Abstract:
Background: The nuclear factor kappa-B (NF-κB) is a major transcription factor responsible for the production of numerous inflammatory mediators, including the tumor necrosis factor (TNFα), which has a lethal association with cancer’s onset. The silver nanoparticles (AgNPs) are widely used in cancer treatment and several other biomedical applications. Objective: The study aimed to determine the effects of silver citrate nanoparticles (AgNPs-CIT) on NF-κB activation together with TNFα mRNA/protein expressions in the phorbol myristate acetate (PMA)-stimulated MCF-7 human breast cancer cell-lines. Methods: The AgNPs-CIT were synthesized by the reduction method, and the prepared AgNPs-CIT were characterized for their shape, absorption in UV-VIS electromagnetic radiations, size distribution, ζ-potential, and antioxidant activity. The MCF-7 cell-lines were pretreated with AgNPs-CIT and stimulated with PMA. The TNFα mRNA expressions were determined by real-time PCR, whereas the protein pro...

Abstract:
Bridge21 is an innovative approach to learning for secondary education that is team and project based and that takes place in a technology mediated environment. Bridge21 was conceptualised and structured initially as an outreach intervention whereby participants attended workshops at a dedicated learning space within a third-level institution leading to refinement of a particular model of technology-mediated group-based learning. This paper reports on the current expansion of the Bridge21 project to mainstream schools at a time of proposed Government led reforms for lower secondary education in Ireland. Data were drawn from case studies with two participant schools over the course of academic year 11/12. Student experiences and views were captured by means of questionnaires which amongst other items asked students to create a visual depiction of their Bridge 21 experiences. Teacher experiences and views were gleaned by means of focus group interviews. Overall students reported posit...

Abstract:
In this study, nutrients release/adsorption from/by raw poultry manure-derived biochar produced at a pyrolysis temperature of 600 ?C (RPM-B) was assessed under static and dynamic conditions. Batch sequential leaching experiments of RPM-B for a total contact time of 10 days showed that both phosphorus and potassium were slowly released but with higher amounts compared to various other animal- and lignocellulosic-derived biochars. The cumulated released P and K amounts were assessed to 93.6 and 17.1 mg g-1, which represent about 95% and 43% of their original contents in the RPM-B, respectively. The column combined leaching/adsorption experiments showed that amending an alkaline sandy agricultural soil with two doses of RPM-B (at 5% and 8% w:w) resulted in an efficient retention of NO3-N and NH4-N, and on the contrary, important leached amounts of PO4-P, K+, Mg2+, and Ca2+ but with relatively slow kinetic release rates for a long period. Even after 40 days of dynamic leaching, these l...

Early Warning Signs of a Mental Health Tsunami: A Coordinated Response to Gather Initial Data Insights From Multiple Digital Services Providers
(2021)
Richards, Derek
Abstract:
Introduction: The immediate impact of coronavirus 2019 (COVID-19) on morbidity and mortality has raised the need for accurate and real-time data monitoring and communication. The aim of this study is to document the initial observations from multiple digital services providers during the COVID-19 crisis, especially those related to mental health and well-being. Methods: We used email and social media to announce an urgent call for support. Digital mental health services providers (N = 46), financial services providers (N = 4), and other relevant digital data source providers (N = 3) responded with quantitative and/or qualitative data insights. People with lived experience of distress, as service users/consumers, and carers are included as co-authors. Results: This study provides proof-of-concept of the viability for researchers and private companies to work collaboratively toward a common good. Digital services providers reported a diverse range of mental health concerns. A recurrin...

Abstract:
Background: In response to issues with timely access and high non-attendance rates for Emergency Department (ED) physiotherapy, a telephone assessment and advice service was evaluated as part of a quality improvement project. This telehealth option requires minimal resources, with the added benefit of allowing the healthcare professional streamline care. A primary aim was to investigate whether this service model can reduce wait times and non-attendance rates, compared to usual care. A secondary aim was to evaluate service user acceptability. Methods: This was a single-site quality improvement cohort study that compares data on wait time to first physiotherapy contact, non-attendance rates and participant satisfaction between patients that opted for a service based on initial telephone assessment and advice, versus routine face-to-face appointments. 116 patients were referred for ED physiotherapy over the 3-month pilot at the ED and out-patient physiotherapy department, XMercy Unive...

Abstract:
The conchocelis life cycle stage of P. dioica represents an unexplored source of bioactive compounds. The aim of this study was to generate and characterise, for the first time, hydrolysates of conchocelis using a specific combination of proteases (Prolyve® and Flavourzyme®). Hydrolysate molecular mass distribution and free amino acid contents were assessed, and the antioxidant activity was determined using a range of in vitro assays. The protein content and the total amino acid profiles of conchocelis were also studied. Conchocelis contained ~25% of protein (dry weight basis) and had a complete profile of essential amino acids. Direct sequential enzymatic treatment modified the profile of the generated compounds, increasing the amount of low molecular weight peptides (<1 kDa). There was a significant improvement in the antioxidant activity of the hydrolysates compared with the control (up to 2.5-fold), indicating their potential as a novel source of antioxidant ingredients.

Abstract:
The potential impact of COVID-19 restrictions on worker well-being is currently unknown. In this study we examine 15 well-being outcomes collected from 621 full-time workers assessed before (November, 2019 - February, 2020) and during (May-June, 2020) the COVID-19 pandemic. Fixed effects analyses are used to investigate how the COVID-19 restrictions and involuntary homeworking affect well-being and job performance. The majority of worker well-being measures are not adversely affected. Homeworkers feel more engaged and autonomous, experience fewer negative emotions and feel more connected to their organisations. However, these improvements come at the expense of reduced homelife satisfaction and job performance.

A Benchmark for 3D Reconstruction from Aerial Imagery in an Urban Environment
(2021)
Smolic, Aljosa
Abstract:
This paper presents a novel benchmark to evaluate 3D reconstruction methods using aerial images in a large- scale urban scenario. In particular, it presents an evaluation of open-source state-of-the-art pipelines for image-based 3D reconstruction including, for the first time, an analysis per urban object category. Therefore, the standard evaluation presented in generalist image-based reconstruction benchmarks is extended and adapted to the city. Furthermore, our benchmark uses the densest annotated LiDAR point cloud available at city scale as ground truth and the imagery captured alongside. Additionally, an online evaluation server will be made available to the community.

Abstract:
Historical precipitation records are fundamental for the management of water resources, yet rainfall observations typically span 100–15 0 years at most, with considerable uncertainties surrounding earlier records. Here, we analyse some of the longest a vailabl e precipitation records globally, for England and Wales, Scotland and Ireland. To assess the credibility of these records and extend them further back in time, we statistically reconstruct (using independent predictors) monthly precipitation series representing these regions for the period 1748–2000. By applying the Standardized Precipi- tation Index at 12-month accumulations (SPI-12) to the observed and our reconstructed series we re-evaluate historical meteorological droughts. We find strong agreement between observed and reconstructed drought chronol- ogies in post-1870 records, but divergence in e arlier series due to biases in early precipitation observations. Hence, the 1800s decade was less drought prone in our reconstr...

Abstract:
Northward ocean heat transport at 268N in the Atlantic Ocean has been measured since 2004. The ocean heat transport is large—approximately 1.25 PW, and on interannual time scales it exhibits surprisingly large temporal variability. There has been a long-term reduction in ocean heat transport of 0.17 PW from 1.32 PW before 2009 to 1.15 PW after 2009 (2009–16) on an annual average basis associated with a 2.5-Sv (1 Sv [ 106 m3 s 21 ) drop in the Atlantic meridional overturning circulation (AMOC). The reduction in the AMOC has cooled and freshened the upper ocean north of 268N over an area following the offshore edge of the Gulf Stream/North Atlantic Current from the Bahamas to Iceland. Cooling peaks south of Iceland where surface temperatures are as much as 28C cooler in 2016 than they were in 2008. Heat uptake by the atmosphere appears to have been affected particularly along the path of the North Atlantic Current. For the reduction in ocean heat transport, changes in ocean heat conte...

Abstract:
This article contributes to scholarship on participatory mixed methods research while and presents empirical evidence relating to the needs of Roma. The European Commission against Racism and Intolerance (2005) acknowledged the specific nature of racism towards Roma as being persistent both historically and geographically; permanent and not decreasing; as systematic, accepted by virtually all the community; and often accompanied by acts of violence [2012, National Roma Integration Strategies: a first step in the implementation of the EU Framework. COM (2012) 226, 21 May 2012, http://ec. europa.eu/justice/discrimination/roma/eu-framework/index_en.htm]. This has repercussions for establishing trust in the research relationship. Thus, such research presents a methodological challenge which on this occasion could not have been completed without the active involvement of community researchers at every stage of the research process. Its aim was to assess the needs of Roma in a particular ...

Abstract:
OBJECTIVES: Eosinophilic esophagitis (EoE), a chronic food allergic disease, lacks sensitive and specific peripheral biomarkers. We hypothesized that levels of EoE-related biomarkers captured using a 1-hour minimally invasive Esophageal String Test (EST) would correlate with mucosal eosinophil counts and tissue concentrations of these same biomarkers. We aimed to determine whether a 1-hour EST accurately distinguishes active from inactive EoE or a normal esophagus. METHODS: In a prospective, multisite study, children and adults (ages 7–55 years) undergoing a clinically indicated esophagogastroduodenoscopy performed an EST with an esophageal dwell time of 1 hour. Subjects were divided into 3 groups: active EoE, inactive EoE, and normal esophageal mucosa. Eosinophil-associated protein levels were compared between EST effluents and esophageal biopsy extracts. Abstract:
In this article, we study spillovers in political trust between the national parliaments of 15 Member States and the European Commission, the European Parliament and the European Central Bank in the period 2000–2015. We show that in most instances spillovers between the national parliaments and the European Commission and the European Parliament are bidirectional, asymmetric, and change over time and place. A corollary of these findings is that simultaneously achieving high level of trust in institutions at different levels of governance may require a deeper understanding of the complex inter-institutional relationships that exist in the EU multilevel governance setting.

Abstract:
Selective Laser Melting (SLM) facilitates the formation of complex, stochastic or non-stochastic, metallic cellular structures. There is a high level of interest in these structures recently, particularly due to their high strength to weight ratios and osteoconductive properties. While the ability to in-situ monitor the SLM process is of key importance for future quality control methods. In this work lattice structures were fabricated, using the single exposure scanning strategy, on a Renishaw 500M SLM machine. The build process was also monitored using a co-axial in-situ process monitoring system. It was found that by increasing the energy input, through increasing the laser power and/or exposure time, the lattice strut diameters, within the 1.5 mm diamond unit cells, increased from 119 to 293 μm, resulting in the major pore diameter decreasing from 1106 to 932 μm. The effect of systematically altering the laser beam spot size on the cellular structures was also evaluated. It was o...

Mid-infrared spectroscopy as an alternative to laboratory extraction for the determination of lime requirement in tillage soils
(2021)

Abstract:
Lime is a crucial soil conditioner to bring agricultural soils to optimum pH values for nutrient availability. Lime recommendations are typically determined in laboratory extractions, the most common being the “Shoemaker- McLean and Pratt” (SMP) buffer method, that requires carcinogenic reagents soon to be abolished under the EU legislation. As an alternative to wet chemistry, mid-infrared (MIR) spectroscopy has shown to be a cost-and time effective method at predicting soil properties. The capability and feasibility of diffuse reflectance infrared spectroscopy (DRIFTS) to predict lime requirement (LR) in tillage fields is examined. Samples from 41 cereal tillage fields (n = 655) are used to build a calibration for DRIFTS using partial least squares regression (PLSR). The samples were split into calibration set (31 fields, n=495) and validation set (10 fields, n= 160). After preprocessing with trim, smoothing and standard normal variate, a calibration model using 6 latent variables,...

Abstract:
The current study presents a rapid review of the psychometric features of the standard Montreal Cognitive Assessment (MoCA), and the proposal for a modified version of the test, informed by the methodology of the Boston Process Approach to neuropsychological assessment. In order to aid the process of identification of the primary underlying neurocognitive mechanism responsible for defective test performance, the MoCA-Process-Based Approach (MoCA-PA) adds complementary or satellite test conditions in some of its subtests, includes "new" qualitative indices to capture the cognitive processes involved in each cognitive task, and incorporates new qualitative classifications of error subtypes. It provides concurrent assessment of multiple cognitive processes within each task, without significantly increasing administration time or placing significant additional burden upon the respondent. We present preliminary results obtained from an initial sample of 45 community-dwelling ol...

Abstract:
Stomatal conductance (gs) in terrestrial vegetation regulates the uptake of atmospheric carbon dioxide for photosynthesis and water loss through transpiration, closely linking the biosphere and atmosphere and influencing climate. Yet, the range and pattern of gs in plants from natural ecosystems across broad geographic, climatic, and taxonomic ranges remains poorly quantified. Furthermore, attempts to characterize gs on such scales have predominantly relied upon meta-analyses compiling data from many different studies. This approach may be inherently problematic as it combines data collected using unstandardized protocols, sometimes over decadal time spans, and from different habitat groups. Using a standardized protocol, we measured leaflevel gs using porometry in 218 C3 woody angiosperm species in natural ecosystems representing seven bioclimatic zones. The resulting dataset of 4273 gs measurements, which we call STraits (Stomatal Traits), was used to determine patterns in maximum...

3D modelling of concrete tunnel segmental joints and the development of a new bolt-spring model
(2021)

Abstract:
In a segmental metro tunnel, it is widely observed that cracks, water leakage and other structural defects usually appear at segmental joint section of a smaller stiffness than main tunnel segment section. In this study, a 3D finite element analysis was conducted to simulate a typical concrete segmental joint explicitly using 3D continuum elements, and the performance of 3D continuum model was validated against laboratory tests available in literature. Since such continuum model may cost excessive computational time when a large-scale tunnel structure is analysed, a new bolt-spring model was developed to simplify the structural features of concrete segmental joint. In the bolt-spring model, the interaction between bolt and segment was modelled by a set of normal springs and shear springs: the stiffness of the normal springs is mainly determined by the bolt itself, whilst the shear springs take account of bolt-segment friction, interaction and shear resistance of the bolt. In the mea...

Abstract:
Evapotranspiration integrates energy and mass transfer between the Earth's surface and atmosphere and is the most active mechanism linking the atmosphere, hydrosphsophere, lithosphere and biosphere. This study focuses on the fine resolution modeling and projection of spatially distributed potential evapotranspiration on the large catchment scale as response to climate change. Six potential evapotranspiration designed algorithms, systematically selected based on a structured criteria and data availability, have been applied and then validated to long-term mean monthly data for the Shannon River catchment with a 50 m2 cell size. The best validated algorithm was therefore applied to evaluate the possible effect of future climate change on potential evapotranspiration rates. Spatially distributed potential evapotranspiration projections have been modeled based on climate change projections from multi-GCM ensembles for three future time intervals (2020, 2050 and 2080) using a range ...

Using cluster analysis to explore the engagement with a flipped classroom of native and non-native english-speaking management students
(2020)
Walsh, John N.; Rísquez, Angélica
Abstract:
Flipped classrooms are becoming increasingly popular, particularly when teaching non-native speaking students. Existing research has largely focused on examining academic performance and students’ perceptions of the learning process. This exploratory study uses log-file data to identify hidden patterns of student online behaviour in a flipped classroom environment for a cohort of students, with special attention to their command of the home language of the institution. Using cluster analysis, categories were identified regarding when and how often online flipped lessons were accessed: (i) before class, (ii) after class and before a weekly exam, and (iii) after the weekly exam but before an assignment. Gender and the average number of minutes the lessons were accessed before each time period were also considered. Findings indicated that there was sustained access to flipped materials throughout the semester for all students. In addition to accessing online lessons prior to class, stu...

Locative reverb: Artistic practice, sound technology, and the grammatization of the listener in the city
(2021)
Putnam, El
Abstract:
There are various ways that artists use technology in exploring the relation of sound to the urban environment, which has different impacts on the listener in relation to place. The rising prominence of these works is connected to a broader sonic turn in urban studies and art, underscoring a rising emphasis on the influence of sound on multisensory experience. Using Bernard Stiegler’s consideration of technology as pharmakon (or the condition of duality in which something is both poison and cure, bringing both benefit and harm), and his definition of technological grammatization, how artistic use of technology mediates the relationship of the urban environment to the listener through sound is studied through a pharmacological approach in order to nuance the possibilities of artistic critical engagement, emphasising how this can include unintended consequences of re-enforcing certain listener behaviours. At the same time, considerations of how artistic repurposing of listening techno...

Computing optimal (R,s,S) policy parameters by a hybrid of branch-and-bound and stochastic dynamic programming

Abstract:
A well-known control policy in stochastic inventory control is the policy, in which inventory is raised to an order-up-to-level S at a review instant R whenever it falls below reorder-level s. To date, little or no work has been devoted to developing approaches for computing policy parameters. In this work, we introduce a hybrid approach that exploits tree search to compute optimal replenishment cycles, and stochastic dynamic programming to compute levels for a given cycle. Up to 99.8% of the search tree is pruned by a branch-and-bound technique with bounds generated by dynamic programming. A numerical study shows that the method can solve instances of realistic size in a reasonable time.

Abstract:
In this paper we consider the maximization of the throughput of a single large antenna, for two possible array configurations: focal plane imaging arrays and aperture plane phased arrays. We discuss trade-offs between the two types of array in terms of field of view, sampling efficiency and time to map, a source. We also discuss limits on the number of feed elements in an imaging array imposed by the deterioration in aperture efficiency off-axis.

Abstract:
Introduction and aims: To provide an assessment of outcomes in a cohort of opioid-dependent patients post-detoxification. Design and methods: This study employed an observational longitudinal cohort design. Patients who completed detoxification in the three major Drug Dependency Units in Ireland during a 14-month period were included in the study (n?=?143). Patients opting for one of the three pathways post-detoxification (inpatient aftercare, outpatient aftercare or no formal aftercare) were assessed in the final week of detoxification and followed up after 3, 6 and 9?months. The primary outcome was abstinence following detoxification. Results: A Cox (adjusted) model indicated participants who opted for outpatient aftercare treatment lapsed/relapsed at a rate of 52% higher than the inpatient aftercare group (hazard ratio?=?1.52, 95% confidence interval 0.75-3.08, P?=?0.24). Moreover, time to lapse/relapse was considerably shorter for the no formal aftercare group (hazard ratio?=?7....
