The Health Service Executive (HSE) is the largest health organisation in Ireland. Responsible for the running of the country’s public health services, the HSE employs more than 100,000 people and provides a wide range of clinical and social services in both the hospital and community settings. The HSE’s structure is designed to put its patients and clients at the centre of the organisation.
Large numbers of HSE staff are actively engaged in health research across a wide range of disciplines, including mental health, cardiology, occupational therapy, nursing and social work. The HSE supports and promotes their work, as exemplified by its Position Statement on Open Access Publishing . HSE research is captured, preserved and disseminated via the Lenus repository, an extensive collection of journal articles, postgraduate dissertations and grey literature. Lenus was established in 2009 and is administered by the Regional Library & information Service in Dr Steevens’ Hospital, Dublin.
