Lynches Lane Reed & Willow Bed Facility Final Report South Dubin County Council
(2012)
McCarton, Liam; O'Hogain, Sean; McDonald, Don; Reid, Anna
Achomaireacht:
<p>This final report will present results from a two year study to monitor the performance of a hybrid reed willow bed facility at Lynches Lane, in the administrative area of South Dublin County Council (SDCC). Design specifications for the facility are presented. Monitoring results for a two year period including influent and effluent parameters, rainfall, potential evapotranspiration, and soil classification are also presented and discussed. During the two year monitoring period the system achieved a zero discharge. This report will discuss the potential application of similar systems within South Dublin County Council administrative area. This is in the context of a recent EU judgment which declared that Ireland has failed to fulfill its obligations regarding domestic wastewaters disposed of through individual waste water treatment systems. The development of an appropriate zero discharge wastewater facility similar to the one operating successfully at Lynches Lane, has the...

Hearing family carers: report on research undertaken with family carers in Cork
(2010)
O'Riordan, Jacqui; Ó hAdhmaill, Féilim; Duggan, Helen
Achomaireacht:
This report details the findings of research undertaken with family carers in Cork during 2007 – 2008. The research was undertaken to elicit the views and experiences of family carers, and in so doing, to gain insight into their perspectives on family caring and on associated support mechanisms. It is hoped that, thereafter, policy can draw on these observations. Three key themes emerged from the research itself. These are (i) the role and position of the family carer in society, (ii) the process of family caring itself and (iii) access to and knowledge of key support services. This report, then, draws attention to the extent and dynamics of family caring, as seen through the opinions and experiences of carers located in and nearby Cork city. It has the following format. In the first instance we turn our attention to a discussion of family caring in Ireland, and associated supports more generally. This includes a discussion on key issues arising in the general discourse around famil...

Report on Irish consumers' awareness and knowledge of legal rights
(2013)
Donnelly, Mary; White, Fidelma
Achomaireacht:
This Report presents the results of an empirical study conducted by staff at the Faculty of Law, University College Cork (the UCC study ) in relation to consumers self-perception and their actual knowledge of the law. It builds upon earlier studies concerning Irish consumers by the National Consumer Agency and on the Special Eurobarometer Report (No. 342, 2011) on consumer empowerment. The UCC study assesses actual knowledge and focuses largely on consumer rights which derive from domestic law and it investigates how well informed and knowledgeable Irish consumers are in respect of these rights.

(2012)
Brady, Conor; Barton, Kevin; Seaver, Matthew
Achomaireacht:
This report details the first phase of archaeological and geophysical survey at the Hill of Slane Co. Meath. The work represents the first systematic survey of the complex in modern times and was undertaken in 2011/12 and uses new remote sensing technologies like LiDAR, Worldview 2 multispectral satellite imagery, aerial photography and archaeological geophusics. Specific aims of the project and the fieldwork were to explore the evidence for features of a possible prehistoric date in the complex, to identify evidence of features remaining from the historically attested monastic foundation at the site, to explore evidenece of the Anglo-Norman occupation of the site and to identify features associated with the later development of the site related to the standing structures visible there today.

Excavation of an Enclosure Site at Rossnaree, (Brú na Bóinne) Co. Meath 10E0242. Preliminary Report Excavation 2010
(2010)
Brady, Conor
Achomaireacht:
This report details the first season of excavation in summer 2010 of the site of a Neolithic lithic scatter and early medieval enclosure at Rossnaree in the Brú na Bóinne World Heritage Site in Co. Meath. It was first discovered as a dense scatter of lithic (chipped stone) material on the surface of a tilled field close to the River Boyne, NGR 299200 273150, at the point where the famous ‘Bend of the Boyne’ begins . This was subsequently investigated using various geophysical techniques at which time it became apparent that there was a substantial multivallate enclosure at the site. This enclosure was reported to the Archaeological Survey of Ireland and an RMP number was subsequently issued (ME019-080---).

Achomaireacht:
The Hill of Slane Archaeological Project (HoSAP) was set up in 2010 as a way of exploring the archaeology, history and cultural heritage of this important but somewhat overlooked archaeological complex. The hilltop is the location of a number of important stone ruins, ecclesiastical in nature while is also the site of a significant motte castle as well as a possible prehistoric barrow. This preliminary report details the second phase of archaeological survey work which includes topographic survey, LiDAR analysis and geophysical survey. The main aims are firstly to gather data on the nature of the surviving monuments and secondly to identify low relief or subsurface traces related to these and other features in the complex

This report provides the main results and findings of the twelfth annual underwater television on the Aran, Galway Bay and Slyne head Nephrops grounds, ICES assessment area; Functional Unit 17. The survey was multi-disciplinary in nature collecting UWTV, fishing, CTD and other ecosystem data. In total 31 UWTV stations were successfully completed in a randomised isometric grid design at 3.5nmi or 6.5km intervals over the known range of the stock on the Aran Grounds. The mean burrow density observed in 2013, adjusted for edge effect, was 0.32 burrows/m². The final krigged burrow abundance estimate was 317 million burrows with a CV (or relative standard error) of 4 %. Abundance estimates have fluctuated considerably over the time series. The abundance decreased significantly in 2012 and the 2013 estimate was 2% lower and the lowest estimate in the 12 year time series. Rais...

This report provides the results of the second underwater television on the ‘Porcupine Bank Nephrops grounds’ ICES assessment area; Functional Unit 16. The survey was multi-disciplinary in nature collecting UWTV, CTD and other ecosystem data. In total 68 UWTV stations were successfully completed in a randomised 6 nautical mile isometric grid covering the full spatial extent of the stock. The mean burrow density observed in 2013, adjusted for edge effect, was 0.106 burrows/m². The final krigged abundance estimate was 768 million burrows with a relative standard error of 4% and an estimated stock area of 7,100km2. The abundance estimate was 2% lower than in 2012. Landings options at various different fishing mortalities were calculated in line with the recommendations of WKNEPH 2013. Fishing at Fmsy in 2014 implies a slight increase in the TAC from 1,800 t to 1,850 ...

This report provides the main results of the 2013 underwater television survey on the ‘Labadie, Jones and Cockburn Banks’ ICES assessment area; Functional Unit 20-21. Some exploratory stations were carried out in 2006 and 2012. The survey was multi-disciplinary in nature collecting UWTV, CTD, Multibeam and other ecosystem data. A randomised isometric grid design was employed with UWTV stations at 6.0 nmi intervals. Due to weather and technical downtime only 58 out of the 95 planned stations were successfully completed. The adjusted mean density for 2013 was 0.18/m2 which can be classified as “low density”. Scientific knowledge of the heterogeneous habitat and spatial distribution of the Nephrops population in this area is developing. Survey design and burrow identification are particularly difficult in this area due to factors discussed. The occurrence of sea-pens...

This report provides the main results and findings of the eleventh annual underwater television survey on the ‘Irish sea west Nephrops grounds’ ICES assessment area, Functional Unit 15. The survey was multi-disciplinary in nature collecting UWTV and other ecosystem data. The 2013 design consisted of a randomised isometric grid of 80 stations at 5 nautical mile intervals out over the full known extent the stock. The resulting krigged burrow abundance estimate was 4.3 billion burrows. This was a 16% decrease relative to 2012. The spatial distribution shows higher abundance in the south of the area and a larger decline in abundance is apparent in the North. Overall densities remain high and abundance remains relatively stable, well above MSY Btrigger. Reducing the number of stations in 2013 is not expected to have significantly affected the accuracy of the survey est...

In total 35 UWTV stations were successfully completed on the following Nephrops grounds: Bantry Bay, Galley, Cork Channels and Helvick. Raised abundance estimates for these grounds are provided for the first time based on improved knowledge of the boundaries of those areas.

End of Project Report
An estimated 10 to 30% of the population in industrialised countries suffers food-borne illness annually, resulting in an unacceptable social (human suffering) and economic (health care and lost working days) cost. Risk analysis, a proactive preventative approach to food safety, was the focus of the European Union Risk Analysis Information Network (EU-RAIN) concerted action project. Funded by the European Commission, this project commenced in March 2003 and concluded in February 2006.

This report demonstrates that the projected changes in the climate conditions of the Burrishoole catchment, if realised, will have wide ranging implications for all aspects of the catchment system, including water temperature and quality, stream flow hydrology, soil processes, and most notably the well-being of its aquatic environment. While the projected changes in climate and their implications, outlined in this report, are specific to the Burrishoole, they are illustrative of likely changes in similar characteristic catchments along the west coast of Ireland.

Achomaireacht:
The report by Comhairle na nOspideal published in 1991 provides the basis for acute in-patient care in the region. In the intervening period, a number of local service development plans have been published within the broad policy framework of the Comhairle report. Major strategic plans at national level, which impact on local service developments including the Cancer and Cardiovascular Strategies. A review of Acute Services in the region is currently underway and a strategy for the future provision of services will be published in 2001. Revised organisation structures have been implemented with the establishment of Hospital Executive Committees in each of the hospitals. Proposals regarding the establishment of discreet Units of Management are ongoing which will enable the devolution of resources and responsibility closer to the point of service delivery and will contribute to improved communications and decision making. Strategic alliances with the University of Limerick and Univers...

North Eastern Health Board annual report 1998
(1998)
Achomaireacht:
This, our third Annual Report, outlines the Board's activities for 1998, a year during which our services continued to grow and evolve. The report gives a brief overview of our activities, progress and developments during 1998. The Board also produces an annual service plan which details how services are to be provided in the year concerned. I wish to record my sincere thanks to the Chairman and members of the Board for their vision, foresight, support and valuable policy input to the services for the region. There were a number of key service developments in 1998 which are detailed later in this document. Included among these are, the openings of the new healthcare unit in Dunshaughlin, and the new unit for the elderly at St Mary's, Drogheda. lt is also worth noting that this was a year which saw the further integration of Our Lady of Lourdes Hospital with the other services of the region. I am most grateful to all concerned. As Chief Executive Officer, I lead a team of c...

Mater Misericordiae Hospital annual report
Achomaireacht:
It is my pleasure on behalf of the Board of Management to present the Annual Report for the year ended 1994. Of necessity, the Report is wide-ranging. It encapsulates the Board of Management's aims day-to-day reality means that the demands on our Casualty Department often reaches intolerable proportions. Similarly, in an ideal world, admission to a hospital bed would be as quick and efficient as it needed to be. Inner city reality means that for people seeking admission, sometimes the only way to such a bed is through an already overstretched Casualty Department. We will continue to honour our commitments as an inner-city hospital. providing the best possible service on a twenty-four hour basis, while we will continue to "apply the bandages", we know that the "war" continues, and that a great deal else needs to be done at other levels, e.g. finding solutions for the problems of unemployment. family violence, drug abuse, etc. Meantime, we must also endeavour...
