Location Based Services of University Town Based on OpenStreetMap: NUI Maynooth as an example
(2009)

Abstract:
The university campus of NUI Maynooth forms a substantial part of Maynooth town. Location based services (LBS) could be important for visitors to the campus and town in assisting them to make the mast of their stay, particularly if they are not familiar with the town. In this paper we discuss an LBS application for Maynooth university campus and Maynooth town based on OpenStreetMap. The solution uses open source software and public participation rules to build its database. The work provides a prototype LBS system for NUI Maynooth which is currently under active development. The paper mainly describes some completed components of the work: data acquisition and pedestrian navigation algorithm design. Future work on path optimization and 3D applications is also discussed.

Mesopause temperatures and integrated band brightnesses calculated from airglow OH emissions recorded at Maynooth (53.2°N, 6.4°W) during 1993
(1995)
Mulligan, F.J.; Horgan, D.F.; Galligan, J.G.; Griffin, E.M.
Abstract:
Spectra of the hydroxyl emissions in the wavelength range 1.0-1.6 #m, which originate at mesopause altitudes, have been obtained, using a Fourier transform spectrometer at Maynooth (53.2°N, 6.4°W), on all suitable nights during the period January-December 1993. Rotational temperatures and integrated band brightnesses have been calculated from the spectra of the OH(3, 1) and (4, 2) vibration- rotation bands. The mean annual temperatures calculated over all measurements were T(3, 1)= 200 + 19 K and T(4, 2)= 206 + 19 K, where the uncertainty represents the standard deviation on the measurements. Harmonic analysis of the nightly averaged temperature values revealed an amplitude of 27+ 1 K and a phase of 95 __. 2 days in the annual variation of the (3, 1) band at our latitude. The semiannual component was found to have an amplitude of 7 _+ 1 K and a phase of - 5 1 ___ 9 days for this band. Results for the (4, 2) band were identical in both amplitude and phase for the annual component, ...

A search for evidence of tidal activity in OH(3,l)airglow omissions recorded at Maynooth (53.23° N, 6.35° W)
(1998)
Mulligan, F.J.; Nallen, J.J.
Abstract:
Spectra of the Meinel hydroxyl emissions in the wavelength range LO-l.6 um, which originate at altitudes close to the mesopause, have been obtained, using a Fourier transform spectrometer at Maynooth (53.23°N, 6.35*W), Ireland, on all suitable nights during the period December 1992 to July 1995. Rotational temperatures and integrated band intensities have been calculated from the spectra of the OH (3, 1) vibrational band. These data have been analysed for evidence of tidal activity. Our results show a post sunset increase in the emission brightness throughout the year; over 70% of the time this is followed by a decline to a midnight minimum, after which the emission rate recovers to a secondary maximum in the early morning. The months of September and October show a completely different pattern with the intensity and temperature data showing a pre-midnight maximum followed by a steady decline until dawn. A cross-correlation of the intensity and temperature data reveals a periodic v...

The Emperor of Russia sends a gift to Maynooth
(2009)

Abstract:
Late in August 1864, the President of Maynooth College, Dr Charles Russell, returned at the end of the vacation to find four books waiting for him, sent by Alexander II, Emperor of Russia. These splendid volumes, printed in 1862, reproduced a substantial part of one of the most important books in the world, the Codex Sinaiticus or ‘the Sinai book’, one of the two earliest manuscripts of the Bible, including the earliest complete New Testament in existence. The original 1600-year old hand-written text, written in Greek on parchment or animal skin, had lain in the Monastery of St Catherine at Mount Sinai until 1844 when, as the leading German Biblical scholar Konstantin von Tischendorf writes, he found a few leaves of it in a basket there. He later persuaded the monks to present a substantial part of the Codex to the Emperor of Russia who in turn had it published in St Petersburg in 1862, at his own expense and in facsimile – with the text as it appeared in the original.

Abstract:
There was great excitement in the College on the morning of 13 January 1847. The students had noticed preparations in the parlour and had discovered that Daniel O’Connell was expected imminently. They rushed to the gate to cheer him in and escort him, together with his son John, to the front hall in Stoyte House where the President, Dr Renehan, stood waiting on crutches (having sprained his ankle). At that time the back quadrangle had not yet been built; but work had just begun. Father and son were taken to inspect the new foundations after which the Liberator stood at the door of New House and addressed the students He spoke of evils to be faced, rejoiced in the new conversions to the Catholic Church in the universities of England (John Henry Newman was one), and encouraged them all in the defence of the Faith. He then addressed the Juniors, after which he was asked to go to the prayer hall at the request of the senior students. The whole College had assembled there. The students w...

OH-equivalent temperatures derived from ACE-FTS and SABER temperature profiles – a comparison with OH*(3-1) temperatures from Maynooth (53.2 N, 6.4 W)
(2008)
Mulligan, F.J.; Lowe, R. P.
Abstract:
OH-equivalent temperatures were derived from all of the temperature profiles retrieved in 2004 and 2005 by the ACE-FTS instrument in a 5 degree band of latitude centred on a ground-based observing station at Maynooth. A globally averaged OH volume emission rate (VER) profile obtained from WINDII data was employed as a weighting function to compute the equivalent temperatures. The annual cycle of temperature thus produced was compared with the annual cycle of temperatures recorded at the ground-based station more than a decade earlier from the OH*(3-1) Meinel band. Both data sets showed excellent agreement in the absolute value of the temperature minimum (~162 K) and in its time of occurrence in the annual cycle at summer solstice. Away from mid-summer, however, the temperatures diverged and reach a maximum disagreement of more than 20K in mid-winter. Comparison of the Maynooth ground-based data with the corresponding results from two nearby stations in the same time-period indicated...

Abstract:
This report is about research carried out with sixty-two tutors who have worked on the Certificate in Counselling Skills at the Department of Adult and Community Education, NUI Maynooth. This course is a foundation-level course, conducted at NUI Maynooth and at outreach centres throughout the Republic of Ireland, and it has attracted over 14,000 students since it began in 1984. It has developed within a context where the profession of counselling has emerged as separate from psychology, and in a social context of a growing awareness of the role of counseling. The course is also unique in the field of counseling education, in that it has adopted from the start an educational stance rather than a therapeutic one. All the course tutors are qualified and, for the most part, practising counsellors. Many who were core to the course in its early days were also heavily involved in establishing the Irish Association for Counselling and Therapy (IACT), now the Irish Association for Counsellin...

Abstract:
In 1808 the following story about a Maynooth student appeared in Watty Cox’s 'Irish Magazine and monthly asylum for neglected biography': A Hungarian, who translated some of Ovid's elegies into Greek verse, travelled through these countries in 1802. He had been in both the English universities, in Edinburgh, and at the College in Dublin [TCD]; at each of which places he conversed with the cleverest men in the Greek and Roman tongues. After spending some time in Dublin College, curiosity led him to Maynooth. It was during the summer recess, and most of the professors were from home. He met a lad about twenty years of age, with whom he entered into conversation. He asked several questions concerning the internal economy of the college; and, among the rest, if there was a professor of Greek on the establishment. The young lad, indignant at the affront offered his Alma Mater, spoke to him in that language with the greatest fluency. The Hungarian was struck with wonder, a...

Overview of optical BCI research at NUI Maynooth
(2009)
Soraghan , C.; Charles, M.; Matthews, F.; Ward, T.E.
Abstract:
A brain-computer interface (BCI) is a device that provides a user with an alternative means of interactive communication, rather than the usual modes via physical gestures/speech. Thus it acts as a neural prosthesis bypassing the normal output pathways of the brain, i.e. spinal cord and periphery cascade. An optical BCI uses optical means of determining the user's mental intent, e.g. to turn on a light switch, by spectroscopic analysis of the intact brain.

Abstract:
Distributed Interactive Applications, such as networked games, are one of the most important and popular computer applications available today. However, their successful deployment is hampered by the limitations of the underlying network connecting participants, particularly the deleterious effects of lag and jitter. The Distributed Interactive Applications Group at NUI Maynooth has undertaken substantive research on overcoming these limitations for more faithful shared interactivity in such applications. In this poster, a brief overview of the contribution of the group is given with particular emphasis given over to results in psycho-perceptual analysis, compression parameters, behavioral modeling for entity state prediction and network modeling

Amplitudes and phases of the diurnal and semidiurnal tide observed in mesospheric OH(3,1) emissions over Maynooth, Ireland
(1997)
Mulligan, Francis J.; Nallen, J.J.
Abstract:
Spectra of the mesospheric OH(3,1) emission have been recorded by an FTIR spectrometer at Maynooth (53.2 degrees N, 6.4 degrees W), of Ireland on all suitable nights during the period December 1992 to July 1995. A total of 370 nights observations have been obtained. Each spectrum is acquired in a five minute integration period, and has been analyzed to yield a value of rotational temperature and brightness associated with the (3,1) band. Each of these measurements has been normalized to the mean value for the particular night on which it was recorded in an effort to extract the amplitude and phase of the variations. The normalized data have been binned at half-hourly intervals for each month so as to minimize the contribution to the variations from gravity waves and short period planetary scale oscillations. Harmonic analysis has been performed to determine an amplitude and a phase of both the diurnal and semidiurnal oscillations for each month in the period under study. The results...

Abstract:
Ground-based measurements of upper atmospheric parameters, such as temperature and wind velocity, can be made by observing airglow emissions that have a well-defined altitude profile and that are known to be representative of the emitting region. We describe the optical observatory at Maynooth (53.23° N, 6.4° W) at which two instruments, a Fabry-Pérot interferometer and a Fourier transform spectrometer, are used to record atmospheric airglow emissions in Ireland at visible and near-infrared wavelengths, respectively. Descriptions of the instruments, data acquisition, and analysis procedures are provided, together with some sample results.

Mesopause temperatures calculated from the O2(a1 Δg) twilight airglow emission recorded at Maynooth (53.2˚N, 6.4˚W)
(1995)
Mulligan, F.J.; Galligan, J.M.
Abstract:
Spectra of the O2(a1 Δg) airglow emission band at 1.27 μm have been recorded during twilight at Maynooth (53.2˚N, 6.4˚W) using a Fourier transform spectrometer. Synthetic spectra have been generated for comparison with the recorded data by assuming a particular temperature at the emitting altitude and modelling the absorption of each line in the band as it propagates downward through the atmosphere. The temperature used in generating the synthetic spectra was varied until an optimum fit was obtained between the recorded and synthetic data; this temperature was then attributed to the altitude of the emitting layer. Temperatures derived using this technique for 91 twilight periods over an 18-month period exhibit a strong seasonal behaviour with a maximum in winter and minimum in summer. Results from this study are compared with temperatures calculated from the OH(3,1) Meinel band recorded simultaneously. Abstract:
This summary report presents key findings from a large evaluation of the effectiveness of the Incredible Years BASIC Preschool/Early School Years Parent Training (IYP) programme as an intervention for Irish children (aged approx. 3-7yrs) with emotional and behavioural difficulties. The evaluation involved three separate, but inter-related sub-studies including: (1) an experimental study (or Randomised Controlled Trial (RCT)); (2) a qualitative study involving interviews with parents who were included in the RCT in order to assess their experiences and views of the programme; and (3) a cost analysis of the IYP programme.

Abstract:
In this paper we consider the mathematics grades of first year students at the National University of Ireland Maynooth and the influence that the Mathematics Support Centre has on these grades. We will consider evidence to suggest that the Mathematics Support Centre has a positive effect on the grades of the students who attend the centre. It seems to be particularly beneficial to students with weak mathematical backgrounds. As these students are most at risk of failing or dropping out of University, the positive impact of the Mathematics Support Centre on their grades is very encouraging
