On the structure and internal mechanisms of business incubators: A comparative case study

On the structure and internal mechanisms of business incubators: A comparative case study
(2012)
Ahmad, Ali
Abstract:
It is an established economic development paradigm that entrepreneurship promotes innovation and encourages the creation of high quality jobs. In order to enhance entrepreneurial activity, the focus in Ireland to date has been on public-sector venture creation programmes. Of such programmes, business incubators, over the years, politically and in terms of public funding, have received perhaps the highest level of attention. Thus, incubators in Ireland have become important policy instruments for promoting early stage entrepreneurship. The research project outlined in this thesis to investigate this important phenomenon began with an extensive review of the incubator-incubation literature. This review showed that given the importance attributed to incubators, surprisingly little is known about how they function, or, the internal process of incubation. In other words, what is not understood completely are the dynamics of an incubator’s internal processes, normative environment and st...

From Business Process Management to Business Process Ecosystem
(2006)
Wang, Xiaofeng
Abstract:
New technologies, notably service oriented architectures and Web services, are enabling a third wave of business process management (BPM). Supporters claim that BPM is informed by complexity theory and that business processes can evolve and adapt to changing business circumstances. It is suggested by BPM adherents that the business/IT divide will be obliterated through a process-centric approach to systems development. The evolution of BPM and its associated technologies are explored and then coevolutionary theory is used to understand the business/IT relationship. Specifically, Kauffman¿s NKC model is applied to a business process ecosystem to bring out the implications of coevolution for the theory and practice of BPM and for the relationship between business and IT. The paper argues that a wider view of the business process ecosystem is needed to take account of the social perspective as well as the huma...

E-learning and Business Models: An Exploratory Study
(2008)
Golden, William; Nagle, Tadgh
Abstract:
The debate on the usefulness of business models to the IT/IS and strategy domains is fraught with confusion and contradictory views. However, recent research has indicated a convergence of ideas and a solid role for the business model concept within industry and the research community. Based within the maturing e-Learning industry, this paper empirically investigates the applicability of the business model concept as defined by Osterwalder et al. (2005). Firstly, the paucity of research within the area of business models and e-Learning is examined along with the convergence of business model research. Using a field study of four e-Learning organisations the value of the business model concept is empirically investigated as well as exploring the business models of the organisations themselves. Using the framework set out by Osterwalder et al. (2005) this study indicates that the business model is a solid tool for communicating the business execution plan of an organisation....

Semantically Enhanced Passage Retrieval for Business Analysis Activity
(2008)

Abstract:
Business analysis activity often involves the identification and extraction of information from business reports. The unstructured content of business reports poses a challenge to current Business Intelligence technologies. In this paper, we present an application that provides passage retrieval capability, which has been developed for use in business analysis activity at Hewlett-Packard¿ (HP). Preliminary evaluation of the application indicates that the inclusion of domain knowledge such as domain semantics and business intelligence rules plays an important part in system performance. It dramatically reduces the time that analysts spend extracting relevant informative passages within a report or business intelligence. In addition, it can find further relevant information that would have been overlooked by the analyst.

Polish business associations: flattened civil society or super lobbies?
(2002)
McMenamin, Iain
Abstract:
This article tests two hypotheses about post-communist business associations. The first predicts weak business associations which are presented with insurmountable collective action problems by the flattened civil society inherited from totalitarianism. According to this hypothesis, no business associations are inherited from the previous regime, and associations are confronted with difficult-to-organize latent groups of large numbers of new small enterprises. The second hypothesis, as proposed by Mancur Olson, predicts strong business associations benefiting from the collective action advantages of the communist economic structure which was composed of small numbers of large enterprises. The hypotheses are tested with case studies of Poland's five most influential business associations. The conclusion is that the flattened civil society hypothesis is best borne out by the evidence. This suggests that, in other countries, political factors, rather than the standard communist ec...

The Research Output of Business Schools and Business Scholars in Ireland
(2010)
TOL, RICHARD S. J.
Abstract:
The research performance of business scholars on the island of Ireland is evaluated based on their number of publication, number of citations, h-index and the same divided by the numbers of years since the first publication. Data were taken from Scopus. There is a large variation in both life-time achievement and annual production. Almost half of the 748 scholars have not published in an academic journal. Men perform better than women. More senior people perform better. There are distinct differences between disciplines, with accountancy performing poorly. On average, scholars in Northern Ireland perform better than scholars in the Republic. However, Trinity College Dublin has the top rank among the eleven business schools; Queen____s University Belfast and University College Dublin share the second place; and NUI Galway and the University of Ulster share the fourth spot. Irish business schools specialize in particular research areas so that mergers would lead to schools can s...

Parties, promiscuity and politicisation: business-political networks in Poland
(2004)
McMenamin, Iain
Abstract:
Research on post-communist political economy has begun to focus on the interface between business and politics. It is widely agreed that informal networks rather than business associations dominate this interface, but there has been very little systematic research in this area. The literature tends to assume that a politicised economy entails business-political networks that are structured by parties. Theoretically, this article distinguishes politicisation from party politicisation and argues that the two are unlikely to be found together in a post-communist context. Empirically, elite survey data and qualitative interviews are used to explore networks of businesspeople and politicians in Poland. Substantial evidence is found against the popular idea that Polish politicians have business clienteles clearly separated from each other according to party loyalties. Instead, it is argued that these politicians and businesspeople are promiscuous. Since there seems to be little that is un...

E-Business in Supply Chain Management
(2010)
Wagner, Claudia-Maria; Sweeney, Edward
Abstract:

E-business is concerned with the use of the Internet to link companies with their suppliers, customers and other trading partners. As a business concept, it has evolved significantly since its introduction in the 1990’s in parallel with the rapid rate of development of information technology (IT) during this period.
Supply chain management (SCM) is fundamentally concerned with integration of activities both with
and between organisations. IT plays a crucial role in SCM as a key enabler of supply chain integration
(SCI). This chapter sets out the role of e-business concepts in the context of the supply chain challenges faced by firms. It specifically explores the role of e-procurement as an example of how e-business concepts have been applied to one key SCM activity, namely purchasing and procurement. In this context, the chapter examines the nature and evolution of e-marketplaces and goes on to identify key adoption drivers and benefits base...

Abstract:
In this article we propose an approach to business process management which meets the demands of business process evolution. This approach allows for on-the-fy modifications of business processes. In contrast to many other approaches, we do not only concentrate onactivities to be carried out in business processes, but also on the datacreated and manipulated by these activities We propose to apply datamodel analysis and improvement strategies well-known from the information system field in the context of business process management.

The Business of Managing Bars
(2011)
Murphy, James Peter
Abstract:

Licensed premises cannot operate without having a rigorous and sometimes scientific management approach which incorporates the continuous application of management methods and techniques. Major hospitality companies experiencing sever decline in profits sometimes hire management consulting firms to develop a strategy for reversing declining trends. Conversely, a company enjoying rapid growth and astonishingly high profitability sometimes actually look to management consultants for a way to remain successful and to expand their overall business. Bars are now trading in difficult times at present and analysing the root causes of these declining sales could help bar owners across Ireland to seize control of their destiny going forward. Bar owners need to adopt a total business management approach which regularly examines all elements of their business. This approach usually includes rigorous examination of areas such as: marketing, technology, human resources, an...

NeoWestern business-government relations: the case of Poland
(2005)
McMenamin, Iain
Abstract:
This article investigates the applicability of Western models of business-government relations to the postcommunist context. Given the absence of a business-government relationship over the forty years of communism, it seems perfectly plausible that postcommunist countries should produce a historically unprecedented form of business-government relations and a new type of capitalist democracy. On the other hand, these countries have for several years been unequivocally regarded as capitalist democracies so it also seems possible that a literature developed for Western capitalist democracies should be useful in the postcommunist context. This article argues that, in spite of their assertions to the contrary, postcommunist studies propose no new concepts or variables for the study of business-government relations. Moreover, a detailed case study of Poland demonstrates the applicability of Western models to a postcommunist context. The confrontation between Western models and postcommun...

Communication Apprehension Among Business and Accounting Students
(2011)
Shanahan, Daniel
Abstract:
In light of the importance of effective communication in today‟s global, dynamic business world, accounting and business education programmes place considerable emphasis on the development of communication competencies among students. However, not all students appear to benefit as desired from communication skills development. Prior research has identified communication apprehension, or fear of communicating, as a major factor which inhibits an individual‟s willingness to communicate and his/her capability to develop effective communication skills. The purpose of this study is to explore communication apprehension, oral and written, among accounting and business students at an Irish Institute of Technology. The study is carried out using both quantitative and qualitative research methods. The validity and reliability of two common apprehension instruments (Personal Report of Communication Apprehension and Written Communication Apprehension questionnaires) were confirmed for use in a...

The writing skills course as an introduction to critical practice for larger business undergraduate classes
(2011)
Cullen, John G.
Abstract:
Calls for greater levels of critical thought in business and management education increased in the wake of the global financial crisis. Many business educators articulated a need to develop students who engage with theory at the deepest level in order to cultivate more socially engaged managers and management thinkers. These calls surfaced at a time when or organisations voiced concerns about the quality of the basic literacy and numeracy skills of graduates. It is often difficult to introduce students to critical practice at the undergraduate level due to larger class sizes, with the result that deeper theoretical engagement is often postponed until postgraduate stages of business education. This paper discusses the findings from an action research project conducted on a critical writing skills project which aimed to introduce a group of 95 first-year business students to the concept of critical practice through their written assignments. The grounded theory alternative in business network research
(1996)
de Burca, Seán; McLoughlin, Damien
Abstract:
This paper presents a brief outline of the defining characteristics of grounded theory methodology. Such a focus was motivated by a desire to bring the methodology into clearer focus. Particular attention is paid to the debate grounded theory has engendered. In doing so, a number of misunderstandings, dilemmas and criticisms are highlighted. Thus, while one research strategy should not be emphasised to the exclusion of others, this paper advocates the use of grounded theory methodology as a fresh approach in addressing some of the research challenges associated with network studies.

the Impact of Business-to-Business e-marketplaces as Extended Media in the Procurement Supply Chain of Airlines
(2007)
Wagner, Claudia-Maria, (Thesis)
Abstract:

In recent years, a growing number of companies in many industry sectors have decided to include e-Business as an integral part of their strategy to enhance competitive advantage. The airline industry, having always been a great instigator and guarantor for innovative changes, is one of the industries where developments in Information and Communication Technology (ICT) in general have proven to be an inevitable factor of success. Among recent innovative developments are B2B e-Marketplaces, which have been hypothesised to optimise procurement processes and to add significant value in airlines’ supply chains. However, while e-Marketplaces have been analysed in more detail from an institutional perspective, very limited research has been undertaken to date in exploring the e-Marketplace adoption drivers and performance indicators, particularly from a diffusion-of-innovation (DOI) and innovation-organisation-environment (IOE) viewpoint. To address these issues, this research est...

Abstract:
In this paper, we introduce the Personalized Question Answering framework, which aims at addressing certain limitations of existing domain specific Question Answering systems. Current development efforts are ongoing to apply this framework to a use case within the domain of Business Analysis, highlighting the important role of domain specific semantics. Current research indicates that the inclusion of domain semantics helps to resolve the ambiguity problem and furthermore improves recall for retrieving relevant passages.

International Transmission of Business Cycles
(2010)
SIEDSCHLAG, IULIA
Abstract:
Increased international economic integration over the past two decades has stimulated a growing academic and policy interest in the analysis of the international transmission of business cycles. There has been renewed interest recently in this research topic notably in relation to the current global financial and economic crisis. In an increasingly integrated world economy, understanding the extent to which business cycles propagate across countries and regions and their underlying factors is highly important to investors and policy makers. Furthermore, in the case of monetary unions, business cycle synchronisation is taken as an indication of a low probability of asymmetric shocks and so of a low cost of losing independence over monetary and exchange rate policies. Fluctuations of economic activity at regional level are likely to be more important than at national level because regions trade relatively more than countries and specialisation at regional level is higher than at regio...

Technology ownership, usage and expectations of Business School freshmen: Evidence from an Irish university
(2009)
Alexopoulos, Angelos; Gorman, Louise; Lynn, Theo; Brewer, Laura; DiGangi, Samuel; Jammasch-Pennell, Angel
Abstract:
Based on survey data from 374 incoming, first-year undergraduates of an Irish university business school, this study examines student ownership, usage and expectations of information and communications technology (ICT) and how these are influenced by student characteristics, such as gender, nationality, socioeconomic background, place of residence, and prior levels of ICT experience. Results indicate significant differences in technology ownership and usage attributed to gender, nationality, socioeconomic background, and place of residence. Additional differences in expectations of ICT-enabled learning activities related to student pre-entry ICT experience are also found. The findings present business schools with challenges and opportunities in addressing the technology needs of a diverse body of netgeners by developing infrastructure and learning strategies that match these needs with their wider experience and expectations of ICT.

In Business Cycles (1939) Schumpeter took up empirical data which had been produced by Kondratieff, and made the ‘‘clustering’’ of innovations into the actual cause of long economic cycles. The book was a failure, largely due to negative reviews which stressed the poor quality of its statistical analysis. In fact, an even more serious fault in it is its reflection of a near-total blind spot in Schumpeter’s perspective about the part played by law in economic life. He thought that ‘‘It is entirely immaterial whether or not [changes in the institutional framework] are embodied in, or recognized by, legislation.’’ The reality is that the concept of coevolution of technology and ways of doing business, on the one hand, and legal changes which affect the conditions for investment in them, on the other, explain long cycles much more persuasively than Schumpeter’s approach. It suggests that the first Kondratieff cycle was made possible by the availability of ‘‘full’’ property rights, the s...

The education of American business men
(1912)
Oldham, C.H.
Abstract:
There is in the modern business world, on the one hand, a new consciousness that education is an economic power which must be availed of. There is a growing feeling among statesmen and educationists, on the other hand, that the real rulers of the modern world will be the business men who are capable of managing the "large industry" that the greatness of nations will depend more and more on their capacity of producing these capable masters of large enterprises. And the chasm which has so long separated the learned professions from the practical men of affairs is everywhere closing up by the drawing together of the two sides. It will, surely, be worth while to indicate briefly some of the causes which have induced so many countries to become interested in this movement.

Leadership for Business Excellence: The Gender Perspective
(2008)

Abstract:
peer-reviewed
The adoption of appropriate forms of leadership in response to modern organizational needs has become a major strand of management theory and underpins the pursuit of Total Quality/Business Excellence. With some notable exceptions, most of the leadership literature ignores the gender dimension of leadership This gender blindness and the association ofh management and leadership with men is being challenged through feminist/gender studies drawing upon ideas about power, communication, empathy and equality from the women's movement. Changing gender roles have been evolving in parallel with the quest for Total Quality/Business Excellence. This paper reviews traditional and emerging theories of leadership and management and examines them in the context of changing organizational needs demanded by the adoption of quality and excellence approaches. It explores the broader range of required leadership skills, from a gender perspective, including those previously not ...

Pattern-based business-driven analysis and design of service architectures
(2008)

Abstract:
Service architectures are an increasingly adopted architectural approach for solving the Enterprise Application Integration (EAI) problem originated by business process automation requirements. In previous work, we developed a methodological framework for the designing of service architectures for EAI. The framework is structured in a layered architecture called LABAS, and is distinguished by using architectural abstractions in different layers. This paper describes the pattern-based techniques used in LABAS for service identification, for transformation from business models to service architectures and for architecture modifications.
