Topographic anisotropy in continuous magnetic films with two-dimensional surface nanomodulation
(2010)
Li, S. P.; Godsell, Jeffrey F.; Roy, Saibal
Achomaireacht:
Artificial and local control of spin-configuration in nanoscale in continuous magnetic films could enable new spin-based electronics and precision sensor technologies. Extensive theoretical research has recently been devoted to examination of surface nanovariation mediated magnetism and its utility, which has been demonstrated only in one-dimensional surface modulation. However, a realization of engineered spin configuration using two-dimensional (2D) nanomodulation is limited by local vortex formation induced by magnetostatic energy. In this work we demonstrate for the first time, an ability to control the anisotropy in continuous magnetic films by periodic surface nanomodulation in two-dimensions (2D). Magnetic properties of NiFe films with nanomodulated surfaces have been studied as a function of both film thickness and modulation amplitude. For films with a patterned square array (without breaking the film continuity), a clear fourfold symmetry of anisotropy field and coercivity...

Achomaireacht:
In this paper we investigate the effects of intravalley acoustic phonon scattering on the quantum transport and on the electrical characteristics of multigate silicon nanowire metal-oxide-semiconductor field-effect transistors. We show that acoustic phonons cause a shift and broadening of the local DOS in the nanowire, which modifies the electrical characteristics of the device. The influence of scattering on off-state and on-state currents is investigated for different values of channel length. In the ballistic transport regime, source-to-drain tunneling current is predominant, whereas in the presence of acoustic phonons, diffusion becomes the dominant current transport mechanism. A three-dimensional quantum mechanical device simulator based on the nonequilibrium Green's function formalism in uncoupled-mode space has been developed to extract device parameters in the presence of electron-phonon interactions. Electron-phonon scattering is accounted for by adopting the self-cons...

Eight-band k⋅p calculations of the composition contrast effect on the linear polarization properties of columnar quantum dots
(2010)

Achomaireacht:
We present eight-band k . p calculations of the electronic and polarization properties of columnar InzGa1-zAs quantum dots (CQD) with high aspect ratio embedded in an InxGa1-xAs/GaAs quantum well. Our model accounts for the linear strain effects, linear piezoelectricity, and spin-orbit interaction. We calculate the relative intensities of transverse-magnetic (TM) and transverse-electric (TE) linear polarized light emitted from the edge of the semiconductor wafer as a function of the two main factors affecting the heavy hole-light hole valence band mixing and hence, the polarization dependent selection rules for the optical transitions, namely, (i) the composition contrast z/x between the dot material and the surrounding well and (ii) the dot aspect ratio. The numerical results show that the former is the main driving parameter for tuning the polarization properties. This is explained by analyzing the biaxial strain in the CQD, based on which it is possible to predict the TM to TE in...

Low temperature exfoliation process in hydrogen-implanted germanium layers
(2010)
Ferain, Isabelle; Byun, Ki Yeol; Colinge, Cindy; Brightup, S.; Goorsky, M. S.
Achomaireacht:
The feasibility of transferring hydrogen-implanted germanium to silicon with a reduced thermal budget is demonstrated. Germanium samples were implanted with a splitting dose of 5 x 10(16) H(2)(+) cm(-2) at 180 keV and a two-step anneal was performed. Surface roughness and x-ray diffraction pattern measurements, combined with cross-sectional TEM analysis of hydrogen-implanted germanium samples were carried out in order to understand the exfoliation mechanism as a function of the thermal budget. It is shown that the first anneal performed at low temperature (<= 150 degrees C for 22 h) enhances the nucleation of hydrogen platelets significantly. The second anneal is performed at 300 degrees C for 5 min and is shown to complete the exfoliation process by triggering the formation of extended platelets. Two key results are highlighted: (i) in a reduced thermal budget approach, the transfer of hydrogen-implanted germanium is found to follow a mechanism similar to the transfer of hydroge...

Precessional dynamics of Ni45Fe55 thin films for ultrahigh frequency integrated magnetics
(2010)
Godsell, Jeffrey F.; Kulkarni, Santosh; O'Donnell, Terence; Roy, Saibal
Achomaireacht:
Future monolithic point of load switched mode power supplies will be expected to meet the energy requirements of miniaturized, high functionality electronic devices. Recently, Ni45Fe55 has emerged as a potentially important material choice for use as a soft magnetic core material within high frequency integrated passive magnetic components. The operating frequency range of the integrated passives which form a key part of the point of load power supply must increase to allow for inductor/transformer miniaturization to become monolithic with power integrated circuits. In this work, an analysis of the high frequency permeability spectra of an electroplated Ni45Fe55 thin film has been carried out to quantitatively analyze the material's high frequency performance. Complex permeability spectra of the film have been investigated at frequencies up to 9 GHz to identify both the film's spectroscopic splitting factor (g) and its effective dimensionless damping parameter (alpha). Silver nanowire array-polymer composite as thermal interface material
(2009)
Xu, Ju; Munari, Alessio; Dalton, Eric; Mathewson, Alan; Razeeb, Kafil M.
Achomaireacht:
Silver nanowire arrays embedded inside polycarbonate templates are investigated as a viable thermal interface material for electronic cooling applications. The composite shows an average thermal diffusivity value of 1.89x10(-5) m(2) s(-1), which resulted in an intrinsic thermal conductivity of 30.3 W m(-1) K(-1). The nanowires' protrusion from the film surface enables it to conform to the surface roughness to make a better thermal contact. This resulted in a 61% reduction in thermal impedance when compared with blank polymer. An similar to 30 nm Au film on the top of the composite was found to act as a heat spreader, reducing the thermal impedance further by 35%. A contact impedance model was employed to compare the contact impedance of aligned silver nanowire-polymer composites with that of aligned carbon nanotubes, which showed that the Young's modulus of the composite is the defining factor in the overall thermal impedance of these composites.

Pyroelectric effect enhancement in laminate composites under short circuit condition
(2009)
Chang, H. H. S.; Whatmore, Roger W.; Huang, Z.
Achomaireacht:
The pyroelectric coefficients of laminate composites under short circuit condition have been investigated by analytical modeling and numerical simulations. Indicators for various pyroelectric/non-pyroelectric material pairs that can be utilized to determine their pyroelectric coefficient enhancement credentials have been identified. Six pyroelectric materials were paired with six non-pyroelectric/elastic materials and their pyroelectric coefficient enhancement potential and figure of merit for efficiency were investigated. The best performing partnership out of the 36 pairs was lead zirconate titanate (PZT5H)-chlorinated polyvinyl chloride thermoplastic (CPVC) for thickness ratios (R) below 0.09 and PZT5H-zinc for R larger than 0.09 with both demonstrating total pyroelectric coefficient of approximately -20x10(-4) C m(-2) K(-1) at R=0.09, which corresponds to approximately 300% increase in the coefficient. PZT5H-CPVC also showed maximum of 800% rise in the pyroelectric coefficient w...

Achomaireacht:
In this work results are presented on the structural analysis, chemical composition, and interface state densities of HfO2 thin films deposited by atomic layer deposition (ALD) from Hf[N(CH3)(2)](4) and H2O on In0.53Ga0.47As/InP substrates. The structural and chemical properties are investigated using high resolution cross-sectional transmission electron microscopy and electron energy loss spectroscopy. HfO2 films (3-15 nm) deposited on In0.53Ga0.47As are studied following a range of surface treatments including in situ treatment of the In0.53Ga0.47As surface by H2S exposure at 50-350 degrees C immediately following the metal organic vapor phase epitaxy growth of the In0.53Ga0.47As layer, ex situ treatment with (NH4)(2)S, and deposition on the native oxides of In0.53Ga0.47As with no surface treatment. The structural analysis indicates that the In0.53Ga0.47As surface preparation prior to HfO2 film deposition influences the thickness of the HfO2 film and the interlayer oxide. The comp...

Echocardiography Audit on Patients with Hereditary Haemochromatosis
(2016)
Doran, Lorna
Achomaireacht:
<p>Background: The European Association for the Study of the Liver (EASL) Guidelines for Hereditary Haemochromatosis (HH) refer specifically to symptomatic Homozygous C282Y patients and provide an algorithm for treating such patients who are predisposed to iron overloading. The British Society of Echocardiography does not make provisions for HH patients per se. Cardiac failure is a known complication of severe iron overload although it is atypical. Aim: To retrospectively investigate if an echocardiogram (echo) was warranted in the HH population at Louth County Hospital (LCH) Venesection Clinic based on the current guidelines. Methods: A cohort of 833 HH patients was reviewed with respect to: Hyperferritinemia (HFE) genotype, echo results, serum ferritin levels, transferrin saturations, patient gender, age at HH diagnosis and co-morbidities. Results: From the cohort investigated, 553 of 833 patients (66 percent) had echoes performed. When reviewing all echo results for these p...

Metal particle compaction during drop-substrate impact for inkjet printing and drop-casting processes
(2016)
Clancy, Ian; Amarandei, G; Nash, Cian; Glowacki, Bartek A
Achomaireacht:
Direct coating methods using metal particles from aqueous solutions or solvent-based inks become central in the roll-to-roll fabrication processes as these methods can lead to continuous or pre-defined conductive layers on a large variety of substrates. For good electrical conductivity, the metal particles have to be brought into contact, and traditionally, additional sintering treatments are required. Such treatments can degrade the sensitive substrates as paper or polymer films. In this study, the possibility of obtaining conductive layers at room temperature is investigated for direct coating methods with an emphasis on drop-casting and inkjet printing. Thus, it is shown that electrical conductive layers can be achieved if the metal particles can compact during the drop-substrate impact interaction. It is theoretically shown that the compaction process is directly related to the particle and ink drop size, the initial fractional particle loading of the ink, solvent viscosity, and...

Achomaireacht:
An aerosol time-of-flight mass spectrometer (ATOFMS) was employed to provide real-time single particle mixing state and thereby source information for aerosols impacting the western Mediterranean basin during the ChArMEx-ADRIMED and SAF-MED campaigns in summer 2013. The ATOFMS measurements were made at a ground-based remote site on the northern tip of Corsica. Twenty-seven distinct ATOFMS particle classes were identified and subsequently grouped into eight general categories: EC-rich (elemental carbon), K-rich, Na-rich, amines, OC-rich (organic carbon), V-rich, Fe-rich and Ca-rich particles. Mass concentrations were reconstructed for the ATOFMS particle classes and found to be in good agreement with other co-located quantitative measurements (PM1, black carbon (BC), organic carbon, sulfate mass and ammonium mass). Total ATOFMS reconstructed mass (PM2.5) accounted for 70-90% of measured PM10 mass and was comprised of regionally transported fossil fuel (EC-rich) and biomass burning (K...

<p>Summary: The miRBase database is the central and official repository for miRNAs and the current release is miRBase version 21.0. Name changes in different miRBase releases cause inconsistencies in miRNA names from version to version. When working with only a small number of miRNAs the translation can be done manually. However, with large sets of miRNAs, the necessary correction of such inconsis...

Achomaireacht:
This paper introduces the concept of power supply on chip (PwrSoC) which will enable the development of next-generation, functionally integrated, power management platforms with applications in dc-dc conversion, gate drives, isolated power transmission and ultimately, high granularity, on-chip, power management for mixed-signal, SOC chips. PwrSoC will integrate power passives with the power management IC, in a 3D stacked or monolithic form factor, thereby delivering the performance of a high-efficiency dc-dc converter within the footprint of a low-efficiency linear regulator. A central element of the PwrSoC concept is the fabrication of power micro-magnetics on silicon to deliver micro-inductors and micro-transformers. The paper details the magnetics on silicon process which combines thin film magnetic core technology with electroplated copper conductors. Measured data for micro-inductors show inductance operation up to 20 MHz, footprints down to 0.5 mm(2), efficiencies up to 93% an...

This topical review will provide a survey of the current state of the art in 'hyphenated' techniques for characterisation of bulk materials, surface, and interfaces, whereby two or more analytical methods investigating different properties are applied simultaneously to the same sample to better characterise the sample than can be achieved by conducting separate analyses in series using different instruments. It is intended for final year undergraduates and recent graduates, who may have some background knowledge of standard analytical techniques, but are not familiar with 'hyphenated' techniques or hybrid instrumentation. The review will begin by defining 'complementary', 'hybrid' and 'hyphenated' techniques, as there is not a broad consensus among analytical scientists as to what each term means. The motivating factors driving...

An introduction to polymer nanocomposites
(2015)
Armstrong, Gordon
Achomaireacht:
This topical review presents an overview of the formulation, characterisation and range of applications for polymer nanocomposites. After explaining how material properties at the nanometre scale can vary compared to those observed at longer length scales, typical methods used to formulate and characterise nanocomposites at laboratory and industrial scale will be described. The range of mechanical, electrical and thermal properties obtainable from nanocomposite materials, with examples of current commercial applications, will be outlined. Formulation and characterisation of nanoparticle, nanotube and graphene composites will be discussed by reference to nanoclay-based composites, as the latter are presently of most technological relevance. Three brief case studies are presented to demonstrate how structure/property relationships may be controlled in a variety of polymer nanocomposite systems to achieve required performance in a given application. The review will conclude by discussi...

Mitigation and control of the overcuring effect in mask projection micro-stereolithography
(2017)
O'Neill, Paul; Kent, Nigel J.; Brabazon, Dermot
Achomaireacht:
Mask Projection micro-Stereolithography (MPμSL) is an additive manufacturing technique capable of producing solid parts with micron-scale resolution from a vat of photocurable liquid polymer resin. Although the physical mechanism remains the same, the process differs from traditional laser-galvanometer based stereolithography (SL) in its use of a dynamic mask UV projector, or digital light processor (DLP), which cures each location within each 3D layer at the same time. One area where MPµSL has garnered considerable attention is in the field of microfluidics and Lab-on-a-Chip, where complex multistep microfabrication techniques adopted from the semiconductor industry are still widely used, and where MPµSL offers the ability to fabricate completely encapsulated fluidic channels in a single step and at low cost [1–3]. However, a significant obstacle exists in the prevention of channel blockage due to overcuring of the polymer resin [4, 5]. Overcuring can be attributed to the so-called...

Observation and Investigation of the Ferrielectric Subphase with High qT Parameter.
(1997)

Achomaireacht:
<p>Dielectric relaxation processes in an antiferroelectric liquid crystal ~AFLC! have been investigated over a wide range of frequencies from 1 Hz to 1 GHz. The AFLC under investigation possesses a variety of different ferrielectric, ferroelectric, and antiferroelectric phases. Dielectric and polarization measurements under direct bias voltage have been made with a view to clarifying the origin of the high-temperature ferrielectric phase, which appears between the AF and smectic-C* phases. This phase is assigned to an unstable ferrielectric phase with qT parameter greater than 1/2 ~according to the Ising model! or a doubly modulated incommensurate phase ~according to the expanded Landau model!. The results are also supported by conoscopy.</p>
