Extended model of the photoinitiation mechanisms in photopolymer materials
(2009)
Liu, Shui; Gleeson, M. R.; Sabol, Dušan; Sheridan, John T.
Abstract:
In order to further improve photopolymer materials for applications such as data storage, a deeper understanding of the photochemical mechanisms which are present during the formation of holographic gratings has become ever more crucial. This is especially true of the photoinitiation processes, since holographic data storage requires multiple sequential short exposures. Previously, models describing the temporal variation in the photosensitizer (dye)concentration as a function of exposure have been presented and applied to two different types of photosensitizer, i.e., Methylene Blue and Erythrosine B, in a polyvinyl alcohol/acrylamide based photopolymer. These models include the effects of photosensitizer recovery and bleaching under certain limiting conditions. In this paper, based on a detailed study of the photochemical reactions, the previous models are further developed to more physically represent these effects. This enables a more accurate description of the time varying dy...

Abstract:
<p>Within the field of higher education, there are situations where the learner is not well served in a classroom setting. Problematic issues such as scheduling, critical mass, time, pace and location have the potential to be counterbalanced by e-learning. Within this, the asynchronous nature of today’s online learning environments and computer conferencing tools have popularly been claimed to offer tremendous benefits for learners who are willing to take responsibility for their own learning, to progress at their own pace, and interact with their online teacher to get immediate feedback on their learning and progress. Indeed, increasingly, educators today are very keen to exploit some of these new technologies for the benefit of their learners. It is argued in this paper that there is a need to address the practice and research of asynchronous computer mediated conferencing. As conferencing tools become an increasingly common feature in students’ experience, teachers need to ...

Abstract:
<p>The notions of Hopfian and co-Hopfian groups have been of interest for some time. In this present work we exploit some unpublished ideas of Corner to answer questions relating to such groups. In particular, we extend an answer given by Corner to a problem of Beaumont and Pierce and show how the properties may be lifted from subgroups to the whole group in certain situations.</p>

The Culture of Gamework
(2011)
Kerr, Aphra
Abstract:
While the digital games industry has become increasingly marketised and professionalized in its forty years of commercial existence, at the same time it has maintained some of its DIY roots and is somewhat ahead of other media industries in its attempts to facilitate and appropriate amateur productions. The increasingly globalised nature of digital game development gives rise to challenges and tensions related to managing development projects across transnational networks of companies, managing inputs of amateur producers and managing communities of players. The digital game industry is used today in media and communication studies both as an example of "co-creative culture" (Jenkins, 2006; Raessens, 2005) and of "precarious labour" (Kline, Dyer-Witheford, & De Peuter, 2003; Kücklich, 2005; Postigo, 2003 and 2007; Terranova, 2004). These concepts are not necessarily exclusive and both can be usefully employed to understand work in game production networks in ...

Collaborative refinement of emergency plans through public engagement
(2011)

Abstract:
Emergency plans are fundamental for the speedy and effective response in disaster situations. Plans are often constructed by teams of experts, who apply their expertise to define response procedures, but lack part of location-specific knowledge that can be very relevant to make decisions during responses. Such knowledge is, however, in the minds of people who use those spaces every day, but are not involved in the planning processes. In this paper, we advocate for citizens' involvement in emergency plan elaboration via Public Participation, a mechanism long time used in other areas of egovernment. We define the steps of a collaborative process for the elicitation of citizen's knowledge via Public Participation. A summary of the results of an initial case study is used to demonstrate the feasibility of our proposal for improving emergency plans

A Review of Global Climate Projections and Likely Scenarios for Ireland
(2009)
Fealy, Rowan
Abstract:
This chapter is a review of national and regional climate scenarios for Ireland within the broader context of the likely global impacts of climate change. Projected seasonal changes in two key meteorological variables – temperature and precipitation – are outlined for three 30-year future time periods: the 2020s, 2050s and 2080s. Changes in extremes of temperature and precipitation are also discussed. This chapter provides the basis for the discussion of the physical impacts of climate change on inland waterways and the coastal environment in Chapter 4.

Harriet Martineau and Ireland
(2009)
Conway, Brian; Hill, Michael R.
Abstract:
The Victorian sociologist-novelist Harriet Martineau visited Ireland on two different occasions, first in 1832 and again, twenty years later, in 1852, just six years after the Great Famine of 1846, when the country was still very much visibly affected by that event. Her latter journey covered some 1,200 miles and encompassed all four provinces that make up the island of Ireland, north and south. Martineau was not the first foreign visitor to nineteenth century Ireland, of course, but she provided one of the few genuinely sociological interpretations during this time period. This chapter, then, examines Martineau's Irish writings and her contribution to our sociological understanding of nineteenth-century Ireland.

The Likely Physical Impacts of Future Climate Change on Inland Waterways and the Coastal Environment in Ireland
(2009)
Fealy, Rowan; Murphy, Conor
Abstract:
While increasing temperatures in Ireland are projected to occur in all seasons and time periods, it is likely that projected changes in the seasonal and spatial distribution of rain will present a much greater challenge, particularly during the summer months in the south and east of the country. Reductions in summer precipitation, leading to significant decreases in water availability and quality will result in increased competition between municipal, agricultural, and commercial interests, including tourism. Decreases in summer precipitation, together with increased evaporative losses are also likely to affect terrestrial ecosystems, particularly water dependant systems such as turloughs and fens. Changes in seasonal water levels and the occurrence of extreme high and low flow events will directly impact on river navigability, cultural heritage, and the plant and animal communities of the riparian zone. Inland waterways also provide an important resource for potable water extractio...

Thickness variation of self-processing acrylamide-based photopolymer and reflection holography
(2001)
O'Neill, Feidhlim T.; Lawrence, Justin R.; Sheridan, John T.
Abstract:
There are many types of holographic recording material. The acrylamide-based recording material examined here has one significant advantage: it is self-processing. This simplifies the recording process and enables holographic interferometry to be carried out without the need for complex realignment procedures. However, the effect that the polymerization process has on the grating thickness must be examined. This question is fundamental to the material’s use in holographic optical elements, as thickness variations affect the replay conditions of the produced elements. This paper presents a study of this thickness variation and reports for the first time the production of reflection holographic gratings in this material.

Abstract:
A growing body of research has been exploring the use of control mechanisms to address the privacy concerns raised by location-tracking technology. We report on a qualitative study of two family groups who used a custom-built tracking application for an extended period of time. Akin to sociological breaching experiments, the study focuses on the interferences between location tracking and relationship management. We analyze the tensions that can arise between affordances of the technology and uses that the contracts between family members legitimize. We describe how, by fostering misperceptions and ‘nudging’ behaviors, location-tracking technology can generate anxieties and conflicts even in close relationships. We discuss their vulnerability to the overreaching effects of tracking, against which the use of mechanisms such as location-sharing preferences and feedback may not be socially viable.

Spin scattering and spin-polarized hybrid interface states at a metal-organic interface
(2011)
BAADJI, NADJIB; SANVITO, STEFANO
Abstract:
Spin scattering at the interface formed between metallic Fe and Cu-phthalocyanine molecules is investigated by spin-polarized scanning tunneling spectroscopy and spin-resolved photoemission. The results are interpreted using first-principles electronic structure theory. The combination of experimental and theoretical techniques allows us to shed light on the role of hybrid interface states for the spin scattering. We show that Cu-phthalocyanine acts, via hybrid interface states, as a local spin filter up to room temperature both below and above the Fermi energy, E(F). At the same time, the molecule behaves as a featureless scattering barrier in a region of about 1 eV around E(F). Similar properties are found for both single molecules and self-assembled molecular layers, so that the acquired microscopic knowledge can be transferred to operating devices.

Efficient storage and decoding of SURF feature points
(2012)
McGuinness, Kevin; McCusker, Kealan; O'Hare, Neil; O'Connor, Noel E.
Abstract:
Practical use of SURF feature points in large-scale indexing and retrieval engines requires an efficient means for storing and decoding these features. This paper investigates several methods for compression and storage of SURF feature points, considering both storage consumption and disk-read efficiency. We compare each scheme with a baseline plain-text encoding scheme as used by many existing SURF implementations. Our final proposed scheme significantly reduces both the time required to load and decode feature points, and the space required to store them on disk.

Abstract:
The software development team is a key factor in software projects, however, achieving and maintaining positive team dynamics in software development project especially when the software companies have fewer resources in term of people, money and time is a remarkable challenge. This paper explores the dynamics of software development teams (structure, process, communication, learning and sharing) and its impact on Software Process Improvement (SPI) in very small software organization, in order to understand the impact between these two variables. We undertook a series of interviews and focus groups with very small software companies and our results show that very small companies have a high level of team dynamics although their SPI initiatives are conducted on a small scale and in an informal and indirect manner. The results also indicated that this situation occurs due to the working and social relationship, willingness to share, having a good interpersonal skill and work closely e...

Local Clusters and Global Entrepreneurship: The significance of spatial and relational propinquity in new firm formation
(2010)
Giblin, Majella
Abstract:
This paper explores the significance of local proximity for new firm formation in particular industries. Within the literature, entrepreneurs are viewed as critical to industrial cluster formation and development in regions, while at the same time clusters are assumed to foster entrepreneurship by providing established linkages and access to knowledge flows. Entrepreneurship is therefore modelled as an inherently local process within industrial clusters. However, given that firms, particularly in high-tech sectors, are often globally oriented the significance of local proximity both geographically and relationally is ambiguous. Therefore, the research questions addressed in this paper are; How "local" is new firm formation in an industrial cluster in terms of the networks created to establish and develop a globally-oriented firm and the influence of the cluster in the formation of such a firm? And how significant, if it all, is being located in a cluster for a globally-ori...

Network Enabled Capabilities and Competitive Technology Clusters in Ireland
(2010)
Das, Satyasiba
Abstract:
The Network approach is a useful heuristic tool that enables us to focus on the network structure, inter-linkages between actors and help determining how the networks change over time. The present study used the network approach to understand the degree to which technology based clusters (TBCs); industries, firms and products are enmeshed and linked in a network. The study indicates the important features and structure of high-tech industrial organisation in Ireland. Various network-based measures of connectivity and embeddedness of these competitive technology clusters in the network are used to determine the behaviour, and the range of opportunities, influence, and power that the industries and TBCs have. The study also examines whether capabilities are transferrable across these TBCs and industries in an evolutionary manner through technological convergence. Demographics of 2280 high-tech firms that comprise 8 competitive technology based clusters in Ireland are used to construct...

Abstract:
We use Malliavin calculus and the Clark-Ocone formula to derive the hedging strategy of an arithmetic Asian Call option in general terms. Furthermore we derive an expression for the density of the integral over time of a geometric Brownian motion, which allows us to express hedging strategy and price of the Asian option as an analytic expression. Numerical computations which are based on this expression are provided.

Recent progress in data processing, communications and electronics miniaturization is now enabling the development of low-cost wireless sensor networks (WSN), which consist of spatially distributed autonomous sensor modules that collaborate to monitor real-time environmental conditions unobtrusively and with appropriate levels of spatial and temporal granularity. Recent and future applications of this technology range from preventative maintenance and quality control to environmental modelling and failure analysis. In order to fabricate these low-cost, low-power reliable monitoring platforms, it is necessary to improve the level of sensor integration available today. This paper outlines the microfabrication and characterization results of a multifunctional multisensor unit....

The nucleoid-associated protein HU controls three regulons that coordinate virulence, response to stress and general physiology in Salmonella enterica serovar Typhimurium
(2011)
DORMAN, CHARLES JAMES; HINTON, JAY
Abstract:
The role of the HU nucleoid-associated proteins in gene regulation was examined in Salmonella enterica serovar Typhimurium. The dimeric HU protein consists of different combinations of its α and β subunits. Transcriptomic analysis was performed with cultures growing at 37°C at 1, 4 and 6 hours post-inoculation with mutants that lack combinations of HU α and HU β. Distinct but overlapping patterns of gene expression were detected at each time point for each of the three mutants, revealing not one but three regulons of genes controlled by the HU proteins. Mutations in the hup genes altered the expression of regulatory and structural genes in both the SPI1 and the SPI2 pathogenicity islands. The hupA hupB double mutant was defective in invasion of epithelial cell lines and in its ability to survive in macrophages. The double mutant also had defective swarming activity and a competitive fitness disadvantage compared to the wild type. In contrast, inactivation of just the hupB gene resul...

Oscillatory Entrainment of Thalamic Neurons by Theta Rhythm in Freely-Moving Rats.
(2011)
REILLY, RICHARD; O'MARA, SHANE MICHAEL
Abstract:
The anterior thalamic nuclei are assumed to support episodic memory with anterior thalamic dysfunction a core feature of diencephalic amnesia. To date, the electrophysiological characterization of this region in behaving rodents has been restricted to the anterodorsal nucleus. Here we compared single-unit spikes with population activity in the anteroventral nucleus (AV) of freely moving rats during foraging and during naturally occurring sleep. We identified AV units that synchronize their bursting activity in the 6–11 Hz range. We show for the first time in freely moving rats that a subgroup of AV neurons is strongly entrained by theta oscillations. This feature together with their firing properties and spike shape suggests they be classified as “theta” units. To prove the selectivity of AV theta cells for theta rhythm, we compared the relation of spiking rhythmicity to local field potentials during theta and non-theta periods. The most distinguishable non-theta oscillations in rod...

Abstract:
Software Process Improvement (SPI) ‘best practice’ models such as ISO 9000 and the Capability Maturity Model Integrated (CMMI) have been developed to assist software development organisations by harnessing their experience and providing them with support so that they can produce software products on time, within budget and to a high level of quality. However there is increasing evidence that these models are not being adopted by Small to Medium sized Enterprises (SME) and primarily remain the remit of large organisations. This paper presents the results of a Grounded Theory study into why Irish SME software product companies are not using these SPI models. The key inhibiting factor found was the issue of cost. We discuss the findings in relation to cost of process and the factors affecting it, including bureaucracy, documentation, communication, tacit knowledge and organisational creativity and flexibility, and the associated impact on the adoption of SPI best practice models.

Reflective semiconductor optical amplifier pulse propagation model
(2012)
Connelly, Michael J.
Abstract:
A simple time-domain model for optical pulse propagation in a reflective semiconductor optical amplifier (RSOA) is described. The RSOA saturation energy, effective carrier lifetime and spectral hole-burning parameters used in the model are determined using experimental measurements of the input and output pulse temporal profiles to the RSOA and least mean-square fitting. The model accurately predicts the propagation of 39.6 ps pulsewidth variable energy pulses in the RSOA. The model is used to predict the RSOA gain dynamics, spatial dependence of the pulse shape and dynamic chirp

Abstract:
Context: The loose coupling of services and Service-Based Applications (SBAs) have made them the ideal platform for context-based run-time adaptation. There has been a lot of research into implementation techniques for adapting SBAs, without much effort focused on the software process required to guide the adaptation. Objective: This paper aims to bridge that gap by providing an empirically grounded software process model that can be used by software practitioners who want to build adaptable SBAs. The process model will focus only on the adaptation specific issues. Method: The process model presented in this paper is based on data collected through interviews with 10 practitioners occupying various roles within eight different companies. The data was analyzed using qualitative data analysis techniques. We used the output to develop a set of activities, tasks, stakeholders and artifacts that were used to construct the process model. Results: The outcome of the data analysis process w...

Fluid source code views for just in-time comprehension
(2012)

Abstract:
The use of modern programming paradigms and technologies, such as object orientation, inheritance, polymorphism and aspect orientation, facilitate a number of important software engineeringbenefits. Concerns can be better separated, software is more modular and reusable, and evolution is a simpler and less invasive process. However these advances in programming technology also negatively impact the ability of software engineers to read, navigate and comprehend source code. The definition and execution flow of program operations is more fragmented and relationships between software units are often implicit and difficult to determine. In this paper we propose and present some initial work on a new direction in source code document presentation called fluid source code views. Fluid source code views enable programmers working on a primary source code document to fluidly shift attention to related supporting material in a contextual manner. This reduces the need for programmers to naviga...

Developing self-managing embedded systems with ASSL

Abstract:
We present a new formal approach to the implementation of embedded systems, arrived at by introducing self-management capabilities to the same. We use the ASSL (Autonomic System Specification Language) framework to approach the problem of formal specification and automatic code generation of embedded systems. Some features of ASSL help to specify event-driven embedded systems where hardware is sensed via special metrics intended to drive events and self-management policies. The latter can be specified to handle critical situations in an autonomous reactive manner. Moreover, we present a case study where we use ASSL to specify control software for the wide-angle camera carried on board by NASA’s Voyager II spacecraft

Abstract:
Online training is an increasingly important facet of the skills enhancing portfolio of any organization and has an especial place within life-long learning, career development and other self-regulated adult learning. We here present an overview of work towards developing online training, which is augmented by contextual cues, training which is personalized and adapted, in real-time, towards the learning objectives of the user, whilst supporting a wide range of meta-cognitive activities. This work brings technologies developed for the fantastical scenarios of serious gaming into the 'real world' - we also begin to address some of the underlying challenges in this transition.
