWAN, MICHAEL JOSEPH; HU, NENG WEI
Abstract:
The cognitive and related symptoms of Alzheimer's disease are mainly attributable to synaptic failure. Here we review recent research on how the Alzheimer's disease amyloid ß-protein (Aß) affects glutamate receptors and fast excitatory synaptic transmission and plasticity of that transmission. L-glutamate, the main excitatory neurotransmitter in the brain, has long been implicated in causing NMDA receptor-mediated excitotoxicity leading to neurodegeneration in the late stages of the disease. However there is now extensive evidence that soluble Aß oligomers disrupt synaptic transmission and especially synaptic plasticity via non-excitotoxic glutamatergic mechanisms. New data highlight the relatively selective involvement of certain glutamate receptor subtypes including GluN2B (NR2B) subunit-containing NMDA receptors and mGlu5 receptors. Aß exerts direct and indirect effects on synaptic plasticity-related glutamate receptor signaling and trafficking between different neurona...

Putting Research Evidence to Work: Key Issues for Research Utilisation in Irish Children's Services
(2009)
BUCKLEY, HELEN
Abstract:
peer-reviewed
Following its establishment in July 2007 the Board of the CAAB identified as a key strategic objective the need to strengthen the knowledge base of children’s services. In order to fully meet this objective the Board believes that it is necessary to develop a research capacity that effectively utilises the internal resources of the children’s sector and creates strong links with academic and research organisations nationally and internationally. The Board is very aware of the cost of research, and in particular the cost of the lost opportunity when research is not applied. In developing our research programme the Board believed that it was critical to establish an understanding of the elements necessary to ensure that the research being carried out was the most appropriate and that its findings could be understood and applied across the sector. Our first commission was therefore this study – Putting Research Evidence to Work: Key Issues for Research Utilisation in ...

Servicescapes: A Review of Contemporary Empirical Research
(2007)
Kearney, Treasa; Kennedy, Aileen; Coughlan, Joseph
Abstract:

This paper reviews forty three extant contemporary empirical servicescape studies conducted in the area. The review is limited to articles which focus on the servicescape as defined by Bitner (1992) and Mehrabian and Russell (1974) Pleasure, Arousal and Dominance (PAD) dimensions from environmental psychology. The publication time frame covers the period from 1980 to 2007. The review observes key patterns and trends within the literature. The content was analysed on the basis of issues such as research variables, methodological approaches, sampling methods, research origin and the theoretical frameworks underpinning the research. The analysis highlights gaps and further research directions that could be taken. These research opportunities include the expansion of research sites to address the paucity of European research which has been fragmentary in nature to date while simultaneously reflecting on the research design and implementation issues highlighted.

Does Relevance Matter to Data Mining Research?
(2006)
Tsymbal, Alexey
Abstract:
TCD-CS-2006-24
Data mining (DM) and knowledge discovery are intelligent tools that help to accumulate and process data and make use of it. We review several existing frameworks for DM research that originate from different paradigms. These DM frameworks mainly address various DM algorithms for the different steps of the DM process. Recent research has shown that many real-world problems require integration of several DM algorithms from different paradigms in order to produce a better solution elevating the importance of practice-oriented aspects also in DM research. In this paper we strongly emphasize that DM research should also take into account the relevance of research, not only the rigor of it. Under relevance of research in general, we understand how good this research is in terms of the utility of its results. This chapter motivates development of such a new framework for DM research that would explicitly include the concept of relevance. We introduce the basic idea behin...

Austin Clarke at the Poetry Ireland Library
(2010)
Collins, Lucy
Abstract:
This paper reports on research into Austin Clarke’s personal library which was conducted as part of the UCD Irish Virtual Research Library and Archive (IVRLA) series of demonstrator research projects. Austin Clarke (1896-1974) was a major Irish poet and his personal library forms a large part of the 5,000 volumes that comprise the Poetry Ireland Library which is now housed in UCD Library Special Collections. Clarke’s library offers fascinating insights into the intellectual life of mid-twentieth-century Ireland and into specific textual influences on Clarke’s own work. The research project focused on the issue of cultural production and the influence of international literature and literary criticism on such production. The remit of the IVRLA demonstrator projects was to provide digital research resources and to show how digital repositories could not only provide access to archival research materials but could also present material in new ways and suggest themes for further resear...

Abstract:
This paper reports on the Irish Famine project which continues the work done under the National Famine Commemoration Project (1996-99) and was conducted as part of the UCD Irish Virtual Research Library and Archive (IVRLA) series of demonstrator research projects. The principal investigators on the National Famine Commemoration Project were Mary E. Daly and Cormac Ó Gráda from UCD and David Dickson and David Fitzpatrick from Trinity College Dublin. The remit of the IVRLA demonstrator projects was to provide digital research resources and to show how digital repositories could not only provide access to archival research materials but could also present material in new ways and suggest themes for further research. Hence, the focus of the current IVRLA research project was on collecting the data from the earlier project into a form that can be easily accessible through the IVRLA. The original project covered workhouses in eight Poor Law unions; this project drew from original research...

Ethnography: Visions & Versions
(2009)
Crowley-Henry, Marian
Abstract:
In Chapter 3, Marian Crowley-Henry presents an aspect of the evolving research approach of ethnography and participant observation, delineating the complexities involved in classifying research as ethnographic, given underlying discrepancies in how the approach is applied and the respective philosophy behind its use. The chapter offers an overview of contemporary literature concerning ethnography in social research, from classic ethnography (such as Clifford, 1988; Mead, 2001[1928]) to the placement of all qualitative research as ethnographic (Mason, 2002). The author’s own research (Crowley-Henry, 2007; Crowley- Henry & Weir, 2007, 2009) is considered in order to provide a concrete example of a contemporary ethnographic piece of research. Practical examples of real fieldnotes and extracts from interview transcripts are presented in the chapter. Key guidelines for conducting ethnographic research are shared, meriting the adoption of an ethnographic approach to research, even for...

Abstract:
This paper reports on research into the Dublin in which James Joyce’s short story “The Dead” is set. The research was conducted as part of the UCD Irish Virtual Research Library and Archive (IVRLA) series of demonstrator research projects. The remit of these projects was to provide digital research resources and to show how digital repositories could not only provide access to archival research materials but could also present material in new ways and suggest themes for further research. This project did so by creating a series of podcasts based around the short story and the place and time in which it was set. These podcasts integrated academic analysis, discussion of Joyce resources, performance of significant music from the story, and description of the city space in which Joyce’s story took place. These have all been made available through the IVRLA, as have the full interviews (with transcripts) on which the podcasts are based and an extensive list of resources on Joyce and the...

Rethinking global health research: towards integrative expertise
(2009)
MAC LACHLAN, MALCOLM
Abstract:
The Bamako Call for Action on Research for Health stresses the importance of inter-disciplinary, inter-ministerial and inter-sectoral working. This challenges much of our current research and postgraduate research training in health, which mostly seeks to produce narrowly focused content specialists. We now need to compliment this type of research and research training, by offering alternative pathways that seek to create expertise, not only in specific narrow content areas, but also in the process and context of research, as well as in the interaction of these different facets of knowledge. Such an approach, developing 'integrative expertise', could greatly facilitate better research utilisation, helping policy makers and practitioners work through more evidence-based practice and across traditional research boundaries.

Purpose – The purpose of this paper it to outline current resource-sharing initiatives in Irish academic libraries that support increased research activity in line with national policy. This paper aims to point to the challenges and opportunities such initiatives present. Design/methodology/approach – The approach takes the form of a review paper based on practice. Findings – It has been suggested that the greatest obstacle to finding library research is that librarians do not publish their research. As financial constraints impact on all publicly funded organisations it is not unreasonable to suggest that decision making will become more dependent on research evidence than previously. Economies of scale cannot justify the development of a research body such as the Research Information Network (RIN) in the UK and, while its output is relevant to higher education in Ireland, it is important to remember that its findings must be adapted and scaled to the Irish environment, and that pa...

A review of corporate governance research : an Irish perspective
(2010)
Brennan, Niamh
Abstract:
This chapter provides an overview of corporate governance, with particular emphasis on governance research with an Irish perspective. Various definitions of corporate governance are examined, followed by a summary of the mechanisms of governance, both internal and external. The various theories applied in prior governance research are discussed. This is followed by a summary of prior empirical and other governance research. For reasons of space, only prior research with an Irish angle is reviewed. This is a fraction of the prior research on governance internationally, and governance researchers are encouraged to read more widely to obtain a more comprehensive view of prior governance research. The chapter concludes with some suggestions for further research.

Abstract:
This paper reports on the Irish Builder and Engineer research project which was conducted as part of the UCD Irish Virtual Research Library and Archive (IVRLA) series of demonstrator research projects. The remit of these projects was to provide digital research resources and to show how digital repositories could not only provide access to archival research materials but could also present material in new ways and suggest themes for further research. The Irish Builder and Engineer, which commenced publication in 1859 and survived under various titles until 1979, is a key resource in understanding the development of the Irish building and engineering trades. This project, which is the first phase of a long-term project, created a complete contents catalogue of the journal from 1890 to 1914, thus facilitating academic investigation into the history of engineering, construction and sanitary science in Ireland as well as into the history and content of The Irish Builder and Engineer its...

Abstract:
This paper reports on the material culture of the Mendicant Orders in Ireland pre-1829 project which was conducted as part of the UCD Irish Virtual Research Library and Archive (IVRLA) series of demonstrator research projects. The project, undertaken from July to December 2009, continues the work done under a major project conducted from 2004 to 2008 and funded by the Irish Research Council for the Humanities and Social Sciences (IRCHSS). The original project, whose main objective was to create a full inventory of portable objects pre-dating catholic emancipation in the possession of the mendicant orders in Ireland, identified 422 such liturgical objects. The remit of the IVRLA demonstrator projects was to provide digital research resources and to show how digital repositories could not only provide access to archival research materials but could also present material in new ways and suggest themes for further research. Hence, the focus of the current IVRLA research project was on c...
